thrawn: earning as many doctorate & masters degrees as possible (he loves being able to say that he’s a master at everything from art history to underwater basket weaving - & he has the diplomas to prove it)

eli: the dying crafts list + being the one person preventing so many crafts from not being practiced anymore (he tries to teach them to the sky-walker girls with varying degrees of success)

ar’alani: women’s sports in general, but also really niche sports (you know she was playing pickleball way before everyone else, but now that it’s kind of popular she’s moving on to like roller derby or something)

wutroow: the duolingo owl - not the app, the owl specifically (even though she speaks like 5 languages already & will 10000% learn another just so she can gossip without other people being able to eavesdrop). also chappell roan.

che’ri: spontaneously chopping off all your hair in the bathroom at 2am (&& probably giving yourself bangs too for good measure)

samakro: renaissance festivals (you know he’s got a giant turkey leg in one hand, a mug of ale in the other + is booking it to axe throwing)

thalias: modern adaptations of jane austen novels (no one appreciates yearning like she does)

faro: driving late at night with your windows down & a killer playlist blaring (bonus points if it like just rained & you can smell it in the air)

ba’kif: sam reich on game changer (he wants his cedf officers to experience just a fraction of the stress they put him under so badly)

thrass: the headspace meditation app (also under so much stress, but handling it in a very different way)

thurfian + zistalmu: the reesa teesa ‘who tf did i marry’ tiktok series (this much hot goss? for free?! they’re sat)

I finished reading Chaos Rising today and I absolutely loved it. It was so gripping and I really enjoyed seeing how Thrawn came to be the character we know him today. Also loved Ar’alani and her origin.

My favorite new characters are definitely Thalias and Che’ri. Both are sweet and their relationships with Thrawn are intriguing. Thrawn teaching Che’ri how to fly reminded me a bit of Tech and Omega. And the call back to Thalias being the young sky-walker Thrawn inspires was touching.

Also, Thalias taking care of Che’ri was cute. She’s such a sweetheart.

One of the most interesting aspects was the Chiss Ascendancy. In way, they’re like the Empire. The Chiss view anyone who’s not them as lesser. It struck me when Ar’alani admitted that seeing the Garwian culture was the first time she saw other beings as people. However, the Chiss don’t have the Empire’s cruelty. They only care about protecting themselves and don’t believe in preemptive strikes. It was cool to see Chiss culture though and the trial born process.

Thrawn himself was my favorite aspect. I can’t stress enough just how much I love him. Aside from his incredible smarts, he holds strong to his way of doing things. Thrawn IS different and Zahn won’t let us or the characters forget it. But Thrawn’s way of looking at problems and love for art make him incredibly compelling and interesting. I also love how mentors other characters and gives them new perspectives. I love him so much.

I think my favorite moments of the book was when Anakin tried saying Thrawn’s name, Thrawn taking Ar’alani to an art museum and her reaction to it, and when he taught Che’ri how to fly.

Anyways, I’m so excited for the next book!

Rereading Thrawn Ascendancy and I think the only reason Timothy Zahn don’t have Thrawn and Thalias adopt Che’ri is because he didn’t want to type/look at Thcheri.

I feel like there are two possibilities for how Vah’nya is able to remember her brothers despite being a sky-walker

1) (and the less nice one) is that because of Vah’nya’s strong (and continuous) connection to the force she has slowly regained parts of her memories possibly via dreams/visions, but she still doesn’t have the full picture.

2) (the nice one) after Thrawn’s exile, Thalias, Borika, and Che’ri are able to start reforms on the Sky-Walker program in some way (possibly going public about it?? everyone seems to know Vah’nya is a navigator but I don’t think she’s ever called a sky-walker which is interesting) and might have gotten rid of the fading process, hence why Vah’nya still has her memories
