( nick is still a work in progress, so this is just a start! :3 )
what is zootopia and who are zootopians???
Translating Zootopia into the ‘real world’ was a really interesting thought process. For now I’ve assumed that Zootopians are kind of like this other humanoid species that are born with animal abilities, and these generations of families then took on the traits and aesthetic of the abilities they’re born with.
So like the Wildes are the classic red fox (vulpes vulpes), and they have traits akin to red foxes. But I’ve headcanoned that Mrs Wilde comes from an arctic fox family, so she is probably better suited to colder weather (she’s gone to live in Tundratown with her sister while Nick’s in Elias), and Nick has inherited (??) that trait, so he’s gonna have a nifty resistance to cold. Just a little bit.
younger nick wilde:
Nick was the cutest kid on the block, that is a fact.
His father was the eldest of three children, and Nick is an only child. But he grew up amongst his cousins (four in total). The Wildes don’t have a typical hierarchy — currently, the ‘head’ of the Wilde is his aunt. Nick’s father was tapped to be the head after his grandfather passed, but Nick’s father (once the smartest and slickest) stepped down when Nick was five years old.
When Nick was five, his aunts and uncles used him to con people at the carnival, having him as a distraction while they pickpocketed people who were taking care of ‘lost little Nick’. They praised him as a natural in the conning game. Mr Danny Wilde saw that his son was being praised for something that Nick had no idea about, and he saw his entire son’s life flash before his eyes: being roped into something he had no say in, and after that incident, he stepped away from cons.
Nick’s mother thoroughly supported this, but felt constantly criticized by her in-laws. She was not a con artist; in fact, she was a regular artist, whose skill lay in pottery.
After Mr Wilde stepped back, he spent time with his son and wife, taking them on trips around the world, and showering them with gifts. But the best gift he gave to his son was determination, to never forget who he was, and that only he could decide who he was.
Mr Wilde always had a dream of being a stage actor. He collected vinyls and loved old musicals, and also tried to keep track of newer musicals as they came out. He even auditioned for a few things in his retirement, and Nick remembers practicing lines with him. He even got a part in a local stage play, but the night of the first show, Nick’s father died in a car crash. Nick was twelve years old.
Rumours went around that the crash was intentional, a revenge from a person Mr Wilde had wronged in the past.
When Mr Wilde died, the rest of the Wildes thought that this would be a good time to bring Nick into the world of conning. But the year Mr Wilde died was also the year Nick had been studying to join boy scouts. The last thing his father had given him was the scout scarf, while his mother collected the uniform. He was not about to give up on the boy scouts, and — despite not knowing exactly why his heart felt this way — he was not about to disappoint his father.
He got his scout scarf from his dad and it has become his most TREASURED ITEM :(((
But then, the scouts rejected him. And the rejection hurt even more than the bruises and gashes he received from their attack. Somehow, even the kids knew that Wildes were bad news. To this day, Nick still didn’t know how they knew to just attack him. Did everyone really hate foxes like him? Had his family hurt everyone?
After the failure with the scouts, Nick became resigned, closed off. Then after a few months of being little more than a ghost in his house, he finally agreed to join his cousins in a confidence scheme they had picked up. The con almost went south before Nick saved the day, coming up with a quick story and getaway before his cousins could even blink.
Everyone praised him, especially his aunts and uncles, and everyone asked how he did it. Had he secretly been like this all along? Pretending that he wasn’t interested just because of his father? That hurt. But by now Nick had learned that the best way to avoid even more hurt was just to go along with it. Be what people want. Nothing could hurt more than losing his father and an opportunity with scouts within a year.
coming to elias:
So Nick’s twenty-two years old when Judy Hopps comes along. That’s a solid ten years of being one of the best con artists in Zootopia, and he gets bested by a carrot pen, a heart full of gold, and someone a foot shorter than him? Jesus Christ on a popsicle stick.
All right, maybe it isn't’ too bad. Maybe he kind of likes that he now has to find a new Nick Wilde, the one that Judy sees. Maybe, in the process, he’s chipping away at all these layers and suits he’s put on throughout the years and finding the real Nick Wilde.
