Reflection
Presenting the IB program to the younger students reminded me of when I was in the second year of high school and the older IB students presented this program to us. It's hard to believe that a year has already passed since then. Talking with other students about this program was interesting, sharing our experiences and trying to explain to them that this is actually very good and definitely worth enrolling. We explained to them that this is a completely different approach to knowledge and in general to the things that surround us. We develop our skills at a higher level, as well as critical thinking and improve our organizational skills. I hope we managed to convince them that this program is worth the effort.

I am begging people on the internet to have a SHRED of critical thinking. I am tired of people cancelling celebrities for ignorant things they said when they were in middle school. A middle schooler. Do people not realize that you can’t hold a CHILD to the standards of an adult?? I mean what world have we come to where a CHILD whose brain has barely begun developing is not allowed to make mistakes, and is then held to their errors for the rest of their adult life? For fucks sake we ALL said shitty things in middle school and you know it. Don’t even pretend like one person didn’t say weird things at that age, we were kids, for fucks sake I was still playing with American girl dolls. I’m convinced that people who try to cancel grown ass adults for things they did as children have never worked with kids once in their life or had a younger sibling. Like have you MET a 12-14 year old? They’re idiots. I work with kids and half the things they say on a daily basis are practically incoherent. It’s also worth mentioning that children mostly only have the opinions of their parents. I was raised in a Catholic household so I grew up thinking it was wrong to be gay and denying my sexuality, guess what now I’m liberal as fuck, hate the Catholic Church and I’m bisexual. You have to allow people to grow up and form their own opinions. The internet seems to have forgotten that people are multi-faceted individuals who grow and change over time. And we have to allow for that, people are going to make mistakes it’s called being human. It’s about growth, not perfection. Cancel culture has gotten so weird, like it used to be about pointing out genuinely hateful things they adults said and now it’s “Johnny used to call me gay when we were ten so he’s a horrible person even though he’s 30 now and married to a man” like can we all use critical thinking skills please. I’m so tired of people not having a single shred of common sense like some of y’all need to get off the internet for a longgggg time until you can think straight again.

Hi! I hope you are doing well!
I would like to join your game!
Your reading:
Your fs will be older than you (might be a 2/3 years age gap), this person will help you a lot with something you are dealing emotionally/mentally?
Spirits are not telling me much about it, but they will be extremely helpful with you self worth and growth, you could meet in autumn (like end of September/start of October).
it’s going to be a bit unexpected but there could be a third part in this meeting whether you are with a friend or them, but this third part will be the reason you meet cause that might know them. I don’t know if you believe in love at first sight but that a repetitive theme coming here.
I see this as friendship to lovers and a slow burn one, it will take a while for you two to realize the feelings you have for each other and there could be someone here a bit in denial at first? Maybe scared of being rejected, and having to start a relationship from the start? Getting heartbroken vibes from this.
It’s definitely a fated meeting, everything will feel like it’s just perfect, but there is a lot of healing to do for you to find this person, i get “you have to forgive yourself” a lot , leave the past there and push forward cause only good things are coming even if you may view them in a negative light
This is what I could get, hopefully you can resonate with it!
Take care!
Initials: DK
Hey! Thanks for that! Here's your reading.
Your position: The emperor rev, 10 of Pentacles, Ace of Cups, Knight of Swords rev.
I see you being a vocalist, but I'm not seeing a major position. Like probably sub vocalist? I feel like you're the type that has a strong tone. You know the saying "this person sings like they've been through 10 divorces and 15 heartbreaks"? Yeah people will really connect with your way of singing. Also, you'd be the member that is a bit reckless? Like the ones that are known to spoil the group comebacks and can be quite mischievous and all that (reminds me a bit of Niki here). However, behind all that you still care for your members, it's just your own way of showing it to them!
Your reputation: 6 of Wands, 9 of Cups, Knight of Pentacles rev, 8 of Wands rev.
