ok .... farscape momence
okay so randdommm thoughts dump time
FIRSTLY: there's some odd moments, huh, where its like. its never HORRIFIC but the "gore" for lack of a better term really pushes whatever the rating is on this show, LOL.... like the hand melting scene in last ep? & crichtons head freaking exploding in outer space in this ep? yeessshhh....
also also also. i see that this ep im on rn (dream a little dream) isnt a zhaan ep but as an aside. its sooo strange bc i love zhaan as a character but SIGHHHH. i noticed that zhaan-focussed eps, thus far, fall sooo flat and thats such a freaking shame!! i feel like they sorta dont know how to deal with her as the focus and they go too hard in the wrong direction. but anyways
and also they do make some odd decisions with her otherwise, even still. not ones im wholly against but... i feel like they sometimes dont pull them off well. and i say that bc usually its, like, with her - whereas with everyone else, i feel like they consistently nail and get right, even if the episode is weaker. its odd. maybe im just misreading her sometimes, or what. but again its a shame bc i rlly like her. and they do do GOOD stuff with her too, ofc- i love the subtleties they pull off with her sometimes- but sometimes im like man what like...
although that being said ido like that this ep did take the time to kinda. explore exactly what she went through in that interim period between s1 and s2 and i DO think, saving it for now, rather than doing it right at the beginning was the right choice. her being imprisoned and put to execution makes her state a lot more understandable. though i willsay- kinda obvious how like.... they were SCRAPING for a way to put this in here lol. its kind of weird to frame it with the nightmare thing but eh its functional and her talk with crichton is nice enough
ALSO i actually reallylove chiana and rygels dynamic and i DID enjoy seeing them in this ep, and i did enjoy bits of this ep BUT theresother aspects.... MY BRAIN is failingtonight so im struggling to put it into words. like a lot of this, like quite a few s2 eps, didnt quite work out for me...
i think courtroom episodes in scifi shows can be cool when theyre done right and cleverly, and really do explore themes of morality, but i cant really say that of this episode. i think chiana and rygel do make a good team but a lot of it is a bit weird and not in the fun goofy farscape weird but like just kinda like... pulled out your ass, weird? like the stick thing and stuff. i think they should have pushed some parts a lot more than they did, and focussed on the wrong bits elsewhere- but even then, i still dont know, bc...
i feel like this episode sort of lost its point in general bc im skimming through trivia on it and it looks like this script was kinda moved about a bit and that shows and thats a shame bc i think. like when this STARTED i assumed it would be a zhaan ep and i think that it really... should have been? like-
DONT GET ME WRONG like i said it was fun and i liked the rygel and chiana dynamic. i think: a) rygel and chiana are alone and have to work together without the team; b) rygel and chiana have to play lawyers and cant use their usual skillet... is a solid story BUT wlike i dont know like. i feel like if youre going to flashback like this and have zhaan introduce and conclude the episode it would have worked better as an exploration of her, and for it to be her narrative rather than that. and then i think that would work better if we focussed more on the injustices of the planet rather than, like, courtroom drama bc they also lost sight of those, too, ro at least they werent rlly developed fully either . i think those two themes would have been stronger to go into for this setup and rygel and chiana antics tabled for another time
anwyays its funny i said so much here bc it didnt feel like that much. i also totally blanked out on last ep too i feel like that... AGAIN. THERES SOMETHING WITH S2 WHERE ITS LIKE- i cant tell if the end of s1 just raised such a bar for me, but the mediocre reallyyyy feels mediocre . I DONT MEAN ITS LIKE BAD BAD and im for sure still excited and continuing with the show BUT YKNOW. i get it man all showshave a bit like this LOL
and again theres still good stuff in there. well i mean last ep. EH. I DONTKNOW. IT FELT LIKE IT DRAGGED FOR SO LONG AND I JUST DIDN CARE...HELP...SORRY. I DONT EVEN REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS. but maybe thats just because im crazzy fucking out of it rn

hey i never really watched or followed the chibnall era what was wrong with his writing that made people happy he’s gone
i think this will get you different opinions based on who you ask.
