An Unholy Death—A Novella: A Food Lovers’ Village Mystery by Leslie Budewitz #Review
Tumblr media
This has been one of my favorite series but somehow I missed the collection of short stories, Carried to the Grave, which includes An Unholy Death.

An Unholy Death—A Novella: A Food Lovers’ Village Mystery Historical Cozy Mystery Prequel - Food Lovers’ Village Mysteries Setting - Montana Beyond the Page Publishing (August 29, 2023) Paperback ‏ : ‎ 104 pages ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1960511262 ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1960511263 Kindle ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0CF6474VX

To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Food Lovers’ Village Mysteries, we’re bringing out stand-alone editions of readers’ favorites from Carried to the Grave and Other Stories. Our first selection is the novella An Unholy Death, a historical prequel to the Agatha Award-winning series opener, Death al Dente. It’s 1910 and newly married Kate Murphy arrives in Jewel Bay, Montana, with her husband Paddy, proprietor of Murphy’s Mercantile, intent on building their life together in this unfamiliar place. The conditions are rough—as are some of their clientele—and get even rougher when Kate discovers the dead body of the widowed local preacher. She’s determined to keep his young daughter safe, but the task takes all the courage Kate can summon as she faces the first of many mysteries unfolding in her new home . . . Dollycas's Thoughts In the first book in the Food Lovers' Village Mystery Series, Death Al Dente, we learn Erin Murphy takes over her family’s century-old general store and turns it into a boutique market filled with local delicacies. In this book, An Unholy Death, author Leslie Budewitz takes us back in time to Murphy’s Mercantile when Erin's ancestors, Kate and Paddy, were just starting to build their lives in Jewel Bay. Kate is stunned when she finds the body of a local preacher. He had been raising his daughter alone after his wife's death and now she is alone. Kate takes her under her wing while she and others try to find out who killed the preacher and why. I really enjoyed this novella. I love getting the backstory for a series and learning the beginning of life in Jewel Bay, Montana was very interesting.  Ms. Budewitz's descriptive storytelling really brought the place to life. Kate Murphy has come to join her husband Paddy from my home state of Wisconsin so I loved all of her references to home and how different it is from there to Montana and the frontier town of Jewel Bay. Katie helps at the mercantile but she also gives piano lessons. This helps her get to know her new neighbors and make some friends. Grace, the daughter of the local pastor, is one of Kate's students. After the girl loses her father you see how kind-hearted and caring Kate is. She is a strong woman and with the need to get to the truth. Even in a book of just over 100 pages, we get to know both Kate and Grace very well and care about their future. That is a true credit to the author. The mystery unfolds very quickly. There are several theories and secrets that need to be revealed to gain focus on who killed the pastor. I was totally caught off guard when the mystery was solved. In An Unholy Death, Ms. Budewitz gives her readers a look at a difficult time in Jewel Bay. It appears that Murphy's held on through the years passing the family business along and now to Erin in the current time. I can't believe this was the only mystery Kate Murphy was part of and solved. This novella may just be a one-time thing, but I sure wouldn't mind visiting Kate in her Jewel Bay again.

#FlashbackFriday featuring Simmering with Resentment: A Cookbook Nook Mystery by Daryl Wood Gerber #Review / #Giveaway @DarylWoodGerber

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I was not able to review when they were first released that have been screaming at me from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

With Bride’s Dream Expo in town, it’s all things wedding in Crystal Cove, including at the Cookbook Nook, where owner Jenna Hart is preparing for her own wedding in just a few short weeks. But there’s a dark cloud hanging over the festive mood by the name of Sarita Strachline, a woman Jenna helped convict of arson who is now out of jail and bent on revenge. And when Jenna and Rhett’s intimate prenuptial dinner is rocked by an explosion that nearly takes Rhett’s life, Jenna can’t help but think Sarita is to blame. Desperate to prove Sarita’s guilt but consumed by worries over Rhett’s condition, Jenna reluctantly lays her case out for the police and leaves the investigation in their methodical hands. Still, she can’t help piecing together the clues, and as the evidence begins to mount, Jenna realizes that revenge may be a dish best served cold, but she can cook up a scheme of her own to bring the culprit to justice—she just has to hope it doesn’t blow up in her face . . . Includes mouthwatering recipes! Dollycas's Thoughts Jenna and Rhett's big day is almost here but Sarita Strachline is back in Crystal Cove looking for revenge. Jenna helped seal her conviction for arson, a crime she tried to blame on Rhett. When Rhett and Jenna try to have a cozy dinner by themselves it is blown up literally landing Rhett in the hospital. They are convinced Sarita is responsible for the explosive act. Worried about Rhett and trying to keep all the wedding arrangements on track Jenna agrees to leave the investigation to the police. Then her prime suspect meets her demise. Much to the dismay of Police Chief Cinnamon Pritchard Jenna jumps into the investigation and puts a target on her back. Will Jenna live long enough to say "I do" or has her luck finally run out? I have been excited about Jenna and Rhett's nuptials before they even got engaged and was excited that this was the book where it would finally take place. They are so in love and that radiates whenever they are together. They are surrounded by a great cast of supporting characters. Jenna's Aunt Vera is always my favorite but every character within these pages is well developed and continues to grow as the story continues. They are engaging and diverse and every reader can find someone to identify with. The author puts forth a complicated mystery. A mystery her protagonist really tries not to get involved in but it is clear her insight is needed. There were more suspects than I anticipated at first and I really enjoyed all the twists and turns and following all of the clues. I had an inkling who the guilty party was but I was wrong and very surprised when all was revealed and a little sad too. I did enjoy the subplots about the weddings and some kittens left at the firehouse. Kittens are always fun and Wedding Planner Extraordinaire Harmony Bold was great. She kept Jenna calm through all things wedding related including some "mini snafu"s. Ms. Gerber does a fabulous job of setting a scene making it so easy to visualize each place, everything that is happening, what people are wearing, and the food they are eating.  Oh, the food. Do not read any of Daryl Wood Gerber's books with an empty stomach. The food descriptions will have you craving every bite of food discussed. For this book, I would recommend flipping to the back of the book to find the recipe for Banana Mocha Cupcakes and baking them up before you start reading the story. That way when the cravings start you will have some tasty treats to enjoy while trying to solve this Cookbook Nook Mystery. Simmering with Resentment really shows the author's cozy mystery writing chops. I escaped right into this story and enjoyed every minute with these wonderful characters. I did have a little disappointment as I wanted a bigger final scene using all the author's descriptive talents but that doesn't keep this story from being a 5-Star(fish) read. As always I recommend reading the series from the start for maximum enjoyment but this story can be read on its own as well.