So the good of this is people will see you as someone that is confident in themselves and their skills. They have lots of charm and can attract people. Someone that likes comfort and doesn't like the harder parts of life. You could also be sassy as well? Like having snarky comebacks towards haters and all that (Shuhua). On the bad note, people could feel that your too reckless and it could affect your group. Maybe you have a way of saying things that people will find "rude". Also that people will think you're not putting much effort. (Lazy dancing accusations?). Also that you're too cocky and arrogant in some people's eyes.
Your scandals: 3 of Pentacles, Justice, The Hierophant, 2 of Cups rev
Possible scandals that you'll end up having to deal with is not letting your other members shine. People will think that you care about yourself and that you try to "steal the spotlight from others". You'd also be criticized for not fitting the cookie cutter image of the industry and that you're "too westernized". Also that you don't respect the traditions? (Ex, not "bowing" to your seniors, not using proper ways to address them, etc). I see you getting accusations of "being hard to work with too" and that you have an attitude.
Your life as an idol: 7 of Swords, 6 of Cups, The Moon, 5 of Cups.
Ok if you were an idol, I see your time being full of sadness and mixed feelings. You'll feel like you're being "too fake" and you can't express yourself the way how you want to. You'll be frustrated that you can't be your true self and all of the negativity will really get to you and hurt your confidence. This will lead you to feeling confused about yourself and will cause you to have an identity crisis. However, you'll definitely have memories that will make you smile when you look back at your time being an idol in the industry.

Summative Assessment Compulsory Question 2: Connect CTS A to all your other modules (and components)
CTS has really enhanced a lot of my skills that are useful in multiple modules. For example, critical thinking is something I use every day, from thinking out of the box during craft so as to make my design unique to understanding different ways to compose my photos to show key ideas such as movement, rhythm and even time. CTS has enhanced my critical thinking and has made me more creative, reflective and adaptable to different situations and challenges I face on a daily basis.
On the other hand, collaborative communication skills are equally important, we communicate with people from all walks of life every day and as we work in the studio we want to have a conducive environment free of conflict which is where emotional intelligence and relationship building come into play.
Self-management is important as well as the exams in Lasalle work by doing different projects for 14 weeks before finally submitting it over to the teacher to show what we have done. Managing our time to work a little on our project every day is a must instead of leaving everything to the last moment.
However, although self-management is important, I believe that learning about a growth mindset during CTS is the most important of all. Coming to an art school, there are many things that I have never done before such as using Adobe, rotoscoping, being extremely creative in craft and composing photos to invoke a certain feeling or meaning. Success or failure depends on our mindset. Having a growth mindset allows me to persevere and give it a try even if it is hard. I would constantly go to my lecturers and ask for feedback on how to improve and make my work better. Without having a growth mindset, I would have never put in as much effort as I have in work and maybe even cause myself to give up because I just don’t know how to do anything.
Now going more in depth on how CTS connect with other modules. I feel that week 3 studio, research frameworks, is probably one of the activities where I made use of most of the things I’ve learned in CTS. Firstly, critical thinking, I had no clue where to start, my quote was complicated and I could not connect it to anything. Critical thinking allowed me to analyse the situation and that is when my research began. I started looking through Google, Pinterest, art websites and anything I could find to link the quote and although I did find some artists and their work I just pasted them in and said a few words to connect the quote. Although it looked nice visually, inside it was like a skeleton.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, after consulting with Timmothy, my studio lecturer, I understood the brief from his point of view. This involved communication skills and self-awareness that my old work was not up to standard and that I needed to do something about it. This is where the growth mindset came in, at first I didn’t really feel like doing everything again as I had already spent so much time, however, I felt like this was an opportunity to improve myself so I took a small break before starting back from scratch and through perseverance and a lot research and citation skills learned from CTS, I worked on my project once again and now it is not only visually appealing but there is sufficient content deeper behind the pictures, showing my thinking process, the sites and videos I got my ideas from and how it all connected back to the quote.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CTS has helped me to grow into a designer with a strong foundation of basic soft skills and has helped me to be more resilient against challenges and has made me more open-minded about learning and to constantly improve myself. The process may be an arduous and hard journey however what I have to reap in the end will be something worth the hundreds of hours that I have put in, not only the finishing products but the skills and experience that I have gone through to become a greater person.

