#catch-22 managed to fall in the middle of the field for me at just ‘boring’

Acknowledging the literary value of a work and the message behind it doesn’t mean I have to enjoy it. Catch-22 is a great commentary on war and the both absurd yet bitterly human nature of it while also commenting on both the horrendously negative and transcendently positive capabilities of humanity. I still think it’s boring as shit tho.
#i adore absurdism#i hate war novels#catch-22 managed to fall in the middle of the field for me at just ‘boring’#it’s not even the bleakness of war novels that i dislike#i’m just fine with bleak and depressing shit#hell i MYSELF have some bleak and depressing story ideas i still love#and would like to realize in some form or fashion one day#i think it’s just how many of them there are#because so many of these ‘great works of the twentieth century’ are by war veterans#and yes!!! work on your trauma besties!!! im all here for it!!!#but being forced to read what felt like 20000 of them in school#while unknowingly fighting adhd the whole way#i just cant stand them anymore like nope that is a Bad Subject and i will throw the book if you bring it near me#like forcing myself to try and focus on them to the point of literal pain from the strain of it#for multiple YEARS#i cant deal with them anymore#catch-22 was a frustrating case because i saw the absurdism and delighted in it#but the overall setting was so hard to drag myself through it balanced out to an end result of ‘boring as shit’#i know in our discussion on the book I definitely came off like i didnt get it#no i get what it’s saying and i approve of the message#im STILL bored as shit tho besties#I graduated high school six yeara ago idk why im thinking about this rn#but yeah tl;dr i can absolutely get the idea behind ‘classics’ and appreciate and approve of the value in them#while ALSO never wanting to go near them ever again because im going to cry from boredom#i can appreciate WHAT youre saying without enjoying HOW youre saying it#these things are not mutually exclusive

Chapter 22-
Tumblr media
Broken glass and metal flew everywhere as the truck rolled for nearly 50 metres before coming to a stop. It laid in the middle of the field on it's roof and if your brain was actually working you would have been thankful that you decided to put your seat belt on. But, the only thing you could actually get your brain to process was the fact that the truck had crashed and that you were still strapped to your seat and sitting upside down.
You couldn't hear anything over the ringing in your ears as you looked over to Shane who was lying face down into the roof of the car which was now the bottom of the car since the damn truck had landed on it's roof. He clearly didn't have his seat belt on and if it wasn't for the herd of walkers that were no doubt heading towards you, you would have ripped into him about basic fucking safety, but now was not the time.
"Shane." You shouted in a whisper, not wanting to draw any more walkers towards you by shouting, but he seemed to be passed out because you could see his chest slowly moving up and down so you knew he wasn't dead. Well, he wasn't dead yet. You guys were literally sitting ducks right now.
"God damnit, Walsh." You muttered as your shakily reached for your seatbelt buckle before taking a deep breath as you clicked the button. Your body crashed to the ground and you couldn't stop the scream escaping your lips as your broken wrist slammed against roof of the truck, the sudden pain sending tears to your eyes.
Without wasting anytime dwelling over your wrist, you quickly rolled your body over and scrambled to your hands and knees. You grabbed your backpack which somehow was still beside you as you threw it out your open window and crawled out the gap, ignoring how the broken glass scraped against your bare arms.
Once you were out you quickly grabbed your backpack, throwing it over your shoulders as you rushed around to Shane's side of the truck. You took a split second to glance towards the herd and you wished you didn't because they were coming and shit they were getting close.
"Walsh! Wake up!" You shouted, not caring about raising your voice since the walkers were coming anyway as you crouched down beside his open window to find him still lying face down where he was earlier.
"Shit." You cursed under your breath as you grabbed Shane's hands and bit your tongue in the process to stop yourself from screaming at the pain it was causing your broken wrist as you began to pull him out through the window.
You only managed to pull his body halfway out before his eyes suddenly snapped open and you sighed with relief as he stared up at you in confusion. You could pinpoint the exact moment his brain clicked into gear because he suddenly rolled over and crawled the rest of the way out the truck before scrambling to his feet.
"The woods. Now." You yelled, pulling your handgun from it's holster as you fired at a few of the walkers that were getting too close and Shane followed suit, pulling out his own pistol and firing off a few rounds before the two of you sprinted towards the woods.
Neither of you dared to look back as you reached the woods and kept running. The moonlight proving you with enough light to see the trees as you dodged and weaved through them. Neither of you were running very fast since your knee was still recovering and you knew Shane's ankle was still screwed up from that night at the school with Otis.
You ran for nearly 10 minutes before Shane grabbed your arm and you both stopped running as he grabbed onto the nearest tree for support and he tried to catch his breath.
"D-did you see Daryl? Did he make it out? Did you see?" You asked breathlessly as you leant your back against the tree beside you and cradled your broken wrist to your chest. You were pretty sure the others had made it out, but you never saw if Daryl did or not, God you hoped he did.
"I couldn't see anything." Shane replied a few seconds later as he took in a couple deep breaths, trying to get air back into his lungs and that's when you saw the nasty bruise forming over the left side of Shane's forehead which he got during the crash and was clearly hard enough to knock him out.
"I'm fine, just a bruise." He reassured noticing your sudden worry and you nodded, not wanting to waste energy in speaking as you focused on trying the breath.
