#but thats very different from simply recreating something as a form of practice

I honestly hate the moral policing that I constantly see around art. I saw a person looking through their old sketchbook and calling a piece their "art theft era". Like are you not still creating? Is that not beautiful, to recreate what has already been made?
I hate how art has become so detached from the joy of making something simply to see it go from incomplete to complete. It's becoming something you can steal only because it's seen as a way to gain money or exposure. If you're not using it for either of those things, is that still theft? To recreate something simply because you like it or to hone your skills?

So I have this theory forming in my head.
There are three types of "people" (were talking about hobbies here, specifically things that might be considered crafting, but crafter is on of the types so...)(im going to use bicycling as an example though)
The "Out of Necessity" People, who pursue the hobby out of necessity. These are people who craft because it provides a basic necessity for the household. They do their hobby "on the cheap" but not as a moral statement, they do it that way because thats the only way to do it. And they pursue their hobby in preference of other less available options. They are highly skilled at their hobby, since they do it as a necessity it is something they have done with frquencey. The final product must be of high enough quality to be useful and should last as long as possible (so they have time to produce other necessities instead of recreating the same thing over and over). This results in longlived pieces that are passed down through the generations. In short they are highly skilled, produce quality, practical work, and do so "on the cheap" from whatever they have easy access to. (In bicycle terms: this is someone who found a cheap bike and rides it to work because they don't own a car)
The second group is "the crafters". Crafters pursue their hobby for the fun of it. They enjoy the process more than the final result. They can fall anywhere on the price spectrum when purchasing supplies depending on their personal budget and what they have access to. They are normally entry skill level since they only need to know enough to have fun. The final product is only sometimes of practical use and often of mediocre quality. These pieces often have a limited lifespan and may be frequently replaced. They are not generally passed down unless they have emotional meaning. In short they are low skill, produce mediocre results, but thats okay because they are doing it for the fun of it. (In bicycle terms: this is someone who has a cheap bike that they ride around the neighborhood on sunny days just for the fun of it)
Lastly we have "the Artisans", people create things for the sake of having a beautiful final product that shows off their skill. These are the people who will oNLy work with the highest quality material. They are highly skilled and very serious about their hobby. They produce things that aren't practical but are high quality. The final product may be passed on as a family heirloom and will certainly be carefully cared for during their lifetime. They like to challenge themselves with each new creation. In short, they are highly skilled, willing to pay top dollar for their supplies, and produce high quality but impractical finished pieces. (In bicycling terms: this is the racer with the expensive carbon frame 1/2lb bike that only rides if they are racing or training to race)
Now I'm not a big fan of labeling or categorizing actual people. I think this framework is helpful though in understanding why some people pursue their hobbies the way they do. I for one am a bit of a yarn snob, but and while I understood that some people couldn't afford to be picky about their yarn, it took me a long time to understand why one would buy cheap yarn if they could afford better. Realizing that it was the process of knitting itself that they enjoyed and pursued the hobby for was a bit eye opening. And there are many things in life that I do simply for the joy of it. I'm certainly that way with gardening. I'm sure it confuses people that I don't actually care if get any tomatoes, I just like digging in the dirt.
So while it can be fun to decide which category you fall in, I think it's more important to understand that others may be pursuing the hobby for a different reason than you, and to consider that before making judgements on how they go about it.

If not my surname or my husband’s, could we announce our child after a New Zealand volcano?
Franki Cookney and her husband didnt much like one another surnames, so now theyre having a baby theyve are determined to pick a new one
When my husband, Rob, and I married last year, the question of what to do about our surnames barely participated our debates. We are both scribes, so our figures are on every piece of work we do. That we would save our own seemed a passed. There was just one niggling disbelieve. What would happen if we had children?
I had always had considered that we would just fasten both our identifies on the birth certification, but I knew this didnt quite solve the problem. Whose figure would go first? And which appoint would end up being used?
We could use a double-barrel call, but didnt seem our surnames, Cookney and Davies, gave themselves to hyphenation. Whichever tell you choose, research results is clunky and we were reluctant to saddle a child with it.
