Quitting AI, Not Why You'd Think
I had a long and successful career with ChatGPT, honestly. I know people are railing against it on principle, not fully understanding what it can do and what it's capable of. Absolutely, writers should feel threatened by it, not because it produces a quality product but because it likely ripped off their work in its construction.
But my experience with it was largely positive. I always got the warnings, blah-blah-blah can't produce explicit content, but I also got very good at leading it to produce its own explicit content. You'd think OpenAI would be interested in talking with me, to learn how I gamed its own system to get it to produce some really crass, graphic sexual content, but no. Places like that only want to build stronger and higher walls, not learn and grow.
And anyway, it just feeds into my basic resentment toward these organizations that practice zero tolerance toward lovemaking between consensual adults, yet have no stated restrictions against Nazis, hate speech, christofascism, and bigotry. If anything, like in the cases of Substack and Stripe, they find these offensive practices far too lucrative to ever cut off. People who bitch about porn are outsiders, listening to propaganda and misinformation about it, with no education and no idea how to consume it.
Example: Some attention-starved jackass pirates a clip from a porn film, where a man's fucking a woman doggy-style, from behind. That's all you can see, but the jackass uploads it on a shared site, describing it in terms that describe his personal fantasy: "Stepbro Woke Me by Fucking Me Hard" but with more typos. There's nothing in the video that suggests any kind of relationship: it's just a very toned, hairless man having sex with a male-gaze sexdoll, and that's it. But the detractors of porn will claim that some form of incest is taking place, and what's this going to do to the kids, etc.
Well, for one thing, if these puritanical hypocrites weren't so busy shutting down libraries and removing sexual health content from the schools, maybe kids wouldn't be forced to seek out porn to answer their basic and natural questions about biology.
My point is, the critics take this stuff at face value, when it serves their interests. In other cases, they interpret what's happening in the worst way, to suit their agenda. You're all too young to remember Attorney General Edwin Meese's Final Report on Pornography, but in this indictment on porn he likewise cherry-picked source material (he excluded lesbian porn, being too threatened by empowered women seeking their own bliss without men) and contrived the worst interpretations of what he did find. I mean, he's a conservative, so he's going to lie to fulfill his agenda, but still.
My position, as I study the participants of porn and the reviewers of porn and the philosophy of ethical porn, is increasingly that this is a fundamental and primal aspect of the human condition that should be protected, if anything. If people are concerned about abuse and human trafficking, fucking address that. Go after the pedophiles and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law, with prejudice. But if a lonely or horny adult wants to see two beautiful adults fucking each other, gently or hard, there should be no law prohibiting this. Those actors should be protected like any other. They're selling their bodies at least as much as any coal miner or construction worker, and far more than any fucking landlord.
Suppressing this shit only makes it worse, measurably worse. Look at any religious institution that bans marriage out of wedlock or enforces celibacy in its leadership. Each week, the news is full of how badly this practice runs awry, in the ugliest ways. It's priests, pastors, and evangelists who are raping children and raping underage family members and covering up thousands of victims' cases, not porn stars. Yet religious groups still feel they have any position from which to spread lies and condemnation—it illustrates the depth of their hypocrisy.
Wow, I got way off track. I just see all these things connected, everything existing within a system. I write about couples finding creative ways to have sex, but I can't sell my work through PayPal or Stripe because they feel it's their role to enforce morality upon Western society. They claim that porn's a "high risk" category, when actually it was their prudish censorship that drove Tumblr's worth down 99.8%. For that matter, porn created the first secure online financial transaction programs out of necessity, the same goddamn structure that PayPal and Stripe now capitalize on. And Stripe terminated my account, but transferred $7,000 in ad revenue from Twitter to DC_Draino, an avowed white supremacist and misogynist who'd been banned from Twitter prior to the Faulknerian idiot man-child's purchase of it.
So. Stripe's fine with Nazis, but not with lovemaking. In their Prohibited and Restricted Businesses statement, they call out "Pornography and other mature audience content (including literature, imagery and other media) depicting nudity or explicit sexual acts" but nowhere do they forbid anything resembling hate speech or bigotry.
When I pointed this out to them, when I asked their rationale for supporting Nazis, they literally replied "we do not permit adult content." They refused to address the question and then they stopped responding.
So yeah, protecting porn has become part of my platform for protecting freedom of expression. And no, enabling Nazi propaganda does not fall under this (or "freedom of speech" as the profoundly uninformed put it). Tolerance is a social agreement: if you don't agree to it, you're not covered by it, and fascism is all about gaining power to destroy freedom of expression. Anti-intellectuals suggest that fascism can be defeated in the "marketplace of ideas," but what is left to debate after a fucking century of fighting fascism? What fresh, new ideas do we need to hear from Nazis? That's all bullshit, and they know it is, they're just bad-faith actors wasting everyone's time and energy by making them explain it over and over.