a LOT of people were extremely unhappy with the s12 timeless child plot twist. which, if you don't know: basically he redestroyed gallifrey, and revealed the doctor is not a timelord at all, but was instead the progenitor OF the timelords (a child that kept regenerating, even when they died) and that she was tortured on as a child, being repeatedly killed to realise the secret behind her regenerative abilities, to create the timelord race and then had her mind wiped.
which, im not a fan of. some ppl are? but mostly it panned: lots of ppl are unhappy, bc theyre saying it's "ruining the lore"; personally i dont mind since dw is fast and loose with its canon - and im moreso unhappy about centreing the doctor as, like, the big important chosen one in the universe (like blech) bc its just such a stale narrative decision.
but even before that there was a lot of criticism of chibnalls writing. and again: ur gonna get different opinions on who you ask. there's, uh, for example... a LOT of ppl (off tumblr, mostly) who tout it as sjw bullshit (yawn) bc of jodie and the diverse tardis team. that's bs outrage over nowt, ofc. but like- other than that its just... the writing. yeah, some ppl like it but ik a lot are unahppy with it for different reasons.
and to, like, summarise my own thoughts on chibbers writing: there's LOTS of little things that sort of build up for me. but at the crux of it? personally i dont think the man can write sci-fi - like, at all. thats my own personal main gripe with him. i hear he's good at straightforward drama: whilst ive never seen broadchurch myself, a lot of ppl whose opinions i trust liked it well enough; and furthermore, when it came to torchwood, he did have one or two eps in there that i liked in premise. however, when it comes to sci-fi, i respectfully think he just flounders. like he just cant integrate those other skills he has into a scifi story. the tardis was super overcrowded in s11&s12 (and that brought its own issues) but even still it was sort of... laughable, how much development the companions got. a lot of the time they'd sit there like pints of milk and just?? not really do anything? it got a little better in s12- but its like... he doesnt know how to handle a sci-fi storyline, whilst also exploring the characters in tandem and its like theyre just theyre as objects to move things along. its really fuckin weird.
like, in the most recent episode (last years NY's special, Revolution of the Daleks) the pacing was so strange. there's this whole section in the middle of all the action, where they just STOP and talk inside of the tardis. and don't get me wrong - i dont mind a heart to heart! but a lot of the companions are, like, purely telling and not showing their personality msot of the time - and thats it! its so... stale. they just stand around, state something about themselves and then just do nothing half the time? bc he just doesn't know how to use them in the stories. unlike in rtd or moffat era, where you'd have the companions jumping in and actually interacting with stuff- you'd know its just... like theyre being swept away by the plot. and you could frankly cut them out of almost all of the episodes, replace them with a sonic screwdriver or some other technobabble and it just wouldnt make any damn difference to the vibe of the ep, which is a shame bc they had PROMISE as ideas but they just don't pull their weight.
and i think that's just... super unfortunate. bc a lot of the pull with nuwho especially IS the companions and their personalities and when theyre just flat cardboard cutouts its got no energy. not to mention, like, the companions really facilitate a lot of the plots themselves- not the other way round! having companions ask questions, explore, and make decisions and react to stuff... that's IMPORTANT to really realising a lot of it. there's been a lot of times in eps where i was watching it and i just WANTED desperately for one of them to do something, to ask the doctor about it but like... she kind of just stands around and talks to herself? then there's a canned comment abt how theyre the #fam? its like. ok.
and then its like- maybe if they were being pushed to the side, and the show was servicing plot over characters that would be ONE thing but its also like i get a LOT of insecurity in general from chris when it comes to sci-fi writing, too. which ok, dude. but its like- he'll introduce a concept, but never fully explore it; he'll just drop it, and introduce something else; and then drop that and move on. and its like... we dont get any actual playing with whats going on? its like-
its just all... ultimately very superficial. like ai generated doctor who. i dont want to say it hasnt got heart, but sometimes it really feels like it you know? and a lot of it is just.. flat. because you can bring in lots of cool stuff (visuals, bring back jack, build a found family type, give us a fun quirky doctor) but if you just don't actually put work into making it all happen then its just going to be like, pretty wrapping paper on an empty box, yeah? and so its like- its like theres PIECES in a lot of s11 and s12 that are right, and they're fine, and they could make for good stories but he just doesn't know how to use them. like, at all.
