Place as watchtowers to track and police the movement of enslaved people

Place as slave quarters for forced laborers that are not seen as worthy of decent living conditions
Place as an agent of bondage
Place as home to three-fifths of a human
Place as the severing of kinship ties
Everywhere we look, urbanist practices and our built environment itself continue to be place-based manifestations of racist ideology and the institutions of slavery.

“While many call for the arrest of the officers that murdered Breonna Taylor, I am calling for the arrest of every system, structure, and policy that engendered her death—starting with urbanism.
Here are just some of the ways that the fields of urban planning, transportation planning, architecture, and civil engineering can meet this moment and answer the call for collective design-centric reparations in the built environment. 
Cargo/Freight Prohibition and Revenue Tax. Prohibition of transit storage/maintenance facilities and cargo/freight movement through communities with high concentrations of Black residents, coupled with the redistribution of a percentage of all revenues deriving from freight/rail, rideshare and gas stations to Black American descendants of slavery
Wayfinding Recall and Mobility Fine Reversal. Removal of hostile wayfinding, directional signage and pavement markings that impose Eurocentric superiority through forced movement patterns and travel behaviors in the built environment; coupled with the cancellation of all mobility and transportation-related fees/fines imposed on Black people
Deep Planning and No/Low-Cost Freedom of Movement. Comprehensive, long-range network and public works planning that honors freedom of movement and mode choice through design elements, coupled with free and subsidized transportation, regardless of mode
Divest from Policing and Invest in Service Provisions. Divest from enforcement and policing as a programmatic component of urban planning, coupled with direct investments in Black service providers that meet the behavioral health and resource navigation needs of Black communities
Public Works Prioritization and Universal Basic Income. Moratorium on quick-build transportation and land-use elements in communities that need roadway reconstruction, signal enhancements, accessible pedestrian infrastructure, drainage and floodplain planning/development, and the removal of toxic industry and public works infrastructure. Because extensive reconstruction and repairs are so disruptive and have such long construction timelines, this intervention must be coupled with a universal basic income in neighborhoods undergoing extensive repair and upgrades to prevent displacement of existing residents
Community Planning and Workforce Reclassification. Implementation of a community planning model that reclassifies civil service planning roles by removing academic and background requirements that privilege technical training over lived experience; coupled with a direct low-barrier pathway to civil service for planners/engineers from or living directly in the proposed project areas
Transit Enhancements and Neighborhood Network Connectivity. Enhanced transit amenities, heated/cooling shelter at stops, benches, and boarding docks in communities with high concentrations of Black residents, coupled with prioritizing comprehensive investments in neighborhood transit networks over commuter and Bus Rapid Transit routes that move non-Black commuters through Black communities at the expense of community connectivity and neighborhood network planning

oakland community land trust 
Land Trusts, Cooperatives, and Civil Fee Waivers. Fund and subsidize land trusts and cooperatives granting Black communities autonomy in project development; coupled with no-cost access to permits and technical services throughout every phase of project development (including maintenance) in perpetuity
Land Use Reparations Boards and Redevelopment Revenue Distribution. Implementation of local and state-level land-use reparations boards to oversee funding proposals, exclusionary zoning, renewal, and revitalization practices and to establish guidelines for restorative land use measures for all zoning, capital and redevelopment projects; coupled with the allocation of a percentage of all redevelopment revenues to Black residents in the project area
Restorative Zoning and Right-of-Return. Ban speculation and rapid re-development in Black communities. Rezone all predominantly white and high income neighborhoods to allow multi-family unit development, coupled with right-of-return programs, lien dismissals, and payouts as a direct act of atonement for the legacy and impacts of unjust sharecropper arrangements, restrictive covenants, redlining, predatory lending, and rapid redevelopment
Impose Moratorium on Prison Development and Enact Fair Chance Housing. Impose a moratorium on the construction of new prisons and divert funds to housing stabilization, public health, education, and direct services for Black people, coupled with policies that prohibit the consideration of criminal records during housing eligibility determination processes
Homeowner Subsidies and Real Estate Revenue Redistribution. Subsidize downpayment and revitalization costs for Black homeowners/buyers; coupled with easement/eminent domain protections and redirecting a percentage of revenues from real estate transactions to Black communities
Surveillance Prohibition and Tech Tax. Prohibition on the use of technology affixed to infrastructure for the purposes of tracking, surveillance, and enforcement in Black communities; coupled with a redistribution of tech and data industry, rideshare, and micro-mobility revenues to Black-owned businesses and service providers
Anti-Displacement and Racial Composition as Factors in Environmental Protections. Incorporate anti-displacement and prevention of cultural erasure as environmental protections within regulatory environmental review processes (like the National Environmental Policy Act); coupled with the removal of categorical exemptions from environmental review processes where the project footprint is in an area with high concentrations of Black residents. Limit the number of times (and the duration of time) an environmental review process can be used to authorize development in a project area
I suggest the above structural solutions for one reason: because I am not willing to wait for a personal transformation to happen in the hearts and minds of every American, and I can’t commit my life to convincing people that I am worthy of decency and retribution.

