about Kyle and HUMANCENTiPAD
I only feel comfortable talking on this specific issue because it's not solely regarding head-canons or ships and I prefer to avoid infighting over more inflammatory topics to the best of my ability. Also, Tumblr allows for more nuanced discussion so I'm putting it here
This is not an aimed post, it's just my two cents
I want to start by saying I don't think someone is horrible for preferring to draw the most “canon-compliant” version of characters. I follow this in my own way. I'm commenting on why this is a concern to me as one Jewish fan. I don’t speak for anyone but myself.
While there are exceptions, it is discomforting to see Kyle with these mouth scars for many reasons. I think S15E1 is pretty torture-porn-y as far as South Park goes (I don’t have a better term for this, sorry). No, I honestly don’t feel grossed out or disturbed by most episodes. Yes, it’s a comedy, and rightfully, if you don’t have the stomach for South Park, don’t watch it; to some extent, this also applies to the fan works which explore canonical dark tones. We also know Matt and Trey can take it too far and have in the past. S15E1 just is one of those personal thresholds for me, although this post isn't really about the morality of the episode.
Anyway, there’s a big argument about Kyle’s scars representing his overcoming of trauma, etc. but I disagree with this defense on why they should be there. If we genuinely wanted to talk about Kyle overcoming trauma, we would talk about the primary source of his trauma: how Kyle, even in more recent plots, is constantly harassed for being Jewish. We would also allow for more open conversation about antisemitism in the fandom, especially in the form of fan art. Kyle’s religion is irrelevant to how he wound up in the situation of S15E1. Therefore, the “overcoming trauma” point feels dishonest and inaccurate to me, especially considering the episode is just one long joke (vs South Park storylines which are more serious). It’d be fairer just to claim drawing it for fun.
For comparison: Butters has an eye scar; this is widely accepted within fanon. I have depicted it too. However, the optics of giving a blond-haired Roman Catholic white boy a minimal scar over his eye is way different than giving prominent scars over essentially half of a Jewish character’s face. Plus, it’s fair to say that an eye scar is usually regarded as a “beneficial” character design element regardless of origin.
Butters’ scar, while it would be a traumatizing injury, was accidental. Indeed, the conceit of “Good Times With Weapons” is the shitty way Butters is treated by the people around him. Kyle’s scars, on the other hand, would be from purposeful torture, and it’s lately been depicted not just as two sutures on the sides of his mouth but as large amounts of scar tissue shaped like an eerie smile. If it's to be scientifically realistic, then fine, but by that logic Butters should be blind in one eye or even more likely missing it, and other characters would be visibly scarred in different ways as well.
In addition, Butters’ appearance is widely and commonly depicted as “cute” - for lack of a better word - so adding a comparatively small and pinkish scar to a generally positively-regarded character (at least in terms of conventional appearances) is not the same as adding highly exaggerated scars to a Jewish character that fans generally don’t seem to think of as “soft” or even approachable the same way they see Butters. I draw Kyle with his kidney surgery scar, so I hope I am making it clear that scars are fine on characters. Of course, facial scars are very different. Still, when you stretch the scar tissue into an uncanny smile over half the face of a minority character from a one-time torture porn gag, it’s fair for people to be upset.
From my point of view, it’s off-putting because it’s about how a Jewish person (myself) sees fandom treat a Jewish character in particular; one who is frequently on the end of vitriol from within canon (Cartman’s abuse, most often) AND fans (that is: a whole subset of fans who think Kyle is cruel, heartless, and manipulative, and stress it) and it is arguably a symptom of something more insidious and deeply alarming than folks might want to admit.