and there's honestly like. a lot of other... smaller things that i could mention. i feel like theres just like... lots of little issues wrong with it all, but theyre all so fundamental and they all just build up and its just- it just culminates in bad writing, man. not moffat type of bad. but just... nothing interesting at best; frustrating at worst.
ofc theres ppl who will disagree with me and like it and thats fine. and theres also ppl who will have other things they dont like abt it that they can bring up. i would advise lookin thru ppl talking abt it on here more, omg. get a nice lil crossection of all the little messes ppl babble on abt.

racism isn't unintentional, they were well aware of what they were doing when they reduced poe to harmful stereotypes and sidelined finn in favor of white ppl, and it was a deliberate and homophobic choice to make everyone straight, none of this is unintentional which is kind of the entire issue and they do not deserve leniency or forgiveness and im glad that it's reflected in audience reviews b/c frankly LGBT and fans of color didn't like it for good reasons dont invalidate that b/c ur white
“at this point im so distracted by the homophobia and racism that every single character being out of character is just like the icing on the cake, like have your opinion on the movie but don’t be surprised that fans we’re digging the blatant racism and homophobia (and seriously, never again say they meant well when writing in racists tropes, thats fucking gross dude)my mood is u using “or*entalist” while trying to explain that you’re not ignoring the racism in the fandom… you literally said it was good intentions gone wrong that led to the racism we saw on screen, it wasn’t! it was white dudes who loved kylo ren as much as every other white person and hated all of the poc in the movie, if lgbt/poc fans are saying the movie was shit you know they’re saying that b/c we got shafted so dont be like “well it had good parts” like who cares, it was bigoted”
firstly: I use the term orientalist in the context of the racist exotification of east asians by western countries, england and america have a history of this, so does australia, I’m specifically addressing that exact form of appropriation as opposed to, for example, the appropriation of black culture, it was an attempt to conjure up specific associations to make a point and i’m sorry i wasn’t clear enough in my use of the word I assumed i would be understood but I should have worded myself better.
like i said before, I can’t speak for the entire lgbt community by from my tiny place in it and for myself I never expect a mainstream genre film coming out at this point in time to give us anything more than maybe audience baiting, tv shows have more freedom but even Star Trek, a franchise of similar standing to star wars, only managed last year to make canon gay characters a thing that wasn’t subtextual and it was only a few seconds of screentime. Is it disappointing and frustrating? Absolutely! we need to keep pushing for representation. but i wouldn’t call it’s exclusion homophobia but rather a result of the inability for the franchise to go beyond what’s safe in representation due to the homophobic culture of the west and in overseas markets (such as china).
If we’re going to change this garbage representation we have to think nuanced about it, individuals can be pressured to change but we have to understand who they answer to.  Money is of course the root of all this, the fear of losing their biggest over seas market is one thing, if Disney owned Marvel movies edit the race of their character to avoid losing Chana’s audience don’t you think that Disney owned Star Wars might be in the same shitty position in terms of LGBT content? You don’t think that a franchise so entrenched in military skirmishes that WARS is in the title might have some other motivations that we need to examine critically? after all the Pentagon funds movies provisionally based on how positively they show militaristic content, and space fascists aside let’s not forget it is about generals and fighter pilots and bombardiers. there are a lot of institutions at play here in the influencing of how the movie show’s it’s content. it’s not just one man it is many making these bad decisions.
And as for racial representation as i stated i love the casting personally of poe and finn and rose, and the various resistance members, but I cannot speak on their characterisation and stereotypes and would like to see the arguments against them laid out because this really is the point i have least perspective on.