The German-American developed a bold, bombastic form, designing company headquarters, banks, airports and government buildings across the world that caught the power-dressing pomp of the 1980s. The Trump administration has determined that top Chinese firms, including telecoms equipment giant Huawei Technologies and video surveillance company Hikvision, are owned or controlled by the Chinese military, laying the groundwork for new US financial sanctions, according to a document seen by Reuters on Wednesday.
A US defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the authenticity of the document and said it had been sent to Congress. Washington placed Huawei on a trade blacklist last year over national security concerns and has led an international campaign to convince allies to exclude it from their 5G networks.
The list of 20 companies that Washington alleges are backed by the Chinese military and operate in the United States was first reported by Reuters. It also includes China Mobile Communications Group and China Telecommunications Corp as well as aircraft manufacturer Aviation Industry Corp of China.
The designations were drawn up by the Defense Department, which was mandated by a 1999 law to compile a list of Chinese military companies operating in the United States, including those "owned or controlled" by the People's Liberation Army that provide commercial services, manufacture, produce or export.
The Pentagon's designations do not trigger penalties, but the law says the president may impose sanctions that could include blocking all property of the listed parties.

The Pentagon has come under pressure from lawmakers of both US political parties to publish the list, amid rising tensions between Washington and Beijing over technology, trade and foreign policy.
Last September, top US Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer, Republican Senator Tom Cotton and Republican Representative Mike Gallagher penned a letter to Defense Secretary Mark Esper raising concerns about Beijing's enlisting of Chinese corporations to harness emerging civilian technologies for military purposes.
"Will you commit to updating and publicly releasing this list as soon as possible?" they asked in the letter.
On Wednesday, Cotton and Gallagher praised DOD for releasing the list and urging the president to impose economic penalties against the firms.
ALSO READ: US to allow companies to work with Huawei on non-sensitive 5G tech The White House did not comment on whether it would sanction the companies on the list, but said it saw it as "a useful tool for the U.S. Government, companies, investors, academic institutions, and likeminded partners to conduct due diligence with regard to partnerships with these entities, particularly as the list grows."
The list will likely add to tensions between the world's two largest economies, which have been at loggerheads over the handling of the coronavirus pandemic and China's move to impose security legislation on Hong Kong, among multiple points of friction that have worsened this year.
Last week, China threatened retaliation after President Donald Trump signed legislation calling for sanctions over the repression of China's Uighurs.
The list "is a start, but woefully inadequate to warn the American people about the state-owned and -directed companies that support the Chinese government and Communist Party's activities threatening U.S. economic and national security," Republican Senator Marco Rubio, who sponsored the Uighur bill, said in a statement.
SPOTLIGHT ON US TIES
The list will also turn a spotlight on U.S. companies' ties to the Chinese firms as well as their operations in the United States.
In 2012, U.S.-based General Electric Co set up a 50/50 avionics joint venture with AVIC, known as Aviage Systems, to supply equipment for China's C919 passenger jet.
The Defense Department list also includes China Railway Construction Corp, China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp (CASIC), as well as CRRC, the world's largest maker of passenger trains, which has clinched contracts in Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and Los Angeles by underbidding rivals.
The companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Many of the companies listed are already in the crosshairs of U.S. regulators. Both Huawei and Hikvision were added to a Commerce Department blacklist last year, which forces their U.S. suppliers to seek licenses before selling to them.
In April, the U.S. Justice Department and other federal agencies called on the Federal Communications Commission to revoke China Telecom (Americas) Corp's authorization to provide international telecommunications services to and from the United States. The telecoms regulator rejected a similar request by China Mobile last year that had been pending for years.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Los Angeles is pleased to announce an exhibition titled HIGH BEAMS featuring work by Chris Burnside, Christopher Dunlap, Kate Harding, Sarah Heinemann, Gyun Hur, Gabriel Hurier, Andy Kolar, Ryan Scails, and Karen Tepaz curated by Lacey Fekishazy, the founder/director of SARDINE in Brooklyn, New York. There will be a reception for the artists Saturday, January 4, 2020 from 7-10 pm and the show will be on view through Sunday, January 26, 2020.
The title HIGH BEAMS is a literal reference to the setting of an automobile's headlights, which brighten a longer distance in front of the car. This setting is particularly useful on dark roads to avoid accidents and improving vision and therefore driver response. While these beams clarify the more distant road on clear nights at higher speeds, they can also blind other drivers or reduce the vision and speed of the driver in fog, rain, or snow. Curator Lacey Fekishazy chose the artists in this group exhibition for their intuitive insight, long haul dedication to process, and their ability to brighten of the future in a darkening world. While the work is an illumination, it can also accent the invisible just before us.
HIGH BEAMS is part of #ArtistRun2020, a year-long exploration of artist-run spaces from all around the country organized by Tiger Strikes Asteroid and Trestle Gallery. SARDINE is one of 11 artist-run projects asked to curate an exhibition at our various locations with the intention of building relationships and expanding our collective networks. Founded in 2011 by Lacey Fekishazy, SARDINE is a contemporary art gallery in Brooklyn, New York presenting solo exhibitions, small group shows and occasional limited editions by featured artists. SARDINE's modest size is a key asset in the construction of a contemplative, intimate space which has been used to showcase carefully curated collections of work as well as immersive, site-specific installations. What started as a small enterprise has grown into more than 8 years of operation and approximately 69 events and exhibitions. SARDINE has been featured in ArtNews, Artsy, Maake Magazine, The New York Times, Time Out New York, The New Yorker and Hyperallergic. 
Chris Burnside was born in Seattle, Washington. He received his BFA from the University of Washington and his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. He has had solo exhibitions at the Gross McCleaf Gallery (Philadelphia, PA) Washington Art Association (Washington, CT) Nexus Foundation (Philadelphia, PA) and the Alpan Gallery (Huntington, NY). His work has been exhibited in various group shows including the National Academy Museum (New York, NY), SOIL Gallery (Seattle, WA), Kresge Gallery at Ramapo College (Mahwah, NJ), and Outside the Time Zone at Camel Art Space (Brooklyn, NY). Burnside lives and works in Seattle.
Christopher Dunlap was born in Pullman, Washington. He received his BFA from University of Washington and his MFA from Massachusetts College of Art. He has had recent solo shows at Hiromart Gallery in Tokyo, Japan in 2019 and at SARDINE in 2017 and 2019. His work has also been exhibited in various group shows including Albada Jelgersma Gallery (Amsterdam, NL), Transmitter Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), No Place Gallery (Columbus, OH), Site 131 (Dallas, TX), Mckenzie Fine Art (New York, NY) and Spring Break Art Fair (New York, NY). He has been reviewed in The New York Times, ArtFCity and Travel Magazine. Dunlap lives and works in Harlem, New York City.
