“Tried to scare you”: Producer “almost killed” picketing writers with SUV
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today in Atlanta, producer Ian Woolf (BMF) allegedly tried to run over protesting writers with his SUV, as reported on Twitter by striking writer Brian Egeston (The Game, On a Wing and a Prayer), one of those nearly hit by the vehicle.
The full text of Brian Egeston's open letter to Woolf:
AN OPEN LETTER TO THE MAN WHO ALMOST KILLED ME ON THE WGA PICKET LINE TODAY. A thread… Dear Mr. Ian Woolf, Welcome to Atlanta. Years ago, forward thinkers and Civil Rights icons labeled our fair town, ‘the city too busy to hate’. What you did today on Hank Aaron Drive and blocks from the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr….was hateful. When you pointed your SUV at me as though it were a weapon and slammed the breaks within six feet of writers, I felt the hate and aggression of scenarios similar to Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and others who have been harmed at the hands of hate-filled oppressors. As I marched with the WGA in a peaceful protest, similar to the giants who have walked the very streets where you almost committed manslaughter, you chose to—in your own words— “Tried to scare you.” Mr. Woolf, this scare and intimidation tactic reeks of German Shepards, water hoses, bricks and burning flesh. It reeks of the worst kind of hate. A hate that continually divides us as a people. I would implore you, in hindsight, to consider the ramifications of killing an African-American man in the streets of the city too busy to hate, while being the producer of an African-American TV show, created by an African American man, run by an African-American Man. Mr. Woolf, your actions purveyed a deep generational hate for us. And that, sir, is a travesty for which you must be held accountable. If not by your superiors and peers, then by the people of Atlanta because the South will have something to say about what you did today. Should you choose to remain in our city, where I will remind you that you are a guest, I beg of you to lead with love and refrain from being a drum major for hate and potential manslaughter. I pray God’s grace and mercy over your life. Brian Egeston Writer

On a Wing and a Prayer (PG): "This is bad. This is really really bad".
#onemannsmovies review of "On a WIng and a Prayer" (2023). #OnaWingandaPrayer. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit plane movies. 2/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “On a Wing and a Prayer” (2023). Available on Amazon Prime as an “Amazon Original” is “On a Wing and a Prayer”. It looks like it lucked out in the meeting where they were handing out budgets. For, as Buggy (Trayce Malachi), one of the utterly disposable kids in the story, comments at one point “This is bad. This is really really bad”. From the mouths of babes…. Bob…

NaNo Interview: Tia Ross of Black Writers Events
Tumblr media
We feel so lucky that NaNoWriMo has such an amazing creative community of writers–and we feel even luckier when our participants are involved in other writing communities, activities, and groups! Today, we’ve interviewed Tia Ross, co-founder of Writeful Places and Black Writers Events, to find out more about the writing community she’s helped create:
1. Black Writers has been around for 20 years now! How did it get started, and how has the community grown and changed?
After graduating high school, I wanted to write novels. My search for a good writers’ group taught me that not everyone could understand nor relate to my stories, which, at the time, were about growing up in South Central Los Angeles. My themes, plots, characters, and slang usage in dialogue made no sense to fellow writers in my new home of Dallas, Texas, trying to critique my work.
Those groups showed me how immensely I enjoyed editing. I began studying editing, honing my skill, and, after moving to Houston several years later, I began freelancing as a fiction editor specializing in African-American literature. I quickly realized that my new clients hadn’t studied the craft or business of writing at all, so I formed a local group and invited subject experts to help aspiring authors gain the know-how they’d need to succeed.
I taught myself web design and created a group website. This was 1997–years before the Internet was popular–but the site attracted attention from writers around the world, all interested in joining my little local group! I didn’t see much benefit for them in that, but the advantages of expanding online were obvious. I then decided to create what became the first Internet-based 501(c)(3) literary arts organization for Black writers. Membership grew from 39 to over 7,000 within the first two years. In 1999, that was quite a feat!
What has changed is that we no longer have the time to interact via the technology we used back then. On a day-to-day basis we now connect mostly via social media, but the emphasis has shifted to sharing information through physical and virtual events. In 2000 we launched Black Writers Reunion & Conference to great acclaim, and we offer writing retreat and getaways in tropical and other desirable locales.
2. What keeps you involved with the Black Writers community? What's your favorite part about it?
It’s that the need still exists for an organization providing the kind and quality of the programs we offer our community. It’s seeing the impact we make, the support to keep it up, the results of our efforts, and the accomplishments of those who’ve been integral to our story. My favorite part is the successes of original members like:
Brian Egeston, who was an aspiring novelist with a wicked sense of humor back then. Now he’s a multi-published author and television writer with credits such as The Quad, House of Payne, and The Rickey Smiley Show.
Professor Tonya M. Evans, who was promoting two poetry books in those days. She followed those with her first publishing law book, Literary Law Guide for Authors: Copyright, Trademark, and Contracts in Plain Language. She’s since published several more in that series and offers publishing consulting, business entity, trademark and copyright registration services to help writers, creators, and innovators protect and maximize the value of their intellectual property and brand. Remarkably, she is one of only five speakers, out of over 100, who have presented at all seven of our Black Writers conferences.
ReShonda Tate Billingsley, who rejected numerous publishing offers and self-published her first book, My Brother’s Keeper, in 2001. She’s since authored more than 40 books, with two movie adaptations and numerous movie options.
They’re inspiration for me.
3. How is the organization planning to evolve its community in the future?
That involves another author and leader who inspires me, Rekesha Pittman of Get Write Publishing. Rekesha is a publishing strategist who not only coaches writers to publication but has also been organizing writers’ events of her own across the country. We’ve recently partnered to form Writeful Places LLC, which is dedicated to educating, nurturing, and supporting all authors worldwide. Black Writers Events will continue to offer conferences and retreats as a subsidiary of Writeful Places.
4. How can people get involved in the Black Writers community, or find out more about it?
Subscribe at http://blackwritersevents.com for announcements on upcoming Black Writers events. Those interested in Writeful Places may sign up at http://writefulplaces.com. You can also connect with us on social networks.
Tia Ross is an event strategist and editor. She’s the force behind Black Writers Events, co-founder of Writeful Places LLC, and managing director of The Ovation Group, which handles site and venue selection, contract negotiations, event management, travel planning, writing, editing, virtual event coordination, project management, and technical services for professional speakers, authors, and event planners. Once named one of the ‘Top 37 book doctors in the U.S.’ by Writer’s Digest, she edits nonfiction, fiction, web content, and technical and business documents for clients worldwide. You can follow her on Twitter or Instagram @TiaTRoss.

