thinking about how twisted it is that griffith tries to reconstruct the band of the hawk but made up of apostles. he's so miserable all he can think to do is build this cardboard version of the last time he was happy, but he ends up making it out of beings who are actively killing and harming those that he loves. loved? he even gets it slightly off name-wise. he's a falcon trying to lead the band of the hawk.

also contrast it with guts' found family. he comes really close to creating a real new band of the hawk, even tho he'll never have that same happiness. but he keeps fighting! he keeps fighting and failing and fighting for those he loves. narrative foils chefs kiss. anyways if guts doesnt kill griffith im doing it myself

Just read Berserk a couple weeks ago, and (as anyone who follows me no doubt knows (sorry lol)) am currently obsessed, but oof, what a fandom to enter. I get how it wound up this way (even if I'm not going to bandwagon with the negativity) because the story is so intricate, and Miura was hailing so many works with his art and writing, and the manga has been running for so long that literally everything has been talked about and analyzed ad nauseum. Heap all that in with today's lack of media literacy, and what you've wound up with is a patience-testing fandom of all time. will def make and leave any of my own analysis here on tumblr under keep reading lines, and only lurk elsewhere i believe lolol

I do find it interesting how, with every terrible thing Griffith has done in the Golden Age up to the Eclipse, the manga still makes you feel bad for him down to the last second in the Eclipse arc, at which point it turns it upside down and makes you loathe him.

Dealing with his disability, everything he lost, the trauma of the year of torture, the likes.

And what I find most confusing, the fact it initially makes it so ambiguous whether he chose to sacrifice all his friends to the Behelit. Because that sequence shows him as very lost and kinda just following what the other godhand guys are telling him to do, up to the minute he loses his feelings of remorse.

Still, you know he made the choice, and he emerges in all his evil from the egg. To which we bear witness to the most distasteful scene in the entire manga so far. A sexualized rape scene.

I'm considering getting back into Berserk, this time aware of all it's flaws, but it's true that after that scene and some spoilers I got I stopped respecting it as much.

But there were still really good storytelling, as evidenced by me writing this post, and things I genuinely got out of it, like Guts' journey and the manga's acknowledgement of trauma for male rape victims. So I don't think I'm throwing it out just yet.

I'm gonna continue reading.
