#but no. your antisemitic wizard game is more important to you than not giving money to a transphobe.
"my friends are mad at me bc i bought the terf game :(" good. they should be. have you considered not supporting one of the most outspoken and well known terfs in the western world? i can tell you from experience that it's actually really fucking easy.

Look. I understand feeling nostalgia for Harry Potter. I get nostalgic too sometimes. There is a lot in the books about questioning authority and doing what is right instead of what is easy, and that was an important message for a lot of people. Harry Potter literally made me realise I'm trans myself. You can be nostalgic for a big part of your childhood, that's not a crime.
BUT.
It is literally so easy to be nostalgic about Harry Potter without giving money to the UK's most famous Feminism Appropriating Radical Transphobe, holy shit guys, AO3 is literally right there. There are artists making unofficial fan merch who could use your support way more than a billionaire antisemite who felt she couldn't design a game without including literal blood libel in the plot. It is incredibly easy to pirate PDFs of the books online if you really feel the need to reread them and don't have your own copy.
"oh but I want to play the wizard game" literally fuck right off there are a million other games featuring wizards the purchase of which will not see royalties donated to anti-trans groups and from what I hear most of them also have better graphics and plots. Either do this one very easy thing (don't buy the new Harry Potter video game) or stop calling yourself an ally of trans and jewish people and admit to yourself that you're cool with transphobia and antisemitism if it's packaged in Which House Are You In? quiz paper. Jesus fucking Christ.

Honest Question, I swear I’m not trying to start shit (love your stuff honestly): Given that JK gets not royalties from sales and had next to no input on the game is it really worth killing other people’s joy? I understand if you don’t want to take part yourself but why the bashing of those who just want to reenjoy one of the few positive aspects of their childhood?
So since this is an honest question I'll give an honest answer. This is going to sound harsh but I'm just trying to be straightforward about the issue.
JK Rowling always has input over Harry Potter. The story that she had next to no input on the game is something I don't believe.
But even if JK Rowling had no input on the game, she still makes money off it. She DOES get royalties from the sales, she is the owner of the Harry Potter IP.
But even if JK Rowling made no money on the game, she uses any support of Harry Potter as support of her worldviews.
But even if that weren't true, the lead game designer is an anti-social justice nut job who referred to the Me Too era as a moral panic.
But even if he wasn't involved, the game itself is problematic as hell. The goblins in Harry Potter have long been seen as an antisemitic stereotype of Jewish people, with their design echoing Jewish caricatures. In the game, the goblins steal Wizard children and take their blood. This is verbatim Nazi propaganda about Jewish people from WW2. The goblins are basically a marginalized class in the Harry Potter universe while also being vilified, and your job in the game is to keep them oppressed. Also you have a house elf which is just a slave.
At the end of the day though, trans people - and plenty of other marginalized people - have said that supporting this game hurts them. Not just metaphorically, it supports a real life bigot with real life influence. And when someone still engages with the game, the message it sends is that enjoying a video game is more important to them than supporting marginalized communities. And that kinda sucks.

The thing that really sucks (as a trans person) is that after 7 movies, fuck even after the 8th one, JK rowling could have just kept her mouth shut, and left a legacy. I loved harry potter, i grew up with it, the world of magic and wizards and all these cool new fantasy ideas, i wanted to go to the theme park so badly- and then she decided leaving that legacy wasn’t good enough. She had to start being vocal about her views on the real world, poisoning everything she created, ruining the magic by making it very clear that she’s a Bigot and a transphobe and an antisemite while at the same time, instead of letting this creation rest, making more and more and poisoning everything with her bigotry in new very obvious ways, and frankly, ruining everything. You either ran to get your tattoos covered, removed your house from your bio, cried over the betrayal of a childhood hero turning out to be someone who would disrespect or even hate you in real life, and threw out or tucked your merch in the back of the attic, OR you saw her tweets that she takes financial support as support of her views and decided you were special and didn’t care because you couldn’t let go to the point that playing a video game that put money directly into the pocket of a person with real life harmful influence was more important than listening to your trans friends, or your jewish friends, or the many people begging you to not actively give to a bigot and prove her right to herself. It doesn’t matter if you *say* you don’t support her if you actively support her financially by buying into every new thing she makes for something that should have simply ended because *you* can’t let go of something that was created by an openly terrible person. I don’t care how much you loved harry potter as a child -i loved it too- you need to get a reality check and realize your blind support does real actual harm to real people, through bolstering the confidence of a bigot who’s trying to *actively* effect policy regarding trans people in the UK. You’re hands aren’t clean.

as the release date for the new hp game gets closer, remember the jewish and trans activists / creators who asked us not to purchase the game and support jkr and anything hp any longer.
please, find a new thing to support. jkr is rich white woman who continually puts her money behind people and organizations who actively harm marginalized communities, especially the trans community.
jewish creators asked us to not support the game due to the antisemitic goblin uprising antagonistic plot. every use of goblins in her world has been harmful antisemitic stereotypes.
trans creators asked us not to support the game because of jkr's blatant transphobia.
the people who worked on this game have already been paid. it's not like they'll be paid after release. they already made their money and are usually paid a flat rate, so they won't be making more. but jkr will continue to get money from sales. stop making a transphobic awful woman richer bc you can't let go of a mediocre wizard story.
i used to be a huge hp fan. but the minute i heard from trans people that her platform was actively harming their community, i stopped supporting her. trans lives and safety are more important than your hogwarts house and patronus. you can just as easily find stories and fandoms to replace hp. stop giving jkr your money and start caring about trans people, jewish people, and people who exist at those intersectionalities.