You pulled your handgun out and checked the clip which only had four bullets left inside and by the expression on Shane's face he didn't have many rounds left either as he checked his gun before tucking it back through his belt.
"We sho-" You began to say when suddenly the groans of walkers began to fill the air and your blood ran cold as you spun around and spotted the herd in the distance. Shit, they were quick. You couldn't out run them.
"C'mon!" Shane whispered nodding in the other direction as the two of you took off running again, but you were both already exhausted and it was clear you weren't going to be able to outrun the herd.
"Get in the tree." Shane suddenly instructed as you both stopped running and you quickly looked over at him thinking you heard him wrong.
"What?"
"We can't outrun them and I don't see any other options." Shane responded, but you quickly shook your head. No, like hell you were climbing a fucking tree and if the walkers could bust through a secure fence then they could probably knock down a damn tree.
"Y/N, you need to trust me." Shane said as he pointed towards one of the thicker trees to your left and you sighed. Fuck it, might as well try.
"I hate this." You grumbled, double checking that your handgun was secure in your holster before you began to climb up the tree, Shane helping you up the first few steps since your left hand was practically useless before he began climbing up behind you.
You focused on making sure your feet were on secure branches as you climbed higher until you were a good 10 feet in the air before you sat down on a thicker branch that seemed the strongest. Your legs were dangling off either side as you carefully pulled your backpack off and rested it over your lap so you could lean your back against the trunk of the tree as Shane sat down beside you on another thick branch.
You tried not to look down as you rested your head back against the tree, your legs gripped around the branch tightly and your good hand holding onto another branch to your right for support. You weren't a big fan of heights and jumping out the school window with Shane that day was enough for you, but this was a whole different story.
"You won't fall. Relax." Shane whispered from beside you and if you weren't sitting 10 feet up in a tree you would have wacked him because seriously saying 'relax' was not helping in the slightest.
"If this doesn't work, I'm killing you." You said quietly, glancing over at him as he chuckled.
"If this doesn't work, we'll be dead anyway." He replied honestly and you rolled your eyes.
"That makes me feel so much better." You muttered turning away from him as you stared up at the moon in the sky, trying anything to distract you from what you and Shane were doing.
It didn't take long before the herd caught up to you, the groans of the walkers getting louder and louder every minute before you finally spotted them in the distance as they stumbled through the woods in your general direction.
Neither of you dared to speak as you stared at the walkers, hoping, praying that they would just walk straight past. It took nearly 30 minutes before the herd finally walked past and continued heading in the opposite direction, but of course life seemed to hate you.
The next thing you heard was Shane mumbling 'oops' as you watched his knife fall to the ground, smashing into every single tree branch possible on the way down before it landed on the leafy floor below with a loud of enough thud for the last few walkers in the herd to hear.
"You couldn't have waited five more minutes?" You whispered, glaring at Shane as he stared down at his knife in a mixture of frustration and guilt before he glanced back towards the herd which were now walking back in your direction. Oh, that was just perfect.
You rested your head back against the tree with a sigh and just sat there as you waited to see what the walkers were going to do. But, of course, they all just end up milling around by your tree trying to find the source of the noise, but little did they know that the dumbass who made the noise was sitting 10 feet above them.
You both sat there for nearly an hour, some of the herd had gotten bored and began to wander off further into the woods, but others seemed happy to just stumble around your tree with nothing better to do.
"What time do you think it is?" You whispered as you very carefully began to unzip the front pocket of your backpack as quietly as possible.
"Maybe two, three in the morning?" Shane answered, but it sounded more like a questioned as he watched you curiously as you pulled out your military radio. "The hell you got that for? It's useless."
"It's more useful than your police radios." You responded quietly as you flicked it on and sighed with relied when it actually turned on. "I can set an alarm to go off on here at a certain time. We got taught how to do it in training, but never actually thought an alarm would come in handy until now." You explained as fiddled with the radio until you found the alarm setting and it was telling you to enter a time. You had to make sure you set the right time because if it was actually four in the morning and you set the alarm to go off at three in the morning then you were gonna have to wait 23 hours before it would go off.
"Tell me what time you think it is and then add another hour onto it just to be sure, because I would rather sit here for an extra hour than have to sit in this damn tree for a whole day because you got the time wrong." You whispered, glancing over at Shane who was staring up at the sky clearly trying to figure it out in his head. You tried to think of what the little digital screen said on the dashboard of the truck you guys were driving around in, but the last thing you were worried about in that moment was the time.
"Shit, I don't know. It wouldn't be any earlier than five in the morning, that's the only thing I'm certain on." Shane replied and well if that was the only thing he was positive about then that was what you were going to use.
"Five in the morning it is." You whispered as you set the alarm and turned the volume up to MAX before you threw the radio in the opposite direction of the farm as it landed on the ground 20 metres away with a thud.
A few of the walkers began heading towards it already, but most of them still stayed by your tree as you closed your backpack up and leant back against the tree as you waited for the alarm to go off.
You weren't sure how long you ended up sitting there for, but eventually the alarm began to ring, catching the walkers attention straight away as they all began to stumble over to the radio. The two of you quickly but quietly began climbing back down the tree while they were distracted.
