X-Files Collector’s Edition: I Want to Be Leaves (Fall Fics)

Time for fall fics! Apples, markets, changing colors, spicy scents, snappy weather-- and FBI agents sporting layered sweaters and cozy feelings.

May the Fictober season bring upon us more fall fics. All hail the fall fics!

Pattie’s Absconded

““Blow your stack, Scully. But the accounts here of power drainage, water suddenly leaving pools, ponds and reservoirs in 'beams' are all consistent with some sort of aircraft performing some act perhaps you haven't seen, but those people have." He handed another stack of folders to his partner. "Keep reading. And look at the pictures, too. The reports with pictures are always more fun to read. After sunset, we're going out to watch the night sky.””

Early S1 kicks off fall vibes with Scully less-than-enthusiastically helping Mulder investigate a power plant where multiple workers have been seeing UFOs.

Kelly Keil’s (FFN) Only Apples (FFN)

““When he picks her up, she asks again about their destination but he remains mute. With resignation she joins him in the car, prepared for a long journey.

Mulder drives the car further and further from civilization, whistling tunelessly through his teeth. Scully sits beside him, thinking how much she dislikes surprises. Neither speaks.

As the miles fly by, she fingers her old flannel shirt and stares down at her worn boots. Brilliant red and gold trees flash by her window and geese fly south for winter against a vivid blue sky.””

Scully has lost sight of life in the drudgery of the mission. Mulder surprises her with a trip to an autumn orchard, reawakening her passion.

Tinysmolfluff’s Autumn Coffee

““Can we go for a walk? – he asked quietly and she was about to protest that it’s freezing outside, but there was something vulnerable in his eyes, something urgent, so she just nodded and they left the café. They walked away from it, the dry leaves crunching under their shoes, the cold fall air picking at their faces.””

Set after Redux II, Scully is woken up by Mulder, who wants to see her. Both are still vulnerable after her close shave with death.

““That, over there,” he says, holding out his cup. He nods toward a tree in the distance. “Is that not a perfect, untouched pile of leaves?””

Mulder dumps he and Scully in a leaf pile. Scully loves him but doesn’t make a move... yet.

Scully ponders on death; and both she and Mulder vow (in their own ways) not to leave the other behind.

Erin M. Blair’s Autumn Falls

““She turned to face Mulder, still holding the leaf in her hand. "Mulder," she asked, not yet willing to look at him fully. "Do you remember what you said a few years ago...about how things were going to change for us?”"

AU after The End-- Mulder and Scully observe the fall leaves soon after the burning of their office. Scully recalls his words at the end of Tooms, and both reflect that these changes can be good, too.

“It’s beautiful,” Scully says, her voice as magical as the colorful foliage.”“

Mulder takes Scully to Farmer’s Market while gazing. He makes the first move after apple eating, leaf watching, and companionable shopping.

A Day As Sweet As Pie (Ao3)

““I'm in charge of the eggs," William says, pointing at the carton. He's been watching them like a hawk for days, afraid Mulder would use them to make scrambled eggs. That happened last week and William has vowed to never let the eggs out of his sight again.

"You are, egg man," Mulder says and the boy giggles.””

Will is SO excited to make Maggie’s pumpkin pie recipe for her; and his parents help him make up the recipe and keep his impatience at bay.

““Without warning, Mulder scoops up a pile of leaves and tosses them in her direction. They smell like dirt and rain and crunch as they fall around her feet. Three stick in her hair like a makeshift crown.””

Mulder invites Scully out to fall festival to highlight the new shift in their relationship. Short fluff ensues.

““They bought food from the little deli that was near their office. A quaint little place that sold really good sandwiches and salads, and sweet potato pie that has Mulder buy two slices of. He insists the other one isn't for him, but Scully knows better.””

Scully pouts until Mulder agrees to enjoy the outside fall weather. He lends her his coat, and cheekily sets up date (even though they’re already dating.)

““Hey,” he says, and pulls back to look at her. “You okay? I asked what the plan is, G-woman.” She nods conservatively but her eyes give away her excitement.

“Apple picking, G-man.””

Early into their new relationship, Scully is excited to wake Mulder early to go apple picking. Both enjoy teasing each other and pouting playfully.

““The moment she walked up the steps and took a deep breath, turned to him and said, “It’s perfect,” was the moment he realized just how much time they had spent being upset and stressed. She looked ten years younger that day, with a braid hanging over her shoulder.””

Pre-IWTB-- Mulder watches Scully happily sinking into their new domesticity.

““He catches the blissful aroma of home as soon as he walks in her door: sugar and cinnamon and vanilla. He had wondered why she’d be calling him in the middle of a Sunday afternoon with a voice of purpose requesting he drop by.””

Scully invites Mulder over for cookies. Both are touched by their first, intentional exchanges of love.

Red’s Autumn

““As the light faded, the air grew colder and the hairs on her arms stood up, goosepimples disturbing the smoothness of her pale skin. A cool breeze bothered a cluster of leaves near her feet, tossing them carelessly around her for several long seconds. Her shadow slowly blended into the grey shadows of the evening, the waning moon gradually rising in the sky and bathing her in milky-white light.””

Set Season 8-- Scully stares at the stars, alone, wondering where Mulder is.

Scully visits Melissa’s grave to update her on life and the birth of her daughter. Mulder stealth-surprises her with their napping baby.

Mulder’s enjoyment of autumn-- like many things in his life-- was destroyed by the losses he’d received; but having Scully, and now his daughter, to experience it anew reignites his fondness.