Racism based on skin isn’t something i face because growing up in australia my mum immigrated here after the white australia policy was already ended, australia is still a racist country and the type of racism my mum and i faced was based on accent and sterotypes about “wogs” and horrible nationalism and islamophobia.  SO I don’t get a say in if it’s bigoted or not. But I do want to be able to talk to people who, because of my weird accent assume i’m american, will let their guard down enough for me to amplify the voices of people of colour concerned about this film. I want to be able to talk to people who because of my presentation of femininity assume i’m straight, will let their guard down, and i can talk to them and about why i think lgbt representation is important and should have been in this film.
my enjoyment of a movie doesn’t make it morally pure, i don’t believe any movie is morally pure, but i think we have to rate these things complexly and I care that it had good parts because kids deserve to see themselves in fun genre movies and this film was a baby step and coul have been better but if people keep buzzing about the stuff they want then the garbage money driven execs might be less resistant next time around
star wars is too big a franchise to die, it survived the prequels after all, so we have to be SPECIFIC with our criticisms if we want change.
listen, you seem determined to hate me and that’s fine, I’d rather you didn’t but you don’t have to like the movie that’s okay.
bigotry is pervasive in many cultures, we have to get rid of it, and your anger and frustration is an important part of that.
but i’m only gonna respond with my thoughts and feeling and my thoughts are that if we wanna fix things we have to be clear and nuanced in our discussions before we outright dismiss this type of film, my feelings are that it’s fiction shaped by the climate it was made in and the responses to it are also shaped by that climate and from my position in al this i have some criticisms but overall don’t think it is the be all and end all battlefield for representation.
anyway, another bias i have is i assume that people working on a franchise they love are gonna go in with good intentions, they have their own blind spots and biases that result in bad writing and casting decisions. being aware of these things is not excusing them it’s putting them in context. wanna change it? write about it. be clear. make a vlog. record a podcast. you sent me a message and that amplified your words so that’s a good step forward but you’re still being really vague be more specific
i agree with your concepts but not your specifics because you’re being too general with me.
i don’t appreciate your tone because i have, you know, emotions, but my emotions aren’t what matter here, i still see what you’re saying and while i don’t agree with how you’re coming at it i think you’re being hyperbolic based on truths. they should have done better.
listen, i don’t know who you are but i’m not here to fight you, hey, what would you recommend I watch instead in terms of film? I can think of some decent scifi and fantasy content that have POC character and/or LGBT content in terms of tv that i have and haven’t watched (luke cage, star trek, the exorcist, raising dion, sense8, Shadowhunters) but it’s not enough and in varying levels of quality but if you have movie recs you think are good on this measure i wanna hear them because everyone deserves good scifi and fantasy stories

Top 10 Mahou Shoujo Shows for Babies (Part 1)
I’ll be the first person to admit, getting into Mahou Shoujo is hard.
With the lacking amount of accessible critique and over the top presentation shows of the genre adopt,
It can be genuinely uninviting for many anime fans to get a foot in the door that is Magical Girl.
After my last video, I received a handful of comments asking about what I’d recommend as great gateway shows for a newbie.
While a recommendations list is all good and well, giving context to why these shows are worth your time is what i’m more interested in talking about today.
Before getting into the list I’d like to clarify that the choice being presented arnt tiered based on quality nor personal preference.
Some of these shows I love more than others and others not so much; However when recommending shows to try in a sub genre like Mahou shoujo, I find it counterproductive to introduce ratings when breaking down audience bias.
Also I’m judging the viability of these shows on their first five episodes, maybe a few chapters of the manga.
With that out of the way, let's get into the first section….
Kill la Kill
In a world where facism has taken hold of Japanese government, scissor blade wielding badass Ryuko Matoi is on a quest to avenge the death of her father. This brings her to Honnouji Academy, a school run by the iron fist of Satsuki Kiryuin.
For the sake of finding her father’s murderer, Ryuko must demonstrate pride in her body and fighting spirit with the help of a bloodthirsty seifuku known as Senketsu.
Let's say you made a magical cheesecake. Amongst the common choices, of strawberries, banana and cherries you dig through and find the tangy lemon that is Hiroyuki Imaishi’s Kill la Kill.
Trigger has done some fantastic work in its six years as a studio, revolutionizing modern anime as we know it.