Once you both reached the ground Shane grabbed his knife before you began running back in the direction of the farm, the walkers too focused on the alarm to hear or notice you at all.
By the time you reached the farm it was daylight, making the aftereffects of the herd even more presentable as you slowly walked up the dirt road towards the farmhouse which somehow still looked perfectly fine. There were still a few stray walkers stumbling around the property and were easy enough to kill with your knifes as you walked into the farmhouse.
You held your knife up ready in case there were any walkers inside, but the place seemed clean as you two did a quick sweep of the building, but nobody was inside. You walked back out onto the porch as Shane began packing up supplies into another backpack as you scanned the property.
The barn had been completely demolished, just a pile of smoking coals and ashes. The fences around the farm were all busted and broken and you could still very clearly see the blue pick-up truck lying on its roof in the distance.
"Y/N, you got any room in your bag?" Shane's voice suddenly called out as you walked back inside to find him in the kitchen, shoving plastic water bottles into his bag before he pointed towards the lounge room. You nodded knowing what he meant as you walked in and immediately grabbed your blanket, knowing it could easily fold up into a small pile and fit perfectly inside your backpack before you began going through the rest of the groups bags and shoving anything useful inside.
"Grab any clothes you can, the nights are starting to get colder." Shane instructed as he appeared by the doorway and dropped his backpack as he began grabbing various clothes from peoples bags as you grabbed your military jacket that was lying over one of the mattresses and tied it around your waist. "Rick would have went back to the highway where we left that sign for Sophia. Hopefully the others were smart enough to go there as well."
"That's over a days walk from here." You replied, throwing your backpack over your shoulders as Shane did the same with his before you both began to head back outside. The others were all in cars which meant they would all be there already... well that was if they all went there in the first place.
"Let's just hope we can find some place to camp the night on the way." Shane responded and with that the two of you set off down the dirt and began heading in the direction of the highway.
-
You managed to come across an abandon house on the side of the road when the sun began to set and figured it was a good of a place as any to spend the night. One of you slept while the other kept watch before you swapped halfway through the night and by sunrise you were back on the road and continued heading towards the highway.
It was about midday by the time you reached the highway and after following it for another hour you finally reached the sign you left Sophia, but the group wasn't there, nobody was there.
"This was the truck T-Dog and Andrea were in, they were here. Were the others here too?" You questioned out loud as you pointed to the familiar rusty truck that was covered in walker blood and guts as you scanned the area trying to find any other signs of the rest of the group before Shane spoke up.
"I don't think Andrea was here, Y/N. But the rest of the group definitely was." He suddenly said and you turned around to find him standing by the car where the supplies were left for Sophia, but he was holding a piece of a paper. "Read this." He said holding the paper out towards you as you jogged over to him and took the paper.
'Y/N, Shane, Andrea,
We couldn't wait any longer, the highway isn't safe with the number of walkers around. We've left you half the supplies and we'll be heading east, following the highway for as long as we can. We left the Greene truck as well if you need it, if you don't then take its fuel and head east. We will find each other again, but until then stay safe, please.
From, Rick, Lori, Carl, Daryl, Hershel, Maggie, Beth, Glenn, Carol and T-Dog.'
"Thank God," You whispered, staring at the paper as tears began rising in your eyes. Your family had made it out, Daryl had made it out, most of them had made it out and they were all together.
"They're alive, they made it." You repeated looking over at Shane who seemed to be relieved about it as well before he began loading the supplies into the truck, but made sure he left some for Andrea in case she had made it out as well.
You tucked the piece of paper under a few of the tin cans so Andrea knew which way to go if she happened to read it before you and Shane climbed into the rusty old truck and took off down the road.
You followed the main road for a few days, cyphaning fuel from any vehicles you passed along the way. You drove through a few small towns, but didn't dare to stop and try scavenge them, there were too many walkers and you guys had enough supplies to last the two of you for a few months.
Day 4:
Four days later you came across an intersection, it wasn't the first intersection you had come across, but it was the first one where the main road that was heading east was completely blocked by broken down cars and there was no way you'd get through. You thought about which direction Rick would take the group, but neither of you could figure out it out so you ended up turning right and hoped for the best.
Day 15:
You must have fallen asleep because when you opened your eyes the truck was moving and you glanced to your left to find Shane sitting in the drivers seat. You weren't sure why, but you've been really tired lately although that wasn't anything new these days those, you were just glad Shane was with you so you could keep switching watch duties at night while the other slept.
"Sleeping beauty is awake. You dozed off on me a few hours ago." Shane commented, glancing over at you noticing you were awake before he focused back on the road. You groaned sleepily as you rubbed your tired eyes and sat up straighter in your seat trying to wake yourself up. "About what I said yesterday-" Shane began to say before you cut him off.
"No. I'm not going to stop looking for them, I'm never going to stop looking for them." You responded, turning to look out your side window as you crossed your arms over your chest.
Shane had bought up the topic that you both had been thinking for a while, but neither of you wanted to say it. It has been over two weeks and you hadn't seen any sign of the group, they could be on the other side of the country by now and you knew that was a very real possibility, but when Shane said it out loud you refused to believe it.
