Sung to the tune of “The Boxer” by Simon & Garfunkel
I am just an orphan And my story’s often told, I have gambled my existence On Alaundo's mumbo-jumbo, Such are prophecies. All lies at best, Still, a man hears what he wants to hear And disregards the rest.
When I fled my home In Candlekeep...

need to put together a properly thought out post about it tomorrow, but if arlis stays in the city after the main game's events have wrapped up she's actually fairly miserable. after the initial surprise of suddenly having everything that she's never had (power, stability, at least some shred of wealth), she realizes it comes at the cost of her needing to pretend to someone she just isn't. she isn't a hero (at least, in the way people want heroes to be), she isn't even a baldurian, and needing to constantly compose herself to reflect the city's virtues and expectations exhausts her.
while she hardly misses the horrors(tm), arlis misses her friends and the proximity of them. she's now surrounded by people she doesn't know who have been playing a game she's unfamiliar with for a long time. she has influence but no idea how to wield it properly.
she's tired and lonely and sooner than later makes the decision to fade back into obscurity.

He had been not but a lingering figure in the absence of light. Letting the shadows shallow his form whole. Silently he had watched the far smaller woman sneak about the makeshift camp he had put together. A handful of supplies had fallen captive to her sticky figures. It's only when she reaches for something of greater value, wrapped tight in a dark cloth, does he shatter his silence.

@beregosts: " none of us are safe. but i think you know that better than any of us, don't you?
It’s a wretched exceptionalism, she thinks. Standing out to others for not only being the runt of her litter, but because her family wanted her to never know the meaning of peace. Not not, or ever.
Tumblr media
“I suppose so,” she murmurs with a quiet timbre, amber eyes summiting upwards. These hands have performed this task hundreds of times before – memorized all the details required – and it does not need her full focus any longer. A strand of sinew wrapped about ring and middle finger to keep tension as Salome pulls tight against fletch and frame of an arrow. The other end wedged haphazardly between patchwork scar knees. “But I try t’not think about what would happen t’me if my safety net fails me. I’d rather be dead, t’be honest.”

❛ i’ve had a clever thought. if your mind is absent of one, you should perhaps follow mine. ❜ | @beregosts
❛ And? Will you share this thought of yours, or must I stand here guessing until our bones are dust? ❜ if Arlis seeks to wound, she'd be better off seeking a target her daggers will not shatter against. Neither the blade nor the hand wielding it know the taste of their own blood.
Finding an open section of wall to lean against, Lark yawns, making no effort of hiding her continuing boredom. ❛ I've no interest in trading barbs. Orin's hunters have marked you, not me. ❜ The full weight of her attention settles upon Arlis, a mantle of darkness made no less heavy by the noon sun. ❛ Whether you accept my help in finding her or not won't change my fate. ❜

...starting to dawn on me why the Chosen decided to utilise an army of mind control squids for world domination. Tadpoles, erasure of identity, and hive minds are fast and efficient, as these things go.
The job of the High Primate is managing the entire Bhaalist church in a region (in the case of the region around Baldur's Gate that should be the Western Heartlands) and trying to bring these regions under Bhaalist control. Bhaal having been out of commission for a good century (and the Gate being the only place known to have a temple), there's a lot of room for growth. Like, you're starting basically from scratch with the world's least useful sycophantic butler, a brainwashed half-brother, maybe a decrepit ex-priest or two at risk of keeling over from old age, and your niece (who hates you), and any overly excited serial killers you can find who are up for a new religion.
You'd be looking at pinning down Baldur's Gate first (that'll take at least a few years). Maybe using the Brethren of the Keen Strike to start spreading influence amongst the smaller, less important settlements and locations in the immediate region like Beregost (and Candlekeep maybe?)
But you're going to want to seize influence in Elturgard (Torm is their favourite god; good luck with that) and Najara (infiltrating a yuan-ti cult with another cult: good luck with that.). You might also be attempting to manipulate the elves of Evereska (they won't like that very much either).
And that's an insane amount of work. Except it's actually worse! Because Bhaal's instructions weren't just "I'm putting you in charge of my church in this region and want this area brought to heel."
Bhaal: I am making you my Chosen and High Primate, my prophet, the leader of my reborn faith, and my avatar upon this world.
Durge: So you want me to bring the entire Western Heartlands under your influence?
Bhaal: No.
Bhaal: The Entire World.
Durge, screaming internally: And how soon do you want this accomplished, Father?
Bhaal: Quickly.
Gortash probably has a similar job, but as a Banite I suppose world domination schemes are a hobby of his. I wonder how many schemes they went through before they decided on mind flayer empire, and who had the idea?
On the bright side, once you'd finished expanding your power far enough and have multiple temples and can start appointing individual Primates and Primistresses to manage them, you can make Orin Primistress of Baldur's Gate and she can kick you out of her room and maybe hate you a little less. (Well, no, but it might make things a little calmer while she plots against you? Or she'll shank you for presuming to "give her" the temple she sees as hers already.) Clergy usually live in the temples, and Bhaal's temples are described as fortresses that house the assassins: I think Orin lives in the temple too. Pretty sure she was born there. From her perspective you are very much freeloading in her house.

