3 trends binnen de game-industrie

Cloud gaming

Cloud gaming is een manier van gamen die van circa 2019 werd geïntroduceerd tot de algemene ervaring van gaming over de hele wereld. Deze manier van gamen werkt als volgt: Het streamt games naar een apparaat waarop gegamed wordt vanaf een externe server in plaats van het gamen vanaf de console of computer zelf, wat we normaal gesproken gewend zijn.

Dit is belangrijk voor de industrie, omdat het de drempel voor gamen zwaar verlaagd, omdat het niet meer nodig is voor mensen om bepaalde hardware te bezitten om ‘’grote’’ games te spelen. Ook laat het mensen toe om direct een game te spelen in niet te hoeven wachten op een download tijd. Ikzelf heb dit wel eens geprobeerd en het is super fijn en efficiënt om te zien of je een game leuk vindt voordat je het koopt als je er wel geld voor hebt.

Virtual Reality (VR) en Augmented Reality (AR)

VR en AR zijn technologieën die zijn ontwikkeld om je helemaal te kunnen wanen in de game ervaring en maakt de grens tussen gamen en de realiteit dunner dan ooit. VR zorgt er, door middel van een bril, voor dat de speler zit letterlijk begeeft in de gameomgeving van de game die hij speelt. Hij is zelf het gamekarakter en kan om zich heen kijken en met bepaalde apparatuur zelfs dingen oppakken. AR staat daar een soort van tegenover, dit plaats juist virtuele objecten in de echte wereld door middel van, bijvoorbeeld een camera of een beamer (soms is het ook interactief).

Dit is belangrijk voor de industrie, omdat het simpelweg een nieuwe manier van gamen verzorgd die mensen kunnen ontdekken en zorgt voor meer realisme. Maar wat ik het belangrijkst vind aan VR en AR is dat het heel goed gebruikt kan worden voor onderwijs en onderzoek binnen en buiten de industrie. Zelf denk ik wel dat VR en AR leuk zijn, maar ik twijfel of het goed voor je is aangezien ik me, uit ervaring altijd super ziek voel als ik de bril weer af doe, haha.

Games as a Service (GaaS)

GaaS is een trend die nu al een goed aantal jaren van toepassing is binnen de industrie en veel wordt gebruikt door grote gameontwikkelaars. Het houdt in de games niet enkel bestaat uit een eenmalige transactie voor een totaal afgemaakt product, maar focust zich op het blijven updaten van games om het interessant te houden. Dit wordt gedaan door simpelweg uitbreidingen (soms tegen betaling in de vorm van een DLC), abonnementen of micro-transacties.

Voor de industrie kan dit volgens mij goed zijn, omdat het voor bedrijven voor een hoger inkomen zorgt uit 1 game en hierdoor kunnen ze verder ontwikkelen of nieuwe games ontwikkelen. Ook zorgt het (naar mijn idee) bij veel van de GaaS games voor een grote hoeveelheid aan merchandise en trends, omdat bijvoorbeeld bij micro-transacties zorgt voor herkenbare karakters of dansjes. Erg leuk naar mijn mening :)