"I'm not saying we should stop looking, I'd never stop looking either, but we can't keep living on the road like this. We need to find a place to say for a while, it's going to be winter soon." Shane said logically and you hated that he was right, but the thought of stopping and staying somewhere for a few months when you could be driving and covering more ground to find the group just didn't sit right with you, but you knew Shane was right.
Before you had a chance to say anything back sudden nausea hit you like a truck and you barely had any time to wonder why the hell you started to feel nauseas because you knew you were about to throw up.
"Stop the car." You quickly said, already reaching for the doorhandle as Shane hit the brakes without asking why, clearly sensing something wasn't right by the tone of your voice. As soon as the truck came to a stop you opened the door, not even having time to step out the car as you leant out the door and threw up the little food you had inside you.
"Shit." You thought you heard Shane mutter from some somewhere behind you, but all you could focus on was your stomach retracting violently as you continued to throw up.
It felt like hours, but was probably only a five or so minutes before the nausea seemed to fade away, leaving you sitting on the edged of your seat as you leant your forearms against your knees trying to remember how to breath.
"Here." Shane's voice suddenly said as he handed you a plastic water bottle and you took it, rinsing out the disgusting taste in your mouth before you took a few sips. "You alright?" He asked after a few seconds and you nodded, screwing the lid back onto the water bottle as you handed it back to him before you shut your car door and leant back in your seat.
"I better not be getting sick." You muttered, glancing over at Shane who was staring at you with a hint of concern etched into his face. "Don't look at me like that, I'll be fine. Let's just find a place to stay for the winter." You responded and Shane looked like he wanted to argue about the first part, but for the first time he kept his mouth shut and started the truck up before he continued driving down the road.

Like I said in my last chapter, the next few chapters won't have much of Daryl in them, but I promise it will be worth it. So bare with me for a bit because things are about to get even more complicated for Y/N and Shane.
The next chapter will be up next weekend and luckily today is a public holiday in Australia, so I can watch twd when it airs in a few hours, I am so excited!!
Anyway, until next time stay safe everyone and have a great day xx

Bookshelf Briefs 5/28/19
Creature Girls: A Hands-On Field Journal in Another World, Vol. 1 | By Kakeru | Seven Seas – This was another “I’ll get the first volume, how bad could it be?” sort of book. The answer is pretty bad, at least for readers of my taste. That said, for those in the market this is aiming for, Creature Girls must be a dream come true. A monster girl story with actual coitus, as well as deep down analysis of the girls’ bodies, almost to the point of parody. The plot is the standard “guy transported to fantasy world” stuff, and there’s a few mentions made of battles against enemies that he helps them with. But the target reader is not here for that. He is here to see monster girls show off their boobs, swear they’re 18, and get screwed. This book gives that to you, in spades. I’ll pass on future volumes. – Sean Gaffney
Haikyu!!, Vol. 32 | By Haruichi Furudate | Viz Media – Oh boy, more full volumes of volleyball. They sure do (punches fist in air) PLAY that volleyball, huh? OK, OK, let me see… the twins’ backstory was quite good, and I enjoyed the end, where we see more of Hinata’s growth to the point where Tsukishima even praises him, as much as Tsukishima is ever going to praise anyone. And credit to the author, 32 volumes in, for continuing to find ways to not make volleyball boring. There are great poses and a fast pace which reminds you why this is such a popular series. The pace is not fast enough that the game is over, though, and I’m fairly sure that the next volume will have me groping for words once more. It’s a good series, though. – Sean Gaffney
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Part 4: Diamond Is Unbreakable, Vol. 1 | By Hirohiko Araki| Viz Media – Ten years after the final battle between Dio and Jotaro in Cairo, the fourth part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure returns to Japan. In the first volume of Diamond Is Unbreakable, Jotaro has come to the town of Morioh to investigate a series of crimes and to search for Josuke Higashikata, his uncle and the illegitimate son of his grandfather Joseph Joestar. When Jotaro finds Josuke he discovers a high schooler with a very powerful Stand and a hair-trigger temper (both literally and figuratively) to go with it, a potentially dangerous combination. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure continues to be a violent and grotesque series—the human and animal cruelty present will be too much for some readers—but I continue to love it for its strangeness, over-the-top action sequences, and ridiculous characters. Josuke in particular is one of those delinquents with a heart of gold that brings me tremendous delight. – Ash Brown
Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits, Vol. 3 | By Waco Ioka and Midori Yuma | Viz Media – I’m wondering how much of this series is going to be Aoi healing people’s hearts through the power of delicious food. Oryo spends most of the volume sick (well, the impression is she’s also hiding), but even she will eat Aoi’s food. We also get backstory on Suzuran and Akatsuki, and take a trip back to Japan so that Suzuran can pay her respects to the late Shiro, and also stay behind. It’s a perfect opportunity for Aoi to stay behind as well, something her captor knows only too well, but she chooses to return anyway. This series looks pretty slow burn, so I think the food may outweigh the romance for a while yet. But I’m OK with that. – Sean Gaffney