Introducing my Tav OC Raina! She's in a fic I haven't posted yet but I think she's pretty neat.
Bit about her before I start the prompt:
she's an elf
an arcane trickster
she's young for an elf (like maybe 70? Haven't nailed that down yet)
Now the prompt! (linked here)
Baby
Parents: mum's a courtesan in Beregost and her dad she's never met. She knows he's a semi-famous wyvern hunter though.
Birth: She was unplanned and her mum was pretty bitter raising her solo. She was named Raina because of her mother's fondness of the rain. Haven't worked out a birth date yet.
First word: Fuck :) (thank the kitchen staff at Feldepost's)
When they first walked: In the back kitchens of Feldepost's Inn. The cooking staff would take turns minding her. They were like family to her.
Tantrum: When she was 2 one of the cooks gave her her own little ale mug for drinking water. It had a dented corner and was her favourite thing in the world. She named it Aloun, mistakening her mother's Elvish lessons as the cup's name. Any time someone else used Aloun, Raina would throw a fit. She was very possessive of that ale mug and even took it with her when she left home.
First sickness: She was almost never sick, though when she was about seven she had a really nasty fever. Her mum dropped her clients and stayed with her at all hours till she was better. It took a few days for the illness to pass. It was the only time Raina remembers her mother being worried.
Thunderstorm: Raina has fond memories of storms. The harder the better. During bad storms the courtesans would call it a night since no one wanted to go out in the bad weather, so they'd all pitch in for mulled wine and sit beneath the veranda watching the storm together. The other courtesans were very much her aunts and uncles despite no blood relation. Sometimes they'd sneak her a sip of wine and her mum would pretend not to notice.
Some of these are more childhood than baby but oh well! It's where the prompt ended up.

This is Haseley. He’s a Gloom Stalker Ranger/College of Swords Bard. He hails from Beregost, but he hasn’t been there in about 20 years, instead hunting and trading across the Faerûnian Heartlands.
He can be a bit dour, but a good mug of ale and a warm fire to sit at, and he’ll regale you with a story or a song if the mood strikes him.
Tumblr media
I think he would get along with Xyrra! She is pretty laid back but they have similar lifestyles. She is a lythari (tldr; a werewolf elf) and has been traveling for several years now. She is a big fan of hunting and being on the open road and under the stars. She doesn’t demand a lot from the people around her and would be more than happy to just relax by the campfire and listen to what he has to share.

list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern (tagged by @sunriseverse on main, tyty! 💛)
...i've only got 9 posted fics so we're gonna have to make do lol. talk about inspiration to get off my arse and finish some of my wips >.>
1. how to deflower your martial brother (wo jia dashixiong naozi you keng, dongfang wuqiong/gong changsheng) Gong Changsheng had noticed this when he was younger, the way Dongfang Wuqiong would sometimes press a hand to his chest as though in pain, the recurring cough he’d shrug off as a minor seasonal affliction. 2. what's in a name? (mysterious lotus casebook, di feisheng & fang duobing) He didn’t mean to keep it, but something about the helpless little bundle of cream-coloured fur had stirred his heart. 3. no takebacks (mysterious lotus casebook, fang duobing/li lianhua) Li Lianhua is teasing him about his supposed upcoming marriage to the princess again, in that way he does sometimes that’s more of a defensive mechanism than anything. 4. to gravity and the unknown (elder scrolls online, verandis ravenwatch/prince naemon) It’s cold. 5. you and me and a bottle of wine (baldur's gate 1, player character/xan) Beregost is a welcome sight after weeks of trudging up and down the Sword Coast at the mercy of the elements, the wildlife both mundane and monstrous, and the seemingly endless roving gangs of bandits. 6. hold me tight and fear me not (baldur's gate 2, player character/xan) The dark elves are not much for merrymaking, Ceru thinks as she sips at her second tankard of black mead; in all her travels, she’s never seen a tavern so quiet. 7. snow and repetitions of snow (elder scrolls online, mannimarco/vanus galerion) Vanus Galerion sank into his bathtub wearily, the troubles of the day weighing heavily upon him. 8. a light that does not flicker (elder scrolls iv: oblivion, hero of kvatch/martin septim)
Nevos could only watch, mute and uncomprehending, as Martin was enveloped in a blaze of light so bright it hurt his eyes to watch.
9. into the abyss (elder scrolls iv: oblivion, hero of kvatch/martin septim) Blue, all around him is blue, a placid calm sky that stretches on in all directions as far as he can see. taking "first line" as the first full sentence, which... lol. if there's any consistency in these it's that i am very inconsistent! past tense, present tense, rambling run-on sentences or just "it's cold"? no pattern no rhyme no reason baby!!!
tagging! @shararan @strandedchesspiece uhh i think i've seen this one around a bit, i'm not sure who else has done it! any writer friends who are interested pls feel free to do the thing and @ me about it 💛