Disney Channel Greenlights Centenary Event For Disney Television Animation With The Greenlight Of Cookies And Milk, Disney TVA’s 100th Series Showrunned By Laurence Fishburne,Helen Sugland & Brian Egeston.
Disney Channel has given series greenlight to “Cookies & Milk” an adaptation of the book of Shawn Amos, the series showrunned by Laurence Fishburne,Helen Sugland (Marvel’s Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur) and Brian Egeston  (“The Game,” the upcoming film “On A Wing and A Prayer”) becomes Disney TVA’s 100th Series In Production since the launch of The Wuzzles, the series slated to debut on Disney Channel on 2024 as part of Disney TVA’s 40th Anniversary of funding.
“Cookies & Milk”  follows the summer adventures of harmonica-playing middle schooler Ellis Johnson as he begrudgingly helps his wildly optimistic and quite possibly magical father open the world’s first cookie shop in 1970s Hollywood, California.
Partially based on Shawn Amos's own experiences growing up the son of Wally “Famous” Amos in a mostly white area, and packed with humor, heart, and fun illustrations, this debut novel sings with the joy of self-discovery, unconditional love, and belonging.
“Cookies & Milk,” is executive produced by Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland of Cinema Gypsy Productions (ABC’s “black-ish” and Disney Channel’s upcoming “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur”), Jesse Murphy and James Sears Bryant of Jesse James Films, and Shawn Amos. Brian Egeston (“The Game,” the upcoming film “On A Wing and A Prayer”) is set as co-executive producer and story editor.
In making the announcement, Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, said, “It’s an absolute coup to bring Shawn Amos’ heartfelt, humorous book to Disney television screens and, with the guiding vision, credibility and track record of our Cinema Gypsy and Jesse James Films creative team, we’re looking forward to telling this authentic and relatable story about belonging, self-acceptance and forgiveness.”
Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland of Cinema Gypsy said, “We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Shawn Amos, Ayo Davis and the talented team at Disney Branded Television. Shawn’s semi-autobiographical novel, ‘Cookies & Milk,’ is partially based on his own experiences growing up as the son of Wally ‘Famous’ Amos. This humorous and heartwarming exploration of summer fun and friendship, seen through the eyes of a young Black boy being raised by his divorced father, is full of joy, self-discovery and a whole lot of unconditional love.”
In a joint statement, Jesse Murphy and James Sears Bryant said, “We are so excited to have found the right home for this show with Disney Television Animation, Laurence and Helen. Shawn has created such a beautiful reimagining of his childhood in a narrative that we hope will universally connect with audiences on and off the page.”
Shawn Amos said, “What a dream to see this Black kid from Hollywood become a Disney character. I wrote ‘Cookies & Milk’ for my son to help him understand his family, his culture and himself. I hope kids of all colors will see something of their own selves in Ellis. I’m so grateful to Helen, Jesse and Laurence for championing my story. I know it’s in good hands with them and the deeply creative folks at Disney.”
This series greenlight marks the second animated project at Disney for Cinema Gypsy, which has a first-look deal with ABC Signature and is in production on “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” for Disney Channel.
Additionally Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland have inked an overall development deal at Disney Television Animation and 20th Television Animation for the creation of new shows, films and specials for preschoolers, kids, teenagers and adults.
Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland join these 30 animators in inkind a overall development deal at Disney Television Animation.
