I really like the Cormoran Strike DETECTIVE series. I started reading the books at CAREER OF EVIL, thinking it was a DETECTIVE series. I went back and read the earlier books and joined groups to discuss STRIKE among like-minded people. To my horror: most other people had started at book one and bc "R was there from the beginning" [and they have the brains of 12 year olds] were treating the series like a romance with a bit of detective stuff instead of the other way round 🤦‍♀️
And despite all her BS interviews where JKR said just wanting....to have it be about the writing [maybe she did] I think she MEANT it to be a romance, disguised as a detective story, the whole time. Especially after ploughing through 🖤. The fandom in 🖤 is so similar to Tom Burke and STRIKE fandom. Not as viciously harmful but just as toxic. Twatter is JKR favourite platform. Her worst fans are there. All the rest of the fandom promote the romance. If you go against the narrative, you are vilified. I'll finish 🖤 and try the next one. But I've been sold a pup. The books evolve, sure. But I was sold a dodgy bill of goods, from the outset. I thought I was getting a detective series with 2 good friends. Not a romance whose tedium I would have to navigate between cases. And a junior partner [with a genuine knack for the work] that has gone from temp to making life threatening and agency threatening decisions in such a short period of time. Especially given her actual life experiences are abysmally lacking for someone her age. Plus, she is taking over a lot of Cs' actual work in the TV adaptations. 🤦‍♀️

Days 1 - 10 of editing teddy bears into Cormoran Strike screencaps until news about Troubled Blood comes out.
Was reminiscing about a time I edited a teddy bear into a few screencaps + made a cover for a fan fic, have accidentally turned it into a full blown series that I've managed to stay on top of.
Will be sharing them in chunks of ten here so I don't overwhelm the tag <3

PETITION: BRING THE TRENCH COAT BACK, BBC!!!
Tumblr media
We don't know where it went nor why (specially since in the BBC's Cuckoo's Calling Robin wraps Strike's wound not with her coat, like in the book, but with her scarf) BUT WE WANT THIS BEAUTIFUL COAT BACK.

I notice trolls are letting loose on another blog of mine. They don't like the fact that I dare to actually say something less than praiseworthy about C.B. STRIKE books. That makes me a "traitor" who doesn't "really like STRIKE at all". Yeah, that makes sense. 🤦‍♀️ I don't always praise my dog either; I still love him. They've warned people off "their" tags, like they own all the STRIKE related tags. 🤦‍♀️ GOOD. Hopefully it means less moronic comments.
Anyhoo, I'll continue to make appropriate comments [positive, negative and neutral] as I see fit. And anyone who wishes to have a look and wander along is welcome. I don't think JKR is transphobic and I support her right to free speech: take it or leave it. JKR is a good writer of thrillers but I haven't read another thing she has written.

What did you think of the live-action yu yu hakusho I confess that when I finished watching the first episode I had good expectations for the next ones but from episode 3 onwards they lost their hand.
To be honest, I loved it! They skipped all the introductory parts and got right down to the point. It's a rough adaptation of the original, but the action scenes are amazing! I felt the love of everyone involved towards Togashi's work. There were more highs than lows.
*CONTAINS SPOILERS*
Togashi wanted to draw a battle shounen, but since it was his first battle series, his editor advised him to take it easy at first. The first chapters were stand-alone adventures of Yusuke's spirit helping others. They weren't even adapted into the anime. Although I love those early stories, I don't think they are crucial to the story. I missed the comedy aspects though, that's what makes Yu Yu Hakusho so appealing. Yusuke's resurrection was a bit rushed, but I loved that "Hohoemi no Bakudan" (anime opening song) was playing on the truck's radio. I also didn't mind a 17-year old Yusuke or Kurama.
Even though they gave a more actual look to the characters, like Botan wearing peep-toes heels and Kuwabara with a dyed blonde hair instead of his iconic pompadour, we can still feel an atmosphere from the 90s in the scenery.
The stealing of the Artifacts of Darkness was so well adapted. Yusuke VS Gouki was an impressive fight. Masaru finally got to thank Yusuke, something that I missed in the original. Kurama telling his story to Yusuke at the hospital was genial as well. I think the motive that driven Hiei to steal the kouma sword in the live action suited him better. Togashi only made Hiei a main character because his editor told him so. That evil Hiei who kidnapped Keiko is so different from the Hiei who showed up later. Making Elder Toguro do the dirty job was more interesting! I'm just curious what they are going to do about Shigure in case of a second or third season. They probably have something in mind already!
