Colombia is to cull some of the 166 hippos descended from a herd owned by drug lord Pablo Escobar in the 1980s.
Environment Minister Susana Muhamad said that 20 would be sterilised, others would be transferred abroad - and "some" would be euthanised.
Experts have for years tried to control the hippo numbers.
Escobar imported the animals for his private zoo at Hacienda Nápoles. They were left to roam after he was killed in a shootout with police in 1993.
Authorities have tried various approaches to curb the population explosion in Colombia's main river, the Magdalena, including sterilisation and transferring individuals to zoos abroad.
Efforts failed to contain the herd's growth, however, with a lack of predators and the fertile and swampy Antioquia region providing perfect conditions for the native African animal to thrive.
Their fate was sealed when hippos were declared an invasive species last year, opening the door to a cull.
"We are working on the protocol for the export of the animals," Ms Muhamad was quoted as saying by local media.
"We are not going to export a single animal if there is no authorisation from the environmental authority of the other country."
She said the ministry was creating a protocol for euthanasia as a last resort.
Colombian experts have long warned that the hippos' uncontrolled reproduction poses a threat to humans and native wildlife.
Estimates suggest that the population could reach 1,000 by 2035 if nothing is done, but animal activists say sterilization entails suffering for the animals - and great danger for the vets doing it.
The hippo is one of the largest land animals, with adult males weighing up to three tonnes. They are also among the most dangerous, killing around 500 people a year.
Fishing communities along the Magdalena River have come under attack and some hippos invaded a school yard, although no one has been killed.
Escobar was the head of the Medellín cartel and dubbed the "cocaine king" who amassed an estimated $30bn (£25bn) fortune smuggling drugs into Miami and the southern United States.
His reign of terror spanned more than a decade and involved kidnappings, hundreds of murders, bribery, bombings and turf wars with rival drug barons - as well as a brief sojourn as an elected politician.
As one of the most-wanted men on the planet, he gave himself up to Colombian authorities in 1991 on agreement that he would spend five years in a prison he had built, known as La Catedral.
Escobar went on the run a year later amid government attempts to move him to a more secure jail.
With a $2m US bounty on his head, he met his end in his home town of Rionegro - he was shot dead on a rooftop on 2 December 1993 as he tried to evade police.
He left a legacy of violence but also the 5,500-acre Hacienda Nápoles, private citadel in Antioquia containing, among other things, a menagerie of four hippos, plus giraffes, camels and zebras.
The hacienda was given over to poor locals by the government after Escobar's death, and the hippos were left to roam free as they were deemed too difficult to seize.

minor circuit + lil mac headcanons because i have brainrot
i can’t stop thinking about these silly little men they’ve taken over my life
-our token fr*nchman glass joe is actually pretty nice considering he’s a parisian! it often surprises wvba watchers that he’s not super mean and rude
-glass joe and bear hugger are also pretty good friends because of the lack of a language barrier! i like to imagine that there’s sometimes miscommunications between them since canadian french and regular french are just slightly different but otherwise they’re best buds! (coming from someone who speaks in very formal canadian french 😪 not quebec french tho i got no clue what’s going on there. i speak the other kind)
-von kaiser isn’t actually one for beer (or any kind of alcohol) despite being a walking german stereotype. he claims he doesn’t like the taste (which is only half true) but it’s actually because he wants to set a good example for the kids he teaches LOL
-he’s also pretty good friends with glass joe, and the two can be seen lingering around each other after matches. it’s an unspoken rule between the two that if they’re around each other, they look out for one another
-disco kid is friends with everyone in every circuit! he’s friendly in and outside of the ring, and he’s very encouraging to newer boxers that want a fight
-disco is also the only minor circuit fighter who has successfully knocked down mr. sandman in a fight. he’s quick on his feet and was able to to get him down once in the beginning of the fight (albeit sandman was only down for about 3 secs before getting back up). he did lose in the end but the minor, major, and world circuit acknowledge that it was quite a feat
-also despite his name being ‘disco’ kid, he’s very open to any and all music genres. piston hondo got him onto j-pop, while macho man keeps him up to date on more mainstream pop music (since disco himself likes pop but doesn’t go looking for it himself, yknow?)