Who are you now, and where is your confidence coming from? How is it affecting your confidence and behavior? *Theatre edition*
When it comes to being confident in my abilities at Theatre - I always need to feel like I know as much as I can about something to feel confident at it. I need to practice as much as I can, read as much as I can, and so on. It's a pretty great trait to have most of the time, but it also does make me worry and think that I'm not prepared if I don't do that, even when a lot of the time I'm able to handle things without too much trouble. Since 2016 it's always been about the next show. One show ends and it's off to the next one. Of course, I'm improving and trying to pickup things that will help me improve over time -
but my confidence never grew in comparison to my challenge.
As I improved, I did harder things, did more complicated shows, expected more of myself in terms of where I stand. So even though I was improving, I never really got time to celebrate how far I've come, because I was using the next challenge to help me grow, using the fear of not feeling up to scratch to drive me to improve. These last few months have been very different from how I've lived the last few years. As I prepare to leave for my 1 year Masters in the UK. I haven't been planning another show - in contrast, I've actually been having quite a theatre detox. Which feels like has given me some perspective.
I've learned to not give power to those who don't deserve it. There are always going to be naysayers and negativity whenever you do something worth while. My mistake was looking towards a critical group of artists for validation for my own skills. Art in itself seems to bring about insecurity in a lot of people. It appears in me - wanting to seek validation from others. It appears in others - wanting to put down others to make yourself feel more validated.
And in a way, I'm growing to love and feel for my fellow artists for that. They wear their heart and feelings on their sleeves, the care and love for their craft creates these strong emotions. They're just humans too. I myself have always had a purpose for each show I've done. And I will continue to focus on that purpose, hoping that my feelings reach the audience and those who take part in my shows. And only give the power to affect my emotions to those who I love. At least that's what I'll try to do anyway. Who are you now?
I'm someone who knows his purpose. I want to create positive ripples through my work. To inspire, to create a safe heaven, to create growth, to create love and bonds. Where is your confidence coming from? My confidence comes from understanding that I don't have to be perfect. I don't have to be better than everybody else all the time at my craft. It's strange, but accepting my flaws and weaknesses almost makes me more confident in my strengths. I know I have so much left to grow, and that I'm putting myself in the right situations to do that, and more importantly. That I know what I'm doing it all for. How is it affecting your confidence and behavior?
Light. I feel lighter. I can imagine a day in the future when I'm back in the whirlwind of a theatre show in Colombo, hearing this and that, going through the motions. But I hope that I'll be able to center myself on what I truly value in those times. There is also confidence and happiness to be gained in knowing that this one thing is not my entire life too. For a long time I made myself believe that my identity as a theatre director was my entire being, but I've also rediscovered my love for friendships, relationships and genuine connections with others.
And that is something that I want to carry forward with me, and something that I believe can help me create more beautiful art in the future.

fandom advice from someone who has been an active participant since the 90s*:
*- I am aware some folks have been active in fandom since long before that, you pedants don’t need to crawl out of the woodwork at me.
* * *
Learning to shut up/not say something is a very valuable skill, and it’s #1 on this list because I like dramatic irony. You don’t always have to comment on something that upsets you, even if/when you are right to do so. Sometimes you need to realize even if/when you are justified and correct, it’s better to just... stop. Learn to pick your battles. Most hills are not worth dying on whether you’re in the right or not, and that’s something that I’m still learning to keep in practice. But trust me: It is well worth the effort and it will cut down 90% of the drama in your fandom life, and life in general.
Try to step back and reread someone’s comment or whatever in good faith, not bad. Stop assuming the absolute worst of everyone around you. Even when someone says something stupid, going at them with pitchforks and torches is going to do nothing but cause unnecessary public drama and misunderstandings. Are some people worth calling out publicly? Sure! And are many others putting their foot in their mouth and don’t need to be pilloried? Absolutely! I don’t know how to tell you all this, but many of us, especially fandom folks in their 30s/older are still working on un/re-wiring some old shitty microaggressions and patterns of behavior. No, the time you grew up in isn’t “an excuse”, it doesn’t make Saying the Stupid Thing unhurtful; and yet, dogpiling someone who otherwise has a chill track record still makes you an asshole. You can’t say “intention doesn’t matter” and then publicly lambast someone for a recent Tweet they didn’t think enough about making. Don’t get me started on people freaking out over Tweets someone made 7-15+ years ago. There was a LOT of cultural change in the 2010s, please allow people to have personal growth and move the fuck on.