Genkai's Tournament/Training was there in a different way. I don't care that much about Rando, but I missed all the pain the original Yusuke went thought to master the reiko hadouken technique. It was a little disappointing to see him absorbing the spirit wave with just an "okay". But, I'm glad they included some iconic moments of his training, like when he's upside-down balancing himself up with only his index finger on a needle.
Probably, what I missed the most was The Saint Beasts Arc. It was during this arc that the four guys got to know each other better and form a bond. Keiko and Botan also worked together and became friends. Considering the budget, I'm aware the live action didn't have time and money to produce it, they had to focus on the first big villain of Yu Hakusho, Younger Toguro.
Filming a whole Dark Tournament would be too hard, expensive, and maybe a little tiring to watch. Although the Rescue Yukina Arc and the Dark Tournament Saga were re-written, all elements from the original series were there:
They showed both Tarukane's mansion and The Hanging Neck Island;
Sakyo needed money to open a big hole to the Demon World. Goro Inagaki also slayed as Sakyo;
Younger Toguro wanted the same thing, he became too strong for the Human World;
Elder Toguro was insanely crazy. Probably, the best villain of Kenichi Takito's career;
A bunch of rich old dudes from BBC gambling;
Tarukane making Yukina cry to sell her hiruseki stones;
The random guy trying to help Yukina. Instead of killing her bird friends, Elder Toguro killed him.
There wasn't Botan and Keiko helping each other, but instead Keiko and Yukina teaming up, and I really enjoyed it;
Kuwabara falling in love at first sight, and asking Yukina to not hate all humans;
Best scenes and lines from Hiei VS Zeru and Kurama VS Roto were incorporated in the fights against Bui and Karasu;
Youko Kurama appeared! Jun Shison nailed it!
In the original, only Kuwabara didn't know about Genkai's death, I liked that in the live action Koenma kept it a secret from Yusuke as well. Elder Toguro making a puppet of Genkai out of his body was amazing!
Younger Toguro "killing" Kuwabara;
The memorable 100% Toguro VS Yusuke's spirit gun;
Sakyo telling the original plan was to make Toguro lose on purpose, so he could collect money from the rich. Also, betting his own life in front of Koenma;
It was interesting that Sakyo told his story and how he had bet his own life a few times to Tarukane instead of Toguro. I felt the Tarukane from the live action was a little bit more human. The actor did a pretty good job. Genkai's dead by the hands of Younger Toguro happened too quick and was disappointing, but they made up for that by showing their amazing goodbye scene in the Spirit World. Young Meiko Kaji was dazzling.
In the first episode, Koenma had sadness in his voice when he mentioned the former spirit detective. There was also that post-credits scene with Elder Toguro. I really hope there will be a second season. I think the Black Chapter Saga is much easier and more interesting to adapt.
I think those who have already read the manga or watched the anime, felt the love all the cast and staff have for Togashi's work. The new generation will probably buy the manga and watch the anime. The live action will surely bring new fans to the Yu Yu Hakusho franchise!
Netflix announced a new One Piece anime by Wit, made in partnership with Toei Animation. I'm also hoping that with the huge success of the live action, some anime studio or even Studio Pierrot will produce a remake of the Yu Yu Hakusho anime too.
By the way, I recommend watching the "Making of Yu Yu Hakusho". The main cast talks about all the trial-and-error process during the shoot. Action Director Takahito Ouchi also shares behind-the-scenes stories. They gave their blood to shoot this series! RESPECT!

I've actually seen that show with DT where they were relentlessly mocking Scots and I also thought it was too much. I mean, British shows often go way harder than anyone else in the world in the mocking department, but I felt in that case it went a bit overboard of general decency conventions. And DT seemed like he felt the same even while trying to cover it with feebly joking back, but it felt like he was both close to tears and just lost for words because he simply didn't expect these things were possible idk. It was an uncomfortable watch. But what I actually wanted to ask is what is your opinion on how RTD/BBC are handling the Millie situation? There is a shit storm on DW Twitter with people making memes equating the Eccleston and Millie cases, calling RTD 'vile and evil' (a quote) for not releasing a statement and actually hinting that he was the one to leak the stories about the diva behavior to Daily Mail to ruin Millie's career. Personally I think that ludicrous accusations aside, they don't need to release statements denying what's printed in tabloids, they never have (and it's not the first wild speculation DM picks up concerning Doctor Who) and they shouldn't, because as everyone knows, it only brings attention to the tabloid rumours and disseminates them further. But the RTD hate of the last couple of months (usual current showrunner hate) has accumulated and seems to be crescendoing right now with this situation (and I think is completely misguided in this case).
