Waffles for Esther

A solo journaling game by Pandion Games

Materials

game manual

a journal or other recording method

standard deck of cards, minus jokers

a set of polyhedral dice (or digital ones)

Premise

As the waitress of a small-town diner, your mission is to make every customer who sits down for a drink and a meal as happy as can be while trying to balance familiarity and professionalism juuust right. Among the regulars is Esther, who always comes in at the same time each day to order the same items from the menu: a coffee (one sugar and a splash of milk), the diner’s signature waffles (with two sliced strawberries and apple jam syrup on the side) and some hashbrowns (with extra ketchup). However, as you turn to deliver Esther’s waffles, she has gone missing – and as the pinnacle of customer service, you cannot have that! Embark on a mission to solve the mystery of Esther’s disappearance and ensure that she gets her waffles, preferably in one piece.

Mechanics

Waffles for Esther is based on a set of randomized prompts working together to help tell you a story, aided by a simple but effective skill check system.

You begin by setting up the game, giving your character a name and a bit of a background. It is also recommended that you create a personal connection to the town by drawing a map of the provided locations (or make up your own to change it up). Each round begins with you choosing a location to investigate and rolling on a random complication you encounter there. A skill check (Waitress and Detective, respectively a d12 and d10 at the beginning) determines your success – will you find a clue or will your inquiries into the mystery result in hilarious chaos? Clues are provided as a list of random items you draw from a standard deck of cards. The more clues you can gather during your hijinks, the better your chances of getting the conclusion right and solving the mystery, as the number of clues raises the value of the die you can roll in a final check at the end of your game.

While succeeding might seem easy at first, every time you fail a skill check reduces the value of the skill die you used – and you can only replenish your skills once! So, make sure to roll well…it’s for Esther, after all.

Thoughts and Examples from my Playthrough

What makes this premise work so well is the figure of Esther, our mystery woman, an almost blank canvas except for her meticulous order, and the backdrop of a small town – the perfect recipe for a cozy mystery adventure! Combined with some hilarious, charming and outrageous prompts, a set of clues that fit well together no matter their combination and a skill check system that had me on (a comfortable) edge at all times, this is an enjoyable ride for a night in or a few relaxing minutes each day. Clearly, some inspiration has been taken from your well-known mystery shows and books, think Nancy Drew and Miss Marple, with an emphasis on a light-hearted tone. I appreciate that safety advice has been added nevertheless – it’s good to remind players that they’re in charge of their game, even if it veers off into an unintended direction.

I’m honestly a little awkward still in roping prompts together, but should they not add up in the end, you are free to leave out clues you cannot link to the mystery (albeit you’ll miss out on raising the die value further for your final check). Even so, some of my fails were much funnier than my successes – a game that makes failing something you almost look forward to truly celebrates hijinks the right way. Some of my favourite results were:

being run over by the ancient mailman and taking an unintended bath in the town lake,

almost hitting the president of the book club over the head and promptly being excluded from the same,

vomiting into an urn at the funeral home…one that was already filled with some poor man’s ashes, and

ending up in a LARP, where my arrival prompted the story to turn into a time travel adventure.

The hints and hijinks system is, in my opinion, what makes this unique and entertaining. It’s not often that games find a way to utilize failed rolls in a way that makes sense for the premise of the game and gives the player more than a “whelp, that was nothing” to work with.

Although my Esther was a courageous woman who fought for the town’s well-being, your Esther might be a more nefarious one – who can say? The game leaves ample room for interpretation, handing you the tools to tell your own story without dumping all the hard work of finding ideas on you. Of course, the usual challenges of journaling games are present: ultimately, it depends on you how much fun you’ll have with the narrative. If you’re like me and have trouble coming up with connections, there’s always the option to play with someone else and bounce ideas off each other. Another fun variety might be to replace the default locations with some from your own town or simply make them more outrageous (an abandoned theme park, perhaps, or an animal shelter, a gay bar…).

