ARCHDUCHESS ISABELLA, THE DUCHESS OF SUSSEX HAS BEEN SAFELY DELIVERED OF TWO SONS
Her Imperial and Royal Highness Archduchess Isabella, The Duchess of Sussex was safely delivered of two sons at 5:15pm and 5:32pm.
The first baby weighs 10lbs 6 oz and the second baby weighs 11lbs 2 oz
The Duke of Sussex was present for the birth
The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke of Cambridge, The Duchess of Cambridge, Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.
Her Imperial and Royal Highness and her children are both doing well and have been remaining in Belgium since the birth.
“How are you?”
“Very tired and still in pain,” answered Isabella.
“I went to go see the young princes. They are all you Belle.”
“Thank you, Michel, but they are not princes. Harry’s grandmother did not give them titles,” replied Isabella.
“But they will be one day.”
“Yes, but-”
“Have you thought about godparents yet?” interrupted Michel.
“I have,” answered Isabella.
“Forgive me. Since Alix gave birth to Olympia last year, I have been in heaven.”
“I understand.”
“It reminds me of my childhood that’s all. The dozens of cousins running around, the marriages, and the children. My mother is ecstatic about your sons,” smiled Michel.
“I only have three godparents chosen so far. One is Harry’s longtime friend and mentor, the other is Harry’s private secretary. The third is King Philippe.”
“The King? A great choice. He would be honored to godfather to a British prince. Something like that probably has not happened since the days of Queen Victoria.”
“I was also thinking of Henri,” added Isabella.
“My Henri?” asked Michel.
“Yes. He’s always been there for me, and I’ve just given birth in the Château he will one day inherit... so it seems like the right thing to do.”
“Anyone else?”
“A couple of cousins from both Harry and I and maybe some of Harry’s friends but that’s all. I was thinking of Charlie and Bertie each having about five or six godparents each,” answered Isabella.
“How you heard anything about Marie Gabrielle?” asked Michel.
“She’s on bedrest last time I heard. She’s due the first week of June and Antonius has been over the moon about having his little boy in his arms.”
“I also know your sister-in-law Kathleen is pregnant again. How many great-grandchildren for uncle Jean?”
“By the end of this year, it will be seventeen great-grandchildren. Charlie and Bertie are numbers seven and eight for Her Majesty,” answered Isabella.
“I have no doubt there will be several announcements in January. By 2019 I presume uncle Jean will have 25 great-grandchildren.”
“Perhaps. Grandpapa does have 17 grandchildren. Her Majesty only has 8. There is much difference between the two.”
“Of course there is. In our family, you have as many children as you want. With the British they can’t do that, they have too many eyes on them.”
“Do you think it was wise to marry Harry?”
Michel gave Isabella a shocked look, “Do you really want my opinion?” asked Michel.
“Of course. You are my family after all,” answered Isabella.
“I think it would have been wiser to marry my son or Joachim.”
“Marry Henri? I never thought about that so much in all honesty,” replied Isabella.
“Well, you and he did have flirtation before you and Joachim ever were something.”
“Michel, Joachim and I were always something.”
“Well yes, but I always thought that you and Henri would have been perfect. I can only hope he will marry someone with a great bloodline like yours,” smiled Michel.
“You mean your family. We have the same family after all,” laughed Isabella.
“Yes, well, you do have dozens of cousins. Bourbons or Habsburgs will be okay with me,” laughed Michel.
“Forgive me, but I think it’s time for me to relax. If you find my mother, please send her up here,” asked Isabella.
“Darling what’s wrong?” asked Marie Astrid.
“I just have some questions,” answered Isabella.
“Oh of course. What are they?”
“How long will I be bleeding for?” asked Isabella.
“Some women bleed a little as 2 weeks, but for the most part it will be a month,” answered Marie Astrid.
“I feel so disgusting now. Giving birth is nothing like I expected. Why didn’t anyone tell me anything?!”
“You just had a more difficult pregnancy. I can assure you that most women and maybe even you will never have to experience something like that,” replied Marie Astrid.
“How are they? Are they healthy? I worry about them.”
“Gabriella finished feeding them a while ago. Don’t forget to thank your sister for doing that for you while you recover. They are large babies Belle! Such handsome little boys, they remind me of you when you were such a tiny little thing,” beamed Marie Astrid.
“How is Harry? Was he okay during... everything?”
“Poor boy was a mess. He was so worried for you and the boys. He looked so happy holding the boys in his arms. Everyone is just over the moon!”
“What about my stomach? I still look so pregnant.”
“With most women, it takes about a month for the uterus to return to normal size. Although, since you had twins and huge twins might I add, I think it would be well over two months for you,” answered Marie Astrid.
“I tried walking today and I just couldn’t. I gave birth almost a week ago, and it feels like it’s only been a day!” said Isabella.
“You were very weak in the beginning, it was a difficult pregnancy, and your body just needs time to recover. You have no rush to leave this room any time soon. Besides by the time you’ve healed, you’ll just feel so tired with two babies.”
“Okay,” replied Isabella accepting defeat.
“The Duchess of Sussex has given birth to Charles Henry Ferdinand Baudoin Jean Philip and Albert Maximilian Christian Leopold Felix Ludwig. Both the children and the mother are doing fine. The Duchess of Sussex has been remaining in Belgium until it is safe for her to travel.”
June 2018
“Belle I am telling you he is the cutest thing in the world!” yelled Marie Gabrielle, Isabella’s cousin.
“I’m so happy for you Elle!”
“I think we’ve decided on a name too, Zeno. It’s a family name on Toni’s side, and we just fell in love with it.”
“Any middle names yet?” asked Isabella.
“Probably Philippe after the king. Maybe Jean for great-grandpapa or Thierry for Toni’s grandfather.”
“What about godparents?”
“Nothing. I haven’t even chosen names, let alone godparents Belle,” laughed Marie Gabrielle.
“I think Wenceslas or Johan would be perfect as a godfather,” suggested Isabella.
“Why not Constantin?”
“Constantin had a baby last month, he’s had his fair share of attention for the year. Besides, you know Wenceslas is my favorite of all of you,” replied Isabella.
“Well I am hurt Belle,” joked Marie Gabrielle.
“You have to call me the moment you pick a date for Zeno’s christening! I cannot wait to be with the family again.”
“What about Charlie and Bertie’s christening? Surely that will come before Zeno’s.”
“I was planning for it in a couple of days but my body is still recovering, and I don’t feel like going out in public just yet,” answered Isabella.
“How much longer do you think you and the twins will stay in Belgium? Surely you are wanted in London.”
“Buckingham Palace is going to release a statement that I will need time to recover after the difficult birth but obviously be vaguer than that.”
“Belle, Ella said that you almost died giving birth to those boys. Surely they will give you all the time to recover.”
“I did not almost die! That is such an exaggeration. Her Majesty would give me all the time in the world to recover, but the press and the people would not like it. I am the Edelweiss, and she is the English Rose,” said Isabella.
“It amazes me how confident yet insecure about yourself,” laughed Marie Gabrielle.
“I think this conversation has run its course. Goodbye Elle.”
“Okay. Goodbye Belle. Don’t worry too much, you are much too pretty for that,” laughed Marie Gabrielle.

Holding Onto Hope: Chapter 49
Chris
Bliss is an innate state of inner joy.
It is constant, undisturbed by outward gain or loss.
We all have the capacity for it, no matter our age, background, physical or mental disabilities, ethnicity, gender, or religion. External circumstances, whether positive or negative, happy or sad, do not affect it.
Bliss is where happiness, meaning, and truth converge.
I was in a room with Hope. She was lying on a narrow bed with some clear jelly that she said was cold on her exposed belly. There was a black lady smiling and pressing a little nob against her skin and they were both facing a small screen. And on that screen… was my daughter, healthy heartbeat and all. She was agitated because the lady kept pressing the nob thing right against her as she tried to sleep, because that’s literally all she did all day. She lazed around in there and waited ‘til night to make her mom uncomfortable and keep her awake ‘til the wee hours of the morning. But now, she was up and wiggling around and upset… she had so much personality already.
I grinned like a complete idiot from my corner in the small room. No, this wasn’t a dream or some made up memory from my insane mind… this was a reality that I never thought I would be a part of. I didn’t get to experience this with Jaylen and I didn’t think I would make it to experience it now. But I was here, and I was smiling, because I was happy… the happiest I had ever been in my entire life.
Two days after she’d returned home to me after her finals at school in Georgia, Hope asked me if I would accompany her to her first doctor’s appointment with her new doctor… the lady that would be delivering our baby. For whatever reason, I was nervous. Sure I’d been in and out of hospitals a few times in my life, but that still didn’t mean I was much of a fan of the place. I was more afraid of this visit because the last time I’d spoken to a doctor in regards to Hope being pregnant, they told me that she’d had a miscarriage. I would never tell her this of course, but any doctor that had to do with a baby made me cringe.
“Baby girl looks beautiful. You and her both are doing wonderfully and I really couldn’t be more pleased with your progress.” The doctor, who kind of reminded me of Dr. Yates, said.
Bliss cannot be attained, really. The soul simply realizes that bliss simply… is
I could recognize it… I was in bliss. My mom told me once that she explained to Hope that I had an obvious purpose on this earth and that was to love her with everything in me and love my children even more. She was right. This was my calling. I wanted to cry because I’d never felt an ongoing surge of bliss the way I felt it sitting there across from the love of my life as she stared at a 3D image of my first daughter. I saw this girl, this woman, in a way I’d never seen her before. She was carrying my child… that made her the most beautiful woman in the world to me.
God, I was getting too caught up in my emotions. I didn’t even realize the doctor was standing in front of me with a stack of printed pictures of my daughter in my face.
“Chris…” I heard Hope’s voice and blinked myself back into reality and only then did I notice the small glossy pictures in my face.
The doctor chuckled and shook her head “Daddy’s getting all caught up in the moment over here. Here, these are for you sweetheart.”
“Thank you.” I muttered, glancing up at her, almost too embarrassed to look her right in the eye.
She laughed and turned back to face Hope with her hands on her hips “Isn’t he just the cutest? I’ve seen countless excited dad’s, but in all my twenty-five years I don’t think I’ve ever seen that spark that I see in his eyes. This little girl is gonna be spoiled, I can tell.”
My heart swelled at the sound of that and my cheeks warmed up as I smiled. I could feel Hope looking at me and when I glanced at her, she too wore a smile.
“Well I’ll give you some time to get all situated. Did you have any questions for me?”
“No Dr. Zeeta, you’ve been so kind and helpful. I’m just really thankful I got transferred to you.” Hope said. I looked from her to the doctor… Dr. Zeeta Johnson, or just Dr. Zeeta as she preferred. I could tell Hope and baby girl would be in good hands with her. There was just something so pleasant and gracious about her that made me feel safe knowing two of my most prized possessions would be cared for by her.
