i want to break my only-art-posts rule on here for just a moment, to talk about about fred jones as a canon autistic character and what he's meant to me personally.
my childhood love of scooby doo suddenly reawaked back in november of 2021, which just so happened to be around the time i was seriously questioning that i may be autistic. the realisation put so much into perspective, but i was equally afraid and uneasy about it all. therefore, i began to rewatch mystery incorporated as a source of comfort.
and just... there was a character who was a good leader, a loyal friend, a desirable romantic partner. there was a character who represented this unshakeable force of good in a town otherwise founded upon cynicism and spite. there was a character who, yes, was treated as the butt of the joke from time to time. but even despite that, was a surprisingly thoughtful representation of how an autistic teenager might navigate emotions, relationships, and the world at large.
the more i watched of this version of fred, the more i doubted that his sheer amount of autistic traits were purely a coincidence. and sure enough, i discovered that mitch watson (sdmi showrunner) confirmed on the unmasked history of scooby doo podcast that fred was indeed written with autism in mind.

for a while, this was knowledge that i celebrated quietly. i told a couple of people who were interested, but that was about it. what mattered most to me was that it was canon, and that this character i had loved since i was a child was just like me. talking too much about his interests, missing social cues, being confused by big emotions... the list went on. it sounds silly to say about a cartoon character, but identifying with fred's portrayal in sdmi (and subsequent scooby media influenced by it) genuinely helped me to accept and even love myself as an autistic person, in a time when i was feeling hopeless for realising what had made me so different all my life.
as i continued to fall down the scooby rabbit hole, i encountered fred moments new and old that would always cheer me up. i decided to compile them into a short youtube video, mostly just for my own self-indulgence. i had absolutely no idea what i was getting myself into (/pos).
over a year on, most notably following the release of the hbo velma series, my video absolutely blew up. to the point where it currently stands at 825k views, which is utterly unfathomable to me. thousands of people who cared about this character like i did flooded the comments, expressing anger at his most recent portrayal and genuine love for his portrayals in past media.
however, the comments that especially made my day were those like: "how did i not realise that fred has a special interest in nets?", "he's autistic, let him infodump!", and those of a similar wording. in that comments section, as well as on tumblr, canonically autistic fred seemed to have become widespread, accepted and celebrated, showcased in comments with hundreds of likes and posts with hundreds of notes. it absolutely floored me, and i was delighted to have contributed to it.
i haven't made this post to pat myself on the back for throwing some clips together and getting a lot of views, nor to say "i knew it first!" about fred being autistic. i am simply looking back in retrospective, and getting incredibly misty-eyed over the fact that people are newly appreciating this character that has helped me through so much and been instrumental in leading me to my official autism diagnosis. you can see the sappy post i made about it on my old scooby sideblog here.
in summary, this is yet another story about how representation matters! even if it comes in the form of a historically overlooked teenage mystery solver from a 50+ year old cartoon franchise. what matters most is that it was more than just a headcanon, and has changed my life for the better.

OC infodump: Forest
So Forest is an OC I created fairly recently; I first came up with him back in April 2020.
He had only a few specific characteristics at that point(green hair & freckles, trans & gender non-conforming) and those stayed consistent as I ended up developing him more as the years went by.
Around 2021, I made an AU of with him & other OCs, and that gave me the chance to flesh him out a bit more.
I made him Black & Iranian(his dad is Afro-Latino & his mom is Iranian), I gave him more curlier hair & let his roots show a bit, and I expanded more on his interpersonal traits to try & expand his backstory a bit.
Short backstory summary: he was someone who had struggled with his identity growing up & had a hard time making friends(in part due to undiagnosed autism), so he ended up keeping to himself at times. In 7th grade, he met Liana, who instantly befriended him & she was his first best friend. Over time, his friend group grew & so did his confidence in himself. During high school, he started to dress in a more alternative/punk-ish fashion, since he didn't feel comfortable wearing "typical" feminine clothes; this was also when he started dying his hair.
After high school & entering college, he realized a couple things about himself:
He's transgender(once he became aware of that, he felt a bit more comfortable dressing femininely, now that he understands the distinction between gender identity & gender presentation)
He's demisexual; he's had a few FWBs in college, but only with people he's felt comfortable with & close to(prior to this, he thought he was just bisexual, but biromantic is more fitting for him now)
He's in love with Liana; this one was a bit difficult to accept cause some of his insecurities about relationships & himself made him feel unsure about taking his relationship with her to that level. Eventually he does tell her how he feels....about a year or two after graduating college.
Forest has become a very precious OC for me since I first made him; I got to explore some of my thoughts & feelings on sexuality, gender identity & presentation through him.
I also feel more confident with his design over the years, I like how I've given him some of my own personal traits & have that reflected within him. And I've made a bunch of AUs with him to for fun & I've got so many already!
He's been a big creative inspiration for me for my art & writing, and I'm really glad this character I made on a whim became very important to my craft & my life!!
I hope to create more stuff with him soon!!