The Chains that Bind Us
Chapter 3
Tav bit her thumb. She surveyed the items in her pack, hoping that it would last her the 20 day trek down to Athkala. They'd have to stop at an inn and then again to restock at Beregost. She was deep in thought when her the room door slammed open.
"Tav." Jaheira nudged a young blonde girl into the room.
"Hells, Jaheira. Have you ever heard of knocking?"
"You left the door ajar." Jaheira explained, unapologetically. "You remember my daughter? Fig will be joining you to Athkala."
"It is not exactly a holiday, Jaheira."
"Exactly. That's why you're taking her. She needs some field experience. She's a good fighter. You need good fighters." She pointed a finger at Tav. "I know why you asked me to come, but I am too old to be going on adventures with you, and quite frankly I need some peace and quiet around the house."
Tav stared at Jaheira blankly, knowing better than to argue. "All right, Jaheira."
Jaheira smiled, triumphantly. She turned to Fig. "You would do well to listen to her. Don't disappoint me." She prodded a finger at Fig's chest.
Fig rolled her eyes. "Mum...."
"No objections." Jaheira wagged a finger at her daughter.
"You do know Astarion is coming."
"And Minsc... But, yes. It worries me somewhat that the vampire lord will be on this journey. I know you and Minsch will watch out for her. Plus, Astarion and I have come to an understanding. He doesn't toe too far out of line, and I don't bombard his palace with flaming arrows. He knows better than to harm my kin." Jaheira winked.
Tav smiled. Good old Jaheira. "Did you bring your supplies, Fig?"
Fig sheepishy looked up at Tav. "Yes."
"You can leave them in my room. We leave at first light tomorrow. You and Minsc can meet me here?"
Fig nodded, excitedly, "Yes, aunt Tav. They're just downstairs, I'll go get them." She fled out the room.
"She's grown." Tav said quietly. "I haven't seen her since she was hitting that dummy as a child."
"She still hits that dummy. All day. All night." Jaheira sighed, showing the lines of her age across her face. "You know I would come with you, cub. Even just to keep Fig out of trouble--"
"You don't have to explain to me, Jaheira." Tav placed a hand on her shoulder. "I'll watch over her, and I'll make sure Astarion behaves."
"I knew I could count on you, cub." She pulled Tav into a tight embrace. "It is so good to see you. When you disappeared, I was worried."
"I know. I'm sorry I never wrote."
Jaheira shook her head. "You're just picking up bad habits from an old woman."
A stomping noise came running up the stairs. Fig returned with her pack, panting. Jaheira and Fig said their goodbyes to Tav. Tav watched from her window as the pair meandered down the street toward their home. Fig skipped and cartwheeled as Jaheira gestured wildly in an attempt to control her energetic teenager from running into other people. As they turned the corner, now out of sight, Tav watched the sun set over the rooftops of Baldur's Gate.
Tomorrow. She thought. She sank into a lounging chair and saw the last bit of light slip away from the city. She watched as the flicker of candles began to shine in the windows. She stared at the old Szarr palace in the distance. She was lost in thought. Gale. Astarion. The Crown of Karsus. She was determined not to let it happen again. Never again. Her eye lids grew heavy as her body sank further into her chair.
Tomorrow is a new day.