Let’s not forget to mention the delicious little graphics included in the manual as well as the simple but effective layout. Can we appreciate the colour choices made? Everything serves the retro small-town vibe and I’m here for it. The versatility of the system has already spawned a game jam, which is always a good sign for if a system works or not. I think Pandion Games managed to make both a perfectly executed journaling game as well as an incredibly useful SRD and I hope to see and play more games in the same vein as Waffles for Esther for some time to come!

you long for something more casual and light-hearted to brighten up your day.

you appreciate a game with lower stakes, where you won’t have to save the world for once (but…you could, if you wanted to).

12 Beach Games Ideas – Fun For Everyone

Going to the beach is always a blast. There are waves to boogey board on, water to splash around in, and sand to bury your friends in too. Some fun in the sun is definitely something we enjoy, and you probably do too.

When it’s summertime and you have the day off work, there is rarely anything better than getting your tan on and chillaxing on the beach. That being said, you can probably only take so many hours of being at the beach until you start to get bored. We all think that we can be at the beach from sunup until sundown without a hint of boredom, but more often than not, a few hours into any beach trip, and your excitement might just start to wane.

So, today we want to talk about some enjoyable beach games you can play to keep everybody occupied and in the fun zone. Let’s go over some family-friendly games and some more adult-friendly games you can try out the next time you hit the beach!

A Treasure Hunt

One fun activity that you can do at the beach is have a treasure hunt. Treasure hunts are really neat because everyone can join in. If you are just trying to keep the kids busy, then hide some toys and random treats nearby, so the kids can roam around looking for them.

It will keep the kids busy and give you some breathing space too. If you want a lot of free time, bury the treasure deep and hide it in difficult to find locations! You could also just make a list of random beach objects the kids have to find, like rocks, feathers, shells, and other such items that can be found on any beach.

This might be more for the kids, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t make an adult-friendly treasure hunt! If you are at the beach with your friends, hide some adult treats in the sand, around the dunes, behind grass, and other such places. We aren’t going to tell you what adult-friendly treats are, but we are sure you can use your imagination to come up with something that your friends will love to find.

Paddle Ball Toss Game

You know that game you used to play as a kid at the beach, the one with those Velcro covered balls and the paddles you held in your hands, also with Velcro? That’s exactly what we are talking about. Ok, so the point of that Velcro paddle ball game is somewhat unknown. Seriously, what’s the point of it? Who knows, nobody may ever know, but for some reason, everybody seems to love playing it!

Beach Pictionary

A cool beach game that is fit for everybody is beach Pictionary. One reason it’s so cool is because you don’t even need to buy the actual game to play. Sure, it might not be exactly like Pictionary, but if you wanted to play that exact same game, you could have just stayed at home! Anyway, if you want, create a list of pictures, or cards with things to draw on them. Get a couple of sticks, fine pointed ones if you can, and get to drawing in the sand.

You can have people pick cards and use their stick to draw in the sand whatever it says on the card. What you write on the cards is up to you, so you can have people draw some pretty outrageous or hilarious things. You can use kid topics for the young ones, or if it’s just you and friends, you can always go with some racier drawings too! Either way, it’s a super inexpensive or even free game to play at the beach, and it will absolutely make for some big laughs too.

Sand Games – Castles Anybody?

Alright, so this may not be exactly a beach game, but heck, what better to do at the beach than build things out of sand? Sandcastles, sand huts, forts, holes, and anything in between. Seriously, sand is already there, it’s free, and there’s an abundance of it too.

If you are at the beach with kids, get some buckets, little shovels, and whatever else belongs in a sandcastle-building arsenal, and get to work. It’s a great way to keep the kids occupied, and it’s something you might enjoy too. There are some pretty great sandcastle-building competitions out there. If all else fails, you can create a game out of it, to see who can build the best sandcastle or structure of whatever kind.

Not to mention, you can also bury people in the sand too. Maybe you can bury grandma in the sand while she sleeps and see how long it takes for her to notice that only her head is free. All jokes aside, you can definitely create some fun competitions out of burying people in the sand, maybe by creating a different body on the surface, such as that of a mermaid.

Who Can Get The Kite Up The Highest?

Another cool game to play at the beach is to see who can get their kite to fly the highest. Yes, you do need to have people who know how to fly kites, there has to be wind, and having a couple decent kites probably won’t hurt either. That said, you can easily find cheap kite, or make your own, so that shouldn’t be an issue. All this game involves is seeing who can get their kite to fly the highest. It’s simple in theory, but actually quite challenging!