I’ll be the first to say that Kyle’s canon features deserve faithful depiction, even within stylization. Moreover, facial scars don’t carry inherent personality traits in real life. But fictional character design does not exist in a vacuum, and some people are virtually insisting that Kyle be as aggressively caricatured as possible. Please remember that for centuries Jews have been (subjectively but societally) associated with ugliness, weakness, dirt, and disease. Be mindful when portraying Kyle as extremely blemished and essentially inferior or ostracized. It’s not because facial scars are these negative traits: it’s about what they mean in context to certain characters. We all internally moralize what we dislike. As such though, it’s troubling to observe that this fandom scrambles to talk about why “feminizing” Kyle is hurtful to Jewish people, yet there’s no such section defending it as there is one defending Kyle's stigmatization.

I'm. Not going to go into a huge ramble right now because I've done it before and I'll probably do it again later but I am running off of zero sleep and a sonic the hedgehog g fuel so if I talk a lot now it WILL end up incomprehensible but. Just a tiny post since I am thinking about it.
[Edit: it became a huge incomprehensible ramble anyways. It's under the cut if you want to see opinions on the TAZ graphic novel (and sorta the fanon) versions of Taako. But please dear Istus do not think I'm talking about the entire fandom it is just one specific brand of fanon-interpretation I'm talking about, NOT the fandom as a whole please I know enough about Tumblr's reading comprehension to know I should probably put a warning here now that I am talking about a specific trend and not an entire group of people who all have different opinions and also that this is ALSO just my own opinion myself. Oh and also this isn't meant to be like an attack on anyone it's just a personal peeve so if I sound frustrated that's just a Me Thing not me being like mad at anyone in particular Thank you very much genuinely for reading this and understanding]
But like,,,, does it bother anyone else or is it just me that the fandom's perception of Taako has become like. WAY more of a stuck-up ass than he ever really was in the podcast ever since the graphic novels came out? Like don't get me wrong he is a dick but he's never been, like, cruel for the most part.
But like, putting on HtbG (podcast) and then putting him next to the gn version of him is like.... Almost not the same character to me? It's like most people forget podcast Taako started out as the "dumb but sweet joke character" who was constantly slow to pick up on social cues and who the other characters repeatedly would take pity on and make fun of for being "the idiot of the group". And again he is a dick but he's not, like, Seriously a Mean Person!!
Also a decent chunk of the "antagonistic" stuff later on is still a continuation of him not getting social cues like in the beginning (for example, his bit where he threatens Angus for potentially becoming a better wizard than he is, realizing afterwards that his tone didn't come across the way he intended and that Angus interpreted that as being serious, and backtracked to try to clear up that he didn't mean to come off as serious and only meant it as a joke. And also says very explicitly in the same episode that he intends for most of his "mean" behavior throughout the series to come off as joking between equals and he doesn't mean for other people to take it seriously. He just says that.).
And he has, like, unspoken morality about what "harmful" things he does too, especially when it comes to like stealing stuff. If you listen to the podcast he (with very VERY VERY few exceptions) only ever steals from people who are dead- who will no longer be using those items and would be letting them go to waste unmoved- and people who have directly wronged him or his loved ones from his point of view. He actively tries to stop the other two from stealing from innocent people!! There's a whole scene where he establishes he isn't comfortable taking from people who don't deserve it and who need that money!! And then you go into the exact same scene in the graphic novel and.... He's exclaiming that he's going to steal a bunch of shit. Not just any shit, the exact shit he was trying to STOP the others from stealing in the podcast.
Which just doesn't feel like Taako at all!! In fact when he stole and sold Angus' grandfather's silverware and realized Angus really didn't deserve that, he felt guilty about it and tried giving some of it back for him and making up for the rest with quality time and magic lessons! but now when I look at fandom stuff (at least what I've come across) it seems a lot more people lean towards the more kleptomania-fueled dickhead Taako than the much tamer original version, and I have to say I prefer the original more!! He has so much more dimension to me in the podcast- not even because there's more time to flesh him out there than in the gn- but because while he is rude and foul-mouthed at times he has pretty explicit limits and will get upset if people try to force him to cross it! (Also seen with his elevator-related PTSD and him having a very reasonable breakdown when his emotional limits were repeatedly crossed with fair warning from him he'd freak out if forced into going in there..... which got cut from the graphic novels as well because of course it did).