-king hippo may struggle with spoken english, but he’s good at sign language and keeps some pen and paper on him for when someone doesn’t know asl (his handwriting is better than most peoples actually)
-he’s always been a loud guy, but he’s louder as an adult than he was as a kid. the combination of being loud + the language of hippo island consisting of loud yells and grunts makes him intimidating to newer boxers and wvba fans alike, but he’s super kind outside of the ring
-little mac has a super fast metabolism and doc always has snacks on hand for him
-i don’t know if little mac has a canon nationality besides american, but i like to headcanon he’s got colombian roots (there’s some headcanons abt him being from east asia and some saying he’s native american, but i can’t see them sorry😭)
-little mac is also a big fan of video games, but he doesn’t have as much time to play them as wvba champ. in the off chance he has free time or a day off, he dedicates some time to lay down and go crazy in mario kart
-i’m a big fan of the autistic mac headcanon, and i’m a big fan of when ppl portray him is non-verbal/selectively mute (+ it also makes sense that his special interest would be boxing)
as a side note: i like to think that all the boxers have at least some understanding of asl since both mac and king hippo don’t speak much

Nation mourns Rosalynn Carter, who helped redefine role of first lady (Washington Post) Condolences poured in from across the nation for former first lady Rosalynn Carter, who died Sunday, with elected officials, other prominent figures and nonprofits praising her work to redefine the role of the first lady, her dedication to humanitarian causes and her service to the country. The Carter Center in Atlanta announced that she died at her home in Plains, Ga. She was 96. Carter eschewed a ceremonial role as first lady, and instead served as a close political and policy adviser to her husband, former president Jimmy Carter. During her tenure, she created the modern Office of the First Lady. She used the modernized first lady role to advocate for better treatment of the mentally ill, and was instrumental in securing congressional approval and funding for the Mental Health Systems Act in September 1980, the first major reform of federal mental health programs in nearly two decades. After the White House, the Carters went on to found the Carter Center, an Atlanta-based nonprofit organization committed to human rights. Rosalynn Carter and her husband, who were together 77 years, are often remembered most for their work after they departed the White House in 1981. Habitat for Humanity honored the former first lady in a social media post—the Carters spent a week each year building homes for low-income people with the group. The couple built or remodeled more than 4,300 homes in 14 countries.
Dissent over US policy in the Israel-Hamas war stirs unusual public protests from federal employees (AP) Federal government workers from the State Department to NASA are circulating open letters demanding that President Joe Biden pursue a cease-fire in Israel’s war against Hamas. Congressional staffers are picking up microphones in front of the Capitol, speaking out to condemn what they say is the silence of lawmakers about the toll on Palestinian civilians. As the deaths soar in Gaza, Biden and Congress are facing unusually public challenges from the inside over their support for Israel’s offensive. Hundreds of staffers in the administration and on Capitol Hill are signing on to open letters, speaking to reporters and holding vigils, all in an effort to shift U.S. policy toward more urgent action to stem Palestinian casualties. “Most of our bosses on Capitol Hill are not listening to the people they represent,” one of the congressional staffers told the crowd at a protest this month. Wearing medical masks that obscured their faces, the roughly 100 congressional aides heaped flowers in front of Congress to honor the civilians killed in the conflict.
Deadly downpours (BBC) The Dominican Republic is grappling with the aftermath of a torrential storm that flooded buildings, induced power cuts, and knocked down a highway tunnel wall over the weekend. At least 21 people were killed, officials said, while as many as 13,000 people were displaced by heavy downpours that Dominican President Luis Abinader described as the country’s “largest rainfall event ever.”