Kiss & White Lily for My Dearest Girl, Vol. 9 | By Canno | Yen Press – Half this volume is Yukine and Ayaka, who are coming to realize that “winning” or “losing” is not the be-all and end-all of their relationship. Good thing too, as Ayaka finally wins. Elsewhere, we see a girl who’s a repeater (she was injured and couldn’t get attendance credits), so is something of a loner, but also a cosplayer. She ends up falling for a younger, puppy-dog sort of girl, but it’s hard to get over putting people at a distance, so they end up breaking up quickly. But is it really over? This volume frames the “main” pairing right in the middle, with the ‘volume’ pairing as a bookend, and it woks very well. Next volume is the last, so I suspect it will be all Ayaka and Yukine. – Sean Gaffney
Little Witch Academia, Vol. 3 | By Trigger, Yoh Yoshinari and Keisuke Sato | JY – The spinoff comes to an end here, and there’s no real climactic finale—they have to win a flying contest against another school, but Diana is ill, so Akko tries her hardest (and mostly fails) and succeeds in the end, because she’s just that plucky. In the end, I think this spinoff probably works best for the groups it’s marketed for—kids and those who watched the anime. I wasn’t as fond of it as I was the other ones, as it’s clear that any character development is going to be in the main series. But as an advertisement for the main series, it’s excellent—I certainly would like to see more of everyone. Something to get your niece for her birthday—at three volumes, it’s even affordable. – Sean Gaffney
My Monster Secret, Vol. 16 | By Eiji Masuda | Seven Seas – Every new volume of the series after its first “ending” seems to be designed to annoy me—something that also befell the very similar Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, if I recall. As the cover might give away, this volume doubles down on the teacher-student romance between Akari (who has at least appeared a lot) and Sakurada, best known as the least developed one of Those Three Guys, who looks much older than he is, which I guess is supposed to take the curse off the creepiness but doesn’t. Elsewhere, there is still some good comedy—I particularly liked the chapter with the supermarket sale—but more and more it appears this should have ended with the mutual confession. – Sean Gaffney
One-Punch Man, Vol. 16 | By ONE and Yusuke Murata | Viz Media – Still far too serious, and now faced with Saitama barely being in it. Certainly if you like cool fights it’s a good read, but I can get that from a dozen other manga titles. I read this for silliness, and that’s in short supply here. I did like the idea of the superhero “Megane,” who is pretty much just a guy with glasses. There’s also some good development from Garo, whose analysis is top tier, but who sadly is a bit too focused on the wrong things. But then again so are the A-rank heroes—there’s a fair bit of hypocrisy here. At least Genos knows what’s what, and we also get the return of Bang, who has a grudge of his own. It looks like Saitama will show up soon, and thank goodness. Who needs a totally serious One-Punch Man? – Sean Gaffney
Ooku: The Inner Chambers, Vol. 15 | By Fumi Yoshinaga | VIZ Media – Revolution is approaching as the most senior of Iesada’s ministers signs a trade treaty with America without waiting for Imperial approval. This fellow silences his detractors with harsh punishments and winds up assassinated by the end of the volume for his trouble. Meanwhile, the pregnant Iesada has evidently been gotten out of the way by somebody, but it’s unclear who, leaving her bereaved consort Taneatsu in the dark about her demise for a full month. Now he’s doing his best to guide her clever successor, who has just been married to an Imperial prince. She was concerned about deceiving the emperor, since the shogunate’s part of the deal was to oust foreigners, but a big reveal in the final pages proves they’re the ones who’ve been deceived. Still great, if sad. Poor Taneatsu. – Michelle Smith
Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization, Vol. 3 | By Tomo Hirokawa, based on the story by Reki Kawahara | Yen Press – The danger is ramped up a lot more in this volume, which also comes with the return of a familiar face from the Progressive series. When it comes to “NPCs can surpass their programming,” no one’s done it more often than SAO, with the current Alicization arc being all about that. Kizmel was (storywise, at least) first, though, and it’s heartwarming to see Kirito and Asuna reunite with her, even if she doesn’t know who they are. That said, this side story is still all about Premiere, who has a role that she is clearly there to fulfill… and also there’s more than one of her? Not for casuals, but SAO fans should find this a lot of fun. – Sean Gaffney
Yowamushi Pedal, Vol. 11 | By Wataru Watanabe | Yen Press – The joy of our whole team of six catching up with one another is tempered by the reminder that there can be only one winner of this race… and that the others are going to drop back and fail. It’s a hard lesson for Onoda to absorb, and by the end of the book he’s still struggling to. The rest of the book is filled with the most manly cycling ever, fortunately, and I have to say pound-for-pound this series even manages to out-shonen the Jump titles. That said, holy hell, this is a long race, and we’re still not done. Sports manga go on forever, and nothing says that better than this omnibus, which equates to vols. 21-22 of the original. I hope Sohoku eventually wins. And by that I mean Onoda. – Sean Gaffney

Sten Hugo Hiller - My Faction War 3335. Second opponent: Leviathan/Collectors/Heroes/Toys
Sten Hugo Hiller
May 22 at 6:52am
(By Sten Hugo Hiller - 627184) My Faction War 3335.  Second opponent: Leviathan/Collectors/Heroes/Toys
(Or as our leader called them; The Horde.)
Berserker Camp, Battleday 2, t-20 hours.