And going forward, with gn Taako being so much more selfish and inhospitable than the original version, I feel like they might cut out his "I'm not a piece of meat" scene in TSG, because if they DO keep it in there's no way to me personally that it'll feel earned in any regard- tell me when in the graphic novels has he pretty much ever shown the genuine humility that the original version carries under his standoffish persona. I don't see it, and I don't think whatever happens between Crystal Kingdom's gn and The Suffering Game's gn will be enough to make that scene feel genuine to me. I really, honestly believe that.
Of course there's some things I do like about the graphic novels and I'm more than willing to give the next ones a fair shot (Crystal Kingdom was a lot better than I expected it to be!) but I really, really, REALLY don't like how the graphic novels (and to a small extent, the fandom) really over-emphasize how mean he is to people when if you listen back to the original in a lot of cases he's much more mellow and kind or is just not picking up on other people's tones/social cues and is being misinterpreted (both by other characters in-fiction and/or certain listeners) because it's established in the text he's bad at picking up that sort of thing

gar our friend gar :) (the beast boy not. the cat. or do the cat im not yr dad)
Tumblr media
GOD okay this got insanely long because im unwell sorry. me when im mentally ill about the cat obviously
okay good GOD i would violently circle wasted potential 50 fucking times if i could. society if dc let gar age past 18-20. society if titans la actually happened and gar had his own team of titans to lead. society if gar was actually able to grow out of the titans and be a hero outside of it as well. SOCIETY IF HE WAS STILL FRIENDS WITH VIC. i miss them </3 and thats not even touching on his powers. i personally like that gar's powers dont have clear limitations (like how he can turn into alien animals that he shouldnt even be able to tap into or how he can turn into creatures that don't even exist if his emotions get the better of him) but it always seemed to me more of writers not knowing what to do with him rather than actually playing with the idea…i think to some extent, untapped potential that could be seen as wasted potential is kind of the point with gar since he's initially introduced as afraid to take responsibility, but well. it has been literal decades at this point, and i think most of its ended up being mistranslated from the original intention with gar to Actually being wasted potential with him. come on man
alsooo oh my god gar is like the EPITOME of everyone but me is wrong about them to me. its genuinely so jarring to me what fanon gar is like HDKJFKHJKG like he's not a silly sunshine boy or whatever (which if i am being honest comes most of the time from bbr//ae shippers who warp both of them entirely to fit their personal ship dynamic preference but i digress). the canon bb that i know is honestly pretty snarky with his humor and CAN 100% be a jerk when he's feeling like it. and he knows when he's being one. he also knows when he's being annoying he does it on purpose. ALSO probably the biggest thing i dislike about fanon gar is when people act like his only trauma was with tara when the guy literally has the most insanely traumatic backstory ever. like obviously there's the inferiority complex but what about his MASSIVE survivor's guilt (like, part of the tara angst is a subset of his survivor's guilt but no one ever seems to acknowledge that either) and his status as a metahuman. he's literally green. what about his history as an actor and how that bleeds into how he can act like a different person depending on the people he's around. and i know a lot of people get annoyed about his daddy issues with steve but i am personally intrigued. he's such a deeply fucked up guy that i will never understand how people think he only has One Deep Thing to explore about him. i think a lot of people blame the teen titans cartoon for what fanon gar is now and while obviously that version of gar isnt as Deep without full context i feel like its still pretty easy to pick up the pieces. if anything its the fans who create fanon based on a kids cartoon they havent seen in Years from what they very vaguely remember and shoving it into their own desired tropes who are to blame LOL especially when dc just ends up encouraging it too
however i DO think he works best on a team, he's very much a team sort of guy and thrives off of interacting with others. something i find so interesting about gar is that technically he's capable of doing solo work but very much prefers a team setting. and besides a big part of how his character works is by having people to bounce his little quips off of. and his serious moments aren't nearly as rewarding if theres no one there to witness them i think. and not to bring up vic again but he worked so well with vic 😔 from what i know gar literally does not have any sort of fun dynamic these days which sucks when he is very much a dynamic guy. anyways as you can tell i like him maybe i guess. just a little bit. this got embarrassingly long (probably because i do want to talk about titans stuff in general on here and then i just get shy </3). he's my bestie who kind of sucks and i love him. thank you and good fucking night!!!!!!