However what I never hear ANYBODY talk about is how Imaishi and co.’s work has pushed the concept of the Magical Girl.Kill La kill is a bombastic, stylish addition to the genre and a fantastic entry point for introducing others to Mahou Shoujo.
It has a really fresh, fun take on the Magical warrior, in its most literal form. The use of a mascot character being the transformation item is rare enough, but including symbiote-esc elements to the costume as a whole is something i’ve never really seen done outside of comic books stateside.
While some may critique the shows use of “Fanservice” to be pandering or perverted, I don't think it should be a roadblock in trying KLK out. Most of the nudity presented serves into a message about confidence and having pride in who you are.
It's not trite BS like what you see in Queens Blade or (shudder) Master of Martial Hearts.
If you’re trying to get your little brother or a friend to try Mahou shoujo without having to preface starting crunchyroll with a disclaimer- about how your a real man, throw this on with a bowl of popcorn and a pitcher of lemonade. You’ll have a blast.
Shugo Chara
Amu Himamori is, for all intensive purposes, popular.
Or is she feared?
The “Cool and Spicy” character surrounding Amu pervades the relationships she tries to make with others.
Despite her crushingly shy nature, classmates interpret everything she does in a rebellious lense, perpetuating rumors without making the effort to get to know Amu outside of her reputation.
But in a miraculous turn of events, she is given the chance to rectify her social standing with the blessing of three strange eggs known as Chara, portions of Amu’s buried personality that act as guardian angels.
Originally watching the show while airing in 2008, I can say that Shugo Chara is a contender with the likes of Pretty Cure when it comes to presentation. I’m surprised I don't hear more people talk about the series to be honest.
Transformation sequences are minimal but catch the eye.
The concept of having multiple characters to change in and out of when needed lends to keeping the audience guessing, especially when paired transformations with new Chara come into play.
In combination, Peach-Pits colorful art design and Kenji Yasuda’s directing kept me glued to the screen.
While the shows premise isn't horribly original, Shugo chara stands out for it’s “heart on it’s sleeve” approach to character development.
Overall Shugo Chara has a very child friendly plot while addressing overlooked themes in most bishoujo.
Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt
Keeping this one nice and sweet as i’ve already mentioned Hiroyuki Imaishis contribution to the genre with Kill La Kill.
If you want to test your expectation or others of Mahou Shoujo while indulging in some vulgar toilet humor, then Panty and Stocking is worth checking out.
While shows like this may not be everyone's cup of tea, Gainax has definitely cranked out a fantastic parody addressing the more sexual undercurrents usually glossed over in Magical warrior.
You don't see many studios that have the confidence to implement pole dancing into their transformation sequences.
Atsushi Nishigori, Masahiko Otsuka, Yoh Yoshinari- Shit even my girl Sayo Yamamoto is here. With the diversity in staff, you’re bound to find something you like whether its the experimental realism in “Vomiting Point” or a saving private ryan homage with sperm ghosts in “Pulp Addiction”.
As someone who's watched all of Panty and Stocking through in both Japanese and English; I’d highly recommend the dub.
Not only does it help jokes stick but stays really close to the original intent while implementing some Adult Swim level humor.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably be swept away by the shows poppy, powerpuff girl-esc art and Teddyloid’s contributions to the OST, introducing punchy playlist worthy electronica. Just don't listen to it with your mom or anything.
Cardcaptor Sakura
Sakura Kinamoto is your typical fourth grader.
She's outgoing, participates in sports at school and is beloved by her fellow classmates.
One day, when returning from class Sakura hears a strange sound from her father’s study. Investigating the bookshelves, she opens a strange tome containing “Clow Cards”,
a magicians tarot deck imbued with the powers of aspected spirits.
However, with a gust of wind the cards are lost and with the help of the books guardian, Kero- Sakura must recollect the deck and discover her true self.
Cardcaptor Sakura is by far one of the least abrasive gateways into long form Magical Warrior.
I’m 20 episodes into the series and while I know I dont have the free time to watch another 50 I kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnddddddddddaaaaaaaaa dont careeeeeee?
The scenery is beautiful, pacing is mellow and everybody, whether it be top tier camcorder waifu Tomoyo to the cuckoo lander childhood crush Yukito will find a way to melt your heart.