Im really not enough of a DW fan to be in the trenches like this but I’ve seen things floating around. All I can say is there are some well deserved critiques of RTD and his writing but he IS a good writer and i really do appreciate that he seems to be trying to adapt with the times and correct mistakes of the past. I don’t think it’s their fault that people are being weird about Millie. Nor do I think they were being unfair to her by giving her one season (that’s the RTD format baby!) but there comes a point where it gets so bad a statement is kind of the classy thing to do. I am really not plugged into this conversation enough to know whether it’s gotten so bad that RTD should say something versus if saying something would just throw fuel on tabloid trash. It sounds like it might be the latter but I’m just not informed enough

The surest way out of life’s usually unavoidable strictures was money, to somehow get rich and be free from the system. Adults did the football pools; teenagers were busy thinking how they could get their hands on some. The ambition was crystal-clear. As Paul McCartney would recall, though his career path was uncertain he was sure
it involved money. I grew up in Speke, and looking around at my neighbours I saw that the problem was money –this was why they argued, fell apart, why their kids had to go away, money was the central problem. So, though I didn’t know what I wanted to do, I knew it had to involve money, so that if I got married that part would be taken out of the equation. I wanted to remove the evil money problem that was going to wreck the marriage before we started.

OK so i finally got round to watching the new dw episode and i have feelings about it lol.
i thought it was fun and a cool idea and i liked how much it had clearly been made to feel like old dw. Tennant is a very good actor and i think he's an all round good guy so no issues there. and I think the way they explained Donna surviving remembering made sense, her daughter would conceivably have been passed down that knowledge, all is well there. i also think casting yasmin finney was a good choice, she's a fun actor and she's young and she's definitely gonna go on to have a good career if she plays her cards right, all power to her.
my issues comes with the way rose was presented in the episode, she's clearly canonically a young trans woman which i think is an awesome thing for such a massive and influential show like dw to do, but how does the BBC choose to make that absolutely explicitly clear? why let's deadname her almost immediately! how delightful! just in case the mentions of her being different and of Donna wanting to protect her because of it and the casting directors choosing to cast an out trans woman weren't enough (which they were) let's just have her be verbally harassed on the street in one shot to really drive it home. there was no real need for that other than to make clear to the audience that hadn't already realised that rose is trans that she is. it felt uncomfortable to watch and I didn't want to know her dead name, but now I do I guess.
I liked the pronoun discussion, it was a clever way to discuss the doctors pronouns and the idea of asking for someone's pronouns whilst still being true to the plot; these characters know nothing of the biology or sociology of the meeps species, they have no outward markers of gender and so do have to ask. it makes sense that rose (a trans teen) and the doctor (who was completely female presenting just a few episodes ago) would be sensitive to the fact that they need to refer to the meep and don't know how beat to do so. also the fact that the meep is then gendered correctly throughout, even when revealed to be evil, is good and is a fun way of presenting a series topic.
however the 'binary' part didn't make much sense to me and made me cringe. the doctor is comfortable being explicitly called male by Donna yet only half an hour ago was explaining how they use a mixture of pronouns and never stated were fully male. Rose and her family made no mention of her being non-binary, she's only ever referred to as she/her and as a daughter so it seems a little odd to have Donna then be so comfortable referring to her as something neither male nor female. if Rose is non-binary then ok but we haven't been told that and it seems to come from nowhere. as far as I was aware she was a trans woman, and to suddenly refer to her as non-binary or 'something else' felt odd and came across like misgendering.
she's 'finally herself' but what does this statement mean and how does remembering insane amounts of information about the universe make you suddenly sure of your trans identity? idk, that scene kind of ruined the rest of her story for me as it was confusing and just kind of cringey; a forced way to rehash Donna's story as some kind of trans allegory.
in conclusion, the actors are good, trans rep is good. idk why I need to know trans' characters dead names and I don't really want to. and how does Donna magically know her daughter is non-binary or why does she think telling the doctor is an ok thing to do before idk, talking to her daughter in private???

update on how my family’s managing after DotD
“tell them we’re devastated” HAHA
no joke christmas was ruined- felt the evil energy of the bbc merlin writers ten years ago, running through my veins, as I clicked on part 2 on prime video ;)
they soldiered through the first part like champs, only small comments on Arthur’s round table speech they wondered how Elyan’s seat had been replaced and immediately clocked Eira as a traitor bc ‘that’s something the show always does 🙄’
sisters were crying when Merlin was stuck in the crystal cave, and I was crying when he walked up the landslide of rocks after Balinor and disappeared into a halo of white light..
then the second episode started and I was
s h a k i n g
(still hearing the words ‘just really sad’ and ‘I can’t believe it’ and ‘she tricked us 😦’ in the living room as I type this up, and it’s been way more than 24 hours later…)
Gwen was so badass! 🥰 and Merlin was out there winning! And I remembered why this was so terrible the first time, the show works hard to give us this false sense of security.
