“Boy, one day I’d like to write a fic in a popular, contemporary fandom and see if my work really does hold up when it gets enough views to tell the difference between quality and ‘this is the only thing anyone’s written for them in years and we’re starving.’“
Anyway, here’s a fic for a pairing in a fandom that’s over ten years old.  There were seven other fics on this pairing.  The total for the entire series is under 80.  I am so good at this.
But for all five of you who still hang out here: how we feelin’ TotoMimi gang?!  The Atelier series is a ton of fun, I love it, and the Arland games in particular are just a good time playing through.  Mimi is one of my favorites, I adore her dynamic with Totori, and it’s the only one I’m willing to say wasn’t bait because how in the hell do you present this image with the PS3 trophy being called “Friendship, Love” and expect anyone to interpret that as anything other than gay?  They are in lesbians, and the devs were too cowardly to directly call it what it is and went with traditional “friendship” route, which leads to the subject of this fic.  Mimi, ever unable to speak her feelings clearly, backed out of being direct and is determined to fix this by honestly telling Totori she loves her.
And if you’re not one of the maybe three followers of mine who know anything about this series...maybe you should check it out.  The series is fun and good and nothing is wrong.  It’s on Switch and certainly, definitely functions without any kind of bugs.  Just come join me down in the fandom pits.  I assure you, I am perfectly normal about these games.

Weirdest Start of my life
I heard of the Atelier Series back in about 2011-2012 (Around the time Totori was new) through a facebook meme page ran by a huge JRPG fan. I didnt pay too much attention to it at first because I used to be a broke kid and all I had was a GBA and a Gamecube, I didnt know the series had a long way from 1997, starting with Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg. The series consists of self contained trilogies or sagas of sorts like Salburg, Iris, Mana Khemia, Arland, Mysterious and Secret, whether you start from the very first or even newer entries like Ryza, it’s always ok.
The Arland Trilogy however proved to me a very weird start for me. I played my share of JRPGs in the past but nothing like the Atelier Series, having to collect items to create better ones? I did try of crafting mechanisms but this one got me confused at first. Worst of all last year I decided to start with Totori of all things, not the best place to start I know. After I got the bad ending I tried Rorona, having to scramble around objectives on a deadline was chaos but I managed a normal ending (High score on final assignment but popularity below 30%).
Fast forward a year later I played through Rorona again knowing full well what I’m doing all things considered. I beat Rorona with the true ending, and did give Totori a second go again, this time I succeeded but not quite as I needed to complete a certain objective but I managed a normal ending so it wasnt as sour as my first time. With Meruru I got a normal ending as well, but I had fun playing it as well.
The problem with this trilogy is the constant deadlines you have to meet and the quests that pile up on you, most adviceable to try and make the best equipment so your start wont feel as rough. Rorona and Meruru start off strong, but Totori is very useless at the start so you have to get other party members fight for her in the beginning of the game until you get her better equipment.
Overall once you get the hang of it you feel like you can do everything! DX versions are the best to play now, available on PC, Switch and PS4.

November 17th, 2023 - Atelier Meruru
After putting up with Totori, I wasn't sure what to expect from the next game and thankfully, I had a much better experience. I actually really liked playing through this one and for me, it's the best in the Arland trilogy. The time limit works the same as the previous game: accomplish your goal within three years and you get an extension. Meruru follows the princess of Arls who wants to become an alchemist, but she's only allowed to under the condition she uses alchemy to help develop the kingdom.
You earn points by opening up areas, defeating specific monsters, making and delivering equipment, and various other tasks. Get enough points to get your rank up and you can also use them to build facilities that will help get you through the game. A lot of them aren't too difficult to accomplish and really only get hard to keep up with near the end. This time around, it isn't that hard to upgrade your gear and the requests had no deadlines so it was a lot less stressful to play through.
The only really difficult part was figuring out what tasks to focus on first because I ended up with a lot of them near the end. The map system is pretty much the same, but there aren't any random encounters to worry about, thankfully. Characters leveled up at a pretty good rate too, instead of being painfully slow. The UI and everything looked and felt much nicer too. After how dated and messy Totori was, I was relieved. I'm sure I could have gotten a better ending, but the one I saw wasn't really that bad.
It was pretty much a "good enough" ending. There wasn't much I found annoying and I really enjoyed going from the beginning to the end. Several characters from the previous games return and interact and they handle it a bit differently from future "third games". In this one, we actually have all of the main three protagonists hanging out a lot, even sharing an Atelier. I'm sure I'll return to this game eventually since it turned out to be pretty good.

Working on the next chapter of Foolish Chances and the ending is killing me. Not like, “Oh this is going to be so emotional and powerful” killing, but “What the fuck how do I end this why is this not working” killing. I left myself a message “[Maybe add more emotion here]” which is surprisingly helpful, note sarcasm.
So my choices are shorter chapter with the finished scene, and move the (first?) smut scene to chapter three instead, or try to write something to wrap the originally intended scene even though I have a “ this sucks, needs more emotion” which I’m struggling with.
I think I’m going to eat something and have a tea. Things always looks different when breakfast has been had.
