Benvi has always been the main ship from the very beginning. Devi’s feelings for Ben always being the most clear, whenever Ben showed genuine concern and care for her. Also, all these scenes happening in every season finale, with their story being the main focus.

literally the only two endings that would make any narrative sense for nhie is devi ending up with ben or devi ending up by herself. i'm not even speaking as a benvi shipper here. if you actually pay attention the show and catch onto the clues, those are the only possible endings that would wrap up her story in a satisfying way. especially after the events of 3x10.

I kind of talked about this in my tags, but I also think that Darren's casting may not have taken acting skill into account that much. Which, honestly, always a bad move.

I don't think Paxton was initially supposed to be a super major, well-developed character. He wasn't actually developed at all in season 1, and it feels like they decided to develop him (imo unsuccessfully) in season 2. So, on some level, they probably were just looking for someone "hot."

He had no role in season 1 besides "Devi's supposedly-hot crush."

This is in stark contrast to Ben, who was conceived independently of Devi/created as a mirror to her. He was initially not set to be in a ship with her (though the possibility was always there), and Jaren's screen test was the dermatology office scene in 1x6 (showing that he always had a PoV episode before Benvi was a thing). I think that this is why they may have prioritized finding someone more talented for Ben, though I think they probably didn't know they were winning the fuckin lottery with Jaren lol. And this is also why Ben is objectively a better-rounded, better-developed character. He exists in his own right while Paxton was literally nothing but a dream for Devi.

I like Paxton fine, especially as a friend for Ben. I have nothing against him and think he's a nice guy. I'm glad his storyline got a good ending. But I cannot connect with him. And this is on the show's team: they really needed to do more with him early on if they wanted most of the audience to connect with him on a personal level as well as a horny one.

I honestly don't have much to add because this is so well worded and I agree with all of it. 💕

I like Paxton, too! I think he's a genuinely good person, especially after season three when he was allowed to do his own thing apart from being Devi's love interest, but I can't bring myself to root for him, not only because I find Ben far more compelling as a character, but Paxton, for the most part, is kinda boring, especially on his own. I like his connection with his sister and his grandpa, but that's mostly because I find them more interesting as characters than Paxton himself.

Also, we can't forget Trent, that bromance has far more chemistry than Paxton/Devi by a long shot, but again, Trent has far more personality than Paxton does for most of the show, and adds on to the "I like Paxton's connections to other people more than the character himself" thing.

Sidenote: I'm friends with a girl at work with whom I've briefly discussed the show with and the only reason she was ever on Paxton's side was because she found him attractive and he's nice, but nothing else really stands out for him as a character. (She finds Ben pretty funny, so she's good. 😂)

This is my favorite thing to talk about ever:

So benvi has become like one of my all time favorite ships. Childhood Academic rivals to reluctant friends to lovers is a god tier trope. They encapsulate everything I love in a ship.

1. They understand each other:

Example of this is in season 1 when Ben gets Fabiola and Eleanor to talk Devi into going to spread her dads ashes and make up with her mom. Ben knew that they were the only people who could get her to go. He also understood just how important it was for her to go.

Another example of this is all the subtle looks they give each other, especially in class.

2. They make each other better:

They do this through many things, one of the things being their academic rivalry. Through their competitiveness they have managed to make each other better and more well rounded students. They push each other to work harder and better.

They also just make each other better people in general. The closer Ben and Devi got the more Ben began to break out of his “asshole” persona and become a more likable person. He also got more confident in himself and his ability to make friends. Also standing up to his parents was huge and that was in large part due to Devi.

Through their relationship/ friendship Devi has been forced to start to grow a little. Ben pushing her to make amends with the people she has wronged (her mom, Aneesa). He has helped her start to heal! Ben has helped her become a less selfish person.

3. They have similar goals and ambitions:

They both want to go to Ivy League schools and plan on having somewhat high powered careers . (I’m partial to them going into a STEM type of career but that’s just me).

4. They are able to be themselves around each other.

The times Devi’s true personality comes through is when she is with Ben. She doesn’t ever have to put up a front to try to “be cool”. She allows her walls to come down and to be vulnerable with him. Something that she has never done with Paxton. She trusts Ben completely and that he is the one person who she feels like she can really talk to.

Same thing with Ben, he is way more comfortable with Devi than he is with anyone else. He is a kind and wonderful person and Devi is one of the only people to always see that side of him. Even before they were friends he expressed concern for her and knew when something was wrong with her. She alone is one of the only people that really knows how his relationship with his parents really is.

They are each other’s best friends!!

Also, the use of this line when Devi kisses Ben kills me, “All my life I’ve been hiding myself, just waiting for a boy like you”

I don’t know if this was intentional or not but this line really solidifies just how vulnerable Devi is with Ben. She hides herself from everyone, except Ben.

5. The banter!!!

The slightly insulty banter with the underlying sexual tension… there truly is nothing else like it.