As the most pressing matters had been resolved, the leadership sent airlift to get me and my crew out of the closed maze the Dragons had made of the canyons I had retreated into.
The frantic actions of the first few hours had subsided slightly, but it was still a grim sight. My implants found most of the formations, but the number of reserve pilots in them were high, a testament to the drubbing most formations had taken.
I had to get some replacements as well, not too many fatalities, but plenty of Mech jockeys would be out of action for the foreseeable future as shattered limbs and ruptured organs were patched together again.
Normally it could have been speeded up by use of the time coffins, but after Boris and Keikkos raid on them and Johns H-Bombs to make the super powerplants, we had to reserve them for the truly critical cases.
Speaking of the devil, ehr.. I mean the leader, here was John striding across the muster field toward me. Grabbing me by the shoulder he pulled me into a tent and started pointing at a map who hung there. "Sten, your forces was not much help in the latest action, and by reviewing the Horde`s power level, I find that using you as a blocking force in a pass will be even less effective this time. Too many of them will simply brush you aside. Therefore your unit will be utilized a different way this time."
Rapping at a dot near the border between us and the Horde he continued. "This mining town of Urias is abandoned now, but last century there was significant output from it. The mineshafts were made by bigger Mechs than usual, so you should have no problems maneuvering in them, although the Horde will find them to restricted to move the big Mechs in. They probably can't take it from you, and while it isn't exactly a choke point, the best road is just a few clicks away."
He grabbed me by the shoulders and his eyes bored deep into my skull to see if there was something there. I don't know if he found what he was looking for, he released me and continued. "We will probably be pushed back, you are to hold, make diversionary raids and harass their supply lines. For this operation, your call sign is task force Muon"
Well. When the boss needs someone to do a shitty job like that, guess he find the most expendable unit. Although there were some details lacking from the briefing, I got the picture.
Like the two missing "t"s in the middle of the task force name ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Urias town, Battleday 2, t-40 minutes
We had done what we could to prepare for the onslaught.  The little ammo and the few spare parts we had managed to sneak along was placed in the deepest mineshafts.
Those mining companies surely had built small and solid.  The town sprawled over more than four square kilometers, and those buildings were one and two story concrete. A Mech formation could reduce them to rubble, but it would take an hour or so for each building, so most of the town would probably still be standing after the action.
My crew had gathered in the town square and was waiting for me to address them. My head was hurting, how was I going to present this fustercluck? Deciding to keep it short and simple I came out on the balcony of the city hall.
"Ok, here is the situation.  Higher suspects the horde will advance over the whole line. Most units are ordered to fall back and regroup at designated locations, we are not. In one to two hours we will probably be deep into the Hordes rear, unless they manage to dig us out first. That is not going to happen.  Firstly because you are masters of evasion and falling back. Secondly because this town couldn't be better for our tactics. Thirdly because the Horde will have a timetable and can't spend lots of time on us when the plan is to crush the main Berserker force." I forced a grin onto my face. "When we are true and deeply surrounded, we will start hitting them. Hit and run. Grab the supplies we can, and burn what we can't, the exploding munitions should confuse their sensors long enough for us to get away"
They actually cheered --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Battle
As predicted the Horde came swarming forth. The initial clashes wasn't totally one sided, but they did in general trash us two times out of three.
One thing. Some civilians seem to think it is unsportsmanlike to hit someone who can't properly defend themselves. Like, say if they are out of formation. The same civilians seem to think it is right and proper for someone having a main of 4000+ tons to waltz over someone else's main of barely 2000 tons.  In both cases the result is pretty much a given. For me, catching those out of formation and smashing them is part and parcel of warfare. If you mess up you pay the price.
Mark K Penner was preparing to hit me, but he was a bit slow of the mark, so I double tapped him instead. That brought our combined total wins over the years to 35 for me 13 628 for him
But he was by no means the only victim of sniper fire. Our southern flank was in shambles after Todd Raineys ill-fated decision to bring his main force to defend the swamp. He was helplessly mired and the Horde sent dozens of Ant formations over to enjoy blasting a sitting duck.
After a couple hours the writing was on the wall. Several of the top Horde Commanders had visited me, most had managed to shift me deeper into the city, but those who had failed had written a warning to their fellows on the low wall surrounding the town:  "Proceed with extreme caution"
I don't know if that warning kept most of them away, or if they were busy taking important objectives and couldn't spare the time, but less than a third of them came along to bother me. Of the total of 24 attacks launched against the town, 10 was beaten back
One of the attackers was Scott Abbott. His first attack hit us pretty hard, and we fell back into the maze of streets on the southern side of the town. We were barely repaired when he returned to finish us off. But we had his measure now.  On paper it was a raw deal for me. I am a lowly level 149, he is an accomplished master at level 314, 165 levels above me. That meant his Mechs had about twice the armor and armament of mine. But he had forgotten one of the basic tenants of warfare; "Always leave the opponent an Escape route" With our backs to the wall there were only two options, win or die.
His first line consisted of 3 Novums, a Layne and two iMechs My frontline was my four Novums backed by a Trooper. Lt Lee was in a rare form. Swirling above the battlefield in her favorite Novum, No Humming, she rained death and destruction on the opponents. The rest of the line picked up the pace, and the impossible happened. One by one the opponents fell. I hardly dared believe my eyes as the last of them was killed and her line was unscratched. She used the external speakers "Bring it on, we got more where that came from" Six more lines of his iMechs answered her call, and the battle was joined in earnest.
