I’m watching the interview that Bill Hader did with Variety about reshooting Hank’s death, and I really appreciate his commitment to not sacrificing the structure and coherence of the show for the sake of fan service. Like while I do find it fun when showrunners occasionally give fans the stuff they want to see, I like it even more when the showrunners put the integrity of the show first and have faith in the fact that their audience will still enjoy it regardless.

**Major Season 4 Barry spoilers follow**

You know, I’ve been keeping up with Season 4 of Barry (if you haven’t watched it, it’s great), and though I appreciate most things about this show, I really appreciate the fact that it doesn’t feel the need to make the main character likeable anymore. 

At first, even though he was doing awful things for two season, you still had sympathy for Barry. Since last season, he’s become increasingly delusional and psychotic, to the point that he’s no longer a morally grey character, and is just a straight up villain. In epsiode 4, after he breaks out of prison, you spend the entire epsiode not knowing where he is, and just dreading the moment when he shows up and does something awful to one of the other characters who have all slowly become his victims in one way or another over the course of three seasons. The tension just grows and grows, until he finally makes his appearance at the end.

Lots of shows do the morally grey protagonist thing these days, but it’s so rare to see the protagonist truly shift into an irrevocably, unsympathetically evil person, and I love it. This show does exquisite character work.

i just finished barry and ...holy christ what an intense ending. my thoughts are still very in chorent about it and

i had been going back and forth on the show for a while because a) the few non-white characters on the show kept getting killed and b) shows with massive time skips usually fall apart. I still have my qualms with it but in the end it really killed or fucked like nearly every main character and i feel like the overarching theme was like how this one white guy really screwed everyone over and over again, perpetuating a cycle of violence with nearly endless ripple effects and got away with it (narratively, he gets murdered at the end) becoming a hero in the eyes of the public and his own son because the truth is buried through shitty cops and the death of those who have any sense of the truth. and in turn, it was another white guy whose is the first white guy's mentor who manipulates him over and over again placing him also at the center of the violence. the mentor also lives and gets away with it. and how like each of the characters who chose to enable his violence even when they didn't like it for their own gain and ends then perpetuate this cycle. those who try to end it or refuse it are then unable to shift the tide bc they are alone again this violent manipulative man.

#this is so incoherent but its also like the season 4 arc of how barry uses christianity to justify his violence and absolve himself #of wrongdoing. #like i went back and forth for a while whether this show was maintaining a criticism of the world as it is or was absolving these character #and therefore the systems and people that perpetuate violence and white supremacist violence in particular #but i feel like the finale landed on the right note #my mind could be changed tho bc idk it was really like barry getting everything there for a while #although bill haders been pretty clear time and again that hes not a good guy and i think has been like actively annoyed by those in barrys #corner #barry season 4 spoilers #barry hbo spoilers #barry hbo