“And I’m thankful to have you here honey. Your aunt hasn’t stopped talking about you two, so really, I’ve been very excited to meet you. I’m going to take good care of you and your little blessing, I can certainly promise you that.” She smiled encouragingly before turning to exit the room. Once she shut the door, my gaze shifted to Hope who was now lying there, staring at a 3D sienna colored ultrasound picture that Dr. Zeeta had given her.
“Are you completely happy with this decision?” Her voice was soft and mild, gentle enough to have me staring at her almost in a daze. But, I was thrown off by her question…
“What?”
“We’re having a baby in less than two months. Are you happy? Is this what you wanted?” Her face looked so pleasant and surprisingly, she didn’t even look like she was gonna cry… which I was expecting, based on the questions she’d just asked and the tone of her voice.
My brows furrowed and I sighed… I didn’t even know if I was really supposed to answer that or not… I didn’t know if she was really serious.
“I’m happy.”
“Is this what you wanted?” She repeated, this time smiling. I nodded as I stood and slowly made my way closer to her. Her left hand extended in search of mine and when I gripped hers, she pulled me even closer and planted my hand flat against her still exposed belly.
“Yes, I’m happy… and this is what I wanted.”
“Are you sure?”
“Hope, I…” She was truly leaving me at a loss for words because I didn’t understand where this was coming from, “I want this more than anything in life… you know that.”
Her smile spread even wider and I stared at her perfectly straight, white teeth as they nibbled into the center of her bottom lip “I know… I just really like to hear you say it, the way you do.”
“What do you mean?” I chuckled.
Her silly grin remained as she slowly guided my hand around the smooth surface of her belly “I don’t know… I just like to hear you talk. Everything you say sounds so… good.”
I was blushing big time and thought my face would either permanently turn red or I would just pass out. I wasn’t even completely sure how to respond to that, so I just stood there smirking as she slid her hand up my arm and used it to pull herself up.
“Can I have a kiss?” My heart froze, or sped up, hell I wasn’t even really sure because before I knew it she was tugging me down to her and her cozy lips were pressed sweetly against mine. This girl was gonna be the death of me!
--
Hope said she wanted chicken fries and a vanilla milk shake from Burger King and French fries from McDonald’s, so that’s where we went after her appointment. I think I was more excited than anyone could ever understand to cater to her during her pregnancy. Call me weird, but I’d always envisioned this very moment… me pulling up to the window at a drive-thru, collecting whatever she craved from the menu all because she was carrying my child. Whatever she said she wanted, I’d go to the ends of the earth and beyond to get it just to see her happy… because that’s exactly what made me happy.
I sat with her now on the couch in her aunt’s den. Her feet were propped up in my lap and she stretched comfortably along the length of it with her back propped against a few pillows and her variety of food items, which included a chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookie from McDonald’s, laid out on pillow. I ordered food for myself and simply propped it up on the thick arm of the couch because I wouldn’t dare have her move her feet… I was the one who conned her into resting them in my lap in the first place.
We ate together in a comfortable silence with the action-packed sounds of Captain America: Civil War playing in the background. And this was completely ideal for me… home with her, watching movies and pigging out, because that’s what she wanted to do.
“Hey, baby daddy…” I turned to face her and nearly choked with laughter at the silly grin plastered on her face, “I just love how that sounds.”
“You’re so silly.” I chuckled, quickly swallowing down a mouthful of food.
“You never told me how your birthday was.” She blurted randomly.
“It was alright.”
“Did you do anything special?”
Thinking back to that day, my twentieth birthday, a regular Friday for me because I wasn’t too keen on making a big deal of it, I smirked at the thought.
“Not really. Just dinner that my mom insisted on dragging me to. Tootie was there, and your aunt, and the crew… and Mrs. Jimenez brought Jaylen.”
“Well that’s good…”
She didn’t say anything after that and I quickly turned to face her. The expression on her face looked so… distraught. Like she was stuck somewhere between confused and upset and that worried me.
“Hey, did I say something wrong?” I asked, biting into my bottom lip nervously as my heart raced unnecessarily.
She shook her head and sighed, glancing over at me with that same twisted expression “Sorry to change the subject, but… I kinda wanted to talk to you about that.”
My brows furrowed with confusion and I stared at her, waiting to hear what it was she wanted to talk about.
“That whole thing with Gabby… I don’t know, I don’t want to make a big deal of it. It’s just that the last time we talked about her, I could tell you were pretty upset about the whole situation. And… it upset me to know that you were upset.”
“I didn’t mean to make you upset…” “No,” She said, quickly shaking her head, “You didn’t upset me… she upset me. The whole thing upset me, not you Charlie. I didn’t like the thought of her attacking you the way she did. And I don’t like the thought of her thinking it’s okay to speak to you that way or just loosely toss threats at you whenever she wants. That wasn’t right and… if you don’t mind, I would really like to speak to her about that.”
“I… I don’t know if that would be a good idea Hope…”
“I just want to talk to her Chris. Obviously, me and you are in this for the long run and I’m not going anywhere anytime soon… I feel like it’s kind of my duty to protect you, just as much as you’ve always been there to protect me.”
I stared at her, perhaps too long and too hard because she eventually sighed and turned to face the TV. I didn’t understand, why I guess… why she felt the need to protect me. I mean, I knew I was nothing special, but clearly she didn’t and I didn’t want her going through any trouble for me because I honestly didn’t even feel like I was worth it.
“I just don’t get why you’d want to protect me. I’m not worth that effort Hope.” I muttered pitifully and finally dropped my gaze down to my lap.
I could feel her eyes on me now and I heard her soft grunt as she carefully shifted herself around on the couch to get closer to me. I didn’t bother to face her, even when I felt her petite hand slither up along the back of my neck.
“You don’t mean that… you can’t. You are worth more than the last breath in my body Chris… look at me.”
I didn’t look at her because I couldn’t look at her because I suddenly felt way too depressed. Her nails grazed along the skin of my neck and up into my hair, then I felt her right hand tickling my chin and she gently turned my head so I had no choice but to face her. But I refused to open my eyes… I refused to let her see the emotional pot she was stirring within me.
“Look at me…”
I shook my head slowly, feeling myself slipping further into my dark pit of despair. God, I hated these illnesses… I hated how much they controlled my life now and how fast they could send me spiraling in one emotional direction or another. It’d never been this way before. I’d only recently been diagnosed, but my illnesses had obviously been with me most of my life… so why was I now suddenly getting so caught in my feelings all the damn time?
“I’m not a good dad Hope,” I whispered, eyes still closed like a little boy hiding from his worst fears, “I’m not worth it.”
I felt it then, one of my biggest fears and insecurities that I’d only recently discovered in the last year… she dropped her right hand down to my left wrist and lifted it right up to her face. My eyes shot open and I quickly sniffled, because I felt the heated tears ready to force their way out at any second. My lips were parted and I could feel my chest heaving with desperation, but I was completely frozen in time… unable to do nothing more than sit there and watch her.
She held my wrist delicately in her hand, close to her mouth so that I could feel the warmth of her breath tickling my damaged skin. In almost slow motion, she leaned in closer and pressed her soft, sweet lips against my skin. She pecked it over and over, her lips dancing over the ugly ridges that were still clear as day through my tattoos.
“You are worth it…” She whispered and pecked, “You are a phenomenal man, an extraordinary father, and you are worth it.”
For the first time since I’d left the marks there because I didn’t think I was worth it and I didn’t think I deserved my life, I felt… worthy. In the eyes of the one person in the entire universe I cared most about, I was worthy. I meant something to someone, and it was her… I meant something to Hope. It hit me like a freight train just how selfish I’d been to come so close to an unnecessary death and I felt a wave of regret and nausea.
Easing my arm out of her grasp, I shifted my hand up to her cheek and down to the cusp of her neck and jaw, the same way she loved to hold me… the same way I loved for her to hold me. Gently tilting her head forward, I leaned a bit closer to her and pressed my lips against her forehead.
“Tell me again.” I muttered,
“You are worth it Charlie… you’re a beautiful man, you’re my beautiful man, and you are worth it.”
I smiled… shut my eyes and grinned then told her not to stop. It was like pure sizzling gold pouring from her lips. It was the injection of life that I needed to survive. She was meant for me and I for her… because she believed I was worth it.

Where we belong

A/N: I was really planning on turning this into something very deep and profound and slightly angsty about the perils of being a parent. But then I was just so Fed Up with angst, and decided to tackle my writer’s block the only way I know how: fluff. I hope it’s still enjoyable <3
Summary: A little slice of life. Charlie is a baby and the whole Shelby family comes to visit. Linda has a delicate disposition, John continues to be inappropriate. Finn climbs a tree. Alfie and Tommy have an exceptionally wonderful child.
Pairing: Alfie/Tommy,
Wordcount: 5700
AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/13370709/chapters/30619590
A shrill cry digs itself into the peaceful darkness surrounding him, and Alfie fights to open his eyes. It’s absolutely impossible. Someone has sewn his eyelids shut. His hazy brain struggles to make sense of the sound, decipher what it means and what he’s supposed to do about it… He shifts uneasily.
“I’ll take care of it.” Tommy’s voice whispers right next to his ear. Soft lips brush against his cheek. Then he finally manages to open his eyes to see Tommy already getting out of bed, decidedly more awake than Alfie himself.
“’s okay,” he mutters and sits up, rubbing his eyes. “Think it’s my turn.”
“Go back to sleep,” Tommy says with a tired smile, pulling his dressing gown on and wrapping the strap tautly around his narrow waist. “Counting on you to be sociable tomorrow. Or, well, today.”
Then he pads out of the bedroom on bare feet, as Alfie remains seated on the mattress, too dazed to make any decisions of his own. He doesn’t lay back down though, holding his breath as he listens to the cries. They stop after just a short while. Deciding to forgo sleep a little while longer, already being awake and all that, Alfie swings his legs over the edge of the bed.
Soft mutters seep out from the nursery and he finds Tommy there, walking slowly to and fro over the carpet, rocking Charlie gently in his arms. The moon casts silvery tendrils of light over his pale features, shimmers in the silk as it moves with his steps. Allowing himself to simply stand there for a moment, Alfie feels a smile stretch across his lips. If he was ever tired, he forgets about it completely at that moment.
“Thought I told you to sleep,” Tommy whispers, eyes still fastened on Charlie’s peaceful face as a smile plays in the corner of his mouth. “How else are we going to live through having my family here today?”
“Just enjoying the view, is all.” Alfie does thoroughly enjoy it. “As a husband and a father it’s my prerogative to watch my better half take such great care of our child.” Coming to stand right next to Tommy, he smooths his palm over the lean muscles on his back, the silk slipping easily under his fingers. “Especially when he looks so stunningly beautiful while doing so.”
