La Festa Alla Cinque Cibi!

The Festa Alla Cinque Cibi was a success! Everything came out at least close to what it ought to be and all was delicious. Plus I had forgotten I wanted to make a sauce for dipping the fried artichoke leaves into, but the sauce that the beef cooked in came out so flavorful and nice that I just poured out a little bowl of it and used that for dipping.

It is a somewhat monochromatic meal. I probably should have included some kind of non-fried plant or something.
The artichoke was a bit spiky but those buttery inner leaves were perfect. The beef almost didn't come out -- I thought I'd ruined it by browning it too much and making it tough, but then in the last half hour I bumped the temperature on the slow-cooker and the collagen almost immediately began to melt, turning it much more fork-tender and velvety. I'm very much looking forward to leftovers on sandwiches. The burik reheated well, but are also pretty good cold.
And the ricotta cheesecake DID set!

The crust was a bit thick but not at all dry. The ricotta filling was very plain, but I prefer a less-sweet pie and the cherry preserve on the bottom added all the flavor needed, really. The amaretti kept pretty well, and tasted nice with the Coke Zero.
The artichoke is a bit of a showpiece, I don't think it's something I'd cook very often, though everything else was varying levels of "yeah I could eat this on the reg". The burik are really delicious and the stracotto is pretty low-maintenance. I liked this version of the cheesecake but I'm not sure if its simplicity would appeal to a lot of people. The amaretti are great, and both simple to make and gluten-free.
All the process photos and recipes are linked in the "festa alla cinque cibi" tag, but I'm definitely going to have to copy a few over into my regular cookbook.
I will admit that by the time I sat down with it all I was pretty tired, so I just kind of inhaled it all and left a wreckage behind. But the leftovers are cooling off before being put in the fridge, and frankly the dishes are 2024 Sam's problem.

reading nihei's notes on blame! and theres a line about the administration that really struck me. he says that in the lower strata (meaning, while killy in still in the lower strata aka at the beginning of the story) the administration is thought to be the same as the safeguards, until killy makes his mission to find the NTG known. nihei says "maybe they found hope in rebuilding the world in the quest of Kyrii and friends, and as such are trying to cooperate?"
and like. there's something so sweet about the only remaining sane system in this infinte, thousands years old sentient city where AI have developed mental illnesses unknown to man, giant robots have gone senile and nobody remebers anything anymore, looking down at a) a minuscule man who is probably as old as the city and has lost all recollection of who he is/used to be and b) an insane scientist who singlehandedly almost destructed a whole stratum by herself and went "thats the only two people who can succeed in this". like the administration spent thousands of years just letting the safeguards run free because they didn't have the means to stop them and because no one, for millennia!!, had proven to ever even stand a chance against the safeguards. until killy meets cibo. and then the administration leads them to toha heavy industries where they meet seu who has the NTG, and they it leads them to dhomo and iko.
like the administration had resigned themselves to just wait for the safeguards to exterminate the remnants of humanity until a little guy with a small gun and the smartest woman in the universe showed up and then there was hope again!

Ho sognato che andavo dal mio paninaro di fiducia (da cui in realtà non potrò andare mai più) che si era reinventato con un locale totalmente gluten-free. Gli chiedevo un panzerotto, poi mentre lo friggeva mi cacavo sotto al pensiero usasse quella friggitrice anche per i panzerotti normali, ma poi mi ricordavo che effettivamente era un locale solo per celiaci, quindi niente panzerotti normali
(che poi doveva prepararlo a posta a posta per me il panzerotto ma mi faceva aspettare un sacco di tempo, serviva altra gente prima, chiudeva quella sede e apriva un nuovo locale più grande e più bello, guardavamo la TV insieme perché questo nuovo locale era casa e bottega, poi alla fiiiiine si ricordava dalla mia richiesta, lol

The third and final of the dishes that I cooked today, a few of these (reheated) will be the first of tomorrow's Festa Alla Cinque Cibi, the appetizer course. I make no claims to authentic Roman Jewish cooking in any of this, but these are perhaps the most hilariously well-sourced and yet non-authentic of the bunch: Burik Con Patata, from a recipe in Portico.
Traditionally these are boiled potato mixed with other savory ingredients, wrapped in a crepe-like pancake and pan fried. The recipe itself says that you can speed up the process by using egg roll wrappers instead of homemade crepes, and I love an egg roll, so I said, "That, I will do that." Also IDK if you guys are aware but there is a not-insignificant relationship between American Jews and American Chinese food around this time of year. :D
Anyway I figured if I was going full egg roll I'd make life easy and use instant mashed potatoes. I'm not sure what it says about me that I feel compelled to add that I did at least use like...the fancy instant mashed potatoes. In any case, I mixed them with sauteed mushrooms and caramelized onions, and it made a spectacular filling for a really delicious dish. Like, this might enter some kind of regular rotation for meals in cucina di copperbadge. Although I'm still working out the best wrapping technique. I'll get there.
Tomorrow I'll be frying an artichoke and slow-cooking a beef stracotto as the "salad" and "main" of my five-course feast. For the rest of today I'm going to put my feet up and watch AS Roma try to topple Juventus, cuddle some cats, do my daily Italian learning in Duolingo, and probably have a few more of these burik for dinner because sono molto molto delizioso.

Joey hi!! i finished reading "cant it be you" and i absolutely love it! i watched the end of season two of yowamushi pedal and i needed that kinjou fanfic JAJAJAJJA (i sent you and ask before but when i did a "something went wrong" appeared so i dont know what happended) again with the fic, i love everything about it jajajaja the smut parts specially the first sex scene was 10/10. and i love the relationship of the main with everyone i really like how you wrote her and i love kinjou here best man jajajajaja