Horseshoes

A great game to play for the adults, especially after a couple of beers (although in no way do we advocate public drinking), is a good old horseshoe game. There’s just something about adults, a cold beer, and a game of horseshoes that goes together. It’s a whole lot of fun, it’s challenging, and you can provide rewards for the winners too. Kids can play horseshoes too, but it is a pretty hard game, so they might just end up getting frustrated.

Bucket Relay

So, you probably know the whole egg and spoon race that kids play. Well, there are water bucket relays, kind of like this too. All you need for this are some buckets, some larger ones and smaller ones. Have the kids line up, like a relay race. They then have to run to the water, fill up a small bucket, run back without spilling any water, and dump it into the larger bucket.

The aim is to cycle through all players until the large bucket is full of water. It’s a fun beach game to play when there are 6 or more people present, whether kids or adult, as it is a team sport, so to speak. Make some teams, whether kids vs adults, family vs family, men vs women, or whatever else, and see who can fill up those buckets the fastest!

The Digging Game

You know something that will definitely keep the kids occupied for a good hour at the beach? Digging a hole, that’s what! Digging holes can be done with a bucket or shovel, but if you want to draw it out a bit, so it takes longer, get your kids to use their bare hands.

The aim of the game is to see who can dig the deepest hole. It’s super time consuming, it doesn’t cost a single penny, and for whatever reason, kids can’t seem to get enough of it. Sure, it might not be a super adult-oriented activity, unless you consider that you’ll probably get an hour of breathing room from hyper and sugar-filled kids.

Frisbee – Ultimate or Normal

Frisbee is another one of those games that can be played anywhere and by anyone, whether young or old, at the park or the beach, or anywhere in between. If you are with younger kids, you could just stick to good old frisbee, or in other words, playing catch with it and just throwing it back and forth.

However, if you have older kids in the mix, teenagers, or it’s just you and friends sans kids, you can always turn it into a game of ultimate frisbee. It’s fast paced, it requires some skill, and it’s got enough action to keep adults happy too. All you need is a frisbee and a fairly large area to play in, and people willing to run around in the hot sun.

Beach Bowling

Something that everybody seems to love doing is bowling. Whether you want to call it a sport or a game, it’s something that is quite enjoyable. Now, being in a dingy bowling alley isn’t always great, especially the smell, and even worse, those nasty bowling shoes that every Joe and Mary with stinky feet have worn over the past decade. Yet, when you go to the beach, you are out in the sun, there’s fresh air, and no need to wear bowling shoes.

Go to a dollar store or game store, get a small plastic bowling ball, or any kind of ball really, and get a set of plastic bowling pins. Yeah, you probably won’t be using a real bowling fall for this. You could even line up some bottles, so you don’t have to buy plastic pins. At any rate, beach bowling is something that everybody, young and old, can enjoy.

Rock Tower Building … An Inukshuk

Yet another fun beach game that is fun for all ages is a tower building game, or even a contest to see who can build the biggest and best Inukshuk. For those that don’t know, an Inukshuk is a rock statue of a person.

It’s fun because each person has to go find the right rocks to use to build a tower or statue, and then comes the real fun, trying to balance those rocks so they stay upright. No, it’s not nearly as easy as it sounds, but it is absolutely a fun challenge that will keep everybody occupied.

The Parachute Game

Parachute games are always fun. It’s where you get a big blanket, towel, or one of those parachute cloths that daycare centers have, you then put a ball on top of it, have people stand around it holding the towel or cloth, then see how high you can fling that ball up into the air. Sure, it doesn’t take much imagination or even skill really, but it can be a whole lot of fun, especially for the kids. It’s simple, fun, and doesn’t cost much either.

Conclusion

There are plenty of great games that you can play at the beach; some games are best for kids, but even those are fun for adults, because they allow for a few minutes of time without screaming kids, and yes, there are plenty of adult-friendly games too.

A trip to the beach doesn’t have to be just you sitting on a towel roasting in the sun. If you find the right people and the right games to play with them, it can be a big time blast—real fun in the sun.

OC: You play quite a strange, dark character on AHS:Cult. How did you prepare for the role?