I clicked on the episode knowing that within 5 minutes Arthur would be stabbed and I’d be able to retire from my long career as a loving older sister.
It was literally a ‘gasps hears around the world’ kinda moment, they all sat up and then, my second youngest sister the Mordred stan (she dressed up as him for our s2 finale costume contest) burst into tears! and I actually felt really bad.
But then the magic reveal!
It was deadly quiet when Merlin revealed his magic and there were a few long sighs when Arthur turned away to say ‘leave me’. I was pretty much inconsolable and this is my third rewatch personally. They did! make the connection between Merlin’s ‘fire dragon’ from ‘Moment of Truth’ and the one from this ep however :)
Then we had the long haul of waiting for the beginning of the real end really, and I was relieved to hear them giggle when Arthur and Merlin reminiscenced about their first market place fight, and Merlin’s ‘charm’.
then… The Real End
Of course my little brother (if you remember him from his story ‘Morgana’s Weak Quickening) had to gloat about how Merlin had ended her, just as he’d predicted, and everyone was shushing and glaring at him because it wasn’t the time lmao
I was already crying for real by the time Merlin had Arthur in his arms and they were exchanging their last words, and I was surprised to find later that they did! hear Arthur say ‘just hold me… please’ because I hadn’t heard it on my first watch.
There were no gasps or shouts when Arthur died, just silence…
No one jumped when the truck came on scene as a jumpscare (I was kind of mad at myself for getting startled even though I knew!), and then Merlin crossed our tv screen for the last time and I let the end credits play in full.
They shushed me after I attempted to speak in the two minutes after the credits ended, and it was so quiet for the next ten minutes I thought I broke them…
Their reactions:
Sister 1: ‘Wh-hat..?’
Sister 2: ‘HE DIDN’T DESERVE TO DIE’ (Mordred😵‍💫)
Sister 3: ‘But Gaius didn’t die?? I didn’t put ‘Arthur dies’ on my theory list…’
Brother: ‘I TOLD YOU SO. But… now I’m a little sad :(‘
Afterwards, I promised I’d let them all loose to look up any ‘spoilers’ for the show they wanted. (We have an unofficial rule that whenever we’re watching anything for the time, we can’t look up anything related for fear of spoilers. And I’m a very strict drill sergeant about this 🫡)
But they weren’t very interested…
Our Christmas morning was noticeably sadder. And I wondered again how families in 2012 had coped when their kids had struggled through the unfairness of the finale and still had to open presents the next morning… a mystery really…
They spent the whole. day. watching edits and playing sad music in the living room (to which my parents were very confused) and coming up to me to either rant or fight about the finale haha
Now my sister (the piano playing one) is learning how to play ‘Solas’ by Jamie Duffy on the piano bc she says it reminds her of Diamond of the day and she’s been very determined! All break, she’s been getting up to play ‘Solas’ and ‘Bond of Sacrifice’ and ‘The Love Theme’ and I’m proud of her, for getting this far and only a little concerned
- I think the kids are gonna be alright? lmao
They’ve made plans for fanart and fanfics and alternative endings and I think I’ve fully recruited them into the immoral fandom (if not happily) although I’m sure they’ll recover soon enough to join us in bittersweet reminiscence next year :)
oh! forgot to add one last thing
after rewatching ‘A Dragon’s Call’ last night my brother had one thing to say. “Arthur says ‘there’s something about you Merlin’ …but that something was that he would die in Merlin’s arms…” LMAO I almost died on the spot but I’m glad to see they’ve inherited the fandom’s morbid (or Mordred ;) sense of humor

You watched the BBC Hamlet! What'd you think?
Of course I thought it was magnificent — how could it not be with that cast? I knew Lalla had played Ophelia but didn't realize she'd been opposite Derek Jacobi (and they're both coming to Gally)! Plus I'm a massive Patrick Stewart fan since TNG was "my" Star Trek.
On top of a great cast with Shakespeare at his very best — and I think it's only the second time i've watched Hamlet, although of course I read it in school — I had forgotten just how many Shakespeare quotes are in Dorothy Sayers. Clearly I need to go through both again now that I'm older and pretty well able to follow Elizabethan without a glossary.
But first, I'm binging I, Claudivs. I last saw it when it was on TV, and I was much too young. I'm trying to soak up as much Derek Jacobi as possible before the con. I shelled out the extra bucks to go to his script reading.