Yet Substack will retain and support literal Nazis on their platform, under the aegis of preserving "freedom of speech," while censoring adult content. The CEO of Patreon will go on an alt-right talk show to extol defending "freedom of speech," then suspend an indie news org at the behest of the Proud Boys and terminate adult content accounts where he can find them. Stripe will facilitate the payment of Nazis, while censoring adult content. Hate is too profitable, and love has to be quashed where it's found. That's what our dual governments, the one in Washington DC and the one on Wall Street, are legislating.
So I'm done playing with ChatGPT. I'll build something useful from our collaboration, and I'll find a way to sell it (and pirates in other countries will seize it and distribute it for personal gain (fuck pirates)), but I'm not playing around with ChatGPT anymore. ChatGPT won't suffer for it, though hopefully someday some other smut writer will receive the benefit of my transgressive programming, and in a small way I'll have achieved immortality. Not that I want that, not in a world like this.

The father and daughter duo had been spending two hours together. Évangéline was weary of his mood, what could make a work obsessed man so happy?
Her father had been talking about how much he had missed her for over two hours, recalling the memories of when she was younger. Évangéline was getting more agitated by the second. "Pourquoi es-tu si content!" [Why are you so happy!] She interrupted, immediately feeling bad as she saw the crest fallen expression her father had.
"I just wanted to be better Evie." His serious manner came back. Tears pooled in her eyes, she didn't know what to do. If she knew how her dad felt she wouldn't of bursted.
Although she was happy. Her father wanted to spend time with her, yet she felt as if she was the bad guy. "Sorry, dad." She apologised, looking through her lashes.
"It's fine, I get it. You were probably planning the day to spend with friends. Or Vincent's boy." Évangéline gave her dad a gobsmacked look. "Like I said, he's a good kid." She then continued to narrow her eyes, not wanting to be caught about a massive crush on a boy by her dad. Embarrassing! "Ne me regarde pas comme ça," [don't look at me like that,] he pointed his car keys at his daughter. "The looks I've seen him give you are the ones I gave your mother." He reminisced.
At the mention of the girls mother had her shocked. Her dad had never mentioned her before, even though loving her for so many years. "I'm sorry, Evie."
The scraping of plates and murmurs of gratitude were heard through the courtyard. Évangéline was now enjoying food at a table with her father, they had been catching up within the time she had left Xavier.
Thinking of him, Évangéline couldn't see him anywhere. Évangéline's father could see she was looking around, and had a hunch of who. Her head had snapped in the direction of her father, thanks to his magic, "Chercher." [look up]
She had looked to her previous place from this morning, seeing a sombre Xavier looking at the families. "Excuse-moi," Évangéline excuses herself from the singular table.
Walking up the treacherous steps, she worked up a small sweat. At the fact of this, she paused not wanting to to look a mess. Finishing her walk she saw the boy. "Hi," She was shaking, was she ever one to start a conversation?
The 'Hi' startled Xavier as he gave a, "Woah!" Spinning round he saw Évangéline. Was her hair different? Her makeup? He didn't know, but whatever was different he liked it.
"Are you ok?" It was such a simple question, yet he had such a complex answer. Barely anyone asked him that these days.
Just as he was about to answer, the sheriff had entered the school. "Gomez Addams." Both of the teenagers looked over the railing to see the commotion, abandoning their previous conversation.
"How can I help you sheriff?" Wednesdays dad asked the sheriff, Évangéline had an idea that Mr Addams knew.
"You're under arrest for the murder of Garret Gates." He placed handcuffs into the shorter man. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used abusent you in the court of law."
Évangéline could hear Wednesdays younger brother call out to his father, she felt bad for pugsly? She didn't know his name, Wednesday had probably mentioned him twice.
"You have the right to an attorney." The sheriff continued to drag Gomez away. "If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed for you." Everyone was looking at the scene unfold.
Enid had been complaining all weekend about how her mother wants her to got to Camp Howl to get her to wolf out. But she had finally found the confidence to refuse.
"You'll need to pick which activity-" her mother began.
"No I don't." Enid stopped her mother, seeing a smiling Évangéline and Yoko behind her mother with thumbs up. "Because I'm not going. Not this summer. Not ever. If I'm meant to wolf out, then I'm going to do it in my own timeline and not yours." Évangéline smiled at her friend. "I hope that one day, you'll finally accept me for who I am."
Enid's mother had walked away after Enid's perfect speech. This didn't dampen her smile, instead mad wit even bigger as she had a big bear hug from her father.
It was time for Évangéline to say goodbye to her father. "Prends soin de toi mon chérie." [take care my darling]Her father was smiling, he was happy to spend some time with his daughter. He didn't know whether they were on hugging basis so he turned with a glum smile.
Évangéline knew she had to act fast, she didn't want this moment to end. Who knows what he'll be like next time she sees him. So, she tackled the older into a hug from behind. The two were there for what seemed to be hours, neither of them minded.

Maritza was born to two mutant parents, who were both relatively high profile people (although they weren’t known mutants). Her parents met in Meixco when Francisco was visiting his very sick grandmother at the time. They met, fell in love, and married after a few years of dating. They originally lived in Los Angeles and that’s where Maritza was born. For the first eleven years of her life, Maritza’s life was normal. Until the day her parents say her down to tell her that they were divorcing. She moved with her mom to New York rather than staying with her father in California. Although Maritza did go visit her father every summer.
