Is it true that Dutch people are very eco friendly because of the well know biking culture? My mother refer to you guys as that (no she is not Dutch). By the way how did biking culture rise or begin? Are you from childhood that biking is more practical or is it a geographical thing since the Netherlands is located pretty south in Europe.

Sorry for the late reply! And great question actually. I also didn’t know why we ride so many bikes, but I tried to search it up a bit for you (and also myself since I was wondering too why we actually ride so many bikes 😂🤷🏽‍♀️).

So this is what I found after i searched a little myself: after the ‘50s the car became a more and more popular way of transport. But because of that a lot of bike riders were pushed off the road and that ended up in a lot of bikers getting killed in traffic. In 1971 3.000 people died on the bike and 450 were children. When a journos child also died during a accident on his bike he wrote the article “stop childmurder”.

That article caused a lot of anger in Holland and together with the fact that the Dutch government already decided to renew the infrastructure in towns a lot of bike paths were “build” in Holland. There we can ride our bike without having to worry about cars etc.

They also say it’s so popular because our country is flat - no mountains - and almost everywhere you can put you bike away. Like a little parking place for bikes haha. These (in many varieties) you see almost everywhere.

Interesting fact: during world war 2 the Germans decided it was forbidden to ride our bikes. So they literally stopped people on their bikes and grabbed the bike to use it themselves. While it was a touchy subject many years ago. Today we joke about it like: “Well they still have to give our bikes back 😤”

Interesting fact 2: we indeed learn how to ride our bikes young! As children we ride our bikes with these little wheels on the side. (I presume you all do?)

And then I also had this bright orange flag on my bike (aaaah the memories😍)

And then when you’re old enough the scary part starts and your dad will learn you how to ride WITHOUT these wheels on the side. 😳 Absolute horror and very scary, but also tiring for the dad because he has to run next to you to make sure you’re not falling etc etc

Interesting fact 3: While searching why we ride our bikes I also came across this fact I almost forgot. At the age of 11/12 - in the final class before we go to high school - we have to get our biking diploma! In my time that was a route you had to ride through your town and in the end finish it at school. Of course you had to do all the handsignals etc etc. So left hand out = the sign you will turn to the left. Right hand out = you will turn to the right.

So the eco thing doesn’t really have something to do with it. Also we’re more located in Western Europe. The south is Spain/Italy Portugal etc etc