ImWatchingTheMagician’s Pumpkin

““Hey hey little bear” Mulder scoops the girl up, before she can release her –almost- 2 year old destructive behavior on Siegel’s pumpkins.””

Mulder and Scully’s have to head-off their precocious toddler from running rampant through a pumpkin patch because of the lofty glare of its farmer.

I’ve written for Hannibal, Battlestar Galactica, The Fall, and The X-Files, but only The X-Files at this point.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

The Parting Glass (smut)

5. Do you respond to comments?

Yes and no. Not like I should. I am so deeply, truly grateful for every single one.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Well, I killed William in Inhaling the Different Dawn, but that wasn’t at the end.

Maybe Where The Vines Cling Crimson? Scully’s cancer comes back and her fate is ambiguous. And I had Scully kill Emily in Alabaster Stones. But I think that was the right ending for both of them.

As a mother? A Basket of Reeds, where Scully gives William away. I can’t even reread it without a lump in my throat, man.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Tent of Shelter is fluffy and lovely gets a lot of love, and was inspired by a STUNNING manip by @avocadoave but I personally think In The Gale. It’s the one that, to me, feels the most like a grownup relationship of two people processing some trauma. I think that’s an ending that’s happy and also real - like “I don’t love being broken, but I can survive being broken with you.” Two abeyances that lean…

Foxfire for similar reasons. I real love that little story, which I wrote thanks to @perplexistan

I’m 43. I’ve been married for well over two decades and let me tell you that young love is a gift and mature love is a craft.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Some! And that’s really great too, that people read words I wrote and felt so passionately that they left me words about those feelings. What a strange but profound compliment!

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do. PWP isn’t my personal taste so even though I wrote a LOT of smut for the old pornbattles at LJ I wanted the smut to still tell a story.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I can’t say it’s especially crazy, but Fern Hill is a Mulder/Stella Gibson crossover. There are a few little ficlets with XF/Silence of the Lambs crossovers in my Inbox Prompts series.

Oh fuck! Wait! I wrote a Fall/Hannibal/XF crossover called Anthemoessa where Stella, Scully, and Bedelia all meet. Okay that’s it. That wins.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Years ago. God, isn’t that sad? To need positive reinforcement that much?

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! It was SUCH a compliment!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I have - The Common Fate of All Things Rare

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Mr. Virgata and me. Followed by Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, who literally invented the word. ❤️

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

The Fisher King

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I do pretty good banter and my education makes me pretty good at the sciencey bits.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I get too lost in descriptions and I try too hard to be clever. I do my best to self edit but sometimes I reread things and I’m like oh my GOD SHUT YOUR PRETENTIOUS ASS UP.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I’ve done it for Bedelia and Hannibal in Italian. I’m not sure I understand the question?

19. First fandom you wrote for?

TXF, my one true love.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

I don’t know that I have a favorite per se. I am most proud of the ones that challenged me to do something outside my comfort zone. Samson is one of mytop fives even though it’s Mulder/Diana. I think I did a nice job. I also wrote Pair of Aces/Double or Nothing which is Scully/Byers.

But I do really love the world of Petrichor and Singing of Mount Abora, and I like the cases.

OMG. Like a House Hunters Renovation. Where a designer comes and Mulder wants more MASCULINE style and Scully wants COZY, like the house she grew up in, and the designer is like THIS IS GONNA BE GREAT BECAUSE IT ISN’T COOKIE-CUTTER, so we’re gonna have a marble-look countertop and white Shaker-style cabinets and a pop of navy blue and a farmhouse sink and subway tile, like no one else has EVER had, not even every LITERAL SINGLE PERSON who has EVER been on this ENTIRE NETWORK since the beginning of time, and a big island a BIG island, and wood-look tile. NO no, but the subway tile is slightly larger so it’s UNIQUE! And we’re gonna open ALL this up, do NOT worry, we did NOT check to see if it was structurally sound and if it isn’t it’ll cost you an unforeseen $25,000, but I’m sure it’ll be fine, since it has NEVER ONCE BEFORE been fine but this time it definitely will be.

And there are all kinds of disasters, but ALSO, half the act-outs are some totally manufactured thing like “oh no, does the countertop not fit???” and it comes back from commercial and they’re like “Nope! Well, good.” And there’s one DIY project that they tackle themselves to save money in the budget and it’s something super easy like painting a wall and they totally fuck it up and end up having the contractor do it in five minutes instead.

And of course it starts with the little set piece of the woman putting on safety goggles and giggling while taking a cutesy swing with the hammer at the old countertops, except it’s Scully, and she reduces it to rubble immediately and the contractor has to duck out of the way of flying shards. And Mulder is like “Haha, good job, honey! Pent-up aggression! haha”

It would even work to have them fakely look at three houses first even though they already own a house, SINCE THAT’S LITERALLY ALSO THE CASE ON HOUSE HUNTERS.

And at the end there’s a totally obvious reveal that they are pregnant. And they are, of course, cutting fruit in the last scene, as in every House Hunters episode ever filmed.

Omg, I actually...I might write that.

You guys have no idea how much HHR I watch.

Jersey Devil: what's the most likely reason you'd end up in jail today?

Trespassing. I wasn’t actually trespassing! I was driving a company car to my endless lecture today and trying to return they keys but I was so late, the room where I am supposed to return the keys was locked. I was trying to figure out how get in and the cleaning crew were looking at me super weird, because I didn’t have my badge in clear view. I was probably a few seconds away from getting the cops called on me. :-)
