I don't get what you're saying at all so I'd appreciate an explanation.

lol sorry, I breezed right over that because I've talked about it before and I have a tendency to forget that no one's read everything I've ever posted.

So basically

a) Guts leaving the Hawks was a Bad Decision in the manga. If you don't agree then this requires an essay behind it, so voila, here's that essay.

b) The anime portrayed it as a Good Decision for Guts, something he needed to do in pursuit of a noble, worthwhile goal.

The anime does this by changing a few key moments. One obvious one I always cite is the scene at Godo's, when Guts does his waterfall log exercise. In the manga this scene occurs in flashback after Wyald knocks him unconscious. Erika tells Guts he's going to die if he continues on the path he's going, and asks why tf he's doing this to himself. Guts basically says he has to get strong enough to defeat Zodd. End scene.

This contextualizes Guts' dream of sword swinging as an irrational need to defeat the guy who beat him. His goal is to fight Zodd again and win. Symbolically, due to the similar imagery they have in Guts' various nightmares and the essential themes of the story, Guts is driven to self-destructively fight monsters because of his csa trauma.

The anime, conversely, turns this moment into the first part of a training montage, dumps the conversation about fighting Zodd, and ends with Guts successfully slicing logs in half, signifying that he's now Strong Enough. It flattens all the nuance and implicit criticism of Guts out and turns it into a typical inspirational shounen moment.

There's also the Guts/Casca sex scene changing from two traumatized and miserable people hooking up ("licking wounds") into a much more cliched and straightforward romantic moment (using Guts' theme as a music cue, cutting out the choking and rape flashbacks and denial ("Don't think about those things right now,") swapping "I don't know if you'll get in the way of what I want to do or the opposite, but I wanna have you a hundred, no a thousand times" with "I don't know what the future will bring, all I know is I want to keep holding you," etc). All this adds up to Guts wanting to leave again with Casca being framed as the happily ever after that got foiled by the Eclipse, rather than part of the bad decision pile up that caused the Eclipse.

Cutting out the night after Guts leaves is another big one, removing Guts reflecting on whether he's making the right decision or whether he's throwing away a home and family based on a meaningless ideal that he can't even fulfill because it's a contradiction ("In the first place I got this idea in my head from hearing Griffith's words. If I hadn't... so can I say I've set out by my own will?") Spoiler alert, it's the second one. This theme is reinforced during the Lost Children Arc, so while it's not the anime's fault it cuts off abruptly, losing most of the Black Swordsman stuff also doesn't help.

The loss of the Wyald sequence in general cuts out so much implicative Guts character stuff - the irrationally driven to fight monsters due to trauma thing I mentioned earlier, but also Casca crying about it indicating that she would not be supportive of his goal if they did go off together, the self-destructiveness of Guts' monster hunting, and the parallels between Guts and Wyald (ie the other Hawks wondering if Guts is human, Wyald's forces being called the Black Dogs).

Even little tiny things like Guts telling Casca to stay back in the torture chamber, phrased as though he wants to spare her the sight of Griffith, rather than like he's irrationally guarding Griffith from anyone's approach, as is the manga vibe:

I don't think these changes are exactly intentional. I think they're mainly for pacing/content reasons - Guts stay at Godo's needed to be fleshed out because now it's half an episode, Guts' rape trauma is cut out so the Guts/Casca scene becomes less complicated, Skull Knight got cut so no long dark night of regretful contemplation, the Wyald sequence is a nightmare of pacing that had to be cut lol, etc. But they all add up to a Guts who is less flawed, less driven by trauma, and more driven by a noble, shounen-esque goal to be the best. It simplifies the story a lot imo, and downplays a lot of what makes Guts' narrative interesting to me.

Based on what I've been hearing?? I think it's highly likely.... unless the execs start to panic after the summer blockbuster film fun is over, and the lull of post-summer films starts to arrive, and TV shows that were SUPPOSED to start their new seasons in the fall now can't premiere. 👀

But it doesn't seem too likely. 😕

I don't think fans realize what it means by they have not even BEGUN to start negotiating on anything yet, and the powers in Hollywood are willing to just bleed everyone dry and let this play out for as long as necessary. 🥴

I think you're right though.... This press tour might have been a tad different anyway cuz Florence would have been there, and so would Austin. Flo and Timmy go way back, so I'm sure some fans would have loved to see them share the interview circuit together with each other again. 😊

But so far, Timmy and Zendaya have been the main ones doing the Dune 2 promoting so far, so I'm sure they would have still been the main focus for the press tour (just a guess 🤷🏾‍♀️).

So I wanted to post this the day it came out but life got in the way, but here it is!

What are your thoughts on Griffith’s potential recovery post torture in a no-eclipse or thwarted-eclipse au? Like, if they successfully escaped the God Hand or something, of course he doesn’t Have to get back to his old self to find some happiness, but supposing that Guts sets out to find a way to undo at least part of the physical damage. Obivously it’s fantasy, so any kind of magical healing could happen simply so long as we decide that it can. But based on canon lore, what are the most interesting options in your opinion?