LG: I read a lot about the Manson girls and biographies about cult leaders to see how they manipulated seemingly average normal people into doing horrific unspeakable things. I also decided to turn myself over to the process and not try to overthink it too much which is a real challenge for a type A person like myself. The character of Meadow was the most unlike me of any part I have ever played. I had to challenge myself in ways I haven’t before, which ended up being incredibly rewarding.

OC: What is the biggest challenge of the horror genre?

LG: The biggest challenge for me personally is to keep my performance grounded while acknowledging the darkly comedic moments. I had such a great time shooting this show that at times I worried it seemed like I was having too much fun!

OC: How do people react when they see you on the street?

LG: The show is still airing so mostly people beg me to tell them what’s going to happen. Which of course I do not!

OC: You also played outrageously mean Mary Cherry in Popular- how was that performance different?

LC: In playing Mary Cherry, I had zero concerns about making her real or grounded. The more insane she was the better, in my opinion. It was incredibly freeing to just go for it and be as outrageous and over the top as I could possibly be. She also thought she was the most gorgeous incredible person on the planet, which Meadow clearly did not. It was fun to get to play someone who had complete self-confidence no matter how misguided and incorrect she was.

OC: What is the best part of playing a character so mean?

LG: Getting to say horrible things to people’s faces with zero consequences.

OC: What explains Ryan Murphy’s enormous success?

LG: Incredible outrageous other-worldly talent combined with an unbelievable work ethic. Those two things happening simultaneously are incredibly rare. When they come together it is unstoppable magic.

OC: What is a typical day like when you are working?

LG: Usually a 5:30am call time which means waking up an hour or earlier before depending on where we are shooting. Make a latte in my Nespresso machine for the drive. Get to work and go through hair and makeup and pray they can cover my under eye bags. Eat too much candy at craft service. Usually I nap in my trailer during lunch after I inhale some lunch. Wrap after 12 or 14 hours, go home, wipe off my makeup and fall into bed.

OC: What is a typical day like when you’re not working?

LG: When I’m not working I am in full mom/wife mode. Get my daughter up at 6:45am, make her snack lunch and breakfast (which I should do the night before but I always forget). My husband drives her to school most mornings. After they leave I walk the dogs, take a shower, have coffee and catch up on emails and read the news. My whole family lives in L.A. so we see each other all the time. Sometimes I meet a friend for lunch or have a meeting and then it’s time to pick my daughter up from school. The afternoons and evenings are usually homework, dinner prep, and trying to finish my to do list of stuff that never ever gets done. Sometimes my husband and I try to sneak away for a dinner out but we don’t do it as much as we should. I have a million things I want to do but the day always seems to get away from me.

OC: As a mom how do you balance work-life with home-life.

LG: As any working mom will tell you it’s not easy, and a lot of the time I feel like I am letting everyone down. When I am working the hours can be very long, so thank god for FaceTime so I can see my kid. But it’s not a typical job. I can have periods off where I get to full time mom it every day for weeks, so that makes up for the really hard weeks where I feel like I haven’t seen her enough. I am lucky to have an awesome husband who is totally supportive of my work and has my back. I am also lucky to have my family live in L.A. so they can help cover me as well. I think as women we try to be all things to all people and that’s just not possible. I have to remind myself that moms are allowed to have dreams they want to pursue also!

OC: Favorite vacation spot?

LG: I have been lucky enough that I have been able to travel a lot. It is a very hard thing for me to answer because it’s almost impossible to pick a favorite. As basic and uninspired as this answer seems, it’s Hawaii. I have been to the Big Island at least 30 times and I never ever tire of it. The Four Seasons Hualalai is a fantastic destination to go to as a couple or with the entire family. There is something about the water and the air that is so restorative for me. As soon as I step off the plane I feel 50% less stressed.

OC: What’s the first thing you do when arriving in a hotel room?

LG: This is going to sound paranoid, but I immediately wipe down all surfaces I am going to be touching with an anti-bacterial wipe. I take the plastic bag that is in the ice bucket and wrap the tv remote with it. They never clean those things. When I was a kid and traveled with my grandparents, my grandmother would have me and my brother wait in the hall while she attacked the hotel room with Lysol. She gave me her craziness about germs!