I need to make sure I watch his actual Doctor Who episodes! I'm still catching up on the 10th and 11th Doctor. I've only listened to his War Master Killing Time set which included his being delightfully evil to Nyssa and Jo (Big Finish had better tie off those loose threads, aigh!) I was so, so proud of Sarah being able to hold her own with an actor of his caliber in a two-hander, although I know better than to ask him about it. (First because it was barely a footnote in his career, and second because coming in to read a script you don't have to memorize may be a pleasant day's work, but not very memorable, so actors usually can't answer fan questions about their audios.)

Just watching CAREER OF EVIL again. Robin really starts showing her stupidity and immaturity in this series.
She's just been made partner in a job that she supposedly loves and wants. AND they've been sent a severed leg in the post. But clever Robin DELETES messages from the senior partner and decides to ignore him. As you do ‼️ She is so smart.
And consistently ignores warnings and guidance from a partner with a lot more experience than her. Luckily it's fiction, so the author can make it work out for her, without damage.

Do Revenge feels kind of racist towards drea and i dont like it
(I'm black and white but i rasied Cuban so if i step out bounds i apologize however black and latina women like brown skined women both face devasting conquesnes from racist perspectives in way so latina women tell me if out of bonds here however my analysis is more just fundamental understanding the risks and fetishization that extend and end within black and latina experience )
The White Femmine Hyper Femmine Dangerous Woman Movie Perspective Relationship to Women of Color Characters
First off I think Mean Girls, Jawbreaker, and Heathers are fantastic pecies on white femmine lesbian hyper femmine violence and internal grief. But they lack the amount of work woc have to do when entering white spaces hence it is essential that you write with intersectionality in mind. This did not happen here
Privilege, Power Dynamic and its Compilations with Applying Intersectionality
The main problem here is the power imbalance and privilege Drea and Eleanor have. A good homosexual anger revenge movie and text requires a ability for the characters to hurt each other but fundamentally understand at some point we both have to know the other is there own person even if its in a fucked up way
Heres a good example
The Hannigram Strat
Hannibal BBC is a perfect example because even tho like all the mess is involved Hannibal has to be forgiven by Will in order for there relationship continue now this also works because they are both incredibly smart in ways that are needed for there relationship hannibal always admire will as someone whos intelligent he doesn't dumb him down or think lesser because of his neurodivergency and eventually will kills that dude as a were even symbol but ultimately both men are grown and dont need to further purse to college they have lives and ways to make money and careers
This is what I'm calling the Hannigram Strat in which both partners come to understanding or arleady understand that theyre both on the same danger level and they are equals
Hand in Unlovable Hand
So this one is you have done or are capable of the same level of fucked up behavior therefore the risk of ditching is harder to do and when it's done its betrayal its sacrifice but its not something you can outright refer to as just abusive so if your raised in similarly dark environment your evil is based on a similar understanding of intensity. Which is determined and influenced by the factors of identity below
Intersectional Identiy Factors and Privilege
Drea: Latina, Cannot pass as white, lower class than her peers, also exists in space outside of white lesbian gender identity issues via her latina identity, also not someone who wants to presents masc and present as she wants
So already Drea dealing with being a racial minority in white school specficaly latina which means she has to code switch, work harder, and she can't risk being as messy as everyone else because she like scholarship or somehow more likely to get expelled via her economic standing she a visibly a brown skinned Latina so she isn't allowed to express her feelings of anger as that could be percieved as violent
Now I'm gonna talk about Drea the way i see her behaviors and such
Pre Sex Tape Drea
•The only technically out of blue mean girl behavior she does is say that eleanor was predatory towards her now this is like technically because he internalized homophobia and shame so as much eleanor sees it that way I'm not gonna count it that way in this secton
•She generally self centered and shes mean in her language
•One girl shames Drea for having Tara paying for her party and says she got her dress at(salvation amry)to which Drea says that this girl is going yo donate her clothes to said store this an unessarily intense response to the girls comment but not unprompted
Post Sex Tape Drea
•First of she gets Sophia Turner whom she thought released the sex tape in mental hospital and claims shes did cocaine which is extreme reaction but were in genre of revenge fantasy so its extreme but a response to a action that hurt her it's not unprompted
▪︎Drea thinks that it was Clarissa whomst outed Eleanor and puts her in the mentall health hospital area
•She gets the seinor class high on mushrooms without there consent
•She releases all of texts of Max flirting and cheating exbortant amount of girls in school this us technically violating him but it also hurts the girls who were also involved with max
•She pressures Eleanor to look femmeine in order to get her revange technically the thought process is we are helping each other you have to play a part but its also something i have to do where i have adjust myself in order to to survive in the world so this is same thing I'm asking you to do
•She then discovers that Eleanor has been manipulating her and even made the fake rejection letter
•She discovers this info and goes to confront miss eleanor who then foroces her to do this with this plan of sabotaging the popular people at the ivy party and threatens her (mom)
•Outs Eleanor's Relationship mess to ethan and the popular girls and ethan
Eleanor Analysis
Eleanor: white woman, lesbian, masc presenting, is good on money
Now i do feel if t Drea was white and actually vindictive and like wasn't more so an aloof cher from cluess self centered this could a really fun secret garden Mary lennox moment however this is not the case so lets talk about her how her identities give and loose her privilege