She told him he had a good brain and to put it to good use, and maybe he liked that.
Though, let’s be clear, he is also actively trying to not be imprisoned for felony tax evasion.
Maybe, he also wanted the opportunity to atone for the mistakes of his family. Maybe, he wanted to help the Hopps name rise, if it meant Judy got her bad guy, or cracked her case, or whatever hare-brained adventure she was currently on. From finding missing persons to figuring out what drug was making Zootopians crazy, if it meant Judy wasn’t going to officially arrest him, then he’d do it. If it got Chief Bogo’s nose out of his hair, he’d do it. If it meant getting to finally be someone else … he’d do it.
When he told his family he was moving to Elias, the Wildes were less than pleased. Still, he smooth-talked his way out of questions and offers to have Judy suddenly ‘disappear’. He explained that it was the best way to get his record cleaned, to have the police officially off his tail. He was the new ‘face’ of the Wildes, now did they really want to screw that up for him?
In addition, he convinced his mother to leave their old apartment for a while. Nick knew that without him there, they would only make life worse for her with their passive-aggresive ways, so she now lives in Tundratown with her sister. (I’m going to say that his mother has arctic fox heritage !!!!)
at elias:
But it’s not that easy. Nick thought he could be a new person just like that but being new wasn’t like peeling an onion layer off. People had questions. People tested him. And while he somehow thought he’d be spending his days with Judy, she was dealing with her own problems and dreams.
Honestly, he doesn’t really know what he’s doing in Elias — he’s studying now? In some fancy-schmancy university? Paid by the Zootopia Police Department? He’d be an idiot to complain. But it all seemed like too fast.
So what does he do? Every now and then, he dabbles in a confidence scheme. Just to keep training that muscle, in case Elias doesn’t work out, and in case the new person he’s trying to be … just doesn’t work out for him.
He doesn’t really have much hope. But he knew his father would want him to try. So until he knows for certain that life is hopeless and he’s nothing more than a sly fox  … he’ll keep trying.
quick nick facts:
He has just arrived at Elias woohoo (from the time of first rping, he would have been there for at least a week already)
He studies a Bachelor of Commerce/Arts because he thought well why not, it’s paid for and he might learn something useful
He lives at the university dorms
He is a coffeeholic
His education is paid for by the ZPD (or the government? Mayor Lionheart?)
He’s watching Snake Eyes casino very carefully, not entirely sure if he should dip his toes into that business or not. Snakes needed to be watched more than foxes, in his opinion.
He has no opinion on the ‘good or bad’ of villains like Maleficent, in fact he thinks it’s all really interesting and entertaining. Kind of like a very elaborate soap opera.
He thinks that the majority of people in Elias will likely be of the same mind as Judy Hopps (crime is bad boohoo) so he really tries to keep the cons low profile and never the same one twice.
He’s not stupid, he knows when he’s out of his depth so he tries to lay low in general.
He keeps a notebook of all the people he meets, with little notes on what he thinks of them. At least in Zootopia it was easy to assume things about people, but Elias was a whole new ballgame.
He can be incredibly patient and cool as a cucumber lmao but quickly gets uncool when he feels he’s in danger. He doesn’t really ‘um’ or ‘ah’ or get nervous except around people that really get under his skin. Like Judy Hopps.
Nicknames. All the time. He’s annoying.
There are opportunities in Elias, but he won’t go for any of them because he doesn’t know if he even wants to stay here forever. Zootopia is still his home. To him (for now) Elias is just a really expensive, immersive vacation.
taken connections
judy hopps. friendly annoyance.
wanted connections
people involved in crime that he could make friends with or just talk to? he’s not looking to join anything, but it’d be nice to have similar-background connections. (......maybe he could join?? who knows !!)
people who go to uni
nick is a bit of a floater, so i could see him just being comfortable going anywhere at anytime. i’ll see how he goes, and i am always open to friends/frenemies/enemies/hookups etc. etc. !!