With a soft outlet of air that could be either a sigh or a laugh, Tommy lays Charlie down in his crib, fingers ghosting gently over the rounded cheek before they reach to pull the blanket up around him. Alfie draws him close to his side as they both linger for a while. The baby shifts in his sleep, tiny fingers grasping the blanket and mouth opening in a yawn. Somewhere in his chest, he feels an almost painful clench.
“Can you believe it?” he sighs, nose buried in Tommy’s disheveled mop of hair. Tommy smiles.
“No. Don’t know if I ever will.”
Despite the nightly escapades, Alfie awakes early the following morning, blinking in the pale sunlight as it shines through the curtain. Maybe this ridiculous new schedule has finally ingraining itself into his body? Though his heavy eyelids and muddled brain say otherwise. A happy babbling is coming from the nursery –Charlie is as per usual awake before anyone else. Alfie slips out from the comfortable heat under the duvet, careful to not disturb Tommy who is still sleeping peacefully. Tommy stirs a bit when Alfie moves, curling up slightly when the familiar body disappears from his grasp.
Charlie lets out a particularly loud noise –albeit still a happy one- and Alfie tears himself away from the sight of his sleeping husband and goes to take care of his son.
In the crib, Charlie has rolled over onto his stomach and is now fully occupied with chewing on the corner of his pillow.
“Good morning, love.” Alfie picks him up and earns a happy squeal. He shushes him gently, “Hush now, let’s see if we can get papa to sleep for a little while longer, hmm?” If Charlie agrees, he’s not doing much to help this endeavor, continuing to announce his happiness about the prospect of a new day with incoherent noises.
Cyril follows them downstairs, and while Alfie prepares Charlie’s breakfast he lets the dog out into the garden to watch him scare the life out of some poor magpies as he runs laps around the lawn.
“Alright. I firmly believe, that you and I as a team, can do this.” Alfie sets the porridge down in front of Charlie, seating himself next to the high chair. “Know that this is an ongoing battle, but let me just tell you: I won’t be the one giving up.” Charlie frowns, clumsily grabs the spoon and bangs it against the table. The display makes Alfie chuckle. “Don’t know why you’re so displeased, love.”
He gently pries the spoon away from Charlie’s little hand, as always marvelling both at how strong those tiny fingers are, and how something so adorable can even exist in this world. Scooping up a miniscule amount of porridge in the spoon, he begins the long process of trying to get it from the bowl to Charlie’s belly.
A little while later, half of the porridge has ended up on Alfie’s face, the other half on Charlie’s, and very little in Charlie’s mouth. But Alfie had the foresight to make a rather large portion this time, so hopefully it’s still enough. Charlie seems completely at peace with having most of his breakfast covering his face.
“This is a very interesting way to eat.”
Alfie looks up to see Tommy leaning against the doorframe with an amused smile on his face. Completely dressed in a waistcoat and trousers, sadly. Although, Alfie supposes that keeping the silk far away from Charlie in any situation involving food is a rather sensible idea.
“Well, it’s this new method, innit, where the food is just sort of absorbed through the skin.” Alfie gestures towards his own rather sticky beard to emphasize this.
Charlie uses Alfie’s momentary distraction to catapult a spoonful of porridge at his face, hitting him square in the eye. It’s only luck that he’s wearing his glasses. Highly offended, Alfie looks at his son, who seems entirely pleased with himself.
“This is the thanks I get, eh?” Alfie takes his glasses off and surveys the mess. “You are highly unappreciative of my efforts.”
Laughing softly, Tommy comes to pick Charlie up, unconcerned with the large amount of porridge adorning both his face and hands.
“He’s worse than you with food,” Alfie states, depositing the bowl in the sink.
“Don’t remember ever trying to eat with my entire face,” Tommy quips. “Let’s get you cleaned up, love,” he then says to Charlie. “Let your daddy get all that gunk out of his beard.” Babbling happily, Charlie puts both hands on Tommy’s face, smearing porridge all over him.
“Oh, it’s fine, been covered in far worse things, haven’t I?” Alfie fills the kettle with water and puts it on the stove top, before turning around with a question already forming on his lips. “I can-“
“Alfie, it’s fine,” Tommy says, voice filled with calm reassurance, and Alfie continues with his initial plan of making him and Tommy breakfast.
“Well, I suppose we better brace ourselves,” he states as he produces a whisk and a bowl. “Whole Shelby clan coming to invade our house and all.”
“God help us,” Tommy mutters in a quite convincing impression of Linda. Alfie snorts out a laugh.
“I wouldn’t ask him, if I were you.”
Apparently, a baby is the kind of occasion that requires full attendance, and so a few hours into the afternoon, the house is swarming with children, adults, and adults behaving like children (John). Ada has come all the way from London, profusely apologizing on behalf of Jessie who’s tied up in something. But she promises to come around soon bearing inappropriate, radicalizing gifts.
For now, the characteristic chaos following the Shelby clan wherever they go is manageable, as the children are out playing in the backyard with Cyril, leaving only the adults to stir up trouble in the kitchen. They are gathered around the table to marvel at the wonder that is the newest member of the family. Arthur and Linda’s boy lingers too, seating himself in his father’s lap to get a good look at this clearly very interesting little person.
Charlie giggles where he sits in Tommy’s arms, legs dangling over one of them and back propped against Tommy’s chest. He is seemingly enjoying the attention. Arthur insinuates that maybe he doesn’t quite understand what’s going on, to which Alife responds that this is the most intelligent child ever to have existed in all of England, so of course he understands.
Alfie fulfils his duties as host by making tea and ensuring that the whole lot gets fed.
“Don’t tell me you had time to bake this?” John groans when Alfie sets down a basket of bread, the corner of his mouth twitching when he sees the excited glint in Finn’s eyes.
“Yeah, well it’s mostly just waiting, innit.” Alfie shrugs, seating himself next to Tommy on the kitchen sofa and wrapping an arm loosely around his waist. He reaches out to let Charlie grab onto his fingers. “Bet even you could wrap your head around it if you gave it a try.”
“You’re setting impossible standards for husbands everywhere!” John complains through a mouthful of bread, which leads to him and Esme getting into a little discussion concerning John’s lacking skills in the kitchen.
The others leave them to it, still fully focused on Charlie.
“He’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen with my own two eyes!” Ada squeals and caresses his cheek gently, eyes shining. She receives some looks from the other parents. “Yeah, yeah settle down, all your babies are adorable. Let me just have this moment.”
“Where did the baby come from?” Billy wonders, tugging at his mother’s dress sleeve. He looks from her round belly to Tommy. Then back again. “Did Tommy have him in his belly?” Linda has the sense to answer before any of the less equipped parties –her husband- attempts to do so. Or John has time to make some smart comment.
“No, the baby was in a special house, for babies whose parents can’t take care of it.”
Alife feels the tiniest shift under his hand as Tommy tenses up and notes the twinge of unease in the pit of his own stomach. This could be going in an unpleasant direction…
“That’s really sad,” Billy states, eyebrows sloping into a concerned frown.
“It is. All babies should have someone who takes care of them and loves them,” Linda says solemnly. “But the good thing is that people who want a baby can go there, and the baby gets to come home with them.” She smiles reassuringly at her son. “So, now the baby is here with Tommy and Alfie, and that’s good, isn’t it?”
The knot in his stomach unravels and they share a quick look, him and Linda. A moment of mutual understanding.
Billy nods thoughtfully and smiles.
“Yeah. That’s very good.”
The door to the garden flies open and Sam shows up on the threshold, bouncing up and down.
“Billy, stop looking at the baby and come play with us!” he pants, clearly having run across the lawn. “I’ve only got Cyril on my team and he doesn’t understand the rules.”
“But I’m not done yet!” Billy complains and stares a bit more intently at the small human in Tommy’s arms, as if to ingrain it in his mind.
“Why don’t you go out to your cousins?” Arthur says and lifts Billy off his lap. “Baby’s still going to be here when you get back. And you’ll have your very own at home, soon enough.”
Satisfied with this, Billy leaves the kitchen. But not until he’s managed to convince Finn to come with him. It’s an extra treat for all the nephews and nieces when uncle Finn visits, because he can run really fast, climb trees and is an expert at building tree houses. Naturally he’s popular among the kids. And will most likely be gone for the rest of the afternoon.
When they’ve watched Finn get dragged away from his chair and close the door behind him and Billy, John turns to Alfie with a bright grin.
“So, how’s fatherhood treating you, mate?” He slaps Alfie’s back, a wicked glint flashing in his eyes. “You used to spending the nights up changing nappies instead of between Tommy’s legs?” Arthur coughs very loudly.
“John!” Tommy covers Charlie’s tiny ears for some reason, looking uncharacteristically appalled at his brother’s insinuations. John’s eyebrows shoot up.
“What? It’s not like he understands?”
Linda has gone an alarming shade of red and Esme kicks her husband under the table. Polly and Ada are as always greatly amused by Linda’s delicate disposition.
“I’ll have you know that I take very good care of Thomas, don’t you worry,” Alfie retorts with an indignant huff. The nerve of some fucking people…
“Oh, come on, no way that you’re getting it nightly.” Yeah, John’s just doing this to fuck with Linda, the poor woman. Alfie would bet his left foot on that. Though Tommy doesn’t seem very amused either, so he bites back any witty responses and takes a mouthful of tea instead, settling with giving John a pointed look and a quirked eyebrow. John can make what he will of that.
“Well, I’m very glad we could squeeze this subject in, somehow,” Tommy mutters. “Now let’s please talk about absolutely anything else.” He turns his attention back to Charlie, his expression softening.
“Don’t mind him,” Linda says, gladly taking the opportunity to change the course of the conversation. “It can be difficult, the first few months.” The blush creeps down her neck. “And- I not just the-“ she clears her throat, bless her soul. “The- well, the-“
“Sex?”  Polly smirks, and now it’s Arthur’s turn to look disapproving.
“Yes.” Linda regains her bearings with a calming breath and a gulp of tea. “Well, of course it’s important to make time for each other, but there’s a lot more-“ she goes on for a little bit on the subject of being a new parent, and they all indulge her. “…It’s all a matter of practice, I think. It can be rough to begin with,” she finishes off.
“It… hasn’t been too bad,” Tommy says before Alfie can do so.
“Bullshit, you’re not telling me he’s this saintly all the time?” Arthur chuckles. “Give him here for a bit.” He reaches out and Tommy carefully deposits Charlie in his arms, hands cradling him as if he were made of glass.
Charlie lets out a happy gurgling noise when Linda shifts closer to and allows him to grab onto her finger. The blush on Linda’s cheeks has faded and she smiles down at the boy, unconcerned with the drool she’s now getting all over her wedding ring.
“Nah, but…” Alfie tries to pick just one of the many things on his mind to say: What’s a few midnight wake up calls and a face full of porridge, and sticky fingers all over your clothes when you’ve got a fucking child? Your very own child. That you’ve longed and waited for fucking years to have in your life? And when you look at that child, it feels like your heart may just swell enough to break your ribcage, and you suddenly just understand what it’s all about…
“It’s worth it,” Tommy fills him in with calm certainty, looking up just as Alfie’s eyes shift to his face. And their eyes meet for a moment in that silent understanding. Arthur gives a response and the conversation keeps going around them. But Alfie isn’t aware of it right then.