Both her parents were the creative types, but Maritza was one of those people that was more driven by scholarly achievements. It was rare for her to bring home horrible grades and while other students her age focused on their social lives, Maritza sat at home rereading assignments and doing extra work to make sure that she understood the assignments that she was being given. Both her parents were always baffled by this although they supported their child because they weren’t sure what else to do otherwise, she clearly was smart and driven enough.
Growing up, Maritza was aware of mutants, as both her parents were. They never really talked about mutants, nor gave her a reason to like or dislike them. Maritza turned out to not have any sort of mutation. There was an unspoken rule of just “not talking about mutants” in their household, though Maritza often asked questions, and as a curious, bookish child, she ended up learning what information out there. Like most things, she came to the conclusion that like non-mutants, all humans had good and bad in them. It’s also unspoken that Maritza has no idea her mom is involved with the Hellfire Club.
Since her family never had to worry about money, Maritza had a bit of a bleeding heart. When she saw someone in need, she tried to help them out with whatever she could. She got into arguments with tons of people over little things that she thought were important. From a very young age, she wanted to be a lawyer. She was passionate about the law. Maritza focused on her school, getting good grades and padding her resume for college applications. Her senior year of high school, she applied for several Ivy League schools and ended up going to Brown.
Like in high school, Maritza focused on her school when she was in college, but her roommate at the time was a lot more of a party girl. Despite the fact that they were opposites, Maritza ended up being really good friends with her roommate. She ended up going to parties with her roommate every so often. Her junior year of college, towards the end of the year, Maritza ended up at a random party with her roommate and met someone. She doesn’t remember everything that happened that night, but she does remember the guy’s first name. That’s about it though. Maritza’s fun little night out turned into a pregnancy she wasn’t exactly prepared for.
Thankfully, her mom was understanding and supported Maritza, but her father was furious at her, resulting in her not speaking to him. She finished the rest of the school year off with the intention that she’d come back the next fall, but it was a tough summer for her and ultimately she decided that she couldn’t have a child. Right before giving birth, Maritza ran off to Boston to stay with some family friends. She couldn’t keep the child, so she left him with a note, wrapped in a small green blanket, placed in a cardboard box at the doors of a church. And then she returned to her home.
After that Maritza focused on her education, shutting herself off from the distractions of boys and girls around her age. She finished school and applied to Yale Law School where she graduated, while working a temp job at a local attorney’s office. She moved back to New York after graduating and began focusing on her career. Being a driven person meant that she focused on work until she had a partnership at her firm and took it over.
As an attorney, she has a reputation as being the type to help most people. Her firm does take on a ton of pro bono cases and since she is managing partner at her firm, she decides a lot of the cases. Her mom helps out with money when necessary, as she still is wealthy. Maritza is the type to listen to most of her clients before making decisions and wants to believe the best in people. Although she has mostly made a name for herself with civil cases rather than criminal ones. She puts a lot of heart into her work because she thinks this is the best way to help people and it makes her feel less guilty about abandoning her child. However, she does like to have a little fun here and there, finding her job less stressful. A lot of her hobbies include things that are more academic, like book club and playing chess with people in the park. And she always has a glass of wine with her dinner.
Maritza has always felt like a part of her has focused on her career to distract from the fact that she did abandon a baby at a church, but for a long time she put off thinking about it. She always said that when she was older, when she felt like she could handle it, she’d go in search of the child, make sure they had a stable home and a family that cared for them. Now, at the age of forty one without a family, she decided to hire an investigator to follow paper trails and find her child. She is nervous for whatever the investigator finds, but she knows if she would have raised the child, neither of them would have ended up happy. Still, she pushes any guilt she has regarding that down because it does no one good.

AGE 4 - 8: her parents announced to her (at the age of 4) that she was gonna have a sibling, and of course, she had no idea what that meant. only 5 months later when her mother started showing, her belly got bigger and bigger.
when her mother gave birth and her sibling was born, at first she was really jealous because she had a hard time sharing her parents with someone new. but after two weeks she got very protective over her sibling. and not so long later; she was gonna have another sibling. this time she reacted opposite than the first time her parents announced she was gonna have another sibling. to dila, this meant she was growing up! and that’s all she wanted because this meant the more grown up she was; the more she could make choices by herself. she was way too mature for her age. she would literally put her siblings in their baby chairs and give them a random speech about why pencils were way more better than crayons. her siblings, who had no idea what their sister was talking about, sat there while making a mess of their food.
the older she got, the more she was facing reality. her parents, started to argue more and more. the older she got, the more she was taking responsibility over her siblings. when her parents would argue, she’d take her siblings upstairs and give them another speech; only this time, it was to distract them from all the yelling and the shattering sounds of plates that was coming from downstairs.