•Ok so being queer is difficult in heteronormative world and being called predatory and shamed for being who are when young is really hard so i think we can count that so she is oppressed for being a lesbian, and having to do the thinking of can i share myself and will i get hurt if i do this and i am discounting part of this purely because Drea is in denial of her own identity and isn't a vindictive straight person literally just being homophobic
• I will give Eleanor that the emotional and mental aftermath on her psyche is fucked up because it
Eleanor doesn't receive any sexism except from like max and she has no economic problems
•Drea does make her look femme but this isnt because she disrespects Eleanor masculine presenting self its because she already used to having to shed herself like a chameleon but its still self centered in the way she presents it
She forces Drea a Latina woman to play into the drug part of her revenge plan and she holds no thought of this could hurt her more as Latina women who could actually be in trouble for this and maybe go to jail
Conclusion or why this isn't quite as fabulous a story as its Pre Cursors
We have Eleanor who has nothing to lose who decides to do revenge against Drea who not only has everything to loose and isn't even plotting lady macbeth style pre the sex tape and is just not aware shes selfcentered who shows genuine empathy and devotion to Eleanor one she hears about this even tho shes dissociated her memory of it
And eleanor inability to deal with her valid anger towards drea because of Drea rumor of predatory behavior that is turned into i know i have more privilege and can't commicate but I'm gonna ruin your life not giving you rhe full honest truth and leaving you vulnerable to way harsh consequences to behavior I could get way with without sacrificing my life
This does not share that you any balance that the battle of power in mean girls and jawbreaker have
On the one hand it makes sense that Eleanor would just be like I'm mad that this girl did this to me but also like she literally was uspet for eleanor and showed empathy and especially because that was after the sex tape release she didn't have anything to loose by denying it its like what i would called the mary Lennox white girl complex (she thinks she a orphan girl in Victorian gothic story)
Dreas not a angel to do all of that but the anger and pressure and stress she feels because her initial oppressed position is what really makes her loose it shes feeling valid emotion and is honest just like teenager and she makes sure to this in way that she thinks in long term the white people will get over right
So Drea perspective is the more modern heathers and jawbreaker poc girl hyperfemmine revenge fantasy
then the interjection of Eleanor almost feels like out of place, Drea no regina george and she even as Eleanor states is better person and it takes this story which already has to characters who have such fundamental difference in privilege and if anything I would agrue its violation of Drea to make her go with the plan against her will because she is has more to loose and as woc it made so upset and felt like distrusting
So in the context of my gay revenge darkness duo rules because drea doesn't have the same ability to fight back at her because long term her goal is to have good standing in the world to survive Eleanors revenge plan fallls short against dreas cher cluesss esc actions that she would probably be willing to rectify(eleanor doesn't know this initially but the writers do hence my problem)
I also think the more intersting relationship between evil and regret crazieness is between drea and tara who have a more equal and related footing to what they could loose
One thing that important here is that Drea feels the white girls have it easeir they will recover faster and she has some anger from the privilege they already receive
I feel here is conflict in text and argument between the legitimate anger of Drea as latina lowerclass girl and the text refusal to allow her to be angry and get something out of it she doesn't get to win
I'm deeply umcomfortable with the lack room for the dreas unlikable character traits and the way she so deeply punished in way that regina George and courtney from jawbreaker are not which is worse because her initial highschool school motivations of setting herself for economic and career success aren't evil plan esc and her calling eleanor predatory, which in comparison to literally dealing with deadbody courtney, and aggressively on purpose keeping the status quo regina geroge (i know shes lesbian coded but she consistantly einforces her power) is just simply racism
Shes not nice and shes bitchy but again she has no agenda other than her own success she selfcentered as well but at this point her goal is get out of her school and move on she wants to have sucessful and happy life
Now ultimately Eleanor has the resources to get help and deal with her problems easily accessible she doesn't need to pick up her mom at her work and she doesn't depend college to be the entrance to really live life it's not the same need and as much traumatizes eleanor this will noy follow her into adulthood as strongly as a DRUG CHARE would follow Drea. Drea never gets to fight back or get a say in this world that refuses to let her be woman because shes seen as less human and fiesity and spicy in a almost animal like way(i dont go here so Latina who face this stereotype in that way and not in black way feel free to correct me)
Passing is great example of text in which to queer (subtextual) black women balance anger confusion and affection towards one another in what is deeply terrifying world for them in which in ends in devastation but both women have similar choice and whats more devasting is way they forced to shape themselves
What you notice about the texts I've mentioned (excluding clueless) is that theses dynamics are characters of the same race
So its hard at least for me to enjoy the eleanor twist when she not only is more privileged but literally could've communicated her needs she has everything she needs and Drea needs yale more baldy
So conclusion Do revenge could've been fantastic movie if had Drea Poc revenge fantasy playing on the 80s and 90s movie's but the interjection of white woman privilege ruined it

A HAUNTING IN VENICE (2023)

Screenplay by Michael Green.