If you have a problem with something someone has done/said, once or twice or several times, but they appear to have a decent track record otherwise? JUST TALK TO THEM. Send them a DM. Be like, “hey, I noticed [x thing]. [x thing] was [hurtful/upsetting/disappointing] to see because [y reason(s)]. I feel this could have been [handled/said/expressed] better. Are you willing to talk about this? Thanks for listening.” Yeah sure there will be people who react poorly--and I guarantee you, there will also be plenty of people who genuinely don’t want to be hurtful to others either.
Learn how to apologize graciously. No matter what your intentions were, and even if someone is reacting very strongly to something seemingly innocuous--learn to apologize. Swallow your pride. Even if someone is being rude, and shitty, sometimes all they want to hear is an acknowledgement of their sense of having been done wrong. The best you can do is offer something along the lines of, “I am sorry [person’s name/handle], I’m sorry that what I [wrote/said/did] was [hurtful/harmful] to you. I’ll do my best to avoid [writing/saying/doing] [thing] again, and I’m open to feedback if you have any on what I could’ve done better. Thanks again for reaching out to me about this.” It shows that you’ve taken the time to sympathize with how they’re feeling, you’re not making excuses or making it all about you/your feelings, you redirect the conflict into a positive forward progression, and finally, you show graciousness and thank someone for their time, humanizing their efforts.
Learn how to accept people’s apologies. Don’t be a nitpicky asshole. (See advice #1 & #2.) Sometimes you need to thank someone for their apology, mayhaps offer critcism as calmly/constructively as you can if they ask for it, and then step away. Also, if they don’t ask for criticism, don’t dump an essay of it onto them. You can even offer to give it to them with the caveat that it will only happen once you and they have had a chance to cool off and mull things over. Not all conflicts need to be resolved in the immediate moment and most of them CAN’T be anyway.
Try to understand that even if you do your best at all of the above, sometimes people will never be happy, and you are allowed to calmly take your leave from situations once you have communicated to the best of your ability. Then refer to advice #1.
Remember when engaging in disk horse/discussions to consider the “yes, and...” principle: listen to and get on the same page with their line of thinking, then expand upon it so you don’t leave the other person hanging, or leave them with the burden of the discussion, or give the impression of shutting the discussion down. If you don’t understand a person’s line of thinking, then ask for clarification. Conversations/discussions are just two people writing a back and forth dialogue and what makes conversing more difficult than writing a script (ime) is you don’t know what the other person is thinking, so you need to do your best to communicate as deliberately and levelly as you can. There is a progression to talking to people and should be a forward movement. If someone says, “I think it’s interesting how many wars the United States has had with its current allies” and you reply, “The American Continental Army fought the British in the American War of Independence”... that... doesn’t offer anything, there is no movement, and seemingly you have failed to give the other person the benefit of the doubt that the AmRev is one of those wars to which they referred. Now you’ve left them with the awkward burden of trying to redirect the conversation or just disengaging entirely. A better way to respond would have been, “Yeah, absolutely! I’m interested in the American Revolution in particular” which first shows that you have listened to what they said, enough to pull a specific thread from their thought, and now you have expanded on it by relaying one of your own thoughts/feelings which will give the other person incentive to either say something about that war, or to ask you their own questions. In short: You have showed someone that you heard them, and are now giving something in return for them to expand upon. It’s the difference between talking with someone and AT them, and doing too much of the latter can be extremely offputting for everyone around you.