@acalculatedfuture has sent: What would you say is the most unique trait about your character? (Morty Barry Rowan and Juan)
canon questionare. [Accepting]
12. What would you say is the most unique trait about your character?
// Thinking real hard about this question, because of the sheer amount of expansion I've done on these characters... So I'll be mainly focusing, in difference between my interpretation and the popular fanon views on these characters.
Tumblr media
// I've talked not too long ago about, why I prefer the manga's take on his powers, instead of the loosen mainline games.
Another thing I actually seem to enjoy, that not many people seem to be that fond of, are his gen 2's designs. Both the anime's and his spritework. I feel like it is cool to acknowledge it as a relic of what early pokemon things were like. Just because a character doesn't have a somber/dark pallette of colors or design, it doesn't mean it can't be a specialist in ghost-type.
Furthermore, I like to view it as a subtle way to tell us things, about Morty's character. And in that aspect, it is a very rich one. I'm not saying that gen 4's Morty looks are bad, not all! Especially now that we know, his new look was definetely inspired by his early beta design, found in the Spaceworld 98 Gold version leaked beta. But there is a lot to be said, about a gym leader who looks like he belongs in a modern city, and not in the one city that's all about Johto's traditional roots.
ANyway, I'm saying all of those things, because I 100% incorporate them to his story.
Tumblr media
// I'd like to put up first a disclaimer, bc I've had to deal with some flack for saying this in the past. But back then, I didn't know to put it into words in a better way. So, while I'm changing my approach to this subject going forward, my views are still the same ones.
I have nothing against people who project things onto fictional characters, or even live through them for that matter. I don't do any of that, my muses never reflect me in any shape or form. I try my best to stray away from people who do those things mentioned above, because it makes me uncomfortable due to really bad experiences, with people who couldn't separate themselves from their muses. You do you, I'm not here to judge anyone. And even less tell ppl, what they can or can't do.
With that said, I'm well aware that the fandom seems to have an expectation for anyone who RPs Barry, to immediately label him with some kind of mental disorder. Either because they are projecting it onto the character, or they really think it is the only "valid" explanation for his mannerism in the games.
And I don't feel comfortable doing that. I don't like just smacking these characters with a serious condition, I'm not on board with the 'uwu so quirky' treatment towards the subject of mental health.
Unless I'm certain that's something I want to write about, I'll do that. Otherwise, I'd rather not screw up by accidentally making light of these touchy subjects. It's not erasure, even less ableism. I want them to be handled properly, with the respect it deserves.
My young Barry is merely going through a phase, he lacks maturity, he lacks patience. He will eventually grow out of it, it is a matter of time for him.
Tumblr media
// For a community that claims to love diversity, breaking the mold, and progressiveness. A lot of people seem to forget the fact that our first line-up of serious contest coordinators were Wallace, AND Juan. Two men who were definetely breaking out of stereotypes, and were both used to represent a game's feature, that down the line fell back on the stereotype of "contests are for feminine girls only".
No hate obviously but. coughs Lisia coughs. I really like her, but it is a shame that they preferred to do this, instead of re-purposing a character that fit in with it perfectly.
I'm practically nitpicking with Juan, bc my man is so obscure. I think that even Masters legitimately forgot about him.