We could have just opted whichever call clanged best with our newborn first name. But in that scenario, one parent discontinues up not sharing a surname with their child and neither of us craved that. Plus, Id heard too many tales of mothers being stopped at airfield insurance because the names on their passports didnt accord that of their children.
The conventional option of taking my husbands surname was never on the table. Quite apart from the feminist principle of not was intended to relinquish my identity for his, I wasnt keen on the reputation. Rob supported this and was by no means offended. The misfortune was, he wasnt a fan of my epithet either. Its just a little bit unwieldy, he said. Its almost Cockney but not quite. Youre constantly having to spell it out. We looked at our mothers maiden names and our grandparents names but ever aimed up back in the same situate, feeling that it wasnt equal, that picking one slope of their own families over another wasnt fair.
We hit on the idea of taking a new reputation about a year ago when before our marry we went to write our wills. As we chitchatted to one of the attorneys, it transpired that he and his wife had done precisely this. Theres a fair fragment of admin, but its good, it toils, he said , nodding decisively. Abruptly, it didnt seem so preposterous. This wasnt some foolish uprising or bohemian pretentiousness, this was something solicitors did!
We mooted it with friends, who were largely unfazed. What mention will you go for? was the thing they were most curious about. Good topic. Could we compound the letters of our mentions and make something new, we pondered. Listings were manufactured: Gouges, Cave, Devine, Kinsey, Dacovnicks Cookies? Nothing of them quite hit the mark.
As our bridal drew nearer, we employed the figure recreation on a back burner. But when I became pregnant 3 months later, we were forced to look at developments in the situation afresh and decided to change tacking. How about a lieu? I indicated. Somewhere weve inspected that we adored. A backpacking stint before we got married had left us with slew make their own choices but most sounded fairly bizarre when attached to got a couple of everyday Brits. Rob and Franki Tongariro owned any particular vigor, but identifying yourself after a New Zealand volcano would be ridiculous. And Zhangjiajie might create recollections of spectacular Chinese mountains, but imagine having to sorcery it every time you booked a fuzz appointment or called your internet provider. For a while Salento and Chaltn were on the register, after places available in Colombia and Argentina. But we werent convinced we could pull off the certainly Latino-sounding former and suspected the latter would lead to a lifetime of chastising people who pronounced it Charlton.
Then Rob said, What about Stone Town? The beautiful old-time township of Zanzibar City is where he had asked me to marry him. It instant appeared right. Stone was straightforward but important. It voiced good with both our first name and after a few weeks of trying it on with other calls would work well with almost anything we chose for our child. It was perfect: a solid call( with a potential for puns that was not failed on us) that felt like a constructive solution to our question. We would obstruct our original surnames for wield and accept this new family name for our personal lives.
By law, all you need to do to change your refer is, well, change it. Simply borrowing and using your brand-new reputation is enough. Revising your reports and records, nonetheless, requires a document of proof such as a wedding certificate or, in such cases, a deed canvas. “Were not receiving” official practice of acquiring a deed ballot. You can write one yourself exploiting free templates from the internet, but scarcity of lucidity about the relevant procedures answers in some institutions demanding an original certificate despite the fact that no such concept subsists. You can either fight it out or you can do which is something we did and offer 15 -2 0 for a company such as the Deed Poll Office to draw up the letter on your behalf and etch and stomp it on watermarked paper. Rendered the roster of bodies and organisations you have to notify and the potential polemics over what constitutes an original credential, this seemed a reasonable compromise.
Perhaps “its been” naive, but we didnt expect to meet with fight. Uncertainty, perhaps. Intrigue, for certain. When it is necessary to getting married, we had trenched virtually every habit exiting, forbidding the wedlock itself, and no one had questioned us. Surely this too would be seen as a modern update on an outdated custom-built. But when we announced our decision to our families, the reaction was mixed.
Franki and Rob. Picture: Christian Sinibaldi for the Guardian
While they understood our quandary, the common forbear was that the child would lose the connection to its family history. Try as I might, I cant understand this. To me, family history extends far deeper than ones call. Its in the way we live, our values, the gumption and shared experience passed down through generations. It is part of the storytelling our parents did and its in the floors we, very, “re going to tell” and the beliefs we will share.