Colombia to Sterilize Pablo Escobar’s ‘Cocaine Hippos’ (NYT) When the Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar was killed in 1993, most of the animals he had imported as pets—zebras, giraffes, kangaroos and rhinoceroses—died or were transferred to zoos. But not his four hippopotamuses. They thrived. Perhaps a little too well. Officials estimate that about 170 hippos, descended from Mr. Escobar’s original herd, now roam Colombia, and the population could grow to 1,000 by 2035, posing a serious threat to the country’s ecosystem. This month, after years of debate about what to do with the voracious herbivores, Colombian officials announced a plan to sterilize some, possibly euthanize others and relocate some to sanctuaries in other countries. On Friday, one official said that four hippos—two adult females and two juvenile males—had already been surgically sterilized. Colombian officials describe the hippos as an aggressive and invasive species with no natural predators.
Milei to take Argentina down uncharted path (Washington Post/Foreign Policy) Javier Milei, a radical libertarian and admirer of Donald Trump rode a wave of voter rage to win Argentina’s presidency on Sunday, crushing the political establishment. Voters in this nation of 46 million demanded a drastic change from a government that has sent the peso tumbling, inflation skyrocketing and more than 40 percent of the population into poverty. With Milei, Argentina takes a leap into the unknown. Wielding chain saws on the campaign trail, the wild-haired Milei vowed to slash public spending in a country heavily dependent on government subsidies. He pledged to dollarize the economy, shut down the central bank and cut the number of government ministries from 18 to eight. His rallying campaign cry was a takedown of the country’s political “caste.” Many Argentines chose to overlook the Milei messages that made them uncomfortable. For some, a vote for the outsider was a reluctant yet strategic one. “The thinking is well, maybe since Milei is crazy, he’ll launch himself like a kamikaze” and make necessary reforms that previous leaders refused to make, in fear of getting kicked out of power, one analyst said. “Let’s use the crazy man to make the reforms that the rational ones didn’t want to make.” Another said, “There’s an environment of rage and frustration over the economic and social results that the country has had for many years. That’s led to this thinking that we need something new. Even if it ends in disaster, at least it will be a new disaster.”
The Invisible War in Ukraine Being Fought Over Radio Waves (NYT) The drones began crashing on Ukraine’s front lines, with little explanation. For months, the aerial vehicles supplied by Quantum Systems, a German technology firm, had worked smoothly for Ukraine’s military, swooping through the air to spot enemy tanks and troops in the country’s war against Russia. Then late last year, the machines abruptly started falling from the sky as they returned from missions. Quantum’s engineers soon homed in on the issue: Russians were jamming the wireless signals that connected the drones to the satellites they relied on for navigation, leading the machines to lose their way and plummet to earth. To adjust, Quantum developed artificial intelligence-powered software to act as a kind of secondary pilot and added a manual option so the drones could be landed with an Xbox controller. A battle is raging in Ukraine in the invisible realm of electromagnetic waves, with radio signals being used to overwhelm communication links to drones and troops, locate targets and trick guided weapons. Known as electronic warfare, the tactics have turned into a cat-and-mouse game between Russia and Ukraine, quietly driving momentum swings in the 21-month old conflict and forcing engineers to adapt. “Electronic warfare has impacted the fighting in Ukraine as much as weather and terrain,” said Bryan Clark, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, a think tank in Washington, adding that every operation in the conflict now has to take into account enemy moves in the electromagnetic spectrum.
China’s Problem With Unfinished Homes Keeps Getting Bigger (WSJ) China’s housing market has a big problem: millions of unfinished homes that were sold but not delivered. Solving that is crucial for a recovery, but the problem keeps getting bigger. More property developers are defaulting on their debt and adding to the logjam of construction delays and stalled residential developments across the country. Potential home buyers have lost confidence in the housing market because they fear developers won’t be able to complete their projects. That sentiment has created a vicious circle as falling new home sales imperil even more companies.