Tumblr media
// Back at the subject of people taking their in-game experience, in a literal worldbuilding way.
No, Rowan isn't a bad "researcher" for sending trainers to fill out the pokedex for him. The pokedex project is literally meant to be a combined effort, between trainers and researchers. No, Rowan also isn't a bad professor for not knowing every single pokemon out there, and even less when it comes to Legendaries.
Filling out the pokedex is just a game quest, you (general) dingus.

Okay I probably should've articulated myself better but tbh I was not expecting my original post to get as much attention as it did.
Anyways: yes the epilogues and hs^2 are dubiously canon and ignored by a vast majority of the fandom, including myself. This is why I don't think that every single depiction ever of Roxy should be transmasc, because that version of Roxy is only 'canon' to the meat timeline and even then, the 'canon-ness' of the epilogues and hs^s vs the original homestuck is negligible at best.
However: as for June, the only degree of 'canon-ness' is the Toblerone arg, regardless of whether June was stated to be canon vs just-epilogues-and-hs^2-canon we all know that that's a fast and lose term in regards to homestuck and the fandom are actively encouraged to not take the comments of Hussie or anyone else who's worked on official homestuck content as word of god. To clarify, I am NOT saying I dislike the June headcanon/au/interpretation, it has a solid basis and even if it didn't it'd still be a fun and interesting take on Egbert's character. I also don't think that depicting Egbert as John is bad, provided the people who do so aren't being transmisogynistic about it. Again, if we're going by 'canon-ness' here as reasons for portraying characters as trans vs just personal enjoyment and headcanons, then June's transfemme-ness is just as equally debatable/non-canon as Roxy's transmasc-ness.
Also: I am aware that there is a complicated history in regards to Roxy and transness in the fandom. Many, many people headcanon(ed) Roxy as transfeminine, including myself, and it was upsetting for many people, especially transfemme people who really saw themselves in Roxy, to have that headcanon/fanon utterly disregarded. Additionally, as a transmasc person, I feel the execution of Roxy's 'gender arc' was stereotypical, distasteful, and poorly executed at best, especially the inclusion of Dirk, who much of the fandom headcanoned as transmasc and who a lot of transmasc homestucks, myself included, really saw themselves in, as horribly transphobic to Roxy (and Calliope) for no good reason.
So ultimately: I don't have an issue if people want to portray Roxy as transfemme or even just as a cis girl, either because they don't feel that the epilogues and hs^2 are canon (I certainly don't feel that they are), or purely because of personal preference. Where I do have an issue is that some people, especially on twitter from what I've noticed, will argue that June is indisputably 100% canon across all of homestuck because of the Toblerone ARG and comments from Hussie + other homestuck writers and that any depiction of Egbert as anything but transfemme is inherently transmisogynistic (which it can be, don't get me wrong! But it isn't always) but then turn around and depict Roxy as transfemme or cis female in their fancontent as well and make the argument of 'the epilogues and hs^2 aren't canon' when you point out this double standard.
Again: I don't think there is inherently an issue with people having both June and female Roxy coexist in their fancontent, my issue is that people will act like June is an indisputable truth of Egbert's character, but then act as if Roxy's transmasc-ness can be ignored when when it is arguably, if not more canon than June, if we're deciding to acknowledge the epilogues, hs^2, and other non-original comic official content.
And the worst thing is I'm still going to get labelled a transmisogynist for pointing all this out even though I'm just as upset as anyone else over both the completely insensitive decision to make Roxy transmasc (which hurt both transfemme and transmasc fans) and the complete lack of progress on including June as June in hs^2 or any other official content. I honestly just wish homestuck had left every character's gender as open to interpretation, which I know isn't great representation wise, but at least would've avoided all this discourse and hurt and anger.