When others talk about the typicality of magical girls, I find that Sakura presents many unorthodox takes on commonalities to the subgenre.
The show doesn't have transformation sequences, but rather invests its runtime on  inventive fight scenes and dynamic character development.
On the Manga side the series is much more compact read, with about 12 volumes not including the newly announced Clear Card Arc. Mokona and gangs luxurious, carefully laid linework are in the forefront, taking a less hi-scifi approach than their other titles.
When it comes to wholesome, genuine Mahou Shoujo- Cardcaptor Sakura is a great series to snuggle into a blanket and watch with a friend.
Sailor Moon
YOU DON'T NEED A PLOT SYNOPSIS FOR THE DRAGON BALL Z OF MAHOU SHOUJO. IF YOU DO, YOU’RE EITHER LIVING UNDER A ROCK OR TOO YOUNG TO BE ON THIS SITE. FUCK.
Yes, the Dic dub is borderline horrible if you didn't grow up with it and the shows a popular prototype for what we now consider the Magical warrior, which for some is pretty stock. BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT ISN'T FANTASTIC AND WORTH THE BINGE.
As far as Magical Warrior goes, Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon is a staple introduction to modern Mahou Shoujo.
While early sections of the series do contain buckets of filler, the show makes up for it with a lovable, diverse cast, Beautiful transformations and a fun premise.
Season three alone, Sailor Moon S is arguably one of the best installments in the genre and worth every second of your time as it showcases director Kunihiko Ikuhara, of Utena and Mawaru Penguindrum fame.
The story is nothing too crazy mind you; but if you’re interested in Sailor Moon manga-wise, Naoko Takeuchi’s illustrations are TO DIE FOR, drawn with meticulous detail and colored with a mixture of ink and translucent watercolors.
Look i’ll even make it easier; because I have no life and completed the show six times. A month or so ago I put together a “Abridged Viewing Guide” for people wanting to cut out useless filler so if you’re interested the link will be in the description.
Sailor Moon broke ground in the 90’s for what is now considered a “typical magical girl”. Truly, You would be doing yourself a disservice passing the series up.

every time i go on a rant about doctor who my power levelsliterally deplete
alright, first things first: ive heard so many people say that, after episode 1, the entire season goes downhill and the thing is?? with doctor who... i literally never know when to trust ppl or not, bc 50% of the time theyre RIGHT and it does get worse, and 50% of the time they literally just tank everything as soon as ANYTHING that can be misconstrued as an “agenda” pops up and yeah. YEAH, ITS DEFINITELY THE LATTER.
undoubtedly.... i think its picking up a lot more, as series usually do, with time. every shift tends to be experimental; most doctors, have rocky first seasons. i think, in comparison to others’ first runs, its doing quite fine!
however, see: most of the good episodes, have those slants that realy make the gross fanboys go off their SHITS. rosa, demons of punjab, kerblam (although prsonally... im still thinking over some of the messages, and i cant tell if imisinterpreted or What)   and witchfinders (the last epi i fully watched; fell asleep during it takes u away, so idk what to make of that just now)  are all. GOOD. like theyre GOOD fuckn episodes, but ... INCIDENTIALLY, THOSE EPISODES ARE ALSO  ALL. VERY “”POLITICAL””  HENCE WHY. THE FANBOYS JUST GO BANANAS AND SHIT ON THEM. hivemind activates, and i cannot tell you how many times ive heard ppl whining about it gwtting worse as the series progresses, and i was REAL scared bc i didnt find the beginning to be that entertaining,  but trust me. theyre wrong; theyre absolutly erong; and it does improve, in my opinion. its just ppl get mad over racism, how imperalism affectd countries other than the uk, corporations and sexism
THAT BEING SAID!!! although it is getting... better.... one aspect is kind of becoming clear to me - because absolutely NONE of those episodes (other than rosa, but he cowrote it( were written by chibnall himself and, actually,... he kind of wrote, UH, the worst ones???? in the season?? (.... tc...)and i jusT- I JUST THINK IN GENERAL...