Our springs are not in our identifies, they are in our centres. My grandmother, whose surname was Jones, is important to me not because of her identify but because of her enjoy. My great-grandmother, a midwife I never even fulfilled, let alone shared a appoint with, forms a part of my feel of identity. Why? Because of the room my loving mother talks about her, because of the pictures she has decorated in my head of that life, that household, that time.
Interestingly, the mention itself has also testified a sticking point, with a few people commenting that its tolerating. Youre doing this really unusual thing but youve picked a really ordinary epithet, said one colleague, as though by doing something different “weve been” obliged to go the whole hog and call ourselves Rob and Franki Thundercats.
In fact, the accessibility of the epithet was something we thought would help us sell the idea. It turns out “were in” naive there, more. My father, a former primary school teacher, insisted that someone called Stone would be tantalized. Another relative describing him as a dead weight of a name.
In my experience, teenagers will come up with names no matter what. I wasted much of my school years known as Franki Cookie while my given name was regularly elongated to Frankenstein, Frankincense or Frankfurter.
Never tell people your epithet picks in advance, admonished one acquaintance( too late ). Its as if telling parties in advance is inviting a exchange or consultation!
While my familys affections clearly matter to me, I believe she might be right. Eventually, this is our decision, based on our demands, and I hope they will come to see it as a practical and positive step , not an reckless one.
Its almost impossible to get everyone on board, attorney another friend, who changed her surname by deed ballot in 2004. The suggestion upset my grandma but my pa, her son, understood. When I marriage my husband, he took my name. Im still not sure his brother was 100% behind us, but when we had our first son, he was the first to be born into our empire. Im so excited that we are the first in our tree!
This is exactly how I appear. I adoration the idea that our babe will be born into this new, specially opted and carefully thought-out last name. And if one day he or she decides to change it either to something new or to one of our old family names we will fully support that.
Even when you change names, ancestry can still be traced and, if nothing else, I like to think we will be seemed back on as the ones who tried something new; who instead of establishing do with an disappointing place, supposed creatively about how to solve it. Thats their own families legacy Im glad with.

To that recreational angling end, Beijing has come up with the craziest of ideas: a map that it circulates widely of the Asia-Pacific that has a nine or ten-dash line carved into it. On that map, Beijing claims almost 85 percent of the South China Sea, essentially declaring that body of water part of its national territory, something no nation has done in centuries. Such a dream could morph into a nightmare as America has consistently challenged such claims, stating that seas and oceans must remain part of the "global commons" or a common space for all nations. Considering the fundamental differences between these nations the world's two biggest military and economic powers would they go to war over the South China Sea? The answer is simple: yes. Although how it would start would almost certainly be an accident it could happen. Here is a scenario where the unthinkable occurs: A U.S. guided missile destroyer is ordered to conduct what is called a freedom of navigation operation, or FONOP, in the South China Sea. The goal is to challenge Chinese claims of actual sea rights around their newly created islands in the area. The U.S. destroyer travels within eight miles of Woody Island, one of China's most important new bases. Beijing is not amused and was ready for this. Chinese satellites detected the course of the vessel and China dispatches what appears to be 25 fishing vessels. But in reality, these ships are part of the country's maritime militia, thousands of non-naval vessels that Beijing uses to press its claims in the area. Many of these so-called fishing ships have massively reinforced hulls for ramming, their fuel is subsidized by the Chinese government for long-distance travel as well as guided by Chinese-based GPS systems provided by Beijing. The ships are ordered to continually cut in front of the U.S. destroyer, a game of near chicken, all to get the ship to turn around and leave the area.