thoughts abt the way fandom approaches eskel? im curious owo (hadn't played any of the games yet, and just went through half of the first book lol)
Okay, so I'm going to preface this by stating that this is... pretty deeply connected to a really rough patch in my life, so if I get overly negative here, it's probably because of that and I apologize. (Also because of this, I don't want to turn this into a discussion about Eskel; it'd just end up leading back into some bad places.)
Warning for fanon!Eskel criticism under the cut.
So basically all of this is my personal opinion -- I'm trying to keep direct criticism out of this as much as possible.
I guess it all boils down to the fact that I personally prefer characters with a bit more bite to them -- more anger, more sarcasm, more rough inter-character interactions, more trauma, etc. Eskel (or at least, my experience of fanon!Eskel) has absolutely none of that. He's generally portrayed as Nice and Soft and Kind, the Best Witcher and the Kindest, and generally Better than Geralt in Every Way, and it feels just... reductive? Like there's no depth to his character at all -- he's just there to be kind and polite and interchangeable. His entire personality is The Nice One, except that doesn't feel like a personality at all. Generally the only character conflict you get is "I feel like a monster because of the facial scarring" and that feels overdone, to the point where I don't even care anymore. Like... generically nice, sweet guy with self-esteem issues who feels like a monster because of cosmetic issues but who gets lovingly affirmed all the time and told he's perfect is just... not the kind of story I want to read. I prefer broken characters who rub each other the wrong way who try to find a way to fit together anyways, not... schmoopy fluff. (no shame if that's your favorite kind of fic, it's just not for me.)
And then there's Lil' Bleater. There was a point in this fandom where every single Eskel in every single fic I could find was just All About Goats All The Time. If he was there, so was Lil' Bleater. He was the Nice Goat Man and that was it. I could barely find fics where he seemed to have any other character trait beyond Likes Goats! It got... tiring, to say the least. Like... I'm ambivalent on the whole "big tough guy is actually super sweet and likes small animals" trope as a whole, but it was just so overdone that I ended up hating the goat. (I'm back to ambivalent, in case you were wondering lmao.)
There's also the way the fandom got... really pissed that he was a side character? Which I get, you want more of your faves, but he was a side character in the books, he's a side character in the games, he plays no major role in the plot of the books (in fact, the hansa is the most important found family in the series, instead of the witchers -- they show up for like the first half of Blood of Elves and never again) -- why are people getting so angry that he doesn't appear more?
Also, a side note, but Geralt is the character I identify the most with and feel the most strongly about, and having Eskel be more or less held up as the better version of him hurts. It's irrational, but it does.
Once again, I'm not really interested in discussing this, or in being sent recs for fandom content about Eskel -- I'm attempting to curate my own experience and the best way to do that for me is largely to just avoid him entirely. I don't want to yuck anyone's yum, which is why I try to keep this stuff off my blog, but like... there they are, those are my opinions.
TL;DR, I deeply dislike the way that Eskel ended up being portrayed in fandom and fanon as the perfect nice witcher who can do no wrong but still hates himself because of the facial scars and who is a huge burly man who is Softe and likes animals and especially goats and who is the Best Witcher -- it goes squarely against what I enjoy in character creation in stories, and is also so overused that I've moved past ambivalence to hate.

Just admit you are pissed that everyone - including the whole cast and your obsessed fav Posey - loves and prefers Stiles and Derek to your shitty fav Scott and fucking go lol
Does anyone else just stop and think about this person? This absolute clown, so desperate for any kind of validation that they go on anon and harass people with the same six "arguments" worded differently each time (which we're always able to disprove with actual canon)? For example, I got this ask, and then not ten minutes later, the "anon" must have thought to themselves "Hey, I can make that sound even more sad and clingy" and then gifted me with this.
Tumblr media
That's practically word-for-word the same message, but with any added sentence on the end for some extra "oomph", I guess?