i hear broachurch is good. right? and, like, it might be! but- i think the problem is just... LESS that he cant write, but he cant write sci fi speciically or needs a lot  of practice - like, even before this, the episodes he wrote were just simply not good. dinosaurs on a spaceship  was, like, GOD THATS A DOPE TITLE but hardly delivered (yes there were dinosaurs and yes they were on a spaceship, so fine but it was lacklustre as s) and... GOD FORBID, that mother fucker wrote 42 which, quitehonestly, was the most.... LIKE, although i bet theres worse if you look, i always considered it to be one of the worst episodes of new who? LIKE, its not- wrong in any GRRRRRRR way but is just so- so- ugh. like whatever, i dont care and none of this has any consequence, and it all feels recycled and like yall were just like “so we need... to push an episode out i guess?” which how disappointing bc that was his first go at writing on DOCTOR WHO and he did th...
AND ITS JUT. I think i saw it put somewhere that he just- doesnt ... HAVE the creativity? which makes a whole lot of sense, because none of his ideas have really... SHONE to mee, in that sort of way. moffat was a fucking pig, and he bungled overarching plots, and was part of the reason why i stopped watching DW when i was little but like- at least the man had good ideas, annoyingly enough. when restricted so single episodes,. LIKE when they didnt let him suck his own dick for seasons at a time on national tv, he was GREAT and like. his standalones remain some of the best the new era but fuckn..... c-chibnall? beore this season, evverything he wrote wa-s no offence- but they were all clunkers and fucking funnly enough i saw someone analysing them all and. im cryin bc . HE USES A FUCKING COUNTDOWN, TO TRY AND ADD TENSION IN LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE EPISOE HE WROTE BEFORE TH which is finebut. like... like i think its just DEMONSTRATIVE of how he falls short, when it comes to scifi, because ...its as if he’s employing these individual pieces but never has the heart to put them together? and he doesnt experiment with the cool elements, and what makes scifi GREAT and it all feels so safe, and as if he’s going through the motions if that makes ANY sense?????????????????????
like the two episodes tha.... REALLY stick out like sore thumbs, are both so similar i their shortcomings. the tsusuguuuryra ( I CANT SPELL IT!!) conudrum and 42 - both of which, have fine initial premises but theyre both handled in the most... boring of ways that doesnt ever explore them, and instead it tries too HARD and overloads itself with sci fi tropes, and complications galore. and that doesnt work!!! cakin iton doent WORK- rather, the result ends up meaningless because he spent SO long introducing new points of tension he forgot that, uh, they were points of TENSION and thus- like- the actual consequences never prevail, and nor does any of it build any Anticipation and its lie. alright then! fine. okay
LIKE 42 IS ALL LIKE: we lost the tardis and now the ship is hurtling towards the sun and we have 42 minutes until we all die now there’s a big scary sunn monster that has infected someone andnow its killing everyone but also to unlock the doors to the engine room we have to answer these pub queestions and also martha just got jetissoned into the sun but its fine bc she came back barely 5 minutes later and also the doctor is now infected what a TWIST! now just dump the fuel ut into the sun
AND THEN TC IS ALL LIKE - wiith them introducing the tardis is lost. oh also the doctors injured. oh also that mans pregnant. oh also theyre going to blow up the ship.oh  also that gremlin is going to eat the ship. oh also that doctor dude is ddead and that girl is too nervous to deliver the baby. oh also something is wrong twith that pilot. h shes dead now, now  just let the creature eat th bomb like it was going to do anyway
LIKE ITS LIKE- no offence... but what i consider it to be is a sign of insecurity?  lack of confidence in your writing, to write those parts WELL enough so they can support themselves, and instead you introduce as many different things you can THINK of to try and compensate.and instead nNONE o it lands-and again, its just....SEEMS LIKE THE CASE, ESPECIALLY ALSO WITH REGARDS TO HOW CHIBNALL DOESNT SEEM TO BE . ATTEMPTING ANYTHING... THAT INTERESTING, IF THAT MAKES SENSE? what his episodes feel like, is Functional and thats FINE and functiona episodes are alright but when th ewhole... DAMN season is th
on that note. why i also dont like him is ...