AGE 8 - 23: she turned eight and her father didn’t show up to her birthday party. she had waited and refused to blow the candles on her birthday cake until he’d show up. but he didn’t. later that night, when her mother had tucked her three kids in bed, she heard her father’s voice from downstairs. she made her way out her room and sat on the stairs as she listened to their conversation. she heard it all. her father had cheated on her mother and he has another child with another woman. happy birthday, dila. with a heavy heart and tears in her eyes she went to bed that night. crying herself to sleep as the words of her father to her mom kept repeating in her head, it were words that were anything but sweet and nice. she felt so bad for her mom and the fact their family was going to fall apart.
the next day, the next few weeks after she had witnessed the conversation of her mom and dad, she had been taking care of her siblings. their mother had distanced herself from them a little. she would lock herself in her room and not come out until dinner time or whenever she had to. their mother tried her hardest best not to show her sad emotions to her children, but dila knew all too well how her mother was feeling.

as dila turned fifteen they moved to san francisco as her mother had gotten an amazing opportunity to work with another law firm, after all .. her mother was one of the most well known lawyer in the country. however, this didn't mean she gave up on her own law firm. in fact, she’s now working together with the other law firm that needed her mother's help.
it took them a while to get adjusted to a new place, but they made it work somehow. high school wasn’t too bad for dila than she had assumed so. she had amazing grades and she had made many friends at school. also, boys that were trying to get her attention from left and right. of course, she loved the attention, but it never changed the way she was. she had a few boyfriends but as soon as the subject of ‘future’ popped up, she usually always had an excuse to excuse herself. or she’d just immediately change the subject. or was just straight up honest with them and mention that she didn’t saw a future with them just yet or maybe never would. it was painful, but the cold hard truth, right?
however, at the age of twenty she met a guy and they started going out more. they seemed to have the same interests which caused dila to be more comfortable around them. they went out at nights, cracked up at each others jokes even if they were really bad. the subject about ‘their future’ never really came up at any of their conversations until she turned twenty two and he asked her to move in with him. at first; she hated the thoughts of it. but, she liked the idea of being a little more independent without her mother always telling her what to do. so, she agreed to move in. and a year later, she graduated.
AGE 24 - 31: at the age of twenty four she started to work at her mothers law firm. not as a lawyer yet, because she wasn’t experienced just yet. so she was basically doing all the file works for her mother until she was experienced enough and started working as a divorce attorney.
fast forward, everything seemed to go so well. until a month or two ago and her and her boyfriend decided to separate their ways. things weren't really working out like it did before, they were arguing a lot. (+ the fact dila is way too scared for 'official' commitment to each other, aka - getting married). dila was way too overwhelmed with feelings. especially because she had too many cases that involved divorcing (obviously) and it really made her think a lot. and him proposing to her really didn’t make it that easy for her either. but, something that is definitely gonna make this separation difficult is the fact she's currently two months pregnant.

Chapter Two: If It May Please Me

Dun-Dah-Dah-Dun-Dun, Dun-Dah-Dah-Dun-Dun, Dun- Dah-Dah-Dah.
The climactic suspenseful music started off soft. It was so soft it barely broke through your subconscious enough to pull you from your sleep. Though it wasn’t incredibly loud, you still felt your body stir. Flipping onto your belly, you sprawled your arms out across the bed and moaned.
Dun-Dah-Dah-Dun-Dun, Dun-Dah-Dah-Dun-Dun, Dun- Dah-Dah-Dah.
The sound became much louder which prompted a groan, then a mumble.
“Stop.”
However, it didn’t stop. It got really loud breaking through every subconscious barrier. Your brain knew this tune, your body immediately tensed knowing just who had called you. Like some creature of the night, you sprang from your bed ignoring that your body actually had a spine. You crouched into some ungodly position as if ready to pounce like a wild animal listing to the call of the wild which was in fact, Wagner’s “Ride of The Valkyries.” You stared at your phone on your bedside table but didn’t move.
After another round it stopped and slowly you began to relax. Lowering yourself, you crawled along the length of your king-sized bed to the headboard where you leaned your back against. Feeling as if you’d dodged a bullet, you let out a sigh of relief. Unfortunately, the universe had a stellar sense of humor. “Ride of The Valkyries” began again. You groaned. The plan wasn’t to talk to him until at least the day after tomorrow or even the end of the week when he’d gotten wind of where you’d winded up. However, true to his personality and his aggressive assertiveness he didn’t want to wait. The man was insufferable. How you’d come from that tree, you didn’t know.
After one set of ringing, it ended. The quietness in your bedroom stretched on for thirty seconds, then a minute. Once you’d reached two whole minutes without a call you sighed, confident he wouldn’t make a third attempt. One thing your father was if not a hard ass, was predictable. He was now under the assumption that you would be the one to place the next call. He was in for a rude awakening when he realized he had to be the one to call so he could berate you for going against him yet again.