You know, I understand that The Dark Urge, as a character, was in part meant to call back to the earlier games.
But as my young heroine stands bleary eyed in a pub in Nashkel, surrounded by her childhood friend, plus four other people who would not stop complaining until we stopped exploring Beregost and came to poke around this bloody mining town ... I have to say ....
There is a significant difference between "Hey, Auntie Jaheira, I had a weird dream and now I've got this nifty healing spell" and "Hey ... total strangers I have just joined up with, I appreciate that we're all staring down at the mangled corpse of a really nice bard we just met ... and I'm covered with blood ... but I genuinely have no clear memory of how this happened. Although it was probably me that did the mangling".
These are not commensurate experiences. At all. Bhaal is going to need to up his game a bit here, because one nightmare for one really useful spell is not sounding like a bad deal.

Wolf my brain is made of soup so I keep going through a remember-forget-remember cycle trying to remember I wanted to send you some questions off that Tav ask meme from a few days back so while I remember, at your leisure, for ya boy Nowhere:
2. Does your Tav have any siblings? Are they close?
5. Is your Tav religious? Were they raised that way?
9. What did they do for work/to get by?
10. Was your Tav in a relationship? How did it end?
2. Nowhere was an only child! He might've been close to them if he had siblings, his parents were rather distant, and made little attempt to have him bond to his cousins, he was sort of a latchkey kid, allowed to wander about as long as he stayed out of trouble.
5. Nowhere's father was a ranger that worshipped Silvanus and wanted Nowhere too, but Nowhere never really felt... a connection to any of the gods. He tried! Because of the Forgotten Realms fucked up death lore. But he never really felt like any of the Gods fit him, though he'll occasionally toss a prayer to Tymora. After the game though, he definitely prays to Jergal, though he'd probably joke that wouldn't change where he was ending up. Just uh, not where Astarion could hear him.
9. Nowhere was a courier! He worked out of Beregost, but after Elturiel fell, he started feeling the pressure of being a tiefling, and decided to return to Baldur's Gate, along with one other reason...
10. Which was Nowhere hadn't exactly recently ended a relationship, but he had been in something of an open relationship with a couple. Things had changed, and it was pretty amicable, but it did make things awkward because a lot of places Nowhere had gone, they still went and he'd already wanted space, so the growing resentment against Tieflings on the Sword Coast was just another motive to head back to The Gate.