Life goes on, in and out of comfort zones
I remember when my trainer asked me a clinical question that I didn’t know the answer to, and I hated myself and couldn’t stop dwelling on how stupid I was for a long time, to the point where I even clearly remember that low feeling now nearly a year later. I had known the answer if you had asked me prior to the end of residency, but then I took a vacation and forgot the answer during that vacation, and that’s where I hate myself, that I once knew and had forgotten. I played Secret Hitler tonight with friends, and thrice I made mistakes that I really shouldn’t have. And I feel so stupid for making stupid decisions while playing the game, for not thinking straight and having lapses in strategy. I can blame it on the drinks I had for preventing me from thinking my logic through, but I still feel like an absolute idiot. But I need to remind myself that if I think back very deeply, there WERE times I was proud of myself at my clinical knowledge and how I performed, like during residency interviews, APPEs, residency, etc. It’s just that I have to think really hard to recall praise for myself because the feeling of lacking oppressively overshadows memories of those times I did well. And I need to focus on the fact that I was playing Secret Hitler against mostly people who had played this game a good number of times before and are all very smart, while I had only played this game once, which was ~4 or more years ago and haven’t played any social deception game in over 3 years. Yet I just kept dwelling tonight on how much I sucked at that game compared to the other 7 people at the table.
I may not be as good at this game, and therefore may lack speed of reasoning/logic and lying skills. Multiple papers and essays of mine have been used by multiple English professors as top examples for my peers, and yet while others may have deemed me above average in one skill, it’s not enough for me. I dislike feeling so inferior in a different skill; I feel like I need to excel all-around. It’s not a healthful mentality. I need to forgive myself for my shortcomings, but instead, they haunt me. I picture making stupid moves over and over again.
In dance, there are some weeks I feel so down about myself. At work, training so many new and different pediatric shifts and going to so many simulation pediatric and neonatal code experiences and staffing all these new shifts solo and then feeling hypercritical of my performance is one of the biggest stressors and overarching themes I’ve been experiencing in the past year. But learning and success are what happen when I fall over and over again and still get up every time. As a reaction to my failures, I feel like hiding under a rock or not posting anything because simply making myself visible is to invite scrutiny. If I think others are critical of me, then I can stay in my comfort zone by being merely a spectator instead of performer. Spectating is safe. I could disappear and make no noise. But I still keep forcing myself to go to dance and attending pediatric codes and being thrown into new shifts. I oughta trust myself that I’m strong enough to handle the trials and tribulations and risk of humiliation because overall it will be worth it. Just try to prove to myself that I will become better from yesterday’s mistakes and I’m just trying to outcompete my former self. Also, if I continuously put myself in settings where everyone around me is far better than me, I will repeatedly feel far inferior and inadequate, but that growth (while feeling very shitty) is better than being safe.

7 Best Parenting Tips for Preschoolers (3–5 Years Old)
Tumblr media
Children between the ages of three and five who attend preschool need extra attention and supervision. Here is some parenting advice for young children that you may utilise to encourage their growth.
Appreciate them
Gratify them for their hard work. By praising them, you may increase their sense of assurance and self-worth, which is essential for enabling them to lead better and more fulfilling lives. Inform them calmly and without raising your voice if they do something improperly. Negative effects will result if you yell at your youngster. If you use foul words or hurtful statements, it will affect and unsettle their brain Furthermore, children who grow up in homes where the parents constantly yell are more likely to have poor consciousness or experience more desperation.
2. Talk with them
Talking to your child in whole sentences and using language appropriate for adults will aid in the development of strong language skills. Help him use the proper words and expressions. Science has demonstrated that a toddler’s brain continues to function at its highest level throughout his or her life. Try to converse with them more frequently at this time in order to help them grow a robust vocabulary when they get older.
Babies use vocalization to communicate a wide range of wants and feelings.
For older children, questions are a helpful learning tool. Keep in mind to emphasise certain ideas that you wish to instil in children as you try to reply to their questions.
3. Make them disciplined
One of the most important parenting advice for toddlers is this. Create rules that are distinct from one another and that your children can follow. Make sure to communicate these rules in a way that is appropriate for their age. Children should learn appropriate behaviour and self control through punishment. Don’t be excessively rigorous when teaching your youngster suitable social skills. Encourage them to grow up to be capable, useful individuals. Setting limits and persistently upholding them form the foundation of successful discipline.