The teapot is emptied and then filled back up, a bottle of whiskey is brought out, allowing for a glass or so. Charlie gets to sit in everyone’s lap and finds himself stunningly in the treatment, just as happy to tug at Esme’s long braid as he is burying his fingers in Ada’s suit jacket. An incredibly well behaved and all around wonderful child, he is. And Alfie is the luckiest man in the entire world…
It’s not until an early dinner has come and gone that Charlie begins to fuss a bit, screwing his face up and whining as he waves his hands in protest of his current situation.
“Think there’s been enough excitement for today,” Tommy says then, reaching out to carefully take the baby from Polly as she lifts him off her lap. Getting to his feet, he cradles him against his chest and rocks him gently. Charlie immediately settles down, yawning and blinking slowly. Tommy leans down and gives Alfie’s cheek a quick kiss. “I’ll put him to bed.”
As he leaves the room, Alfie hears him speak softly to Charlie. “Yeah, I understand how you feel. People are exhausting… Should we read something before we go to sleep? That book about the dog, maybe?”
Alfie’s eyes linger on his retreating back and then the empty doorway, his heart feeling so big and light that it could probably lift him out of his chair.
It’s not until someone clears their throat behind him that he realises he’s not alone in the room and his attention snaps back to the family. He is receiving looks. Ada is grinning so wide it looks like her face will just fucking split in two.
“What?” he grunts and tries to hide his reddening cheeks behind a teacup. “Can’t a man enjoy the view of his husband leaving a room without being fucking scrutinized?”
“It’s just nice being surrounded by such domestic bliss,” Polly says with a quirked eyebrow and sips on her tea. “Glad that I’m staying over to soak it in properly.”
The briefly paused conversation picks back up right where it left off, but Alfie is honestly too exhausted to join. Sitting down for longer periods of time sends his mind into a sleepy blur. It’s not too bad though, just to be seated there and listen to the myriad of familiar voices. Arthur is currently talking about cabbage, he thinks, giving a more detailed description of the ins and out of growing this crop than anyone could ever wish for.
Something crosses his mind.
“Oi, Arthur, a word.” Alfie nods towards the door leading to the garden, and despite looking a bit befuddled, Arthur follows him out of the kitchen and onwards out onto the gravel surface bordering the grass. The sound of the children laughing travels across the lawn from the edge of the garden. Finn has been roped into a game of tag and is chasing Billy down as the boy squeals happily.
“So, I’ve got a request of sorts, yeah?” Alfie says, rolling his shoulders to wring the tension from his back. “Or, me and Tommy have one. Of course it’s more of a question, right. And Tommy didn’t want to make a whole big thing out of it-“
“Out with it, mate,” Arthur urges him, a crease appearing between his eyebrows. “Getting me all worked up over here.”
“Well, the thing is,” Alfie begins, tugging at his beard as he suddenly finds himself struggling to find the right words. “The world’s a scary fucking place, innit? Sure, I’d like to think we’ve eliminated a lot of risks by moving out here, to the middle of goddamn nowhere. But you never know, right?” He scratches his chin. “And if something should happen to me and Tommy, we’re going to need- I mean, Charlie is going to need someone, yeah? To take care of him.”
Arthur for once doesn’t interrupt, but lets him stand there and ramble.
“And we were wondering if you and Linda could do it,” Alfie finally says. “You know, be his… godparents or what have you.”
Arthur opens his mouth to take a gulp of the cooling air, blinking. Then he nods tightly, and turns to look very intently at the large oak tree, squinting in the light of the setting sun. His jaw clenches tightly, lips pressing together into a thin line. He blinks rapidly. Fuck, if Arthur starts bawling now, Alfie may just have to shoot him, if only to save himself from doing the same. Should’ve insisted that Tommy took care of this instead. Much more stable when it comes to shit like this.
Taking a shaky breath and crossing his arms over his chest, Arthur finally speaks up.
“I am-“ he pauses to swallow and take another equally unsteady breath. “Emotionally compromised right now…”
The words hang in the air for a long moment, and then Alfie bursts out laughing, slapping Arthur’s back hard enough to send him stumbling out onto the lawn.
“Yeah, well, just give me the answer any time. Soon as you stop being-“ the laughter bubbles up again, drowning the words, and he just barely manages to choke out, “Emotionally compromised. Fuckin’ell, mate.”
Returning the shove with equal force, Arthur breaks into a fit of laughter too. And they stand there like two fucking idiots, giving the kids a run for their money. Alfie blames the sleep deprivation.
“Of course,” Arthur says on a long intake of air once the fit has subsided, wiping tears from his eyes. And who’s to tell where they came from? “Fuck- of course. God fucking forbid I ever have to make good on this promise. But of course.” He shakes his head, hands coming to rest on his hips as his eyes flicker to the ground. “Bloody hell, you can’t just spring these sorts of things on me, you wanker,” he continues. “Stick to being a fucking pain in my arse instead.”
“Think I’ll stick to being a pain in your brother’s arse. Know my way around that by now.”
“There we go.” Arthur emphasizes his words by jabbing a finger at Alfie. “Right back to the inappropriate fucking bullshit. That’s the man I know and occasionally don’t want to murder.”
A little while later, John and Arthur with their respective families say their goodbyes. Which in itself takes about half an hour, as all the children need to hug everyone, Rose’s shoe is missing, Billy’s cap is lost somewhere in the garden and Sibyl lies face first on the hallway floor and announces she’s too tired to walk anywhere, even to the car. Sam is the only one cooperating, having found a very large stick that he’s eager to bring home to his collection. But eventually, John finds his oldest daughter’s shoe, Cyril sniffs out the cap and Esme hoists her youngest up on her hip, takes her son by the hand and they can be on their way.
Alfie is left with Ada, Finn and Polly as they clear the kitchen table. It’s right about then he realises that Tommy has been gone an awfully long time. Maybe he should check in on him, make sure Charlie isn’t being fussy… Then again, he definitely doesn’t want to give him the impression he doesn’t trust Tommy to take care him. Tommy has done enough of that sort of thinking himself. But fuck it, this debate will lead nowhere. He excuses himself.
Leaving the lively kitchen to walk upstairs to the peaceful quarters of the second floor, Alfie listens for any sounds of cries. It’s completely silent.
The door to the nursery is ajar, and he carefully opens it, popping his head into the dimly lit room. Tommy is asleep, curled up in the armchair next to Charlie’s crib, boots deposited on the floor and the book tilting in a slack grip. Planting his feet on the threshold, Alfie takes in the sight. A slight breeze is seeping in through the window, stirring the mobile over Charlie’s crib and making soft shadows dance on the wall. Charlie is sleeping just as soundly as his father, sprawled on his back with the tiny arms over his head.
He just barely manages to resist the urge to pinch himself.
“Think me and Tommy are calling it a night,” he announces to the remaining family members in the kitchen, where the atmosphere is decidedly calmer now.
“What time is it?” Finn looks out the window with sudden confusion. The golden light filling the garden is slowly giving way for a colder, bluer tone, but it’s far from dark yet.
“Well, we’re on a bit of a different schedule at the moment,” Alfie states. “But you lot all know where you’re sleeping, and where the whiskey is. So I’m sure you’ll be fine.”
“Sure we will.” Polly gives him a dismissive wave and a decidedly sly smile. “Go take care of your husband instead of worrying about us.”
Tommy is still sound asleep when he returns, and Cyril has joined him in the nursery, snoring peacefully next to the crib. Quietly crossing the floor, Alfie closes the window, before walking up to Tommy’s sleeping form and leaning down to kiss his forehead. There’s a slight flutter to the long eyelashes. Tommy curls up a little tighter. But he remains asleep. He doesn’t even wake up when Alfie scoops him up into his arms and carries him across the hallway to their bedroom.
It’s not until Alfie puts him down on the bed and begins to unbutton his shirt that he opens his eyes, propping himself up on his elbows and looking with confusion at his new surroundings.
“What’s going on?” he wonders, voice laced with sleepy gravel as he slumps back down onto the mattress.
“Oh, just giving you some assistance getting ready for bed, love,” Alfie says and maneuvers his pliant limbs to push the suspenders off his shoulders. “Getting to be somewhat of an expert at that aren’t I? Can’t even fucking count the times you’ve been too out of sorts to do it yourself.” He unbuttons Tommy’s trousers, fingers moving automatically as they carry out the familiar motions. “Some things never change, I suppose.”
Tommy gives him an absolutely lovely, sleepy smile and lifts his hips, allowing for Alfie to pull his trousers down over them. Familiar, this too.
After removing his own clothing, Alfie crawls into be next to him, feeling as if his entire body sighs at the pleasant sensation.
“It’s too early to sleep,” Tommy mutters and nuzzles Alfie’s chest, his heavy eyelids contradicting this statement. “You could…” he yawns. “You could go downstairs if you’d like.”
“Oh, there’s no place I’d rather be, you know that sweetheart.” His arms find their normal position around Tommy’s body, anchoring him in warmth. “And you heard Linda. It’s important to make timefor each other.”
“Who knew there’d be a day when you took advice from Linda?” Tommy mutters, half asleep already. Before Alfie can answer, his breathing has deepened to a soft, rolling wave. Alfie falls asleep soon thereafter.
He wakes up and is suspiciously well rested, and that’s honestly bloody concerning. As a rule, Charlie wakes up at the crack of dawn and lets his fathers know that he’s quite finished being in bed, and demands that someone pays attention to him immediately. This silence is suspicious to say the least. Groggy from the unusual amount of sleep, he climbs out of bed and makes his way to the nursery. When he finds the crib empty, he experiences a moment of complete and utter dread, before his brain catches up with him. The house is full of people, someone else has taken care of him.
He finds his missing son in the kitchen, seated in Polly’s lap.
“Good morning,” she says brightly. “This little man let me know he was awake when I passed by, so I figured I could fulfill some of my grandmotherly duties while I was here. Let you and Tommy sleep for a while.”
Charlie laughs and extends both arms towards Alfie, making a noise that with some imagination could be the start of the word ‘daddy’. Someone less perceptive may have said it’s just a gurgled ‘da!’, but Alfie knows better.
“Morning love.” Alfie beams and picks Charlie up, hoisting him very carefully into the air. “Already up and about I see?” Charlie announces in his usual incoherent way that he is indeed very up and about. Alfie presses a kiss onto his nose before handing him back to Polly and goes about preparing himself for another battle of wills over a bowl of porridge.