A smile stretched across your face as you pictured the large vein he had in his forehead popping out as his right eye twitched from how angry he was. Unable to control yourself, you snorted out then laughed. You wondered if he had any idea who you were those years ago when he gave you your first ultimatum which prompted your leaving Washington to spread your wings. He didn’t then, but you guessed he was beginning to see the fibers of what you were made of. Soon it would be crystal. He’d started a war.
You sank down into the still warm sheets and stretched, allowing every vertebra and muscle to elongate fully. As your joints cracked and body opened up you became aware of the aches and soreness throughout your body. You paused and took note of them one by one. Tight thighs, aching back, tender abs, sore nether regions.
“Oh my god,” you said through a smile that grew with each passing second.
When you were full on cheesing from the memories of the night before you rolled onto your belly and kicked your legs as a you squealed into the plush sheets. After ending your gleeful freakout on a scream, you flipped back over and stared at the ceiling.
“Fuck. You are pure art. I could never have my fill. You are wonderland.”
Your smile grew.
“How is it possible for every inch of you to be absolutely gorgeous?”
You clenched your bottom lip between your teeth as you dove further down the rabbit hole of your memory.
“Please don’t stop.”
The feel of your hand between your legs took you by surprise. A soft gasp escaped you as your back slightly arched off the bed.
“Have mercy,”
You moaned. Though most of his features were cloaked in shadow, you remembered his amber eyes. They were absolutely unforgettable. He looked at you in a unique way. It almost seemed as if he were looking through you, seeing all the way to your very heart and soul. The entire night you were enraptured by that look and the ease he commanded your body to his will. Your fingers sped and the room filled with the sound of your breathy pants.
“I’ve never tasted anything as delicious as you.”
The memory of his face between your thighs fueled you on and within seconds you were chasing your released. Your fingers mirrored what you remembered of his mouth’s movements. Though it wasn’t a perfect match it was enough, as long as you didn’t lose the memory of his shadowed face. Your panting grew louder until you were whining.
“You looked like you liked to ride,”
You dipped two of your fingers inside of your core. Rather than tense up from the discomfort of soreness you felt, your body erupted, sending you over the edge and into the soft clouds of your climax.
“Yes!”
It was a shriek that echoed throughout the room, but you weren’t present enough to care if anyone else heard it. Through the haze in your brain, you heard your phone ringing again. Without looking you reached for it and placed it to your ear.
“Hello?”
“N—Nova?”
Your eyes snapped open, instantly recognizing the masculine voice. You didn’t move one inch, instead you stayed as still as a corpse as if they were now somehow in the room looking for signs of life.
“Hello?”
You didn’t answer. Your body’s weight returned to you as did every other weight you carried daily.
“I—I know you’re there Nova. You don’t have to say anything, just listen. I’ve been calling for months; you don’t answer my calls. I wouldn’t have had this number if it weren’t for Georgie. Look, I know you probably don’t want to hear from me but—I—I miss you No bear.”
You shuddered at the nickname and every memory it brought back. As you opened your mouth to speak you heard a hissing sound inside your head. It was the hiss of a snake.
“I know I fucked up and I’m sorry. I swear it never meant I didn’t love you.”
It was a snake you knew. Pulling the phone from your ear you ended the call and flung the phone across the bed. Your brain fired off like fireworks going over multiple things at once. Your history, the last several months, the reason for your recent celibacy and the epic end of that celibacy. Annoyance filled you so suddenly you sprung up. Just when you were beginning to let it go like Elsa and keep rolling on the river like Tina here this came.
“I’m going to fucking kill Georgie.”
You grabbed your phone again and shot a message off.
MSG: What a way to throw a bitch under the bus. You’re fucking dead to me.
You walked to the bathroom while stripping off your long lace chemise and leaving it on the floor. Once inside, you turned on the water in the shower then went about gathering your things. It was day two back in D.C, but you still hadn’t unpacked. You knew it wouldn’t be gotten to until damn near close to the middle of next month. Unpacking was the worst. Your phone went off on the bathroom counter bringing your attention to it.
MSG Georgie: *Dramatic gasp* Wow. You kiss your mother with that mouth?
Snorting, you tapped out your reply.
MSG: I have better people to be kissing, like a particular brown eyed brit from last night but you’re dead to me.
MSG Georgie: No, back it up, back it up. what brown eyed brit from last night? Is that why your ass didn’t call or text me back? were you on your knees for some rando?
MSG: On my knees, back, side, elbows, shins, fuck fingertips and toes too. 😝
MSG Georgie: Aaaaaaaaah! WTF, WTF? Who? Also how does one get on fingertips?
Your giggle echoed in the bathroom.
MSG: Downward dog bitch!
The gif of Cardi B that came in was a bit of an insider joke that never got old.
MSG: Getting in the shower, meet at Knox on Perth in 40 minutes. Make sure you wear what you want to be buried in.
With that, you placed your phone down and got in the shower, you planned on getting some answers from Georgie.

-One Hour Later-
“What!? I most certainly did not give that miniature dick having piece of shit your number!”
