NEUTRAL TERRITORY//
1 - Meeting Space / Flower Field // A spread of wildflowers, this is a regular meeting space between the Colonies. Trades often take place here, from tanned rabbit hides to cooked mice to leather bracelets.

CLOUDBURST TERRITORY//
2 - Cloudburst Camp // Set just a few feet away from the edge of the cliffs, Cloudburst Colony's camp offers little natural shelter. Instead, the cats have woven dens of brambles, flowers, and tall grasses to keep themselves warm, though their thick fur does a lot of the work.
3 - Heart Copse // The reason for the name of this little patch of trees has been long since lost to time. It's a nice place to find lark eggs, a nice treat among Cirrusi.
4 - Hare Meadows // A large meadow with tall grass. Hares make their homes here, and they make good meals should you catch them.

PIPESTONE TERRITORY//
5 - Pipestone Camp // Should one approach the place where Pipers make their camp, they'd not see much. Tall trees, sure, their boughs scraping the sky, but very few cats. The true camp is a labyrinth of tunnels, dug below the trees and reinforced with stone.
6 - Scorched Hollow // A bare hollow, the ground scorched and brown.  Nothing grows here, and it makes a good training spot.
7 - Firefly Oak // A giant oak covered in Spanish moss.  A well-loved place for fireflies, it's almost magical to see in warm summer evenings.

SHARED TERRITORY//
8 - Sheer Cliffs // Tall stone cliffs leading down to a small sandy beach. They're treacherous slopes, and can be deadly if you don't know exactly what you're doing.
9 - Ocean // Favoured by Cloudstone Colony and scorned by Pipestone Colony, the ocean is a tempermental mistress. Some days it's calm and blue, and others it's angry and grey.
10 - Sandy Beach // The sand here is so fine it's almost water, and so golden it's practically worth thousands.

OUTSIDE TERRITORY//
11 - Frozen Wastelands / Mountains // Mountains encircling the Colony territories. They're tall and cold, imposing a border on the world.

this poem by Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven (who was indeed a baroness, unlike Lautreamont who i was shocked to find out was not really a count!) makes me think of Bloodborne... Lake, palegreen / paleblood. even her grammar naturally reads like Souls messages. "finger!, but hole!" (which could as easily be a line from one of her poems, anyway). she devises a lot of compound words in her poems—"sunstar", "sunsirens", "crimsoncruising", "saucerorbs", "rubyblood"—which, now it occurs to me to see, is also something we find in Souls games. "paleblood", "palestone", "darknight", "cloudstone", "moonlightstone" and "moonshadestone" (very near "moonstone"). why write this way? one is reminded of the complex compound forms we find in Germanic poetry, where instead of writing "blood" they write "wound-sea" and so forth. valkyrie (i prefer the Old English wælcyrge—don't you?) is already one of these, by the way—slain-chooser. the psychopomp. but the effect here is not, as it is with the kennings, a riddle which, when solved, returns a familiar image—the 'sea-steeds with foam necks' are, once comprehended, mere ships—they are rather familiar points of reference which combine into something strange. ah, yes, paleblood...

the more i think about this, the more i like it. in an artifact deck, this can power out a big pile of 2/2s and with something like cloudstone curio or evacuation you can start turning those 2/2s into more cards. more cards means more artifacts means more 2/2s. also, if you get lucky and hit a big payoff card, you can swing in for a free flip.

BFZ #0015: Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger
At first glance, this version of Ulamog looks like a great option for Etali. It's two unrestricted, exile-level removal spells stapled to a massive indestructible body. And it is good! It's a good thing to hit off of Etali. But what also needs to be considered is what it does when we're *not* hitting it off of Etali. At 10 mana, this card is almost never a good option for hardcasting. You'll either have too much mana for it, or you'll have the resources to start an Etali chain, so it's pretty dead in hand. And compared to the shuffle titans, this does nothing in the deck itself like preventing you from being milled out. Ultimately, for my version of Etali I view cards like this as traps. There are enough payoffs that are ALSO enablers for Etali (like Big Score) that simply being big and splashy isn't quite enough IMO. As a final note, Ulamog's attack trigger actually removes cards from our opponents' decks that we could otherwise cheat out with Etali.
Synergy: 2/5. A nice thing to hit off the top, but doesn't ramp us or help us copy Etali triggers.
Versatility: 2/5. It just does removal and is big.
Explosive Potential: 1/5. Ulamog requires being cast to do stuff the turn it comes down, which means no Sneak Attack/Cloudstone freebie triggers for us. It also doesn't make mana or draw cards.
Efficiency: 4/5. It's a lot of mana, but for 10 mana you're getting your money's worth in fair Magic. Unfortunately, this deck's goal is to play unfair Magic.
Final Score: 9/20. Not quite enough to make my list.