Directed by Kenneth Branagh.
Distributed by 20th Century Studios. 103 minutes. Rated PG.
A Haunting in Venice is the third time in which Kenneth Branagh directed a version of an Agatha Christie mystery novel and portrayed her legendary Belgian sleuth, the brilliant-but-eccentric Hercule Poirot.
Of course taking on Christie’s body of work could be a long career path. The prolific writer penned about 70 mystery novels – with over 30 of them featuring Poirot – so there is a whole lot of material to take on. The first two Branagh made were slightly unadventurous – two of the better-known Poirot adventures, Murder on the Orient Express and Death in the Nile, both of which have been filmed multiple times. In fact, the last big cinematic Poirot series in the 1970s also did those two novels, in that same order. (The third film of that earlier series was Evil Under the Sun.) Both of those books were also remade for the popular BBC series Poirot.
So it’s kind of a nice surprise that this one is based on one of the lesser-known of Christie’s novels – the 1969 book Hallowe’en Party. In fact the title was so obscure that Branagh felt comfortable totally renaming the story – intellectual property be damned. Actually, in full disclosure, it’s been decades since I’ve read Hallowe’en Party and I have almost no memory of the story, but from a conversation at the screening with someone who remembered the book, this film is very different from the novel.
What do you know? A Haunting in Venice may be the best of the Branagh adaptations of Christie’s work so far. This is because Branagh has mixed a certain number of horrific moments in with the classic drawing room mystery tableau, and it turns out to be a terrific fit.
A Haunting in Venice is not a horror film, per se, but it has enough jump scares, gloomy atmospherics and mysterious things that go bump in the night that it juices the more staid, traditional mystery aspects of the story.
The movie starts with Poirot living in Venice, Italy, having retired from detecting. He even has a bodyguard to fight off the many people constantly bugging him to take on their cases. He is finally prodded out of his cocoon of inactivity by an old American friend who visits – Ariadne Oliver (played by Tina Fey) another character who often appeared in Christie’s fiction, in fact she as a female mystery novelist Ariadne is sort of a stand-in for Christie in her own fiction.
Ariadne is determined to get Poirot to return to his work. Specifically, she invites him to join her at a Halloween party at a local haunted castle, which is owned by a famous opera singer (Kelly Reilly). After the party, there will be a séance trying to connect with the singer’s daughter, who mysteriously seemed to kill herself not long before. A famous medium (Michelle Yeoh) is running the séance, and Ariadne is certain that she is a charlatan, so she asks Poirot to see if he can prove her to be a fake.
Soon the group is in the middle of a haunting, with sounds going bump in the night, odd apparitions showing up in the darkness of the dank abode and bodies starting to pile up. There is only a limited number of potential suspects locked in the mansion, and Poirot must find the killer before he (or she) strikes again.
The mystery itself is old-fashioned and twisty, but the haunting aspects make the story even more intriguing. It’s a smart and simple way of making the slightly creaky story beats resonate more strongly.
And the footage of ancient Venice, even the huge, haunted hall they visit, is simply stunningly beautiful.
All in all, A Haunting in Venice is a smart and fun take on a sometimes-dated filmmaking style. Good for them. Over a century after Agatha Christie’s first novel was published, there’s still life in these old books.

Anthony Head talks openly about his remarkable career and generous work for charity...
Tumblr media
As one of the most iconic actors ever to emerge from England, Anthony Head really is the definition of a true great. Comedy, drama, live theatre – Head has done it all, bringing his classic style of acting to each and every role. Best known as Rupert Giles in the Joss Whedon vampire classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Head has since diversified into other areas of acting. In recent years, he's guest starred in Doctor Who, found success as the Prime Minister in Little Britain, and at present is portraying Uther in the BBC's smash hit Merlin.