4. Set up a daily schedule
Routines increase predictability in a child’s environment and help them learn routine occurrences, processes, and self-assigned expectations. For varied activities like playing, eating, snacking, sleeping, etc., the two of you must adhere to a set routine. It will aid in your time management efforts and teach your youngster discipline in addition to helping you.
5. Storytelling or reading
Reading helps people communicate and develops a variety of other talents, including creativity, critical thinking, emotional maturity, and problem-solving. Small children might not feel comfortable sitting still for a long time. To make kids more interested in reading stories, begin by reading or telling them tales for just five minutes each day.
6. Jolly them up
Pre-schoolers need to be physically active for at least four hours every day. Join your child in some games. Give your child age-appropriate playthings like softballs or toy bats. Playing benefits children and teenagers’ cognitive, physical, social, and mental health.
7. Limit usage of gadgets
Today’s kids spend most of their time on technology, including computers, smartphones, TVs, and other devices. Children who use electronics excessively may spend less time outside and interacting with others. Limit their daily time spent on devices to 1–2 hours to help them focus more on their other skills.
Conclusion
In conclusion, we can say that the aforementioned parenting advice is beneficial for pre-schooler’s behavior and general development. Be sure to listen carefully to your child when you are speaking with them. If you maintain open communication with your child, the two of you will get along better.
Provide them with calm instructions and make sure they comprehend them rather than reprimanding them for their errors. These parenting essentials can help you overcome some common obstacles, help you feel more confident as a parent, and enjoy your child’s development.

I think you’re really telling on yourself if you react with upset and anger and denial when faced with evidence against something you do or believe in, and instead of thinking “hmm, am I feeling angry or upset when faced with concrete facts against something I think is ok? maybe I should look deeper into myself to fix that and experience Growth”, you yell “NO, you cant CONTROL me, Im gonna do what I WANT to do, and you CANT stop me”

Make It Mean Something - Making PC deaths meaningful to the other players
Tumblr media
Hullo, Gentle Readers. Sometimes the dice are not in a player’s favor. Sometimes three death saves come up awfully fast. Sometimes a death happens, and everyone’s sitting around the table uncertainly, not sure how to react. It is that moment that daddydeputy raised in their Question from a Denizen. They asked if I had any thoughts on “How to make pc deaths more impactful and growthful for the others (and perhaps themselves?)”
DD, it’s a tricky balance to strike. On the one hand, you want the game to have real and dangerous consequences for the actions the characters take. On the other hand, the death of a beloved character can really upset a player or even crash a whole campaign. My players are very mature and accepting of the consequences (although they’ll pull out all the stops to try and stop it from happening to one of their own), but not everyone can be, even if they say they are. Sometimes you don’t know how the death of a character is going to affect you until it happens. I think of myself as a very mature player, but if a character as dear to me as Skittle, my mouse pooka from Changeling the Dreaming, died, I suspect I’d be devastated.
Some campaigns have a very revolving door attitude towards death. Oh, you died? Here’s a revivify spell, or a raise dead spell, or what have you. Other make it harder, possibly keeping those spells out of the hands of the players or requiring skill challenges for raising the dead (a la Critical Role). I suspect DD is wanting to lean more towards the latter, so let’s look at some ways to really make death matter.
Run lower-level campaigns: At low levels, death is a lot more difficult to overcome. By the time you get your fallen friend to a temple, the window for Revivify is long over, and who can afford the diamond for a Raise Dead spell, even assuming you can find a cleric who can cast it for free for you? But most NPC temples I’ve run in my games have been willing to cast Raise Dead for free if the PCs will undertake a quest on behalf of the temple. In a situation like this, the dead PC’s player could potentially play a cleric or paladin of the temple sent along to help, or the temple might cast raise dead in advance and take an oath that they will fulfill the quest. If the temple doesn’t trust them to keep their word, there are always geas spells to make sure of it.