On the dany of the event, divide people into groups, and give to that part of the forest. Artists conduct various exhibitions, showcasing their cutting-edge their Ship! Tragic, fascinating, bright- living for’ wild infant’ Zelda Fitzgerald revisited
Two movies and a Tv line out soon portray living conditions of the jazz-age novelist and partner of F Scott Fitzgerald
She is thought of as the original wild infant, a pearl-twirling party girl who died at persons under the age of 47 after a flaming broke out in the North Carolina sanatorium where she was a patient. Now Zelda Fitzgerald, the southern belle passed jazz-age protagonist, dubbed the first American flapper by her husband and partner-in-drink Scott, is to have her own Hollywood make-over two cinemas are in the pipeline and a television series will air on Amazon Prime early next year.
All three projections have starry names appended: Jennifer Lawrence will take the lead in Zelda , a biopic directed against Ron Howard and based on Nancy Milfords best-selling biography; Scarlett Johansson will bob her “hairs-breadth” for The Beautiful and The Damned ; and Christina Ricci will play young persons and impetuous Zelda in the Amazon series Z: The Beginning of Everything. The entitlement of the TV sequence comes from Scotts awestruck provide comments on meet Zelda: I adoration her, and thats the beginning and end of everything.
So what is it about Zelda that fascinates virtually 70 times after her regrettable extremity? In persona it is that the agitations the couple lived through find an resemble in our own hectic times.
Interest in the Fitzgeralds will no doubt been on the increase is not simply since Baz Luhrmanns film of The Great Gatsby in 2013 but also from the many latitudes between their lives and wield and the period were living through right now, speaks Sarah Churchwell, author of the critically acclaimed Careless Parties: Murder, Mayhem and The Invention of the Great Gatsby .
Its a storey of thunder and failure and it reverberates as we are grappling with our own boom and bust, our own worries about the costs of our extravagances and our own social failures. Human life and lucks of Scott and Zelda peculiarly simulated their epoches: in the 1920 s they were roaring for all they were value, but with the gate-crash in 1929, everything descended apart.
It helps, too, that Zelda was so vibrant a person. It begins with her attractivenes, says Churchwell. But likewise with the stories told in the 1920 s about the high jinks and recreation she and Scott seemed to have. People really liked her: she was surprising, smart, cunning, funny and adored a good party. She too liked to be the centre of attention, and so had her detractors very. These events combined to manufacture her a legend.
Scott repeatedly returned to their relationship in his story, most notably in his second romance, The Beautiful and Damned , which items the exhilarating early days of their union; and his pensive fourth, Tender Is The Night , in which the gilded fantasy has faded into a more tawdry world. Zeldas only novel, Save Me The Waltz , presented the relationship from her side.
They were arguably Americas first personality pairing: a carefree golden duet who wrote their practice into the spotlight, forming their own myth of gin-soaked dates and fun-filled darkness, merely to remain too long once the light-headed had started to dim. Their recklessness prepares the legend exciting and drastic, speaks Churchwell. But they paid a the highest price.
After a few giddy years, all the youth predict disintegrated away, leaving Scott a stupefied and drunk jobbing hack in Hollywood and making Zelda to breakdown at the age of 30, a diagnosis of schizophrenia , now widely thought to be a bipolar illness, and their own lives in and out of sanatoriums.
Her story is both fascinating and shockings, tells Therese Anne Fowler, on whose novel Z the Amazon series is based. Here we have a woman whose talents and force and ability “shouldve been” represented her a brilliant success, who was determined to be an accomplished creator, columnist and ballet dancer in an period where married maidens were supposed to be partners and babies, season. Her devotion to Scott was, in many ways, her undoing[ although] he was just as imprisoned as she was. Had they adoration one another less, they might both have come to better ends.
The idea of Zelda as a brilliant maiden captured by her meter has gained traction in recent years, with a number of labours re-evaluating her through the prism of feminism although it is not always the easiest of fits. As early as 1974, the couples daughter Scottie withstood such assertions, writing that attempts to vistum her mom as a classic put-down partner, whose efforts to express her sort were frustrated by a often male chauvinist spouse were no longer accurate.
Writing in the New Yorker in 2013, Molly Fischer concurred , noting: Saving Zelda Fitzgerald is no easy proposition …[ she] does not want to be anyones baby, and theres something mortifying about the literary readiness to domesticate her, to change an enraging dame into an appealing heroine.