His second line blasted loose, and first Blue Angel and then my Trooper fell, But they paid in blood for that. All of them were blown apart, and the follow up wave fell without scoring a single hit. The fourth line killed, another Novum before they were incinerated and the fifth line now outnumbering her six to two managed to blow my last Novums out of the sky. My second line stepped forward, but was dispatched at the cost of two of his iMechs. My third line gutted them, but fell before his sixth. They proceeded to take out my fourth line, but at that point only two of his iMechs were standing. My fifth line dispatched them and his last line came out of the shadows. A heavy blow sent one of my iMechs through a building, but the return fire dismantled his forces
He pulled back out of the town, and to my amazement he stopped just a click away. Ok, if he had switched to his main force and stood there to hammer us if we left the town it would have been understandable. But that wasn't what he was doing. He was fiddling with his 30s. An invitation like that can't be resisted. My main strike force was called out, and his thirties melted as dew in sunlight, then we did it once more. Of course, as soon as he was finished rearming, he sent his 30s back in, and this time we were blown apart again, but the breather had let us get more fallback positions ready, and we were still a going concern.
At about that time a call from higher got through, it was somewhat garbled due to the distance and all the opposing formations between us who used jammers, but the gist seemed to be that command was displeased with us letting so much of the Hordes resupply get through, and we were to start raiding.
Incredibly enough, we actually built up our stockpiles. Not every foray was a success, but nine out of ten tries left the opponents burning in our wake. When the sun finally rose and signaled the end of the battle my formation had double tapped more than two thirds of the opponents.
Of course there was the question of returning to the Berserker camp. While the battle was officially over, I wondered how we were to bring all the loot along. In the end we had to leave some of the super power plants behind. I did my best to ensure nothing bad would happen. by writing user instructions and warning that it was Black Box Technology, any tampering, cutout of power or opening could cause severe damage to those in the vicinity.
Oh, and the final score. They trounced us, but not as bad as the Dragons. At the end of the day they had gotten better than 2-1 on us and scored 1945 vs 867.
Thanks for the fun (and the spare parts) Hope you will appreciate being squarely on the receiving end when the Dragons gobble you up in round 3.

Green Bay Packers 2017 draft picks in 1 play
It finally happened ladies and gentlemen, the 2017 NFL draft has officially concluded. As we all brace for the most painful 3 months of the NFL dead season, let’s take a moment to get to know the newest Green Bay Packers. In an attempt to present something you’ve already seen dozens of times in a new way, we’ll use 1 play to summarize each player drafted.
Kevin King: King of the Boundary
We’ve all seen this highlight at least a billion times. Part of me wanted to find a new clip so as to not not seem too boring or lazy but the more I think about it, there is no better representation of what Kevin King offers the Packers than this play.
Tumblr media
In 2016 , Kevin King allowed exactly 0 touchdowns. You know why? The guy is 6’3 and runs a 4.3 40. If you want to beat him you have a shot with underneath throws but beating him deep or trying to throw a fade in the endzone is going to result in a bad day for you. King is a monster on the outside and is exactly what the Packers needed.
With the addition of Davon House the Packers now have two big corners to handle outside duty which allows Gunter to strictly operate as the number three outside guy. The rest of the 5’11 corners are free to play toward the middle where athleticism is more important than raw size and power.
 Josh Jones: The Ballistic Missile
To me, the Josh Jones pick was the epitome of a Ted Thompson pick. You’re texting your friends back and forth wondering who the pick will be. Roughly 45 names have been batted back and forth on top of the 10 or so the gentleman on TV list as the best remaining. The reaction following the pick is, “A safety? Why a safety? ….And who is Josh Jones??”
But as time goes on and you watch the player, it becomes clear why Jones was drafted and you start to wonder why the guy wasn’t in the first round conversation. As far as why a safety, for those wondering, Jones isn’t a depth pick. The Packers employ a ton of 3 safety looks in their dime package in which Burnett lines up as a linebacker. With Hyde gone, Kentrell Brice is now the third safety. No disrespect to Brice but this was a need pick, not a luxury one.
Tumblr media
I don’t mean to imply with the clip that Jones can’t cover but the thing that excites me about Jones is what you see above. He is a heat seeking missile that destroys his target on impact. With his 4.41 speed, Jones can close with lightning quickness. Add in that he’s 220 pounds and the guy is a wrecking ball.
We don’t yet know how the roster will shake out but if you were to ask me how I would do it, Jones would take over for Morgan Burnett in the dime situation, playing as the inside linebacker. His range and power would make any attempt to throw underneath a waste and would also allow Ha Ha and Burnett to rove over the top. It gets me excited just thinking about it.
Montravius Adams: Mount Travius
The Packers top brass made the comment that they were shocked to see Adams available when they were picking which tells me they feel they got a steal. I tend to agree
Tumblr media
I love the video above because it represents two things about the player that I think are important. The first is his elite speed and athleticism that allows him to get up field and fast. Of all the 300 plus pound defensive lineman, only 4 were able to run the 40 in under 5.00 seconds.