most autistic people probably have higher support needs than nondisabled neurotypical allistics.
which is probably why some autistic people so strongly object to being labeled “low” support needs because compared to nondisabled allistics their support needs are not low.
however.
autistic support needs is not about comparing to an nondisabled allistic.
autistic support needs is about comparing to other autistics.
compared to other autistics, you if you can live relatively independently, don’t need assistance on bADLs, can keep own safety, etc, you have lower support needs than many autistics.
you can be low support needs autistic while needing a lot more support compared to nondisabled allistics. but that’s not who is being compared to.
30% of autistics have an intellectual disability. 20% - 50% of autistics never develop spoken words beyond a few utterances (minimally speaking). having ID & being nonspeaking doesn’t automatically mean high support needs autistic, but. i use this statistic to show that the experience of autism in online autistic community simply does not represent whole autistic experience.

if someone want their autism cured, good for them i support them
if someone want their disability cured, no matter how scientifically impossible sounding with the limited science knowledge we have, no matter if other people with the same disability don’t want it cured, i validate them i believe them i don’t argue with them
i am begging disability advocates to actually learn what “disability is a social construct” and social model of disability and “capitalism is disabling” means before using it against other disabled people, especially disabled people more limited & with more support needs than you

"people accept the uwu cute and quirky autistic traits like special interests and just being socially awkward" I don't know how anyone managed to believe that being viewed as "uwu cute and quirky" is acceptance like that's actually trivialising and romanticising. There are no autistic people who are just "cute and quirky" all the time that is a myth and a caricature. Special interests are stigmatised the moment they stop being useful or amusing to allistics. "Socially awkward " is at best a large understatement of the difficulties you need to face to fit the criteria. Just because it doesn't show all the time doesn't mean a person isn't struggling, and they're not truly being accepted if that struggle isn't recognised.

"Autism wouldn't be a disability if society was different"
Full offense I didn't spend 18 years of life unable to take proper care of my hair because of society. People should've been more understanding, they shouldn't have stared and bullied me and treated me like the rest of me didn't matter, but they were right to be concerned. It was unhygienic.
There's never going to be a society with no difficult sensory input to tolerate, that's literally impossible. When I'm overloaded I can't function like usual. This could be improved with societal changes, but it'll always exist.
If everyone in society was accepting of my different social behaviour, I'd still miss cues and meanings that come naturally to most. That's disabling. Even if people are willing to explain, that's a disability accommodation. Accommodations don't make us not disabled.
We don't need a society where we're not disabled, we need a society where being disabled is accepted and accommodated as much as possible.

here’s a bizarre neurodivergent lifehack:
in situations when I would normally inform others of my disability by saying “I have adhd/autism”, I instead say “I have a neurodevelopmental disorder” and man, does that make a difference.
instead of rolling eyes or “but you don’t look autistic”, I receive looks of compassion and understanding. it’s kinda wild. and although I really wish I didn’t have to reword it, it does make a difference, in my experience.

Being autistic is like. Zigzags while walking. Walks into wall. Walks into doorframe. Walks into people. Bumps elbow on jamb. Bumps arm on fridge handle. Bumps hand on doorknob. Bumps leg on couch. Bumps ass on chair. Bumps hip on counter. Drops item. Picks up item. Drops item. Breaks item. Spills food. Spills liquids. Slams door unintentionally. Throws item unintentionally. Shouts unintentionally. Trips on object. Trips on threshold. Trips on wall corner. Trips on poorly tied shoelaces. Trips on feet. Trips on air. It literally doesn't matter how familiar a space is. I was in the same house for 15 years and still did this stuff daily. We have trouble with spatial awareness. It's a special kind of clumsy. 😔

I am proud to be autistic. I would not be me if I were not autistic. At the same time, I am exhausted because of it. I am tired of living in a world that is not made for me and will not accommodate me. I am learning as much as I can about autism so that I can understand myself and my needs better, but what it boils down to is that I will have to try harder. I must try harder than any allistic person to get what feels like half the results in life. It makes me sad. It makes me mad. It makes me desperate for any other answer or solution. But there is none. I just have to accept it. And that isn't easy. No, it's not.
Okay to reblog, but allistics don't add on (even if you're also ND).