shes getting there, but its slow going, man. just let jodie be the fuckn doctor. finally, in kerblam she got to take fucking CHARGE and in witchunters too but.... otther than that, she really just. hasnt been ALLOWED to be THE DOCTOR, or HER DOCTOR at all and its stating to getfrustrating- and i think, as many ppl have pointed out i realise, its in part due to the fact she kind of just blends in with the team and lacks all the elements of the doctor that we love and its so . FRUSTRATING because jodie is amazing, and her doctor seems to have so much promise but its like he’s holding her fback ffrom being what she COULD and SHOULD be which !!! AAAAAAAAAAA- my head is in my god damn hands, man1!
SPEAKING OF THE TEAM, and not allwing people to reach their full potential...
personally, i thnik theres just too many  people in the tardis. i know that its very old-who, but like... HONESTLY? i think 2 characters is the best number- and whilst 3 might not sound like a HUGE INCREASe... well it kind of, uh, is?? LIKE- what i find best about 2 companions, and one doctor is there’s a very manageable set of interpersonal connections. 3 to be precise- between themselves, and hen one each with the doctor.
with four people... youre DOUBLING the number of interactions you have to develop, if that maks any sense?? like yaz&doctor, yaz&ryan, yaz&graham, graham&ryan, ryan&doctor, graham&doctor LIKE- LIKE ITS... ITS FINE if two people dont know each other that much but it jus t feels....  disconnected? as in, they dont feel as connected together because its hard to o intto eeach and every dynamic- what instead feels like the case, is that graham&ryan are operating as their own thing, with the doctor on the sidelines somewhee and with yaz also . ion the sideleines but even MORE so. ALTHOUGH i was never that fond of amy, what worked so well for the amy/rory/doctor  stretch was that each of them had a fulfilling interaction with each othe, yo uknow?
and also, whilst we’re on the topic: i similarly do still think two companions are better than one, bc in my opinion...  there’s only been one or two cases in new who, where a single companion has worked supe well in new who- DONNA was just... amazing for that, and bill was quite good alone too, and i think thats because? both relationships never got too... LIKE TOO MUCH, and didnt need a third party to lighten them ror offer a breather and they were both interesting enough (... no offence) to handle it on their own??
unlike clara and amy and martha- although poor martha i dont blame for, but it was just so GOD when jack arrived at th end of s3 to stop that fuc0sfj osdj 0sdfj HELLfire
t et the focus and is kind of ignored or a full episode or put into a corner, and i dont know- i dont know if that maks sensei- but its just.. its so CROWDED and its unfar becauuse
yaz is absolutely getting hthe short end of the stick and i kind of just wish she wasnt there. does that make sense? i adore her, and i adore her conceptually, but- i think the graham/ryan dynamic is just so rich , and she’s so disconnected to them both, and quite often during episodes she’s the one who doesnt get explored as deeply as the others and.... HONESTLY, its just not fair on her because she’s WONDERFUL annd her actrress is too and i thin k what would be moreappropriate was if she had her own series with the doctor and ryan, maybe?
LIKE, IF-
WHAT I THINK WOULD HAVE WORKED BETTER, was if she wasdropped back off, early in the season  and graham and ryan continued to travel with her (given they have a stronger reason to) then, maybe, graham decided to step back off and yaz came in again and her and ryan got go go around with the doctor for a season whilst still popping into see graham every so often (like once o twice in a season). LIKE I JSUT THINK that- she isnt... getting the love she so desereves, quite like with the doctor, and i really want her to. HONESTLY, a lot of the focus does feel... in terms of EMOTIONS to be weighing on graham and ryan, and im not mad at that at all like. our second black companion in a row?? wand not only that, but a disabled black man, who explores more sensitive subjects- THAT IS GOOD, AND PLEASE DONT TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME, BUt. LIKE ITS A LOT... FROM ALL SIDES, and just.... NEXT TIME IT WOULD JUST BE BETTER if it wasnt so many ppl then like. they could aall... just be happy. you know.