Kate Harding is an artist living and working between Los Angeles, New York City and Missouri.  Harding received an MFA in Art Practice from School of Visual Arts (New York, NY) in 2014, a BFA in Fine Arts from Otis College (Los Angeles, CA) in 2003, and an AAS from Fashion Institute of Technology (New York, NY) in 2001. Solo and two-person exhibitions have included: 3A Gallery, The Chelsea Hotel (New York, NY); SARDINE, Grace Space (Brooklyn, NY); Track 16 (Los Angeles, CA); East Central College (Union, MO). Selected group exhibitions, performances and screenings have included Art in Odd Places, La MaMa, International Print Center New York, Electronic Arts Intermix, MoMA, Vanity Projects, CP Projects (New York, NY); SARDINE, SoHo20, Invisible Dog (Brooklyn, NY); Rosamund Felson, Edward Cella Art + Architecture, Circus Gallery, SeeLine Gallery, Echo Park Film Center, Statler Waldorf Gallery (Los Angeles, CA). Her work has been written about in The Brooklyn Rail, ArtFile, The Huffington Post, American Artist: Drawing Magazine, Fiberarts Magazine, Notes on Looking: Contemporary Art From Los Angeles, ArtScene, and The Missourian among others. Sarah Heinemann is a painter based in Brooklyn. Originally from Chicago, IL, Heinemann attended Smith College in Northampton, MA., and holds a BFA in painting from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is currently a graduate candidate at CUNY Hunter, class of 2022. Recently included in the show ‘Another Matter’ at Lazy Susan Gallery curated by Gisela Guieros, she has shown with the Knockdown Center, SARDINE, ATM Gallery in New York as well as Mass MoCA’s 28 Holden Gallery in North Adams, MA. Heinemann is slated to have a solo show at SARDINE in 2020. She has worked for the studio of Sol LeWitt since 2000 realizing LeWitt wall drawings for museums, galleries, and private collections.
Gyun Hur was born in South Korea, she moved to Georgia at the age of 13. Hur is a New York based, interdisciplinary artist and an educator whose experience as an immigrant daughter deeply fuels her practice. She was recently an artist-in-residence at NARS Foundation (Brooklyn, NY) and an AIM 38 fellow with the Bronx Museumand is currently a professor at the Parsons School of Design (New York, NY). She has performed and exhibited in Canada, China, Hong Kong, Italy, Turkey, and the United States. Gyun completed Pratt Fine Arts Residency, BRICworkspace, Danspace Project Platform Writer-in-Residency,  Ox-Bow Artist-in-Residency, Vermont Studio Center, and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She is the recipient of The Hudgens Prize, Artadia Award, and Joan Mitchell Foundation Scholarship. Her works have been featured in Art In America, Art Paper, Sculpture, Art Asia Pacific, Public Art Magazine Korea, Hong Kong Economic Journal, Yahoo! Tech, Huffington Post, Brooklyn Street Art, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Pelican Bomb, Creative Loafing, Jezebel, and The Atlantan. She was listed as the Best Emerging Artist by Creative Loafing and selected in Oxford American’s “100 Under 100: Superstars of Southern Art” issue. Her interest in art making in public space led her to various artist presentations at the TEDxCentennialWomen, the international street art conference Living Walls: The City Speaks, the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and many others. She recently contributed as an artist writer to fLoromancy September Issue 36, The Brooklyn Rail and The Forgetory.  
Gabriel Hurier was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and lives and works in Newburgh, New York. He studied painting and printmaking at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Hurier has participated in numerous group shows in the greater New York area including Gallery 128 (New York, NY), ATM Gallery (New York, NY), Matteawan Gallery (Beacon, NY), Space Create (Newburgh, NY) and more in Chicago, Cincinnati, North Adams, San Diego, Singapore, and Zagreb. Hurier has had solo shows at SARDINE in 2012 and 2014. He is currently exploring shapes in maps and color relationships in landscapes observed as a traveler and a father. His work often utilizes everyday materials leftover from construction and 15 years of realizing wall drawings for Sol LeWitt. 