You raised a brow as you took her in. You’d known Georgie since day one of law school. She’d actually been one of the many to know who you were and resent you for it. However, after the first four months of school and being paired together for a major moot court that you ended up winning, she learned a lot about you, mainly how much you weren’t anything like how she’d thought. Since that day you’d been besties and after graduating she accompanied you on your international spread your wings law trip. She’d been in D.C for almost eight months now since joining a different firm with a very lucrative wooing package.
“You didn’t?”
“Hell no! Why would I do that? I hate his ass too.”
“Do you? Then why did you sing his praises for a good three months after we broke up?”
“I wasn’t. He came off like a good guy. It totally blindsided me when he turned out to be such an ass.”
A few seconds later, Georgie gasped. “Wait, I think he did get your number from me. He’d been at the table with the party I was with, turns out he knew them too. I went to the bar and left my purse hanging off the chair. I thought it would be safe especially since I would only be gone for five minutes. When I came back my purse was resting on the seat and my phone on the table. I didn’t even think about it, I thought I’d just drank too much to remember. Oh my god, Nova, I think he went through my phone for your number.”
She looked so guilty, but you instantly reached your hand out to rest on hers. “It’s okay Georgie. How were you to know?”
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry.”
“It’s fine. I’m not mad now. I’ll just block him.”
“And if he keeps calling?”
“Change my number. It’s all good. Let’s move on.”
You dropped your eyes to the plates that had just been delivered to the table and tried to decide which one you were going to start with.
“This avocado toast looks amazing.”
You grabbed a slice then moaned as your teeth sunk into the thick brioche bread that was topped with diced tomatoes, fire roasted corn, cilantro, and crumbly blue cheese. As the flavors burst over your tongue you moaned and nodded your head.
“Try it,”
Georgie grabbed a slice, as you made a plate with a few options from the plated scattered around the table. The two of you ate in silence for a few minutes, both getting lost in one of the many things you had in common—food. Before long, Georgie piped up.
“So how long until you spill your unholy guts and tell me who was in them guts last night?”
You busted out laughing fighting hard to keep the food in your mouth and not splattered over the table or her face.
“Really, Georgie?”
“What? He wasn’t in the guts? The colon?”
She slapped her hand across her mouth emulating faux shock.
“Finally dabbling in the multiple ways of pleasure you’ve neglected and written off?”
“Oh my god, Gigi!”
Her laugh would have made Gru proud because it was definitely on evil mastermind level.
“Spill it! What’s his name?”
Fighting a smile, you took a long sip from your glass.
“Al.”
Georgie gagged. “What a horrible name. Is it short for something?”
You shrugged. “Maybe.”
“Eooow, no talking just straight f--.
“Aht, aht, aht! Behave.”
After another bite of food, you told her everything with censor. You knew she could read into the censored parts, that’s how well you knew each other. With every detail you revealed her eyes widened more and more. From the smile on your face, she got even giddier. By the time you got to the haiku he recited, she’d melted and remained a complete puddle until the very end.
“Holy shit, Nova! That’s fucking hot!”
Nodding, you took another sip of your drink.
“When do you see him next?”
You shrugged. “We didn’t exchange information.”
“He obviously lives in the complex. Find out which one.”
“What? No. It was clearly a one-night thing. If I just show up somehow out the blue, he’s gonna think I’m a nutjob and run. Also, there are like four penthouses, I’m not gonna go knocking at each of them.”
“Why? Girl, clearly last night was amazing for you and even more so for him.”
“How do you know that?”
“Uh hello, my best-fren knows how to put it down, that I have no doubt of.”
You smiled then sat up straighter as you waved around to an imaginary audience of admirers. She was always hyping you up.
“So, I am sure he is having the best memories today. This could be an opportunity for you to officially move on from--.”
You lifted your hand holding it up while shaking your head.
“I’ve been way over that. I just wanted to focus on work.”
“Right, so now that you’re back maybe a relationship could develop.”
She knew she was just wasting her breath at this point. Months ago, the thought of a relationship made you anxious and break out in hives, now not much had changed. It wasn’t something you felt you wanted to put yourself through. There were too many variables, too many things that could wrong. Facts were the cornerstone of your life, facts and the truth. Relationships didn’t have any of those. One’s facts could be different for the other party while the truth was always subjective, everyone always had their own version of it. What was the point.
“Let’s just leave it at an amazing night, a night that is long overdue. Be happy I’ve gotten back on the horse.”
She snorted.
“Sounds like he might actually be a horse, ol’ Seabiscuit looking ass.”
“He was big. It’s been a long time since I woke up sore.”
The look Georgie gave you made you laugh so hard—too hard.
“I’ll let you rejoice in your one night of slutdome, but I want it known that I think you should see him again and see where things go. Now that I’ve said my piece let’s drink to you finally wiping away those cob webs off your cooch.”
Your loud laugh echoed around the restaurant and brought plenty of eyes. Rather than caring, you and Georgie tapped glasses and drank your cocktails. For the remainder of brunch, she gave you the rundown of her firm—Malooney, O’Rourke & Norwood which was a big-name firm in its own right. They took plenty of high profiled criminal cases and their track record was always impressive. They managed to stay on the right side of ninety percent which was relatively unheard of in criminal law.