Limit access to spells that return the dead: Maybe not every god grants the ability to raise the dead to their followers. Maybe diamonds are hard to find in your campaign. Whatever the path you take, you can make certain that death isn’t just a revolving door by making the spells difficult to cast. Maybe the deity will only grant the spells to their cleric once the party fulfills a quest or defeats a monster that has been plaguing the faithful. You could change the material component from a diamond to “the deity’s favor.” Casting the spell expends the favor, so now a new service to the deity would be needed before the next chance of casting it.
Make return from death uncertain: One of the things I really like in Critical Role that I intend to adopt in my next campaign (and I even know how I’m going to make the change make sense in my campaign world) is that returning from death via Raise Dead is by no means a certain thing. The Critical Role has a skill challenge like system in which up to three people can contribute to the ritual to return the dead by entreating the dead person to return. If people all want to use the same skill, such as Persuasion, the DC for the second and third people goes up. A PC might be coaxed to return via Performance, Persuasion, Intimidation, Deception...I’d even allow rolls like Arcana for magically coercing the dead spirit to return or Religion to remind a Paladin that their duty to their deity is not yet fulfilled. This had led to some dramatic moments in CR, and I definitely intend to put together my own system for my next campaign.
Make return from death limited: You could very easily put together a system that limited the number of times the same spirit could return from the dead. In older editions of D&D, returning from death required a “System Shock” check, and the body might not survive the attempt to reunite it with its spirit. If you wanted something similar, you could make a system in which one of your attributes represents your ability to return from death, even using Revivify. I would like base it off of your Constitution or Charisma score. You can return from death a number of times equal to 1+your Constitution or Charisma modifier (minimum of 1). That way, characters can die at least once and come back, but it can’t happen dozens of times.
Make the way someone dies directly affect their afterlife: For some players, this will really matter. I once had a ranger who despised dragons in a campaign. He found a dragonslaying sword, made it his business to get the party to face dragons, etc. When he finally died, it was facing two dragons to buy the party time to escape from a canyon where the dragons were in danger of TPKing them. He was killed, but he wounded both dragons quite a bit. The party managed to kill them, and they recovered the body. The ranger’s player absolutely had no intention of coming back from the dead. “How on earth would my character have a cooler death than that?” the player laughed. “That was perfect.” I described how he was received into the afterlife of his culture as a hero, and he was very happy with the end of the story for his ranger. To draw this along further, what if how a PC dies affects their standing in the afterlife? If they die in a super cool way, maybe they get a high place of honor in Valhalla, or whatever you use. A PC who then dies fighting a lich or saving innocents is likely to receive a heroes welcome. This might be preferable to them than going back to life and then possibly getting killed by a trap or a bunch of orcs. This then makes the heroic death more palatable and desirable.
However you decide to make death impactful, I strongly recommend letting story trump rules for dramatic purposes. Technically, a character who has failed three death saving throws is just plain dead, but what fun is that. Instead, consider the possibility of having them be beyond saving instead. Let them be briefly conscious, either to beg the others to find a way to save them (think Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War as he gets “dusted”) or to tell them that their death is welcome and to let them go (a la Theoden in Return of the King). I remember a Werewolf game where a beloved PC was dying and telling her beloved pack how much she cared for them. There were many real tears being shed around the table, including by me as the Storyteller. Giving the PC a chance to speak and interact, even though it’s not part of the rules, gave the group a moment that I know I personally will never forget.
The biggest piece of advice I can give is that you must make sure your players are onboard with this. If you want death to be more powerful, impactful, and difficult to return from, DO NOT spring this on your players mid-game. This should be something everyone’s aware of, not something that comes as a surprise. Let everyone know during Session Zero; make sure everyone is okay with it, and, if not, be prepared to either back off from the idea (or else find a different player who’s onboard.) Like the X-card, be prepared to modify this even mid-campaign if someone shows that maybe they’re not as okay with losing Damathran Darkwarden as they thought they were. In the end, it’s just a game. It’s not worth hurting feelings and losing friends over.
I hope that helps, DD. Thanks for the question!