Andy Kolar was born in Spirit Lake, IA. He is a LA based artist represented by Walter Maciel Gallery with whom he has had two solo shows (2017 & 2015). Kolar received his MFA in Drawing and Painting at California State University, Long Beach in 2007 and earned a BFA in Painting & Printmaking at Minnesota State University, Makato, MN. Kolar has been included in numerous exhibitions in Southern California including the recent shows ‘Edge to Air’ at Denk Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), ‘Painting Architecture’ at UCR Arts Block (Riverside, CA), ‘6018 Wilshire’ at Edward Cella Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), ‘Wall Painting 2013’ and ‘FORMS OF ABSTRACTION’ at the Irvine Fine Arts Center (Irvine, CA) and ‘De Stil' at Andrew Shire Gallery (Los Angeles, CA). In 2010, Kolar was one of 45 artists included in the California Biennial curated by Sarah Bancroft at the Orange County Museum of Art.  He was previously represented and included in solo and group shows at Carl Berg Gallery.  Kolar’s works are included in several private and corporate collections including the recent acquisition at Pimco Corporation in Orange County. 
Ryan Scails was born in Danbury, CT. Scails’ most recent exhibitions include a solo show titled ‘Another Now’ at SARDINE, ‘Here Today | Gone Tomorrow’ at Space Create (Newburgh, NY) curated by Lacey Fekishazy, ‘Able Bodies’ at 287 Gallery (Danbury, CT), and ‘Object Lessons|Adaptive Research’ at High Desert Test Sites HQ (Yucca Valley, CA). In between shows Scails has also participated in residencies at MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA), A-Z West (Joshua Tree, CA), and will be a JMKAC Arts/Industry (Sheboygan, WI) resident in the Summer of 2020. Scails received his BFA from Cooper Union in 2014. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Karen Tepaz, born in Los Angeles, CA, holds an MFA in Sculpture from Yale University School of Art and a BFA in Ceramics from California State University, Long Beach.  Recent exhibitions include solo shows at SARDINE, (Brooklyn, NY) Thomas Hunter Projects (New York, NY) CACTTUS gallery (Long Beach, CA), and group shows at Underdonk (Brooklyn, NY) Tiger Strikes Asteroid Los Angeles (Los Angeles, CA) Copyright Berlin (DE) The Shirley Fiterman Art Center, BMCC (New York,NY), The Gallery ATLAS (Newburgh, NY), BOMB POP-UP (Brooklyn, NY) among others. In 2018 Tepaz co-curated ‘Flat Touch’ and ‘In Between the Lines’ in Steuben Gallery at Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY). She is the recipient of the Art Farm Nebraska Residency, and will be attending Yaddo this winter 2020. Tepaz lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
About the curator:
Lacey Fekishazy is an artist, curator, gallerist, and draftsperson for the Estate of Sol LeWitt with roots in the Hudson Valley and NYC art communities. After a decade in NYC, Fekishazy currently lives and works in Newburgh, New York with her young family. She has organized the outdoor sculpture/installation show ‘Glenlily Grounds’ (GLG) as part of Newburgh Open Studios for the past 6 years. In 2019, She was invited to co-curate the inaugural exhibition of the Newburgh Sculpture Project at SUNY Orange. Fekishazy earned her MFA at Queens College CUNY in 2010 after working at Dia:Beacon and for the Estate of Sol LeWitt for many years. With a portfolio that spans major public buildings, apartment blocks, hotels, offices and master plans, his design for an Olympic Village helped Paris win its bid for the 2024 Games.
In this talk, Dominique Perrault discusses his new campus centre for Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea. Challenging the client's competition brief, he blended the building into the landscape to connect the campus to the city and create a new public park and, inadvertently, a space for political protest. As Perrault explains, his design for Ewha grew out of his ongoing interest in underground architecture which began with the French National Library.