For the record, I don't care who anyone says is their favorite character. I freely admit that Scott McCall is an exception for me, because usually I can't stand the main characters of the shows I watch, which does make them hard to watch sometimes. That's why I enjoyed Teen Wolf so much, because here was a main character that didn't get on my nerves, and actually had realistic reactions to the horrible things happening to him. Here was a teenage boy who just wanted to play lacrosse and date the girl who liked him back, and instead he got dragged into a supernatural vendetta between werewolves and hunters. He was attacked by a man anywhere from six to ten years older than him (still an adult to his teenager) who broke into his house, threatened and manipulated him, and said what any sane person would: "Hell no!"
But true to what a great character Scott was, when said man, who had been nothing but antagonistic and even outright hostile to him, was dying because he got sloppy, Scott went out of his way - putting himself in danger! - to save him. Despite everything Derek had done to Scott, he still went out of his way to save him, despite the "smart one" asking him to let Derek die.
That's why I love Scott McCall. Despite everything thrown at him, he tried again and again to be the best version of himself. He didn't immediately resort to violence and murder, as so many others would have done in this same genre. Hell, in this same show!
So, yes, I love Scott Mccall. And ironically enough, no many how many times this anon floods my inbox, or how many people trying to replace Scott with Stiles hijack my posts, nothing any of them say is going to change that. The irony comes in when you consider they should understand how I feel. I (and others) point out the things that Derek or Stiles or Peter or whomever have done (things they claim to hate when they say Scott did them) and they say "well that's my favorite character!"
Good! Good for you! Enjoy your favorite character to your heart's content! That doesn't mean you have to try and smear the titular character for you to like them. Or, who knows, maybe it does. Maybe they can't like their "favorites" if someone else likes a different character. It's an interesting question, and if I were a psychologist I'm sure I'd have a field day with this. I enjoyed almost all of these characters. Yes, even Stiles and Derek, but not as much as I enjoyed Scott.
I don't care how many people prefer Stiles over Scott, the latter is still my favorite character. A lot of people I know are big fans of The Nazarene, doesn't mean I have to be as well. Actually, that's a bad analogy, because rather like Stiles, the canon version is better than the fanon.
Bottom line is that I love Scott McCall. I don't care if Tyler Posey himself called me to say that Stiles was his favorite character. That wouldn't change that Scott is mine. I don't know how to make that any easier to understand.
Anyway, have this gif of a smiling Scott.

Hey I've read a lot of your posts, where Magnus is a trans boy and I like that a lot, but I was wondering if you don't like the canon cis male Magnus? I'd ask you non-anonymously too, but I'm honestly scared of some people's hate messages for a question like this... sorry
long answer long answer lmao
hmgmgmnggg ok so i, hm. ok, i don’t think this was meant in a rude way at all, and i promise im in Education(TM) mode not Kill The Malicious Evil Transphobe(TM) mode like im not, accusing you of anything here, at all
but i do have a few Issues with like, the way this was asked i guess
i will answer your question just--give me a sec, im a little uncomfortable here
also like, ok, i get why you’re sending it anonymously, it’s cool--personally i’ve never seen anyone get hate on behalf of trans magnus headcanons (rather than against them) but i mean, hate can come in all shapes and sizes i guess? and anxiety, so. whatever, it’s fine, i get it
but anyway moving on: first, “canon” cis magnus. my dude... my guy... did at any point magnus say I Am Cisgender or pull out his dick.... like... neither trans or cis magnus is really “canon” just as like, you know, izzy isn’t confirmed straight or bi or pan. we know she likes dudes and personally i think the way she looks at clary indicates she sure do like girls, too, but that doesn’t seem to have been intended so it’s debatable, and that’s basically it.
also, in the context of just like... historical shit, realistically magnus isn’t cis. is he trans in the way i write about (like afab, “pre op”)? no, not necessarily in canon (although he isn’t... not that either i guess--we do see his flat chest, no scars, but HYPOTHETICALLY that could be a glamour, or the scars are magically healed. we know he has an adams apple, but there ways to do that without magic, let alone with magic. so like. i’m just saying.)