Soon, Finn and Ada come to join them, and the usual morning pleasantries are exchanged as Alfie prepares Charlie’s food and Polly takes care of the rest of the breakfast. Finn entertains Charlie by letting him sit on his lap, and gently bounces him up and down as he tells the other occupants of a dream he had. Never really grew out of things like that; in so many ways he still is the excitable ten year old Alfie first saw at the top of that stairway all those years ago. Alfie is grateful for a whole lot of things, and that is just one of them.
“Luckily, I woke up right then,” Finn concludes the story just as Tommy comes into the kitchen.
“Morning, love,” Alfie looks up from the stove and cranes his neck just slightly to allow for Tommy to give him a chaste kiss.
“Morning.” Tommy’s hand brushes lightly over his shoulder in passing. “And good morning to you, Charlie.” Alfie can hear the smile in Tommy’s voice, and he’s greeted with a happy squeal.
The bright hours before lunch are spent out in the garden. Alfie mentions a dead branch on the oak tree, just in passing, but Finn jumps on the chance of cutting this down, happily climbing the trunk as if he were twelve again, while Ada and Polly look on from the ground.
Alfie stays on the ground too, bundling Charlie up in several layers of clothing to combat the early autumn chill and settling him on a blanket on the lawn. Strange, to be beaming with pride at someone being able to sit upright by themselves, but Alfie finds himself doing so nonetheless. Charlie watches the spectacle in the tree with great interest, pointing at his uncle every now and then as if to ask Alfie if he’s seeing this too. Alfie nods each time, telling Charlie that yes, that’s uncle Finn, and he’s just a little odd like that but we love him all the same.
“It was May,” Tommy says as he sits down next to them, returning from a phone call. “Wondered if I could come by the stables.”
“Well, I think we’re okay here. Got a whole team, don’t I?” Alfie says and nods towards Polly and Ada. Finn is not a force to be reckoned with right now. He’s definitely reverted into a child himself up in the tree.
“It can wait.” Tommy shrugs. “Said we’d take care of it on Monday.”
Alfie lets out a gasp, clutching Tommy’s shoulder with feigned urgency. “Who are you and what have you done to my husband?”
Charlie crawls with impressive speed towards the edge of the blanket and snatches a dead leaf from the lawn that he studies with cross-eyed fascination, before attempting to put it in his mouth.
“No, love, that’s not for eating,” Tommy chides softly and takes the leaf away, replacing it with a small rabbit plushiewhen Charlie scrunches his face up. Charlie settles for this and begins chewing the rabbit’s ear as Tommy pulls him into his lap. Something stirs in Tommy’s eyes, a thought clearly brought on by Alfie’s comment.
“Sorry, sweetheart,” Alfie says. “Didn’t mean to turn that into a whole thing.”
Tommy shakes his head in a tiny gesture. It’s fine. Let it go. He lets it go.
Over by the tree, Polly is now calling for Finn to come down before he falls to his death, as her youngest nephew is climbing as high as he possibly can among the branches. Ada threatens to remove the ladder and leave him up there. Finn just laughs at them, heaving himself up yet a bit higher with a strong arm.
Alfie has more than once announced to himself that this this is the happiest moment of his entire life. His and Tommy’s wedding day. First night in the new house. The day they brought Charlie home… Every single fucking day that he gets to be alive and have Tommy there. It’s already an extensive list. This is going on there too.
“Can you imagine, eh? One day we’ll probably sit on this lawn and watch Charlie climb up there,” Alfie muses and nods up towards Finn, shielding his eyes from the sun with a hand. Tommy says nothing. But they both look down at Charlie, who gives them a gummy smile and raises both arms. Then up at Finn, who is currently just showing off,  hanging by his knees from a branch. Then back to Charlie.
Tommy clears his throat, “Maybe we should-“
Alfie nods tightly, “Cut that tree down?”
“Definitely.” “Unnecessary for it to take up this much fucking space.”
Charlie tries to clamber up onto Alfie’s lap, and he helps the endeavor by giving him a little push. He keeps the hand on Charlie’s back as he pulls himself upright by the lapels of Alfie’s coat, face set in stubborn determination and then breaking into a smile as he succeeds. Albeit with some subtle assistance from Alfie. Shuffling a bit closer, Tommy leans against his side, sighing as he watches Charlie cling to Alfie’s coat.
“But then I guess we’d have to chop down the whole bloody forest,” he contemplates, adding as an afterthought, “Not that I wouldn’t do it.”
“I have no doubt.” Alfie runs a thumb over Charlie’s petal soft cheek, pulling down the hat a bit over his ears. “Suppose you can’t realistically chop down every tree in England. So I guess we’ll just have to make sure he knows how to climb them properly, yeah? Without falling down.”
Tommy smiles.
“Yeah. I suppose that’ll have to do.”

Baby’s First Fic Rec List
Well Hello There! Somehow I made it to 366 followers!! I intended to do this celebration for 350 but, y’know, life, holidays.... So here it is now!
I haven’t been around this fandom very long, but I have never felt so at home and welcomed by a fandom. I’ve also spent the last year or so reading Destiel fic like it was my calling, my passion, my civic duty. Fun fact: when you dive into a fandom with 12 years of accumulated fanfic, there’s a deep deep well to draw from.....
And so, in honor of 350(ish) followers and my first year(ish) with this fandom, I present to you this list of recommendations! Just some faves and things I enjoyed reading . All are Destiel. Most are smutty. Mix of canonverse and AU, fluff and grit, plot and silliness. Some preference given to fics with fewer hits/kudos/comments than I think they deserve.
Happy reading!
....The Non-Smut....
mistletoe & peppermint cocoa by navylights Rated T 5.5k Summary: Cas and Dean are on a mission: to pick up the perfect Christmas tree for their first Christmas with everyone alive and well. And while Cas and Dean are out shopping, and buying cocoa on a snowy afternoon, a certain meddling younger brother is putting up mistletoe in the bunker.(Or, the absurdly fluffy Christmas carols/cocoa/mistletoe/tree decorating/Christmas lights fic of your dreams)
Dean Winchester’s Secret (Angel) Boyfriend by reluctantabandon, Winter_of_our_Discontent Rated T 11.2k Summary: Dean Winchester isn't exactly a team player. So when he starts mentioning a new Hunting partner, Ellen and Jo Harvelle aren't sure whether they should be worried or relieved. But they're starting to get the feeling there's something important Dean's not telling them about Cas... (Reccer’s note: It’s kind of rare to see really excellent extended-cast ensemble work in fanfic. But this? This is that.)
Raisin D’etre by starsinursa Rated G 1.1k Summary:  Apparently, Castiel hates raisins. (Reccer’s note: THIS IS THE CUTEST THING ON TWO LEGS.)
....Absolute Faves.....
Our Bodies, Possessed By Light by obstinatrix Rated E 40k Summary: Purged of all his souls, Castiel is a changed being, stronger than an angel and too powerful for Jimmy's body to contain. Happily, there's an archangel's vessel on hand, and he could use fixing, too. Dean isn't too happy about the idea of his brother acting as a vessel for Castiel, and Sam can guess why, but it isn't until Castiel gets inside his head and they learn to share the vessel -- and their thoughts -- that Sam realises Cas is as in love with Dean as Dean is with him. It's unfortunate that there's nothing much to be done about it now, but Castiel will get another vessel soon. The Winchesters will make damn sure of that. In the meantime, it's up to the three of them to establish their own strange accord, and Dean realises more fully than ever that it's Castiel, and not his vessel, that he loves. (Reccer’s note: Don’t let the premise squick you. This is very CLEARLY a Destiel story, in spite of Sam’s front row seat. I love all the relationships in this fic, Sam and Dean’s brotherly antagonizing/affection, Sam and Cas’s growing friendship, Cas and Dean’s straining, passionate adoration. All three of them are superbly written, but Cas especially. This also has some of the most scorchingly hot not-quite-sex ever written. Seriously. How can something be so fucking hot when everyone’s wearing two layers of clothing? Beats me.)
Rock ‘n’ Roll Queer Bar (series) by ChasingRabbits Rated E 126.7k Summary: Ellen and Jo Harvelle run Harvelle's Roadhouse, a bar that unintentionally becomes a beacon for wayward queer souls. Her employees: Dean, the smartass runaway with a big heart and bigger mouth; Castiel, the college drop-out turned hippie; his (surprisingly heterosexual) trouble-making brother Gabriel; and Charlie, who has been told several times that the back room is not to be used for after-hours Dungeons & Dragons games. But there's a lot of love in this place, and a new family for anyone who may otherwise be without. (Reccer’s note: The description doesn’t really do this series justice. This is the most realistic and beautifully and believably written long-term relationship I have ever read. They go through so much together, and they do it all TOGETHER. It’s beautiful. I devoured this in a day and a half, then went right back to the beginning and read it all over again. It’s Just. That. Good.)
Lots more under the cut!
....Shorts....
Angel-Mine by reluctant Rated E 4.3k Summary: Cas exhaled. "When an angel's wings are injured," he said to his feet, "the healing process can be augmented by… grooming, I suppose, would be the most accurate word. Removal of the maimed feathers to allow growth of healthy ones. Otherwise, they're left to fall out alone." He tilted his head towards the nightstand. "As you see." Dean stared at him. "So… that's why I can't help?" he said slowly. "'Cause I can't, y'know… see 'em? Or touch 'em?" "Yes," Cas said, slightly too quickly, and Dean snorted. "You're still a shitty liar, Cas," he informed him. "What ain't you tellin' me?"
Casturbatus Interruptus by smallhorizons Rated E 6.1k Summary: post-9.01, in a slight AU wherein Cas comes to live with the Winchesters at the Bunker. Written before 9.03. Crossposting from Tumblr. Written for a prompt from hightopsandsharpies: "Okay, so Cas is a virgin, and has no idea what pleasure is and Dean decides to show him and Cas gets all cuddly and needy afterwards." Dean walks in on Cas masturbating. He’s doing it all wrong, but when you’re a bazillion-year-old virgin, that’s to be expected. Dean decides to lend him a hand in a totally platonic, non-romantic way. Things get a little out of control.
Angelus Domini by xylodemon Rated E 3.2k Summary:  "You're a fucking dick," Dean says, right to God's face. (Reccer’s note: In which Dean and Sam gain some heavenly grace and Dean and Cas don’t waste any time at all.)
we can watch the white doves go by xylodemon Rated E 2.7k Summary: "Wait," Dean says, just as the door snicks closed. It comes out as barely whisper; he clears his throat and tries again, a little louder this time. "Cas, I -- wait."
Oh! Darling! by castielsdemons Rated M 6.6k Summary:  Now that Castiel has fallen, Dean wants to let him know how much he cares about him. And if it takes two or three (or eight) tries to get it right, then so be it. Or, the seven times Dean tried to tell Cas he loves him and the one time he actually got it right.
....Mid-length....
The Curious Case of Dean’s Missing Libido by thejabberwock Rated E 7k Summary: It’s been weeks since Castiel told Dean he loves him. Weeks since Dean answered him with a kiss. It’s been weeks, and they haven’t had sex.