Here, Barfield discusses MBA's 2015 project for a primary school for the University Of Cambridge. Drawing on extensive research, the design facilitates the latest thinking in primary school teaching methods. With spaces clustered around a central courtyard, it features an open "learning street", a covered external canopy, and artwork that reflects the school's international outlook.

FEDERAL ENVIRONMENT AGENCY, THE: AIMING HIGH WITH SUSTAINABLE DESIGN (MATTHIAS SAUERBRUCH & LOUISA HUTTON)
Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton set up Sauerbruch Hutton in 1989, now based in Berlin. Their best known buildings include the GSW Headquarters in Berlin, for which they were nominated for the Stirling Prize in 2000.
In this talk they focus on the Federal Environment Agency in Dessau, completed in 2005. With its mix of low-tech materials and high-tech production processes, the building was designed to showcase the best in sustainable architecture.
Hutton and Sauerbruch describe the development of the building's curvilinear plan along the route of an old railway line, and their use of colour, a constant in their work; how any sustainable building is only as efficient as the people who inhabit it; and how a concern for environmental efficiency has been a running thread through their work, from their Photonics Centre Berlin in 1998, through Museum Brandhorst, 2008, Munich Re, 2014, and the soon to be completed M9 Museum in Venice-Metre.

Graham Stirk is a senior partner at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, having first joined the practice in 1983 when it was titled the Richard Rogers Partnership. As principal architect on buildings that include the office scheme 88 Wood Street, the luxury residential building One Hyde Park, two airports and a winery, he helps steer the design direction of the practice.
Here Stirk discusses The Leadenhall Building - a speculative office tower in London's financial district. The tower is inclined along the south side to avoid blocking a key view of St Paul's Cathedral, with core services housed in a vertical "cassette" on the north side. The concept of distinct served and servant spaces, borrowed from Louis Kahn, recurs throughout the work of the practice. Stirk also explores the challenges of building across the street from the Lloyd's Register of Shipping - the first building he worked on after graduation and, in contrast to Leadenhall, one of the most bespoke office buildings on the planet - and explains the 11 year lag between commission and completion.

SUNCHEON CITY, KOREA: HOLDING THE ECO-LINE (CHARLES JENCKS)
American-born Charles Jencks is a landscape architect, theorist and critic best known for his Garden of Cosmic Speculation, near Dumfries, Scotland, and his writings on post-modernism. He has designed landscapes projects around the world, including Parco Portello in Milan, Northumberlandia near Newcastle, England and Wu Chi at the Olympic Forest Park in Beijing. Jencks is also co-founder of the Maggie's Centres - a series of cancer care centres designed by leading modern architects, named in honour of his late wife Maggie Keswick.
In this talk, Jencks discusses his recent project Holding The Eco-Line, a landscape design for the Suncheon Bay Expo in 2013. He explains the development of the design, and his Korean hosts' reaction to it, as well as the importance of symbolism in his work. He also discusses his latest creation the Crawick Multiverse, inspired by cutting edge theories of the origin of the universe.

BREAKING INTO CHINA: FENGMING MOUNTAIN PARK (MARTHA SCHWARTZ)
Martha Schwartz first came to prominence with her Boston bagel garden - a radical manifesto for a more artful approach to landscape design. Her recent projects include Dublin Docklands Grand Canal Square in Dublin, Mesa Arts Centre in Arizona and Jacob Javits Convention Center Plaza, New York.
In this talk, she describes her project Fengming Mountain Park in the Chinese city Chongqing for a major Chinese developer. The project is a rectangular section cut through a large construction site, designed to showcase the sales centre for a series of forthcoming residential towers. Building on the idea of zigzagging movement of water down a mountain, she has created a processional route across the site, marked by a series of monumental orange cut-steel structures - like origami mountains on legs - that glow at night.
This is a truly exciting time to be working in China, she says, with construction taking place on an epic scale and developers just beginning to appreciate landscape architecture as art-form.

Keith Bradley is senior partner at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studio, based in Bath, UK. Bradley led FCBS's best known work, the Stirling Prize-winning Accordia Housing Project in Cambridge. He's also worked on major urban regeneration schemes, public museums, galleries and academic buildings.
In this talk, Bradley explores FCBS's Manchester School Of Art extension building, completed in April 2013. He discusses the evolution of the design, which includes a vertical gallery space where students can showcase their work, an interactive hybrid studio intended to foster creative collaboration between students from different disciplines and triple height columns with a relief cast decorative detail inspired by the textiles of Lewis Day, who taught at the school a century ago. Manchester School Of Art was shortlisted for the 2014 Stirling Prize.