6. THEIR INSANE CHEMISTRY!!!!!!!

In conclusion, these two are the pure definition of soulmates. This ship is so superior to d*xton is every way. I am incapable of being normal about them and I make zero apologies for it.

It’s dangerous posting this right now, but it just baffles me how people are now attacking BJ Novak, a real person, for a show that he has no involvement in over a ship that was obviously bound to happen anyways. Like, I knew a portion (not all obviously) of D*xton shippers in NHIE were not exactly known for emotional maturity or logical thinking, but this is just ridiculous.

I mean, I‘ve been petty over ships before (I am still not over how they massacred Cordueva in Jane The Virgin, and I‘ve been complaining a week ago about how much I hate Nick and Meredith‘s relationship in Grey‘s Anatomy), but this is just ridiculous and incredibly invasive and disrespectful.

I don‘t really support messaging celebrities about their personal lives in general (though I am obviously fully on board with discussing those online), but how delusional do you have to be to write multiple comments asking a creator of a show to „heal“ and „move on“ from a personal relationship just because you feel entitled to have what you assumed was the main ship in a FICTIONAL SHOW as endgame.

(Also, I will never get how they did not see this coming or how people can complain about the writing not making any sense- have we been watching the same show? Regardless, I obviously don‘t mean all D*xton shippers, but seriously: get your acts together. If you‘re this hellbound on seeing the main girl end up with the popular boy she had a crush on, there are about 27495013 other teen shows and movies you can watch, and if you like NHIE for its humour, friendships, family dynamics etc., well, keep watching the show for those reasons.)

yeahhh no i get you 100%. there are so many things that diehard d*xtons say that......just rub me the wrong way and feel very gross lmfao. i don't really go out looking for their posts but every now and then i'll come across something in the nhie tag that is just. either braindead or straight up wrong or they just sound like a straight up asshole. and like to be fair i'll be the first to admit i'm not entirely an innocent party bc i have posted my fair share of mean things before but like!!!! idk the difference i see with a lot of benvi shippers vs d*xton shippers is like.....a lot of us genuinely like paxton as a character, even love him, and we love the arc he's had!!! not to be all "blah blah media literacy blah blah" but we don't willfully misinterpret his actions in the show, especially his negative actions, as being "abusive" or "toxic" or whatever just because he reacted like a normal teenager would. we don't hate on the actor for his looks - the only comment on his appearance i'll make is that he is visibly much older than maitreyi - because he is older, and i definitely think they should have cast a younger actor to play paxton, but that's not a dig at darren's appearance bc he's still very much conventionally attractive, it's just that he's, well, 32 as opposed to maitreyi's 21 and jaren's 22.

also like, they act as if jaren isn't attractive which confuses me so much? i may not be into men as a whole but even i can see that he's also a conventionally attractive guy. hot, cute, sexy, whatever you wanna say - he is all of those things! and so is darren! i don't care if you're trying to "defend your ship" or whatever (a ship that has effectively sunk at least as of 3x10 and, if we're being honest, earlier than that), you leave people's appearances out of it lol.

i think d*xton was cute, when they were together. i think they were a sweet short-term high school relationship. i think devi needed to explore that relationship with him in order to let herself fully move past that fantasy she had. i don't hate the ship itself - i just really very strongly dislike a majority of its shippers, for many many many reasons, the ben and jaren bashing just being one of them

Found this in my notes app. I think I responded to someone on Reddit with this a long time ago but it made me kinda emo all over again so here ya go.

It became really clear to me early on in s1 that the show was intentionally using the same language for Mohan and Ben (both calling Devi a firecracker) as well as telling her she deserves better (Mohan in her dreams and Ben in the bathroom).

But nhie also tells us that Ben and Nalini are similar. In 2x02, Nalini visits her parents as they were supposed to go look for apartments (bc they were supposed to move to India) and her mom totally blows her off for some wedding. Nalini doesn't even seem surprised and we are led to believe that her parents kind of neglected her as well. It's the reason why Nalini was touched by Ben crying in her office in s1 - she understood.

It's genius writing really! It tells us really subtly that these three people that are so good for Devi, that impact her life more than the other characters share many qualities - they are compassionate, understanding and push her to do better and love herself more. The whole journey of the show is Devi remembering her father's words and this time (season 3) truly seeing and believing them. It's why she improves so much. The core message is to surround yourself with people that make you feel like being you is enough. And that is why I will personally sob uncontrollably when it ends. It's a simple premise but so needed for every young person to be reminded of.

Honestly at this point ,I applaud Devi X Paxton shippers for their enthusiasm.

I'd take Devi calling him a dream,looking at Ben while Paxton was right there , and McEnroe noting that Devi isn't getting stomach knots anymore eventhough he thanked her in front of everyone. Plus the whole character of Des serving as her moving on from Paxton and her liking him cementing she fell for someone else, her not having any reaction to him caressing her face 2 EPs pre finale and her being unsure of sleeping with Paxton but her choosing to sleep with Ben instead (though they aren't even dating) as a clear sign of my ship sinking but you know...