Eddie Vanderdoes: 4.99 Larry Ogunjobi: 4.98 Charles Walker: 4.96 Montravius Adams: 4.88
It’s really not even close. The Packers love athleticism and they got perhaps the best combination of size and speed in the defensive lineman class.
The second thing I love about the video is it highlights his ability to make plays. It sounds like boring analysis but so many defensive lineman have the strength to push people around but when it comes time to bring down the runner or quarterback, they fall short. They can’t disengage the blocker, wrap up the runner, and make a play. Adams is fantastic at not only winning the point of attack but moving the blocker out of the way and making the play when it counts.
Vince Biegel: Clay Jr.
Bottom line, Vince Biegel is Clay Matthews. I’m not sure why Clay Matthews’ value is now worth a 4th round pick but let’s just look at this real quick.
Vince: 6’3 246, 4.67 40, 21 bench, 33.5 vert, 118 broad, 6.92 3 cone 0.33 sacks per game in senior year (4 in 12 games)
Clay:  6’3 240, 4.67 40, 23 bench, 35.5 vert, 121 broad, 6.90 3 cone 0.35 sacks per game in senior year (4.5 in 13 games)
They are the exact same person. Add to the fact that they both have a high motor, maximum effort, and glorious hair… I’m telling you, same person.
Here’s your clip, enjoy.

Jamaal Williams: The Brawler
I love Ty Montgomery but the one thing that is clearly lacking with the loss of Eddie Lacy is a bruiser. The Packers went out and got three. We’ll see who makes the final roster but the idea of the Packers being able to pound defenses over and over and over with a stable of thumpers has to get you excited.
None are more exciting than Jamaal Williams who is an absolute brawler that looks for contact. He put it this way.
“I like to bruise and pound people a lot. I feel like I’m a grinder, a workhorse. As the game gets in the third and fourth quarter, I’m getting stronger and stronger and trying to wear defenses down. That’s how I like to play but at the same time I feel like I have the ability to make big runs and get to the end zone anytime too.”
Have you ever seen something so awesome it gave you chills and the chills were so intense your eyes watered a little? I found the little doozy below and that was exactly what happened to me. Notice at the end how he waves at the tackler to come get him and runs into the contact. It’s the 4th quarter by the way. I really really like this guy.
Tumblr media
DeAngelo Yancey: The Golden Eagle
A guy that runs a 4.53 40 time but manages to rack up 19.4 yards per carry is unusual. In Yancey case, being 6’2 220 pounds, you might assume he gets a lot of yards after the catch. Watching the guy play, however, it seems all his big plays are down the field where he manages to get behind the DB’s.
Tumblr media
The Packers mentioned he plays much faster than his 40 and that certainly seems to be the case.
Aaron Jones: The Bullet Ant
Aaron Jones as compared to Jamaal Williams is the small shifty guy of the bunch. Don’t let that fool you, the guy is a banger. Yes he’s 5’9. Ask me if I care.
Tumblr media
Again, we’ll see how the final roster shakes out but winning in the 4th quarter just got a lot easier.
Kofi Amichia: The Bull
The Packers drafted an offensive tackle in the middle rounds who will be converted to guard. The only question left is, how long before he goes to the pro bowl?
Amichia having played tackle has the athleticism to pull and get to the next level in the NFL but is, at heart, a mauler.
Below, Amichia is the left tackle number 75.
Tumblr media
The AAC isn’t the toughest conference in the country but Amichia dominated everyone in front of him. I’m excited about him, especially since, at this point in time, he’s depth.
Devante Mays: Pinball Wizard
Our third and final banger is Eddie Lacy reincarnate. At 5’11, 230 pounds, Mays is dimensionally the same player.
To make things sweeter, Mays ran a 4.5 40 (Lacy ran it in 4.64) and has a 420 pound bench press (22 reps at 225) which drew some comparisons to 3rd round pick, D’Onta Foreman.
The big concern with Mays is his 1 full year playing running back followed by an injury that kept him out of most of his senior year. The small sample size and injury concerns likely dropped him to the 7th. Outside of that, Mays was a 3rd round pick this year.
Tumblr media
Malachi Dupre: Cinderella Man
Hopefully Dupre never finds out the name I gave him but it works. Like the movie, Dupre was once considered one of the best but inexplicable (in my mind anyway) fell to the 7th round. The name is also a compliment because it implies that I expect him to rise to the top once again…. I’m sorry Malachi.
Tumblr media
It’s hard to see what’s happening above but it appears to be a ball that hits the intended receiver in the leg and Dupre catches the deflection.
It seems like a weird highlight but my take away from Dupre is that his strength is his ability to make the plays in front of him. He isn’t super tall, he’s less than 200 pounds, he ran a 4.52, and thanks to a poor quarterback, his stats aren’t fantastic.
Still, when the ball is in the air, my money is on Dupre. His ability to adjust and make the play no matter the situation has to get you excited, especially for a receiver that will have Mr. Improvisation, Aaron Rodgers, as his quarterback.
Similar to Geronimo Allison, there is nothing about him that makes you think he would make a good receiver, yet whenever he was on the field he just seemed to make plays. That’s how I see Dupre as a Packer.