Glitter's Baldur's Gate 1 Modlist
Here's just some mods that I use/like.
Quests BS Balduran's Seatower: Balduran's Seatower is a quest mod for BG:EE, BGT, and EET that adds a new area to the city of Baldur's Gate, accessible via the south-west corner of the Docks District.
Gorgon's Eye: The Gorgon's Eye is a content mod for BG:EE and EET that adds an underground thieves den into the town of Beregost. It contains new quests, characters, stores and items. After enlisting in the Gorgon's Eye, you'll find yourself undertaking tasks that align with the operations of a typical thieves guild. You'll be expected to engage in activities such as theft, extortion, smuggling, bounty hunting, and assassination. However, it's worth noting that there are some satisfying options for good and neutral-aligned players. If at any point you find the guild's ways aren't to your liking, you have the option to switch allegiances and aid the City Watch in a raid against the Gorgon's Eye.
Shades of the Sword Coast: Shades of the Sword Coast is a mod that adds new quests and enhances existing areas. The first game from the Baldur's Gate series includes many areas that introduce some empty places. This creates a chance for new stories to appear. That is the main purpose of this mod: to add new stories, new characters, new items, and many new chances for your party to show what they are capable of. This is my favorite BG1 mod of all time
Black Hearts: Black Hearts is a new Quest mod for Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition that follows a plotline involving a character from Throne of Bhaal, Illasera, and a Red Wizard plot involving a dangerous new ally that has joined Sarevok’s cause. This mod repurposes fights from the Black Pits module, using those as a basis for various objectives given to players for the questline (with some variations to them in many cases).
Mechanics Lore from Learning: The Lore From Learning is broken down into more targeted components for the player. However, they all work on the same mechanic: at every rest, your main character will have some time to read books, talk with their party, etc. It is during these rest periods where lore triggers will be evaluated and, if appropriate, bonuses awarded.
Tweaks Anthology: The Tweaks Anthology is a WeiDU compilation of nearly 200 components of cosmetic changes, house rules, and other tweaks. Some of these were fan requests, others are needed changes, and others simply make dealing with the more irritating aspects of the game engine easier. Each component can be installed separately so the player can pick and choose only which ones they wish to install.
Tome and Blood: Tome and Blood is a mod that revises and expands the class options for Mages and Sorcerers. This mod began as the Sorcerous Origins kitpack, which took advantage of the newly added Sorcerer kit options to add several kits to Sorcerers. It has since grown into a mod that makes changes to all Mage and Sorcerer kits, spells and items as well as adding dozens of new kits, abilities and functionality.
Combat Skill Proficiencies: This mod is all about improving gameplay. While I love mods that bring the game closer to PnP, like Rogue Rebalancing and aTweaks, BG is a single-player computer game. If tweaking a rule makes this specific game more fun, then it's a good tweak, PnP be damned. Consider this mod as a collection of 'house rules' specific to the proficiency systems in Baldur's Gate campaigns. Every choice has been made with an eye to the particular gameplay mechanics of BG2 and the EEs. Everything is completely optional. You can use as many or as few of the mod components as you want. There is no 'core' component; use what you like, ignore what you don't.
Stat Overhaul: This makes a number of tweaks to ability scores and related aspects of the game rules, such as saving throws, experience points, and magic resistance. Everything is completely optional. You can use as many or as few of the mod components as you want. There is no 'core' component; use what you like, ignore what you don't.
NPCs/Companions
Drake: Drake is crude, sarcastic and never minces his words. Unusually pragmatic and cynical for a servant of justice, he nonetheless follows the ideals of the Tyrran faith, albeit often in… unorthodox ways. He prefers to live through life as it is rather than how it should be, and indulges heavily in drink and innuendo. This puts him at odds with his peers, and his direct personality often causes the same with his travelling companions. For all his apparent faults, however, Drake is honest, reliable and often more intelligent than his demeanor may suggest. He has a strong sense of morality, choosing to see the world in more than black and white. He is strongly devoted to his family above all things, including the Order.
Sirene: Sirene exhibits many of the typical qualities expected of a paladin; she is kind, dutiful and faithful. However, beneath her calm exterior lies a hidden temper owing to the fell blood which flows in her veins. Though she is a devoted champion of Ilmater, a past of being ostracized and persecuted by those she wishes to call her fellow men has left her unsure of her abilities and worthiness. She can be easily provoked by challenging, insulting or mocking her faith, which can be seen in her interactions with characters such as Tiax, Eldoth or even Xan, though she is also quick to acknowledge and apologize for her mistakes. She is closer to the ‘good’ side of her alignment rather than the ‘lawful’, and prefers protecting the weak to destroying evil. Because of this, she may be slightly more tolerant of evil companions, even if she can also be quite judgmental towards them. However, she will not tolerate Dorn (though they can come to an uneasy truce during Siege of Dragonspear)
Bristlelick: The mod adds a new NPC – a Gnoll Bruiser, a former bandit, who worked for Garclax, a gnoll you may also encounter in the original game during the investigation of the Bandit Camp. Bristlelick is a frontline warrior of neutral character. He enjoys battle, a fine meal, and seeks vengeance for the death of his trusted companion, Bull-Tall. The mod includes a series of timed talks, some scenery talks, and a set of Bristle’s personal items. To make him fit well into the concept, he also received his very own kit. The NPC may join your party near the rocky road on the Bandit Camp area (AR1900). In Siege of Dragonspear, he may join the team near the first camp (BD1000).

Speaking of video game karma systems, I once broke Baldur's Gate 1's karma system so bad, Imoen left my party. Which apparently takes Talent.
So what happened is in like the Friendly Arm Inn or Candlekeep, I got caught stealing from a chest, the guards were called, and I couldn't get around them to escape, so I killed at least one. Cue reputation drop.
Okay fine, whatever. Except this keeps happening. By the time, I get to Nashkell, I am being followed by any guard who sees me. My reputation is so in the hole that finishing the Nashkell mines and getting the +2(?) reputation points, does nothing. I'm still sitting at 20 reputation points (Active warrant for my arrest for those who don't know)
I can't even get the bandit scalp quest from the guard captain in Beregost because she just instantly tries to arrest. The game is utterly unbroken and borderline unplayable at this point because everyone just tries to arrest me (or won't talk to me). The point is, I had been at 20 reputation points since before going into the Nashkell Mines.
And finally, completely by accident, while I'm kicking around Nashkell again trying to figure out how to salvage this game, Imoen leaves me. Which is a rare enough thing, that every Baldur's Gate player I tell this to (which is admittedly not many people) goes, "I didn't realize she could do that"
Yeah... apparently she can, and I wasn't even playing a Blackguard that time. Pretty sure I had a Good/Neutral alignment that run...