petition to stop censoring captions-
we use captions like 99% of the time because of auditory processing issues (probably from our autism & adhd) which make it so, without captions, it takes a lot of focus to make sure we're hearing the right words and it's annoying to rewind to catch it and etc etc etc
the thing with that is, we use captions for convenience. deaf/HoH people need captions to know the audio, they don't have nearly as much of a choice.
so it's super frustrating to see them censored. the automated captions on youtube (besides being somewhat inaccurate) literally write swearwords like this: [_]. we don't even get a hint of the word, not even the sh*t or f*ck.
if people who don't use captions get to hear the swear word, put it in the captions. if it's beeped out in the audio, beep it out in the captions, but for the love of the stars stop infantilizing disability aids. if the audio says it, so do the captions. no exceptions.
(also I wish more youtubers actually manually put captions on their videos because the youtube automated ones are just. disappointing sometimes)

if someone puts a /j on a post that, to you, is obviously a joke? that just means the tag is not for you.

if someone puts a /g on a post that, to you, has no reason not to sound genuine? that just means the tag is not for you.
if someone puts a /nm on a post that, to you, sounds perfectly calm anyways? that just means the tag is not for you.
if someone puts "#unreality" on one of your shitposts, when you can clearly tell it's a joke/shitpost? that just means the tag is not for you.
this goes for literally any other tone tag, trigger tag, or content warning. the internet does not revolve around you, and you do not get to judge or make fun of other's accessibility measures or safety measures.

It's not made clear how Manfred died but I think it'd be rly ironic if he died from lead poisoning due to having a bullet in his shoulder for 15 years. Like. He got that bullet in his shoulder and shot Gregory in the exact same event. It would be a well-deserved irony if the bullet killed him, don't you think?

I feel like Phoenix and Edgeworth would talk very nonchalantly about the absurd things that have happened to them and it drives everyone else bonkers
Apollo tries coming to work with a rly bad cold, and Phoenix attempts to talk him out of it. Phoenix finally says "Look, Apollo, at least take some Coldkiller X. Just, uh... make sure it's not poisoned when you do." And Apollo's like "WTH IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN???"
Edgeworth is talking to a prosecutor going abroad and finds out that they're using iFly Airlines. "iFly?" he asks. "You should be careful on your flight. The last time I flew with them, I was framed for murder." He takes his tea and leaves the room while the other prosecutor is calling after him wanting to know the full story
Phoenix and Edgeworth are bickering like an old married couple (as per usual) and everyone around starts losing it when they bring up past experiences like that. It becomes a whole spectacle

I hate the summertime/the heat and humidity associated with it. The extreme heat makes me feel very tired and upset. Thank heavens for air conditioning, I suppose.

I often worry that I'll never make a friend. The only people I'm close to irl are people either above fifty or just below. My family makes me worry double, because they're always reminding me of this fact and pushing me to make a friend in person.

You know, I had heard there was another musical like Hamilton from the seventies called 1776, so I just went and looked up it's whole soundtrack, and I can safely say I think it's better than Hamilton in many ways.
Although the songs aren't the most catchy songs I've ever heard, they're still pretty good. Although I liked the few songs from Hamilton I did bother listening to, I found the songs from 1776 have more meaningful lyrics and delve into more dark topics.
Although I haven't seen either films movie adaptation, I can definitely say 1776 is far more historically accurate. 1776 doesn't hold back from discussing slavery and the facts that most everyone back then was at least slightly prejudiced. The song "molasses and rum" is proof of that. I've heard 1776 also deals with Thomas Jefferson being a slave owner far better than Hamilton does, although I can't back that claim up because I haven't seen footage with which to compare.
Finally, I'd just to mention that 1776 and Hamilton both have Main characters who are largely forgotten figures in US history: John Adams and Alexander Hamilton, respectively. The difference here is that John Adams is probably one of my favorite founder fathers, if only because both he and his son were abolitionists. Alexander Hamilton, however, was a slave owner and an elitist. Not exactly inspiring stuff, if you ask me.

I'm beginning to contemplate whether a post I saw on Reddit about masturbation acting as a stim has any truth to it. I say this because I'm beginning to look for explanations for my masturbation fixation/addiction/etc. I sometimes masturbate three times a day, something I myself consider abnormal.
Once you take into account my lack of sexual feelings towards anything other than writing (and sometimes photos in combination) alongside a fixation with reading erotica and making myself masturbate, and we might see why I don't truly want to chalk it all up to teenage libido. It very well could just be that, but the simplest solution is the hardest to accept, in my case.