Pronoun yourself out of this one, Dean by zation Rated E 11k Summary: When Dean gets hit by a gender-swapping witch spell it not so fun for anyone, until it’s kinda fun. Or, The one where Dean gets to discover a whole lot of new things. Like what nice hands Cas has, for instance.
Freckles by 2spooky4u Rated E 7k Summary: "I had to draw all them perfectly," Cas insists, and Dean suddenly can't get rid of the image of Cas, clutching on to a Crayola washable marker, jamming it into his skin forcefully like a little kid mashes his markers on the paper in a vehement attempt to make the color deeper. "And now you're insulted 'cause I don't appreciate 'em?" Dean asks, bewildered. "No," Cas lies petulantly. "Huh." The stubborn child version of Cas Dean has painted in his mind is now clutching his paper possessively, shielding it from scrutiny. They drive in silence for a while. "Thank you for making my freckles," Dean grouses finally, knowing that it's the only way Cas will forgive him. ((((OR, IN WHICH CAS LIKES DEAN AND HIS FRECKLES, AND DEAN IS STUBBORNLY HETEROSEXUAL))))
Sam Accidentally Sees the Whole Picture by almaasi Rated E 10.4k Summary: Sam's been through a lot lately, what with tonight's hunt rendering his skin an aching shade of purple and all. He can deal with Dean being overly concerned about Cas' broken finger, and - God help him - he puts up with the sound of their preposterously soppy love confessions and first kisses on the adjacent bed. But he cannot be expected to remain silent and feign sleep throughout the entire duration of their first-ever lovemaking session. He just can't. Especially not, because it seems apparent that Cas is more intent on deflowering himself than letting Dean do it.
The Things We Did (But Never Spoke Of) (series) by BadassCompany Rated E 17.9k Summary:  Now and then, when there is quiet from the bloodshed and chaos of the world, I think of Dean Winchester. About the things we did; beautiful, glorious, rough skin and wet lips; but never spoke of. He didn't want to talk, only to feel, and I didn't know what to say. ~A partially complete series of canon compliant smutty oneshots.~
worthy by jad Rated E 14.8k Summary: "... you wanna what, now?" Dean asks, because he definitely didn't hear that right.Castiel tilts his head, a leftover tick from his angel days that Dean would be lying if he claimed to find anything but idiotically endearing. He knows this is his own fault, owing to that rather memorable moment a week ago when Cas wandered into this very same kitchen with a (fairly) legitimate question and Dean just didn't know when to shut up.
The Adventures of Real Anal Sex (Starring Dean and Castiel) by tiptoe39 Rated E 9.7k Summary: This is how it really happened. Because this is how it really happens. Thanks for the tweet, Astroglide -- product placement is now yours! (Reccer’s note: Adding some of the relevant tags: Awkward Sexual Situations, yes people go to the bathroom in this fic. Butt stuff ain’t always Harlequin Romance perfect, but honestly? It’s better that way.)
Go with the Flow by starsinursa Rated E 7.6k Summary: The smug bastard obviously think he’s won this argument, because there’s no way Dean is following him into a yoga class. The day Dean starts saluting the sun and humming ‘om’ under his breath like he’s part of some creepy hive mind like the Borg Collective, well, he might as well just start making his own potpourri and frequenting vegan bakeries, too. Not gonna happen. So yeah, Cas is right, damn him. There’s no way in hell Dean is following him into a yoga class. There’s no way. There’s no way –- ahhh, fuck. Fuck it all.
....Novellas/Novels....
Oxymora by thejabberwock Rated E 27.6k Summary: Good things don’t happen to Dean, so he’s not even surprised when Cas tells him he misunderstood the I love you. (Reccer’s note: This hurts so good. The payoff is worth the pain. Warning for Dean/others.)
riptides by sharkfish (waitforspring) Rated E 39.9k, WIP Summary: “I’m going to kiss you now.” Cas pauses, giving Dean a chance to back out, but Dean just licks his lips and waits. Cas’s mouth is up against Dean’s for a couple seconds before Dean responds, and then it’s Cas that’s being kissed senseless, because kissing is definitely not something Dean does tentatively. Dean reaches up to cup Cas’s jaw in his hand, tilting his head for a better angle, mouth plush, tasting like whiskey. Cas tries to remember what it was like the first time he kissed a man. All-encompassing, the world jerking off its axis, the feel of stubble under his fingers intense in a way it never really is with women, as much as he loves them.
Cabin Fever by Dangerousnotbroken Rated E 35k Summary: Due to a romantic-comedy level booking blunder, grumpy stress-case Dean and reclusive writer Castiel end up shuttled off to the same remote cabin for two weeks, and nobody seems to care that neither of them wants to be there. But since they’re stuck in the same cabin for the duration of their vacation, they might as well play nice and make the best of it right? Wrong. Dean’s so stressed out he can’t sit still, Cas can’t boil water without setting the place on fire, and they’re so on each other’s nerves it’ll be a miracle if either of them survives until their rides home arrive. At least the tension is just social, and not sexual, right? Right?
traveling light by sharkfish (waitforspring) Rated E 42.8k Summary: Cas is, impossibly, far more gorgeous in person, and he’s taller than Dean expected, and he moves with this casual grace that makes Dean’s brain short circuit. So Dean thinks he probably looks a little like a deer in the headlights when Cas catches his eyes from the door of the restaurant. He breaks out into a smile, the full, wide one that never came out in his pictures, and Dean actually goes weak in the knees. “Cas,” Dean says.“Hello, Dean,” Cas says. (Reccer’s note: Cas is FtM trans in this story and it gives me... so many feels.)
What Once Was Sacred by saltandbyrne Rated E 55.8k Summary: Los Angeles detective Dean Winchester works tirelessly to atone for the sins of his father one case at a time. When his best friend Charlie drags him to visit Sam at his new job, Dean stumbles onto a bizarre string of deaths that brings him uncomfortably close to his past.Dean can't stop thinking about Castiel, an enigmatic DJ who plays the sexiest music Dean's ever heard. A chance encounter at Castiel's house reveals that Castiel is an incubus, and Dean must face the lies and the reality of his childhood as a hunter. Dean comes to see that he and Castiel have more in common than he thought, and that guilt can be the hardest thing to cast aside.
the taste of gravel in the mouth by beenghosting Rated E 22.4k Summary: This is what Cas gave up Heaven for: greasy diner food, shitty motel rooms with even shittier cable, long car rides spent in complete silence except for the same six tapes playing over and over again, and a burnt-out husk of a man who can barely hold a conversation anymore. (Reccer’s note: Warning for angst.)
PWP: Pie Without Plot by MajorEnglishEsquire, orange_crushed Rated M 82.5k Summary: he is in the kitchen with flour on his hands and an apron and there is flour on his forehead and cas leans across the counter and wipes it off with his thumb and dean says "thank you" and cas says "you’re welcome" very seriously and later dean makes apple turnovers and he only ruins them a little and sam realizes it’s not a real hunt like four days into it and he lets dean stay undercover for like a week and a half or longer maybe way longer because he is such a good everything (Reccer’s note: Warning for fluff.)
Strangers on a Bus by Terene Rated E 59.7k Summary: Castiel is flummoxed. This is a social situation he is not equipped to handle. What is the protocol when the stranger sitting next to you on a bus, whom you incidentally find very attractive, falls asleep with his head on your shoulder?
And now, a Shameless Self Endorsement.  Hope you stop by. ^__^

Christmas Movies: A Complete Holiday Streaming Guide
By Alec Bojalad and 1 other
Well, because we’re a little crazy, we’re working on an index of every Christmas movie and other piece of seasonally appropriate holiday-themed film available on various streaming services. Just bookmark this page, scroll on through the alphabetical list, hit the links, and it can be Christmas whenever you need it to be! And if you spot some stuff that we missed, just let us know in the comments and we’ll see about getting it all added for you.
Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)
Hulu
What is it about the holidays that makes it feel like we’re on the verge of the end of the world? Regardless, if you’re going to capture Christmas season ennui in a movie, you might as well go all out. That’s exactly what British holiday film Anna and the Apocalypse aims to do. Anna is a Christmas zombie musical comedy. Because why have one genre when you can have them all?

Run Review: Sarah Paulson Terrifies as Mommie Dearest in Hulu Movie
By Don Kaye
Ella Hunt stars as Anna Shepherd, a secondary school graduate who plans to embark on a grand travel tour before heading to university. Those plans come to a grinding halt, however, when a zombie infection starts to spread throughout her town. Anna gets together with some friends as they try to survive both the holidays and the encroaching zombie apocalypse.
Black Mirror: White Christmas (2014)
Netflix
Those looking for Christmas cheer won’t find it here. Black Mirror isn’t necessarily known for its happy endings and it’s 2014 Christmas special, “White Christmas” is no different.
Still, there is an audience out there that definitely wants this level of Scroogery. Plus it stars Jon Hamm! “White Christmas” follows three seemingly disparate stories. Jon Hamm is Matt, a mysterious man with a mysterious job who viewers watch in three different environments: once as a gross pick-up artist helper, once as a digital “cookie” salesman, and once as an occupant in a cozy cabin on Christmas Day.
What do all of these have to do with Christmas? Watch and find out. Then weep for the collapse of humanity.
A Charlie Brown Christmas Special (1965)
Apple TV+ – Arriving Dec. 4
“A Charlie Brown Christmas Special” is one of the most enduring holiday classics in the pop culture canon. Originally airing in 1965 on CBS, it was an experiment from The Coca-Cola Company to see if Charles M. Schulz’s beloved Peanuts characters could carry their charm over to a new medium…and boy could they.
The half-hour picks up with Charlie Brown down in the dumps and unable to capture the Christmas spirit. Thankfully, his friends know just what to do. Soon ol’ Chuck is directing the school Christmas play and nabbing a pitiful Christmas tree with Linus. This is “A Charlie Brown Christmas Special’s” first year as primarily a streaming entity, though Apple TV+ is allowing it to air on PBS on Dec. 13.
The Christmas Chronicles (2018)
Netflix
If a Christmas movie is only as good as its Santa (surely someone out there abides by this rule), then Netflix’s The Christmas Chronicles is one heck of a Christmas movie. This family film produced by Chris Columbus features Kurt Russell ascending to his final form as Hot Santa Claus.

The plot follows two children who are struggling to believe in the magic of Christmas after the death of their firefighter father. But the spirit of the season seizes them when they encounter the ultimate stand-in father figure: Kurt Russell Santa. The Christmas Chronicles is your classic, by-the-book family holiday yarn with a fun actor at the center and elevated production quality. Its sequel is also available to stream on Netflix.
Doctor Who Christmas Specials
HBO Max
If the British know one thing, it’s tea. If they know two things, it’s tea and Christmas specials. Many big-time U.K. television shows have their own excellent holiday specials. Decades-old sci-fi institution Doctor Who, however, takes the cake when it comes to Christmas excellence.