Australian-born Rod Sheard is senior principal of leading sports architects Populous. Alistair McAlpine started working for the family building firm Sir Robert McAlpine at the age of sixteen. After his first job on Howard Robinson's Shell Centre on London's South Bank, he want on to work with many of the pre-eminent architects of the post war era: Denis Lasdun, Basil Spence and YRM. His close relationship with Cedric Price spanned many decades, until the latter's death in 2003.
In this talk, McAlpine recalls being summoned by Lasdun during building of the National Theatre and his attempt to matchmake Price with Richard Seifert. He discusses commissioning Classical architect Quinlan Terry to design a series of follies for his personal estate, and his concerns about the current London building boom.

James Gowan, best known for the Leicester University Engineering Building, which he designed along with James Stirling, talks here about his life and work. Now in his eighties, Gowan recalls his training at the Glasgow school of art, his early career in London where he met Geoffrey and Philip Powell, his collaboration with Stirling, and the tensions that forced him to go his own way, just as the pair were coming to prominence.
Gowan's interest in social housing began with Ham Common - the project which launched his partnership with Stirling - and continued with schemes at Creek Road and Trafalgar Road in Greenwich, London. Other buildings include the Schreiber House in Hampstead, London and the latest addition to his Humanitas Hospital, Milan. Still influenced by his Beaux Arts training, Gowan believes he is an architect in the gothic, as opposed to the classical, tradition.

In this update to a 1980 interview with the late Monica Pidgeon, Doshi explores the two great influences on his work: his early mentor Le Corbusier, whose Indian buildings he helped realise, and his roots in India. The construction of his studio Sangath, in the Northern Indian city Ahmedabad, where this talk was recorded, marked a turning point in his career at the age of 50, when these two strands came together.

9/11 MEMORIAL, THE (MICHAEL ARAD)
Michael Arad won the 2003 competition to design the World Trade Centre memorial over more than 5,000 other entries. Born in Israel in 1969, Arad was living in New York City on 9/11. His scheme for the memorial, which began as a personal project in the days and weeks following the World Trade Centre attacks, was based on an image of two vast voids in the Hudson river, reflecting the absence of the demolished towers. The project, which took seven years to complete and was beset by politics and conflict, opened in September 2011 to critical acclaim.
In this talk, Arad, a principle at Handel Architects, describes his ambitions for the project, his determination to protect his original vision in the face of conflicting expectations, and the challenge of winning such a high profile commission so early in his career.

ANT FARM (CHIP LORD)
Chip Lord was a member of radical architecture collective Ant Farm, which he formed with Doug Michels in 1968. The pair were later joined by Hudson Marquez and Curtis Schreier.
In this talk, Lord describes the group's major projects, from the early inflatables to the bubble-like House of the Century, Cadillac Ranch, a comment on American consumerist aspirations, and the provocative re-enactment of the Kennedy assassination, Eternal Frame.
The group broke up in 1978 after a fire destroyed their San Francisco warehouse. After falling out of fashion for several decades, Ant Farm's work is now gaining fresh attention.

American architect Steven Holl trained at the University of Washington and the Architectural Association, London. He set up his own practice Steven Holl Architects in New York City in 1976. His work includes the Kiasma Contemporary Art Museum in Helsinki, Finland (1998), Simmons Hall at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts (2002) and the Storefront for Art and Architecture, New York City (a collaboration with the artist Vito Acconci, 1993).
His more recent projects reflect an interest in a phenomenological approach to architecture. In this talk he discusses three buildings: The Bloch addition to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri (2007), his much-praised mixed-use Linked Hybrid complex in Beijing China (2009), and the Horizontal Skyscraper, officially titled the Vanke Center in Shenzhen, China (2009).

REFURBISHMENT OF NEW YORK'S LINCOLN CENTER, THE (CHARLES RENFRO)
Charles Renfro joined Diller and Scofidio, founded by Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, in 1997. Since Renfro became a partner in 2004, the firm has been known as Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The practice first gained attention for its site-specific, landscape and multi-media work, most notably the Blur Building, a pavilion at the 2002 Swiss Expo. It completed its first major building, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Boston, in 2006. The renovation of the High Line, a formerly disused elevated railway line running along the west side of Manhattan, has become a much loved addition to the city since it opened in summer 2009. The second phase of the High Line opened in summer 2011.
In this talk, Renfro discusses the firm's interventions at the Lincoln Center arts complex in Manhattan's Upper West Side. He discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the original campus, designed in the late 1950s and early 1960s by America's leading architects of the time, and outlines Diller Scofidio + Renfro's approach to the refurbishment. He details the various phases of the project, which include opening up the Julliard music school and the Alice Tully concert hall, reworking Dan Kiley's landscape scheme for the North Plaza, and re-energising the Lincoln Center's front entrance, Robertson Plaza.