I actually have a couple of answers to this I've already considered due to fic ideas that never got written lol. The first is basically an AU where there's no Eclipse but everything else is exactly the same, they're on the run from Midland with Griffith post-torture. They run into Puck's magic troupe, since they're in the area, and Puck gives healing Griffith a go. He's able to heal Griffith's like, open wounds/flayed skin for the sake of my peace of mind and germ theory lol, but can't do anything about Griffith's cut tendons or missing tongue. But Puck suggests that if they meet a witch she might be able to help.

So they go out to try to find a witch. During the journey they deal with their issues to some extent, Guts and Casca break up, Griffith accepts his love for Guts despite how much it fucked him over and could still fuck him over, and Guts accepts that even if Griffith doesn't get magically healed he wants to stay with Griffith forever and he'd be happy to hang up his sword to take care of him.

So they find a witch and she can't heal Griffith either lol because tendons can't just be knit back together bc of their elasticity yadda yadda yadda medical excuses, but she makes them those magic rings that the RPG group uses during the troll fight so they can communicate freely and easily.

I'm into this idea as an alternative to magic healing that's still a pretty good like, magical disability aid that would help Griffith a lot and fits as a narrative reward for dealing with their shit.

The other idea is that the behelit is Guts' rather than Griffith's but it's just an apostle behelit not a godhand behelit, so Guts sacrifices the Raiders for the power to fix his mistake and becomes a monster with magic healing abilities, and heals Griffith.

But this idea is very dark and fucked up so healing Griffith just means Griffith feels obligated to go back to self-destructively pursuing his dream, now with an incredibly powerful monster to help him take over Midland by force through inciting rebellion to make it possible. And apostle Guts is even more intensely obsessed with Griffith because he's the fixation he became a monster for, and Griffith is obsessed with Guts extra hard after the year of torture, and Guts is now sociopathic, and Griffith is super traumatized, and it's just a gigantic mess all around.

I have a more thorough write up of this idea here with a followup here if you're interested in more. It's less about the specifics of the magical healing and more about the fall-out of Griffith being fully healed after the year of torture.

If you could end berserk with either griffith and guts killing each other or guts joining griffith, which one would you choose? There's romance and poetry in both scenarios

Yeah ia, either would be great. Honestly this is tricky lol. I mean if it was fic I think I’d say Guts not exactly joining Griffith but taking off together with him. Guts has gone berserker and murdered his rpg group and lost his revenge boner bc he’s in no place to judge anymore. Griff upon being made undeniably aware that his feelings still exist goes for broke, knowing how hard he fucked himself last time, and decides to just embrace it this time. God told him he can do whatever he wants, and this is what he actually wants.

So if Guts is at his side he can go ‘ok I’ve achieved my dream and now I can do something else’ and hand the utopia off to Charlotte. I’m sure there’s a handwavy explanation for the apostles not turning on everyone once he leaves. Maybe they only need his presence anywhere in the world to be good.

So Griff meets Guts somewhere and is like ‘hey so I lied that time on the hill of swords‘ and Guts is like fuck it this might as well happen, and they go off into the dragon-filled world to be monstery humans or humany monsters together.

BUTTTTT I don’t think I would actually choose that as the canon ending, because like... idk, I really want them to kill each other lol. I mean maybe if I had total creative control in this hypothetical I might go with it. But if this is a hypothetical where Miura’s writing it and I’m just picking the direction for the ending to go, then I’d definitely opt for both of them killing each other.

Like I think it’s where the story was going, and it’s an ending I really did want to see Miura write. It could be really satisfying thematically and on a character level, it could bring a lot of things full circle, and ultimately I think the most appropriate way for Guts’ story to end is with his death. He’s been living his life by throwing himself into mortal danger and fighting his way out by the skin of his teeth, ie death-seeking, so imo his two narratively-fulfilling options are to grow out of that by addressing his issues and becoming emotionally healthier, and settle down to live a quiet domestic life, or to finally throw himself into danger he can’t struggle his way out from and “die smiling.” The former is pretty much out of the question because we know Guts was going to backslide thanks to mountains of foreshadowing and also I don’t want it anyway because it would necessarily mean getting over Griffith.

And I think having Griffith focused on him and seeing a glimpse of his not actually frozen love would be just the thing to get him to die with a smile on his face - tho ofc it would also be a tragic death, like there would have to be a strong sense of regret and lost chances etc too imo.

And it just feels right for them to have one last brief glimpse of their emotional connection before dying. Like, at least for me, the ending where they get back together raises too many questions about how the fuck they exist in relation to each other now. I like the idea of ending with them going off together, but I can’t imagine what that would look like day to day lol. Same with Guts joining him in Falconia or whatever, it’s like... awkward to think about to me, yk? I like the conclusiveness of them dying a little better, I think.