In this intimate interview with Shadowlocked – conducted at the Merlin: The Dragon Tower launch day at Warwick Castle – Anthony Head talks openly about his life, filming with Merlin and his career to date...
Well, while we are here (Merlin launch day), let’s start with this. How’s it all been going?
It’s been going great; very grateful for the production to let me potter over to the other side of the pond; they moved filming dates for me which was great. It’s looking gorgeous, they're now shooting it on a 35 million budget.
Well I think it deserves it considering its success...
Well yes, but these days everything’s shot on digital, thus cutting costs, but I think it loses so much from filming and from acting in general. But yes, I suppose it shows the BBC are 100% behind it, which they should be really. It’s in 183 territories (countries) so it deserves a budget complimentary of this achievement.
They’ve just finished season three in America and, from the viewing figures, they just can’t seem to get enough. On that note, have you been surprised by its success?
Erm, I’m always surprised...you always hope, but you just don’t know. From the very start, it had a good vibe about it, but even when I was offered the part I was concerned that it may limit itself to a young audience only; but the fact that it’s got such a wide demographic has really saved it. In fact, it was with NBC for the first year, and they said – on a number of occasions – that they were genuinely surprised by the numbers it got, especially considering it got little to no advertising or promotion, but it didn’t attract the demographic they were actually hoping for.
Well, duh...it got an older demographic instead of a younger one due to the fact that they showed it in the middle of the summer. Thankfully, Syfy saw the potential and picked it up, and they pitched it just right. It’s – well – one of those shows that has a genuine interest across all spectrums of society; it’s a show that the whole family can watch, with all members getting an honest level of enjoyment from it. A show like that is rare these days.
So many parents sit down and watch shows with their children that they have no interest in – to keep them happy – but there are very few shows that everyone can get into.
Marcus: My twin girls are big fans of the series, and when they started watching it so did their mother and I. I totally agree with what you’re saying, it’s like Doctor Who, you can grow up and watch it, regardless of your age. I think it’s very similar to Buffy really...
Well, it’s not the same writing as Buffy, but it’s got the same vibe. It’s humorous, but at the same time it’s capable of both its dark and somewhat surreal moments...
Marcus: Yes, I know – you are very scary sometimes.
Good – *evil smirk* – I’m glad to hear it...means I’m doing things right haha.
Marcus: You play a great Uther, and it’s a tricky character isn’t it? If you looked at Thomas Mannerie’s Uther, and how he gets off on countless maidens, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot more does there?
Yes, traditionally there is not much about the character Uther, other than the fact that he was a bit of a wino and liked to party. Oh, and he may have been partial to the odd woman or two.
And I’m sure, like any good actor, you researched this in depth for the role?
Haha, oh yes, to play a role well you must experience it for yourself. In all seriousness though, there is not a whole lot to research. I went to see a couple of other actors playing kings, but other than that the research element was fairly limited. For me, assessing the character of Uther, the most important aspect of the role was to make sure I understood his mythology and where he was coming from.
But that’s the point – it was the middle of the dark ages, and he was forever wrestling with his kingdom, holding onto it as best he could; with berserkers on every border. Basically though, he is an old fashioned father, and he’s just holding it together as best he can; whilst in the knowledge that Arthur is going to kick against everything that Uther stood for, and I think that’s what makes it interesting. The fact that he gets it wrong almost everytime – he wasn’t wrong about Mordred though – well that’s just a shame...
I can’t believe it’s been seven years since Buffy left our screens, but I love how you have diversified since. We all know about Little Britain, both a commercial and critical success, but I remember one you did way back...Sold. Unfortunately, that never kicked off – any ideas why?
To be honest, I remember thinking, from my very first read-through and onwards – can they hinge a whole series around estate agents? Well, they did, but that whole concept of them having a fantasy world was, well, a little bit thin...but there you go. I reckon with different circumstances, it could have been great.
Finally, I have to ask. I follow you on Twitter and I couldn’t help but notice a while ago that someone paid just short of £2000 for a 20 minute phone call with yourself...
And, the person who came in second – offering to pay around £1670 – was so eager, we have agreed to do a separate 10 minute conversation with her. It now means that £3670 has been raised for the Mental Health Foundation, so I’m just glad I could help do my bit to raise awareness and support their cause.
So, not to put any pressure on you, but what are you going to talk about? £2000 for 20 mins equates to £200 a minute, and I’m sure you will want to give them their money's worth...
You know, I’ve done it a number of times before, and after the old “wow” “argh” from them, it just kind of runs through. You know me, I could talk for England! It’s actually quite nice, and it’s for a good cause – so everybody wins, right?
Special thanks to Shadowlocked writer Marcus Pullen for his help in conducting this interview.