The new films may well further Hollywoodise Zelda, sanding away her bumpy lines and reinventing her as a relatable heroine for our modern times. The molding of Lawrence so often described as Americas Sweetheart in the Howard biopic is no accident.
A report about the upcoming Johansson film in the Hollywood Reporter recommended it would draw on previously unreleased cloth to indicate that her husband embezzled his wifes ideas as his own.
Mark Gill, chairwoman of Millennium Films, the creation fellowship behind The Beautiful and The Damned , concurs : She was massively ahead of her epoch and she took a lash for it. He embezzled her new ideas and gave them in his volumes. The wedlock was a codependency from hell with a jazz-age soundtrack. The film has, however, procured the co-operation of the Fitzgerald estate.
Fowler agrees that there is a flourishing partiality to exercise our own concerns to Zelda. We do anoint her as a kind of proto-feminist heroine, even though she didnt read herself as a feminist and didnt fully attain at anything, she enunciates. But her original honour is based on conventional paternalistic the terms and conditions of what a woman, father and spouse ought to be and do. Her passions and her insistence on prosecuting them were considered inappropriate and undesirable; after her psychopathic breaking she was literally told that this insistence had created her separate knowledge and that the path to a medicine lay in giving up all ambitions that didnt conform to the paternalistic ideal.
Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lawrence and Christina Ricci are all set to play Zelda Fitzgerald in the forthcoming creations The Beautiful and the Damned, Zelda and Z: The Beginning of Everything. Composite: Getty Images
The backlash against this image is intelligible considering the fact that popular opinion of Zelda was initially driven by Ernest Hemingways notoriously caustic descriptions in A Moveable Feast , produced posthumously in 1964, in which he rejected her as insane and accused Scotts originating dependence on alcohol on his wife.
Our perception has very much changed, enunciates Churchwell. We have come to sympathise with her resentment, to recognise her offerings and to be more fair-minded about her selections. That remarked, she carefuls against attempts to create a Team Scott/ Team Zelda fraction, as is so often the speciman in famous literary partnerships. Its important to say that they always affection each other and wouldnt have appreciated people taking surfaces Fitzgerald wrote a few years before he was dead that it was a moral obligation that their friends understood the latter are a duo, a part and would stay that mode, even if her illness mean they couldnt live together.
Churchwell is also scathing about attempts to suggest Zelda had a larger role in her husbands labour than previously presumed. There are people who want to credit Zelda with Scotts work, which is just silly and doesnt do maidens any promotions, she answers. Its not a zero-sum play: we are in a position recognise both of them for who they were.
Zelda had many talents, but where writing was concerned she was probably more ill when she started to sharpen her endows, and while it is true that Scott didnt particularly want her to write partly out of territoriality but partly because medical doctors told him it was bad for her its also true-life that her work isnt in the same class as his. Her individual sentences are often lovely, and she can create a humor and has clever rotates of word but her wreaks tend to be sketches rather than full floors. If they had constructed different selections, maybe she could have been an important scribe, but the reality is that she wasnt.
Perhaps, then, the true key to Zeldas continued pull on our curiosity lies not in her work but in her modernity. I dont want to live I want to adoration first and live incidentally, she extol and it is that verve and gluttony for all of lifes knowledge, both good and bad, that strains down over the decades, letting each generation to see something new.
Z: The Beginning of Everything will air on Amazon Prime early next year
THEY SAID
I have rarely known the status of women who showed herself so delightfully and freshly: she had no ready-made words on the one side and no striving for impression on the other. Critic Edmund Wilson
I fell in love with her courage, her honesty and her blaze self-respect, and its these happens I would believe in even if the world indulged in wild impressions that she wasnt all that she should be.
F Scott Fitzgerald
I did not have a single apprehension of insignificance, or shyness, or incredulity, and no moral principles.
All I require is to be very young always and very irresponsible, and to feel that my life is my own to live and be happy and succumb in my own space to satisfy myself.
Other publics ideas of us are dependent primarily on what theyve hoped for.