HBO Max has 12 seasons worth of Doctor Who Christmas specials dating all the way back to the modern continuation’s first Doctor, Christopher Eccleston. Each episode is an hour-long treat of Doctor Who and Christmas goodies and should the joy of watching them ever peter out, there are plenty of bonus materials to watch as well.
Frozen (2013)
Disney+
Frozen, an animated movie you might have heard of, technically takes place during summer. But it sure doesn’t feel that way after Queen Elsa freezes the fjord and belts songs about the snowmen she and her sister want to build. Indeed, there is hardly a more festive film for the holidays than this celebration of self-love and familial love. Rather than being the story of a princess falling for a prince, Frozen is about the love between two sisters, Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell), and how that bond can transcend fear, isolation, and lifelong trauma like losing your parents at an early age.

Frozen 2: ‘Show Yourself’ Song Was Almost Cut from Movie
By David Crow
Fairly sophisticated stuff for an animated movie, Frozen became a bona fide classic in large part due to its songbook by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, with “Let It Go” standing out as an anthem for self-empowerment and the realization of identity. And if you overlook the fact you heard that song probably five thousand times, it still has that same resonance, which is why children are drawn to its message, as well as Elsa’ irresistible ice powers brought to dazzling life. When you factor in Anna’s own awkward charm, the power the two radiate together is warming in any season.
Home Alone (1990)
Disney+
Another holiday classic from Fox, Home Alone remains a millennial touchstone for this time of year, and a gift that keeps on giving. Yes, everyone remembers the end where Macaulay Culkin tortures two bumbling goons (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) as if they’re Elmer Fudd, but the movie has a lot more going for it than just slapstick sociopathy. Indeed, when Kevin McCallister isn’t being a sadist, this film has an earnest appeal about celebrating the fantasy of a kid living by himself at home.
When his parents leave Kevin McAllister home alone for Christmas—it was an accident!—he has a luxury house to himself that he lounges about as if it were a giant playground with free ice cream, pizza, and R-rated movie viewing parties. Things go a little pear-shaped though when crooks try to rob the joint, but he handles that in glib fashion, all while sweetly pining for his mother. In fact, as you get older, Catherine O’Hara’s trials and tribulations to get back home to her baby boy in time for Christmas are as amusing as Kevin’s hijinks. (John Candy! Polka music!! Polka Christmas music!?!) But probably the reason this is a real classic has a lot to do with John Williams’ eternally heartwarming score.
Into the Dark: Pooka! (2018)
Hulu
The concept of Hulu horror anthology series Into the Dark is a simple one. Starting in October, every month would see the release of a new horror movie, usually revolving around a theme or holiday within that month. So naturally December 2018’s entry, Pooka!, brings its chills to Christmas. Directed by Nacho Vigalondo from a script by Gerald Olson, Pooka! introduces one of the cutest creepiest critter since Gremlins.
Struggling actor Wilson Clowes (Nyasha Hatendi) takes on a job operating a giant fur suit of a toy company’s upcoming holiday season to, Pookah. Pookah has two modes, naughty or nice. Soon Wilson comes to find that the suit is starting to effect his overall mood and the naughty mode may last outside the confines of the suit.
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
Amazon
Now if you could only watch one Christmas movie every holiday season, it’s gotta be this one, right? It’s a Wonderful Life has been a winter staple ever since…shortly after its 1946 release. The film infamously took a little while for audiences to catch on they they were in the presence of a classic. And now it lives on Amazon for the time being as the go-to spot for holiday cheer.
If you haven’t watched this movie in a while, it can be surprising just how tenuously tied the whole thing is to Christmas. Though the story of George Bailey begins on Christmas Eve 1945, the movie takes audiences throughout the entirety of his life, Christmas Carol-style. But of course, in the end the angels have gotten their wings and Christmas is in full thrall. Certainly, It’s a Wonderful Life will be all over the traditional TV calendar, but it’s nice to know that it’s on streaming as well for those who just can’t wait.
Klaus (2019)
Netflix
Since the hallowed days of Rankin/Bass stop-motion animated Christmas specials, there hasn’t been much movement or innovation in the realm of animated Christmas movies. Klaus, written and directed by Sergio Pablos, seeks to change all that in Klaus.
This crisply animated feature serves as an alternative history version of the story of Santa Claus. Jesper (Jason Schwartzman) proves himself to be the worst student as a postal academy and is sent to the North Pole where his lack of letter-delivering abilities won’t do anyone any harm. There he discovers Klaus (J.K. Simmons), a mysterious carpenter who lives alone and likes to make handmade toys. Sounds pretty familiar.
Klaus is both a technical marvel and an effective little Christmas story.
Last Christmas (2019)
HBO Max
Shortly after taking in the cheerful trailer for Emma Thompson and Paul Feig’s 2019 holiday hit Last Christmas, the Internet stood up as one and agreed on an important point: there’s a twist in here, isn’t there? And of course, the Internet was right…as it so often is.
Last Christmas features a very prominent and important twist in its plot that you’ll have to watch the movie (or read Wikipedia) to figure out. But twist or no, this is a perfectly enjoyable entry into the modern Christmas canon. Emilia Clarke takes some time off from torching King’s Landing to star as Kate, an aspiring young singer going through hard times around Christmas. That all changes when she meets the alluring and devastatingly handsome Tom (Henry Golding). What follows is a minor Christmas miracle.
The Santa Clause (1994)
Disney+
Tim Allen really was on top of the world in the 1990s, wasn’t he? The star of ABC’s popular Home Improvement sitcom, and just a year away from becoming a Pixar legend in Toy Story, Allen could get any family entertainment greenlit. Thus enters Disney’s The Santa Clause, a movie that posits “what if Tim Allen became Santa?” That’s pretty much what happens when Allen’s schmo-y Scott Calvin inadvertently is responsible for the death of the previous Santa who slips off his roof.
The consequence of Scott’s mistake is he puts on the red and white outfit to finish Santa’s sleigh ride that night, much to the delight of his son Charlie (Eric Lloyd). Little does he know that by donning the suit, he has entered into a “Santa Clause” which means he becomes the big guy—literally so as he gains 100 pounds of weight and a white beard overnight. It’s still amusing now, but our favorite bit will always be David Krumholtz as the no-nonsense North Pole elf from Brooklyn.
Surviving Christmas (2004)
Amazon
One enduring hallmark of the Christmas movie genre is how bad many of its entries are. Of course, there are some well-executed classics that command one’s attention and respect, but for the most part they all blend together into a pleasant cheerful mush that can be on in the background while one decorates their tree.

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: November 2020
By Alec Bojalad
But even by the dismal standards of Christmas movies, 2004’s Surviving Christmas is particularly dismal. This Ben Affleck/James Gandolfini starring vehicle very much earns its 7% Rotten Tomatoes score. In a way, however, that makes it a must-watch holiday classic. Affleck stars as a rich advertising executive looking to reconnect with his past. What better way to do so than to pay the current occupants of his childhood home to spend Christmas with them? Much James Gandolfini grumpiness ensues.
A Very Brady Christmas (1988)
Hulu
A Very Brady Christmas was a 1988 made-for-TV movie that brought together the entire original cast of The Brady Bunch save for Susan Olsen (Cindy Brady). Olsen was on her honeymoon at the time and I cant’ figure out if that’s a great reason or a weird reason to miss a once-in-a-generation TV event.
A Very Brady Christmas centers on a very simple and very relatable concept: getting the whole family back together for Christmas. This is a hard enough logistical challenge for a “normal” family, and a damn near impossible one for a family with six kids. Will the Bradys be able to pull it off? Watch and find out!
Yes Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus (1991)
HBO Max
“Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” is one of the most enduring sentences in Christmas history. It comes from an 1897 newspaper editorial in which The Sun (of New York) editor Francis Pharcellus Church responds affirmatively to young Virginia O’Hanlan’s question about the existence of Santa Claus.

This 1991 TV movie of the same name dramatizes the already-quite dramatic story. Charles Bronson, of all people, stars as Church, who is dealing with the death of his wife and the trauma he endured as a war correspondent during the Civil War. It turns out that one little girls credulous belief in the impossible is all that many adults need to get back into the spirit of the season.

Story on Wattpad
Maggie.
It was a very well know fact that Donald can rock a suit, any color, any day, he was a piece of eye candy when he wore one. What I didn't expect was him elevating his hotness level to a million when he wore a turquoise swimsuit I'd bought him. It'd been so long since I'd seen him with a swimsuit that I'd forgotten how amazingly well he fitted the trunks.
He was not amused or maybe too amused by me drooling all over him when he put them on along with a white shirt, specially when he carried our baby around and his biceps peaked out off his shirt.
God, he was the hottest thing in the world.
We had to postpone our weekend out for one more week, and I silently hoped Don wouldn't be called in to do whatever. So far we were good, and we were hauling the remaining things in the car, Don was holding Alma, who had the cutest sunhat ever and I'd dressed her in a swimsuit along with a summer dress.
Don stopped in the middle of the path to the car and snuck his hand on his pocket, also looking at Alma making the face... Yeah, that face.
He looked at the phone and as I walked the remaining steps to him he quickly handed me the baby.
"Look who's got a present for Mommy" he said cheerily.
"You were holding her whilst she was doing it it's your turn"
"I've got a call from Cooper, I'll owe you" he excused, I squinted at him and held the baby. As I turned around to quickly change Alma out of her diaper, I heard him answer the call.
When I finished, I headed out again and saw him finish, waiting for me near the car with the door open.
I walked next to him and looked at him, he gave me a little smile and I motioned at the both of us.
"If you have to leave then it's your loss, we've got our swimsuits on"
He snuck his hands under Alma's arms and pulled her, then laid her in the car seat and began to strap her to it.
"I've also got my thing on, I'm not going anywhere"
"Oh this thing?" I said and shamelessly squeezed his ass "Hadn't even noticed"
He had perked up and given me a sly smile, but kept at it with the straps until he was finished, I made my way around the car and sat in the passenger seat, waiting for Don to finish.
I heard Alma began to complain in the chair, I turned around in my seat and moved the toys she had propped up against the back of Don's seat.
"Did you close everything?" He sat in the driver's seat and put on his seatbelt.
"Yeah baby, we're good to go" Alma mewled, then let out a cry. Alma absolutely hated the car chair, but she usually stopped crying when the car got in motion.
"Where's the rendezvous point?" He asked. He couldn't just ask like a simple person where we were meeting my sister to go to the camping site.
"Seward square, at eight hundred" I joked. I heard him let out a little chuckle and his hand landed on my thigh.
"Roger that"
"Did I forget to mention it's not just us?" I said after a while on the road "my sister has neighbors who she's friends with and they have one daughter and one boy so they invited them to play with theirs"
"You did forgot, but it's okay, if anything is good to have mediators on site"
"Mediators?" I mocked.
"I mean, isn't your sister still not in good terms with Ethan?"