Gold.
Its the first thing she notices. Streaks of it, in large bold passes. Glittering under the evening lamplight, glinting a thousand shades in arcane glow. Gold, in big broad letters, splashed across the cobblestone and shuttered windows. There's magic to it, she knows. Because paint does not glow with such vibrance, such limitless potential. The gold is daylight between the shadows, dripping where it is still fresh into small puddles. She normally would not have stopped, Laerryn reminds herself. But theres something undeniable about the talent in the piece. She's pulling apart the intricacies of weaving transmutation into a spray can when her watch goes off. Meeting with the civil architects, she still has to make it to Cloudstone and she's already late - the only reason she decided to cross Excelsior Plaza in the first place. She throws one last glance at the tag, bold and avaricious against the closed doors of Avalir Daily. A thought strikes like chimes in the back of her mind; memories of an Op-Ed in the University journal about some deep running corruption in the newspaper. The writer was some backwater kid who'd been kicked from three bard colleges already before stowing away on Avalir. The thought wisps away just as quickly as her watch chimes again. The gold shimmers, and as she pushes her feet to move, she notices that the strokes make out a word. She leaves the gold puddles in her wake and rolls it in her mouth. It fits strangely between her molars. The kind of word you could bite down one, and it wouldn't give an inch. Not, now a word, but a name.

From the Vault #4: Vadrik | Equip to Cast
Building Izzet decks is hard.
You either end up with an underpowered deck that throws around Lightning Bolts and Brainstorms (but can't ultimately close), or you storm off/combo win. There's really no in-between.
And the sad part is, there are really cool Izzet commanders.
This deck started off by trying to build a fair Mizzix spellslinger deck. That was impossible. Mizzix is so busted that no mater what you do, you're going to dominate the game.
Where Mizzix incents you to storm off, from the surface, Vadrik encourages you to play big spells. And getting there, gives you a ton of fun options.
A lot of people want to double-down on Vadrik by pumping him with instants and sorceries. It's a perfectly fine approach to beef him up with Haze of Rage, Seething Anger, or Lunar Frenzy. That's fine for a turn, but it encourages you to win on the spot - and you are screwed if your Vadrik gets removed mid-stream.
I wanted something that encouraged a more interactive game - and had more staying power. That's why I went with equipment. Suiting up Vadrik means you can reliably cast bombs turn after turn.
I started with cards like Time Stretch and Mizzix's Mastery, but ultimately those got cut. They made the game a race to see how quickly you could go (effectively) infinite.
In their place, I'm anchoring on Surge to Victory. Surge is still an expensive bomb, but it encourages building up a board presence - and it let's you reuse all the other ridiculous spells in the deck.
Key cards
Hero's Blade | Blackblade Reforged | Grafted Wargear | Heirloom Blade: Here's the equipment package. Wargear and Hero's Blade are effectively free equips. Blackblade let's you ignore casting cost for the rest of the game. Heirloom Blade gives you some wizard tribal advantage.
Trophy Mage: Goes and gets Wargear and Heirloom Blade, as well as Cloudstone Curio and the Celestus.
Cloudstone Curio: We've got a decent wizard tribal theme going on here - and most of them have useful EtBs. Very little is better than Casting Master of Waves and bouncing a Snapcaster Mage.
Harmonic Prodigy: Is bonkers in this deck. He procs whenever Vadrik triggers and he doubles up all the EtBs.
Whispers of the Muse: When combined with Storm-Kiln Artist, Whispers of the Muse goes effectively infinite (Vadrik can discount buyback).
Triskaidekaphile: An alt win con and draw engine all in one. Sometimes you can't rely on Vadrik to get you there - or maybe your wizard army was annihilated. You can still Blue Sun's Zenith eot and pull out the win.