but like, he wouldn’t be cis how we understand it either by the simple virtue of being much older than the western gender binary as we know it. even if he was born with a penis and all of that and identified as a Man(TM) And Nothing Else that wouldn’t mean his idea of masculinity/manhood would be the same as ours, or that it wouldn’t at least be shaped by very different factors. so like. even if my version of trans magnus isn’t confirmed canon, cis magnus certainly isn’t either i think. that might be slicing hairs or getting finnicky with language, but it’s how i feel about it.
and just assuming that he’s canonically cis rubs me the wrong way, like, characters aren’t cishet by default, you know? obviously the writers probably weren’t intending to make him trans, and cc certainly wasn’t when she stole his character from dark hunters and made it “her own”, or else there’d be a bunch of transphobic tropes in there, but like, you know, death of the authors, we make sense of canon now. intentions arguably don’t matter, we do with the story what we will, especially when working within it.
again i don’t think you were necessarily being like “well magnus is canonically cis so :/” but it rubs me the wrong way and is something i’ve seen before so like, yeah
secondly, “trans boy” magnus versus “cis male” magnus. why boy, anon. why boy
(god why does “why boy” sound like a bizarre t-shirt slogan or a mbmbam segment--NO, BRAIN. WE ARE ON SERIOUS BUSINESS.)
but seriously tho like the sort of infantilization of trans men is really a thing (seeing them as “soft bois” and “uwu cute boys” and feminine/soft/small/delicate) and like, specifically calling magnus a trans boy versus when he’s cis he’s a “male” (which technically can refer to any age but has those like, Connotations) sits wrong with me. like, magnus isn’t a boy, you know? i mean i get making jokes like “aw my boys <3″ or whatever, but with this it’s not that say memey context AND specifically it concerns a trans man (not to mention him being asian) so like, it feels, yikes? like just. he isn’t a “trans boy”
im sorry i realize it seems like im just like harshly picking apart your answer and i really dont mean to sound like a bitch here but like, again. Education(TM) mode not Anon Hate(TM) mode. just for learning, it’s cool, i’m not angry at you, it’s chill.
to answer your question with the yikes language gently nudged to the trash chute: do i dislike cis magnus?
simple answer: yes.
complicated answer: not really. i already stated why i don’t like Cis(TM) magnus as it feels unrealistic and dumb and also he just doesn’t have cis energy lmao, but if you just mean like... well this isn’t really “cis” but kind of what people mean in this context, AMAB magnus (meaning he was “assigned male at birth” aka has a penis and all that) and he’s canonically gnc so like, he’s “cis” even if his understanding of masculinity might be different than ours and obviously we’ve seen him be gnc and all that.... i don’t really hate that, and objectively, i have no issues with it, but personal taste wise, i basically only read/write trans magnus as you see on my blog now. because i’ve kind of absorbed it as “canon” in my head (fanon, i guess, lmao)
plus, just generally trans magnus is really important to me because like, a) he is #goals i too want to be a muscular gnc hottie, b) he’s relatable and i project all my shit onto him lmao, c) it just feels very validating, in a lot of ways--with the sexual preferences i write about, his insecurities, just the way he looks, and him being trans is just kind of reassuring, you know? also d) i honestly think it fits him/his character/his backstory and he just has the vibes u kno
so basically, Cis(TM) magnus? no-go. cis magnus as in AMAB/identifies as a man full stop even if it’s wibbly wobbly compared to current times and lbr no one is going to really explore that much beyond him being outwardly gnc sometimes? fine, whatever. trans afab magnus still being gnc as hell? yessssssss
ldkgjfgh anyway im glad you like my posts!!! and hopefully ive Inducted Another Into The Trans Magnus Cult (thats a joke, but seriously, im just like,,,,,maam do u have time for ur lord and savior trans magnus?? maam blease)