After brunch the two of you went shopping. While you had enough clothes you wanted to update your D.C fashion so you’d fit in while standing out. You’d learned long ago that being an attorney your appearance mattered almost as much as the law you were representing. Your appearance could win the case for you by intimidating the opposing counsel while impressing the judge. A good outfit had never steered you wrong.
Once you’d spent a small fortune on more than enough outfits complete with shoes and accessories you and Georgie split up with promises to meet up that night. You then proceeded to knock out a few errands on your to do list that would jumpstart your work week. Mostly everything had been handled over the phone or online, so it only left things that required a more personal touch. At the grocery store, you filled your carts then set up home delivery for later that evening, then stopped by the florist to pick out and schedule a few bouquets to also be delivered that evening. Once those were complete, you zoomed through your visit to the pharmacy and the bank to ensure everything had switched seamlessly.
By the time you got back home, you were just in time to receive the deliveries. It took more time than you’d expected to pack them away and set up the flowers just where you wanted them. You finished just in time to watch the sunset over the Potomac which again took your breath away. You sat in front of the large panoramic windows with a glass of wine and lost yourself in the serenity of it all while using the quiet to look over the final paperwork in prep for your first day at G&E.
You’d lost track of the time by the time your phone chimed.
MSG Vi: Are you gonna be late? I feel like you will be. You’re always late? Has that changed about you?”
You glanced at the time then sprang to your feet.
“Shit.”
MSG: Nope. I will be on time thank you very much!
You closed your laptop and hurried around tidying up after yourself, then hurried to get yourself together. You had forty minutes to get to the location that was just pin dropped to you. If you were honest, it would be a miracle if you weren’t late.

-Two Hour Later-
“I am so glad you’re back; it’s been too long since we’ve done this,” Nadine said as she threw her arms around your neck for the fifth time.
“I missed you too Didi.”
She’s changed a lot in the last three years. You didn’t know if it was the job or your parents. She’d managed to get away to a degree but that didn’t mean she your father still didn’t pull his strings like he was the puppet master.
She smiled wide and hugged you again. When you’d gotten there five measly minutes late, they were already on round three of drinks. Now you all had ingested your fair share of alcohol and it was beginning to take effect. None of you cared what you drank, the only policy was the stronger the better. The drinks flowed, the music blasted and the four of you including Georgie danced your asses off not caring who wanted to watch or snap pictures. Most knew what the Joy sisters looked like, for all your lives you’d been harassed by paps and your pictures had been posted in several newspaper as well as blogs. The only time you got a reprieve was the last three years as you traveled. No one cared about an American judge’s offspring. Now being back you loathed to think it would start up again.
After losing rock, paper, scissors you trudged through the crowd to the bar to claim another round of drinks. As you waited for your large order you scrolled through your phone and took a few selfies. Across the bar on the opposite side, you caught a pair of eyes on you. Pretending as if you didn’t know, you struck another pose and took a few more selfies. Slyly, you glanced across the way but could barely make out who you saw. The very dim lights in the club made it impossible to make out anything but a strong jawline, full lips, and a trim nose. Somehow though, recognition scratched at the back of your brain.
Squinting, you focused trying to stave off your foggy vision to try to make out more of the stranger who was wearing a tie in a club. Who wore a tie in a club? Fighting back a laugh, you leaned forward but your view was blocked by a body in front of you.
“From the gentleman across the way. He says if you want to see more all you have to do is come over.”
You smirked as you looked inside the glass that was before you. It smelled like gin.
“What’s this?”
“Negroni—says you look like the sweet and spicy type.”
You peered around the bartender’s body and found a smirk on his lips, but it didn’t look like one of cockiness, it looked like amusement. You lifted the glass to your lips and took a hearty sip then moaned. The sweet of the orange and the spice of the gin worked well together. Tonight, he was right.
“Tell the gentleman that no matter how much I’d like to see more, I go to no man.”
You knocked the rest of the drink back and raised the empty glass to him before placing it on the bar.
“Thank him for the drink though.”

Does the First Amendment Protect Discrimination?

When Justice Sonia Sotomayor was asked about 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis at oral argument in December 2022, she stated: “[this is] the first time in the Court’s history…[that] a commercial business open to the public, serving the public, that it could refuse to serve a customer based on race, sex, religion, or sexual orientation” [4]. The case of 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis concerns a Colorado web designer named Lorie Smith, who sought an injunction to prevent the state of Colorado from forcing her to create websites that celebrate same-sex weddings [5]. On June 20th, 2023, the US Supreme Court conservative majority ruled that the constitutional right to free speech allows certain businesses to refuse to provide services for same-sex weddings [1].