Creeping escalation along Israel-Lebanon border (Washington Post) The secondary conflict that erupted along the Lebanon-Israel border in tandem with the Gaza war has settled into something of a routine. Every day for the past six weeks, Israel has attacked Lebanon and Hezbollah has attacked Israel, a pattern that began as a tit for tat and has now blurred into a steady exchange of fire. Almost always, the strikes are within 4 to 5 miles of the border on either side, a deliberate calibration designed to contain the violence and avert a far more devastating war. But the range and intensity of the fighting is gradually increasing. Saturday saw Israeli jets strike an aluminum factory in the Lebanese town of Nabatieh, 12 miles north of the border—well beyond the traditional zone in which retaliatory fire has been considered acceptable by both sides. And both sides have started using deadlier weapons. Israel is now regularly sending fighter jets to strike Hezbollah targets; Hezbollah is deploying drones and heavier caliber missiles. It claimed on Saturday to have shot down an Israeli drone, which Israel denied. Israel responded later in the day by targeting what it described as an advanced surface-to-air missile system.
Is Israel’s Military Strategy to Eradicate Hamas Working? (NYT) The Israeli military’s seizure of Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest medical complex, is central to the military strategy at the heart of the ground invasion: Eradicate Hamas and free roughly 240 hostages taken during the Oct. 7 surprise attack. That strategy has unfolded over the past three weeks as more than 40,000 Israeli soldiers encircled Gaza City, where Israeli officials say Hamas commanders were concentrated. The soldiers then attacked fighters and bunkers, all while targeting a vast tunnel network that Israeli officials say enables Hamas forces to hide and carry out operations. Israeli officials also assessed that striking so deeply in the heart of Gaza City would pressure Hamas to reach a deal on hostage releases. Israel has long accused Hamas of using civilians as human shields in the densely populated Gaza Strip, and says the terrorist group positioned underground military facilities near homes, schools, mosques and hospitals throughout Gaza. Al-Shifa became Exhibit A in this narrative, as the Israeli military claimed Hamas used a vast maze of tunnels underneath the hospital as a base. So far it is not clear that the Israeli strategy is working. How will Hamas be eliminated if its fighters blend into the rest of the population as they head south? How long can Israel, which lost about 1,200 people in the Oct. 7 atrocities, sustain growing international pressure for a cease-fire as civilian casualties in Gaza mount?
Gaza war update (BBC) A group of 28 premature babies, evacuated from a besieged hospital in Gaza on Sunday, have crossed into Egypt. It's thought they are travelling to an Egyptian airport, before being assessed and moved onto hospitals. The babies were patients at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, now occupied by Israeli forces after heavy fighting. Earlier, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said an Israeli air strike on a different hospital killed at least 12 people. Israel has not commented, but says it's attacking "terrorists" and "terrorist infrastructure" in the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, Qatar—which is trying to broker a deal—says only "very minor" obstacles remain to some Israeli hostages being released. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says 13,000 people have been killed in the territory since Israel began its campaign against Hamas.

The hippos have no natural predators in Colombia and are flourishing in the warm, wetland environments. The growth of the hippo population has sparked concerns regarding their impact on the local ecosystem, as well as the significant risks they pose to humans in the area.
Hippos are among the largest land animals in the world and are responsible for hundreds of human deaths in Africa every year, although so far the Colombian population has not killed anyone, despite occasional attacks.
On Thursday, the Colombian environment minister, Susana Muhamad, announced plans to control the hippo population though measures including surgical sterilization, the transfer of animals to other countries, and possibly euthanasia.

This is not a question but I wanted to say it
At one of Pablo Escobar's properties they found some hippos, they were so heavy and difficult to transport that they decided to leave them there to eventually die... but that didn't happen
The hippos managed to reach the Magdalena River, where they have been living since then, now the population of hippos in Colombia is estimated to be between 130 to 160
But why are there so many hippos?
Studies have shown that hippos reproduce faster in Colombia than in several African countries, because in the Colombian territories where the hippos have settled, they have more food and there are not as many droughts as in the African countries where they live.
That's all c:
Hello! Thank you for the Hippo knowledge! It makes me happy knowing that the hippos lived and started thriving instead. Hopefully their numbers continue to grow 💞🦛