CAREER RETROSPECTIVE: JOHN JOHANSEN
John Johansen (born 1916) is best known for his Oklahoma Theatre Centre - inspiration for both Richard Rogers and Frank Gehry - his US Embassy building in Dublin, and his series of symbolic houses.
Here aged 93, in his third talk for P D, he looks back over his career, from studying under Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius, to starting out in New Canaan, Connecticut as a member of the Harvard Five and providing John F Kennedy with one of his most famous lines. His exploration of futuristic building technologies is now focused on nanoarchitecture, which he dubs a new species of architecture.

Michael Wilford, unsupported by his father in his choice of career, had to train the hard way, at North London Polytechnic evening school while working by day for various architectural practices. By good fortune, one of these was Stirling & Gowan who had just won Leicester University Engineering School competition. Later, when Stirling & Gowan split up, Wilford was invited to rejoin the practice and later became a partner.
Michael Wilford, as the former partner of the late James Stirling, inherited the design project for the beautiful new bus station/railway station for Bilbao in northern Spain. At the point when Stirling died, the contract for a second version of the scheme had just been signed. Now, a third version, developed further by the new partnership Michael Wilford & Partners, has been agreed; and it is this version which Wilford describes.
In it the aim is to contribute something to the city generally, to reinforce and intensify the activity of the central area. The new building reconnects the old and new parts of the city. It contains a bus station and two railway systems (at two different levels) with, sandwiched between, a public area for waiting, ticketing and shopping; plus a World Trade Centre, offices and public housing.

WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITY (JOHN THOMPSON)
John Thompson qualified as an architect in 1971, and is a partner in the London practice Hunt Thompson. He became increasingly aware, while working in the public sector for local authorities and housing associations, that he and his colleagues were losing touch with their real clients, the ultimate users of the buildings. He describes in this talk how they overcame this problem, by getting to know these people and their needs and working with them, learning to understand the complex relationship between the physical and the social environment.
The first of their experiences in this field was between 1980 and 1983, at Lea View House, a former slum clearance estate in North London which had fallen into disrepair. The transformation which they wrought, working with the people on the estate, has been widely praised and led to other large inner city projects. They instituted a rolling programme of new build and demolition, moving tenants into new blocks from the ones to be demolished. Thompson also describes large-scale urban projects that his firm has been involved in. He is convinced that architects must get involved in the whole process of the way buildings are created, so as to provide an environment in which buildings and the people that will use them are in harmony.

Boston-Cambridge Market is the No. 1 Life Sciences Cluster in the US
Boston – The U.S. life sciences industry and the real estate that it occupies have ridden a wave of momentum into this year that has positioned various industry hubs, from cornerstones such as Boston to emerging hotspots like Seattle, for outsized growth, according to a new report from CBRE.
That momentum has several markets ascendant on CBRE’s ranking of the top established and emerging life sciences hubs.
The Boston-Cambridge market, for example, is the No. 1 life sciences cluster in the U.S., has 1.9 million sq. ft. of lab space under construction, and received the largest amount of finding in the nation from the National Institutes of Health.

“Demand for laboratory space coupled with vacancy rates in the low single digits continues to apply upward pressure on rental rates in Boston-Cambridge,” said Steve Purpura, Vice Chairman leading CBRE’s Life Sciences business. “As the pace of innovation and growth in the life sciences industry continues to accelerate, it is safe to assume that the Boston-Cambridge Lab market will remain extremely tight for the foreseeable future.”
Numerous indicators point to robust expansion for the industry, including the 86 percent increase in venture-capital funding for U.S. life sciences companies to $15.8 billion for the year ended in September from the previous year. Additionally, life sciences lab space under construction in the industry’s five largest U.S. markets expanded by 101 percent last year to 6.0 million sq. ft.