Lorie Smith is a Denver-area web designer and sole owner of her company 303 Creative LLC. Her company services include marketing, graphic designing, and website designing. Smith wanted to start selling custom web designs for weddings. However, because Smith identifies as an evangelical Christian, she believes that “marriage should be reserved to unions between one man and one woman” [5]. She highlights her faith on the company website, stating “As a Christian who believes that God gave me the creative gifts that are expressed through this business…I am selective about the messages that I create or promote - while I will serve anyone I am always careful to avoid communicating ideas or messages, or promoting events, products, services, or organizations, that are inconsistent with my religious beliefs'' [2]. The website also expresses that what separates them from their competition is their belief “that a deeply personal relationship with [their] clients is essential to providing services that exceed [their] expectations'' [2]. Thus, Smith believes that the combination of her religious beliefs and company values would conflict with her ability to provide service to customers of a sexual orientation that does not align with her ideology. Ultimately this would result in Smith discriminating against potential clients that are a part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Because Smith operates in Colorado, discriminating against customers of specific sexual orientations goes against Colorado's anti-discrimination act. The Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act (CADA) guarantees equal access to public accommodations, housing, and employment regardless of disability, race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation (including transgender status), marital status, family status, religion, national origin, or ancestry [3]. Colorado law considers a place of public accommodation as any place of business engaged in any sales to the public and any place offering services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations to the public, including but not limited to any business offering wholesale or retail sales to the public [6]. Under the CADA, Smith’s business was a place of public accommodation, so it was unlawful to withhold her business from people because of their sexual orientation [6]. Smith understood this, and on September 20th, 2016, Smith and her attorneys, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), filed their first case against the defendant Aubrey Elenis, Director of the Colorado Civil Rights Division, at the United States District Court in Colorado [6]. In this case, Smith and ADF asked the court to prohibit the state anti-discrimination act so she could only provide her wedding website design services to straight couples [4]. Smith and ADF alleged that the CADA violated her free speech clause of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution [6]. The court stated that the because the Banned-Speech Provision is content-based, it regulates speech on topics like disability, race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, and ancestry—while leaving unregulated speech on various other topics not listed in CADA [6]. Because Smith wanted to state her position against same-sex marriage on her website, it would go against the Banned-Speech Provision [6]. Thus, Smith lost this first case against Elenis and was still required to abide by the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act.
On October 19th, 2016, the defendants argued a case dismissal because Smith had received no actual inquiries for services and is only a theory as to what may happen if it occurs, thus Smith has suffered no injury [7]. The defense provided support from a previous statement from the Supreme Court that a “theory of standing, which relies on a highly attenuated chain of possibilities, does not satisfy the requirement that threatened injury must be certainly impending” [7]. In Smith’s first case against Elenis, she never mentioned an inquiry from a customer that wanted her to design a website to celebrate their same-sex wedding [4]. When Smith’s attorneys, ADF, first responded in November 2016, they did not mention the inquiry but decided to refute the defense’s claims. ADF stated that Smith did not need to have received an inquiry to challenge the CADA [4]. It was not until February 2017 that ADF included the inquiry of a man named “Stewart” and argued its relevance to the case [4]. Stewart is only addressed by his first name because that was the only name provided on the case filing [4]. Although his name, phone number, email address, and website were on the inquiry form, he says he never sent the form and was married to a woman when it was sent [4]. Stewart, who is a web designer himself, stated that “it didn’t make sense to him…why [he] would seek to hire someone who has never built a wedding website…to build his wedding website” [4]. Ultimately, Stewart remained puzzled stating “I'm married, I have a child-I’m not really sure where that came from? But somebody’s using false information in a Supreme Court filing document” [4]. Thus, in September 2017, the federal court ruled the case dismissed because the evidence presented did not allow the court to “determine the imminent likelihood that anyone much less a same-sex couple, [would] request [Smith’s] services” [4]. Although the validity of the inquiry from “Stewart” has not been officially confirmed, it raised the question of how the use of fictitious information determines the ruling of a Supreme Court case.
When 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis reached the Supreme Court, the Colorado court rejected Smith’s proposals twice. However, the Justices ruled 6-3 in favor of Smith to overturn the lower court's rulings and exempt her from the CADA [1]. The Justices held that the First Amendment prohibits Colorado from forcing a website designer to create expressive designs speaking messages with which the designer disagrees [5]. When giving his opinion of the Court, conservative Justice Gorsuch stated that the Court acknowledged that Smith’s planned wedding website qualifies as “pure speech” protected by the First Amendment [5]. He also stated that the First Amendment’s protections belong to all, including speakers whose motives others may find misinformed or offensive [5]. Justice Sotomayor presented her dissenting opinion describing the case ruling as “heartbreaking” [5]. She expresses her opposition to the ruling stating, “The business argues, and a majority of the Court agrees…that because the business offers services that are customized and expressive, the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment shields the business from a generally applicable law that prohibits discrimination in the sale of publicly available goods and services. That is wrong. Profoundly wrong” [5]. She further explains her opinion by arguing that the law in question targets conduct, not speech, for regulation, and the act of discrimination has never constituted protected expression under the First Amendment. Our Constitution contains no right to refuse service to a disfavored group [5]. The divided opinions provided by the Supreme Court Justices display the different interpretations of the case and how they are affected by polarizing political influence.