"They're working it out"
"Well, it's better to have more people then, to break the tension"
I felt him squeeze my thigh when we were nearing the square, we saw my sister and her neighbor in the square and Don honked at them. My sister was supposed to lead the way because she'd made the reservation, after that, we had a good half an hour on the road.
"When are you done with the casino?" He asked, I just shrugged and looked on the rearview mirror at Alma.
"Probably within the next month, after the security stunt I'll be relieved of everything though"
He hummed, letting me know that he'd heard. I led my hand to his neck and his shoulder.
"Why love?"
"Cooper called" he began "he wanted to check on me, see how I was doing. He also told me that since it's been two weeks ever since Liz went into the coma and she hasn't waken up, and since Reddington is still with his whole 'I only speak with Elizabeth Keen' thing, Cooper told us we can go and do other things if we want."
"And how are you doing?" I inquired, he gave me a smile and patted my thigh.
"I told him you were keeping me distracted and that I was okay. I'm with my family, what else can I ask"
My hand left his neck and held his hand, leading it to my lips, kissing it.
"And what are you gonna do?"
"I'm thinking about leaving for a few days with you and the little cupcake"
"Oh really?" I said surprised. Alma began mewling again and I turned on the seat, I extended my hand to her and patted her thigh. "We're almost there baby"
"Don't make me turn this car around" Don said next to me. I laughed at him, I guess he never missed an opportunity to make a dad joke.
Don stopped the car at the entrance of the camping site. My sister had rented one of the biggest cabins they had. It had three bedrooms for the three couples of adults and one bedroom with a few bunk beds for the kids. It had a kitchen and a dining room, it didn't have a TV because the fun was supposed to be outside, with the pool and the creek a few yards away, the forest. For children these days none of those things sounds fun, I remember explicitly the times when my dad came to my room and said 'we're going camping tomorrow' and I couldn't sleep from the excitement.
After Don parked the car near our cabin, I unbuckled my belt.
"Wanna secure the perimeter and I'll take care of the package?"
He smiled at my silliness and unbuckled his.
"I think your sister is already doing that, I'll help you deploy resources instead"
I chuckled and walked off the car, going around it to Alma's side.
"Is this all this technical talk because I said where's the rendezvous point?" He held the door open for me as I unstrapped Alma, who was already wailing her arms around and pouting.
"If that's how you want to talk baby, I won't judge you"
I took Alma in my arms and looked at her.
"What's all the fuss about little lady" I said when I saw she was about to start crying again. She pouted instead. "Don't pout at me" I kissed her cheek and a little down to her jaw, she was ticklish there.
I closed the door and watched Don head to the back of the car and start to take out the groceries.
I headed to the entrance and met my nieces. They were just in time to open the door for her dad, we all met in the kitchen and there my sister introduced Don and I to her neighbors, Wendy and Charlie. The children were nowhere to be seen, but I guess they didn't want to help clear everything.
Much to Don's distaste I pulled out the bags of clothes from the car still holding Alma to my side, and carried it to the furthest room down the hall. After I plopped the bag in the bed and turned around and stumbled into Don.
"Anything else?" He asked.
"Yeah, just Alma's crib and we're done."
"And why this room?"
I smiled and handed Alma to him.
"It's the farthest from the kids' room and I mean, these people are like almost forty, they don't get laid"
He began walking out, I followed him.
"I mean, if your hypothesis is that people over forty don't get laid, we're almost out" he said over his shoulder
"Yeah, you wish" he surrounded my waist with her arm and kissed the top of my head "I'll take Alma's crib" I said when we reached the dinning room. I didn't see Don again until maybe an hour later, he'd busied himself with the barbecue along with the other men, and we took care of the salads and the other things inside. We didn't eat lunch inside, we had two foldable tables and took the chairs outside. I was doing one of the many trips to take the plates outside when I saw that the sun was hitting hard today, I looked around, not seeing Don and the baby around our cabin.
"Where's Don?" I asked Ethan, he just turned his head around and pointed at the pool area.
"He went to the pool to tell the kids food is ready"
I doubled back and walked to the pool, Don came into view after a few steps. Alma had a look of wonder on her face I'd hardly seen on her.
The kids in the pool were splashing eachother and throwing a ball, screaming in joy. Alma suddenly flayed her arms around and let out a cry, it surprised me and much as it did to Don, judging by the look he gave her he must've noticed that she at least got my overall excitement for almost anything.
I rarely gushed about Alma when we were out and around other people because that could easily get annoying, but when we were alone I would non stop tell her she was the most precious and most beautiful thing in the world. Everytime she smiled it was the most rewarding thing, and the first time she laughed, I almost cried. She and my husband were my world.
Don walked to me as soon as he saw me at the edge of the pool, Alma followed the water with her eyes as he walked along it.
"She really likes the pool" I said when he reached me.
"She does, did you hear her scream?" Don said looking at her and changing her from one arm to the other. I leaned in and kissed her cheek.
"I'm starving" I said.
"Yeah, I know. Kids come on!" He called in.
Talia and Wendy's daughter Emma were the first ones to come out of the pool. Don waited for the kids to come out and I headed back to finish with the table.
"So Maggie" Wendy said from across the table, I was getting Don's meal prepped because he was holding Alma still. "Madison said you're an architect"
"I am" I replied with a smile "I'm working on the casino and the hotel that's almost finished in DC"
"Oh yeah, we've seen that, that's amazing, it's a huge project"
"Even bigger since she did all of that whilst pregnant" Don chimed in. I left the prepared hamburger on his place and cleaned my hands on my lap. He saw me do that and gave me a scolding look.
"Wow, that must've been hard, when I was pregnant with Emma I could barely do anything"
"She made it look easy, that's how amazing she is"
I gave him a little look as I felt my cheeks turn red. I took Alma in my lap looked down at her.
"How long have you guys been together?" Charlie said pointing at us in one quick motion.
I settled Alma to nurse her, covering my side and her head with my the thin blanket I always had on her. Then I looked at Don with a little smile.
"And? How long?" I teased him.
"Well. We've know eachother for maybe 6 years now. We dated for a year and four months and we will be one year married in two weeks"
"And your baby is how many months old?" Wendy asked.
"She's about to be 3 months old"
"Wow, shanked immediately" Chuck said "it sucks, having to take care of a child already, not having time to enjoy married life and being alone, happened to us."
"Well, the clock was ticking down for Mags so"
That got laughs out of everyone, I knew what Don was doing. Those were invasive questions aimed to make us feel like 'you don't know what's married life is like' and a big consortium of other things that I'd already gone through with my sister. So Don, being a typical Scorpio, cracked jokes to lighten the mood. I of course, sometimes followed him because I wasn't about to get roasted just for laughs.
I felt his arm go around my shoulder and he kissed me in the temple, letting me know that he was joking.
"You're 37 by the way" I peaked under the blanket to find that Alma was fast asleep. She'd been awake almost all morning at the ride here, so I knew she was going to sleep for at least three hours. "I'm going to put the baby down"
Don was fast to stand up to pull my chair when I stood up. After I placed the baby down and got the monitor all set up, I headed back to finish our lunch. We were all half way done when the kids asked to go to the pool. My sister have them the whole 'you'll get cramps' speach, but Wendy was an actual doctor who had debunked that millenary myth. She'd also vouched for beer helping with milk production so I could happy drink one, giving Don a winning smile as I asked him to open my bottle.
After a while, I was starting to feel the heat in my body, so I quickly jogged inside and pulled out the sunscreen and my tanning spray.
"I'm going to the pool, wanna come with me?" I said looking down at Don, he just made a motion and shook his head
"We're going" my sister said. I undressed and stood in my bikini in front of Don.
"Can you put tanning lotion on my back" I said, he stood up and motioned at the bottle, I squirted some on my hand before handing him the bottle. I took care of my chest and my stomach whilst Don did my back, I suddenly felt his hands in both my glutes, rubbing the lotion over them and the back of my legs. I gave him a look over my shoulder, he shot me a playful smile. "I can take it from here" I said turning around. He handed me the bottle with a wink.
"Have fun cupcake"
I made a little twist of my lips and leaned in to him.
"There's no fun without you" I smiled and kissed him, feeling a little smile om his lips. "When Alma wakes up take her to the pool"
"I will" he said, sitting back in the chair next to Ethan. My sister, Wendy and I walked to the pool, I had my towel in my hand and I could already tell that people, mostly men, were going to be looking at lot at me. I'd gotten most of my figure back, I'd definitely lost all the baby weight and I felt good about myself again, and in the light of that, I used the red bikini with wide white rims that I loved, and I loved it specially because the thong frames my glutes quite nicely and I knew that Don liked it as well. I settled in one of the lounge chairs and laid on my back, already feeling my skin absorb the sun rays.
"So, how are you and Ethan?" I heard Wendy ask my sister, I'd disconnected with my sister's marital issues like Don had advised me, and I was very surprised when I head my sister say:
"Therapy is doing nothing, the therapist said that if Ethan didn't wanted to work anything out she couldn't make him so... I guess we're splitting up" I opened my eyes and lifted my hand to block the sun, looking at my sister and Wendy talk next to me "right now Ethan is getting every settled, a new place and everything, and I guess we'll have to take the kids to some kind of counseling as well. We don't want them this to affect them much, specially Talia who's old enough to understand why we're not behaving like a married couple"
"That sucks Maddie, but you'll see this is the best for everyone, because eventually things could turn nasty between the two and the kids would end up in the middle"
"Yeah, it's the best, even though I hate to admit it." Maddie said with a sad sigh, I stopped looking at her and closed my eyes again.
"Mom! Are you coming?" I heard Nathan yell from the pool.
"Yes baby I'm coming right now" she yelled back, after a few minutes I felt she'd left my side and left me sunbathing alone at the side of the pool.
I loved sunbathing, it was one of my favorite things to do in the summer, even if I didn't exactly go on vacations, if I had a spare hour in a summer afternoon I'd throw the towel in the back garden lay down and loose track of time, much like right now.
I'd turned around on my back when I thought I'd already gotten enough color on the front, and after I thought was a few minutes I felt a shadow being cast on my legs.
"Tell momma we're going to the pool" I looked over my shoulder and found Don standing with our baby in his arms looking like a snack.
"Already?" I said lifting myself up from the chair.
"It's been more than two hours, she took a long nap." I ran my hand on my hair to pull it up on a ponytail, watching Don dance his eyes on my body. I turned on my heels and gave him a look over my shoulder.
"Thought you might like a look from the back" quickly enough I felt his arm around my waist and his chest pushing into my back. I smiled at him from over my shoulder and turned around again.
"I don't know what you're doing-"
"You know exactly what I'm doing" I interrupted, rounding the free shoulder he had and tiptoed to him, he held me close to his chest.
"I'm pretty tempted to not go into the pool at all"
I pressed my lips to his shortly, then pulled back and held him by the hand.
"We have time to do both"
