Bracket C Round 1
Poll 2
Hellion (@transjackkennedy) vs. Jindřiška Kovářová (@mist-the-wannabe-linguist)
131. Hellion (@transjackkennedy)
he/it/xe/rot
hellion is like really pathetic and toxic. he hit someone in the head with a rock and gave them amnesia because he was gay for them. hes canonically queer. he's a town mystery. he's the aromantic agender disabled rep no one wants. he walks out without paying his diner bills. he just took someone's house and left them to die in the woods and NO ONE noticed. he collects playing cards and pool balls. he's just some guy but if you made that guy terribly bad at understanding his emotions and let him nearly kill someone. he commits tax fraud and is the worst person in town, but at least he respects women. not enough to pay his DINER BILLS for them though. fucking asshole.
hellion is a pale humanoid with a horned sheep skull for a head. xe has a red sweater, tan pants, and a long brown coat. xe also has a stereotypical devil tail with a spade tip.
132. Jindřiška Kovářová (@mist-the-wannabe-linguist)
she/her
Jindřiška, or Jindra for short, is the daughter of the village blacksmith from a small village in Southern Moravia in the 1830s. She and her many siblings grew up around the forge and all were trained in the blacksmiths' art from a young age and Jindra is particularly proud of their trade. But though she loves her home, she longs to get out into the world as a true apprentice like her brothers, and she gets that chance when two rather odd travellers stop by to have their weapons repaired. Monster hunters, they say. Sure, why not - she directs them to a local tormented ghost, and after they help the unfortunate soul find peace and prepare to move on, she decides to join, captured by the promise of adventure. Jindra becomes an invaluable member of the team, as the two are foreigners unfamiliar with local folkloric beasts and human customs alike, she becomes their guide, translator, weapons repairer, and of course a fellow hunter. Things become temporarily a bit complicated on the revelation that one of her new friends is really a vampire and the main reason of their travels is the hope of somehow breaking his curse, but soon enough all three grow to be inseparable companions willing to give their life (if immortality allows) for each other.
A blacksmith by heart and soul, her skill is not limited to the forge and like many other persons of her trade as far as history remembers, Jindra is able to use certain simple spells and hexes, though if anyone asked her, she would deny doing any magic. To her, it's just ""something her da taught her.""
Jindra is almost never seen without her gigantic draft horse Saffron, she loves dance, resorts to making flower crowns whenever she needs to keep her hands occupied and there is no hammer and anvil in sight, has an ever growing collection of colorful ribbons, and as a Catholic, her typical method of facing dangers of the supernatural kind is such - first try the cross, then try the crossbow. She fears few things, but there is one being that is always sure to send chills down her spine. Ever since the tragic loss of a younger sibling, you never find her out in the fields at noon, as she does not want to risk coming face to face again with the one who people call Polednice.
A rather short and strongly built woman with a round face covered with freckles and a long braid of red hair. Typically wears a traditional dress, a way to show where she comes from and to remind her of her home no matter how far she goes. Always wears a little silver cross on her neck, a gift from her grandmother when she was a baby. She considers it her main protective charm.

The book I had been most excited for (my favourite little book in the world!) took me the longest to read, and even longer to review. In the past The Magician's Nephew only took me a few hours, or sometimes a few days to read. This times it was weeks, because I just couldn't get myself to sit still with that wonderful little book and just read, and it was another few weeks, because I didn't have access to my computer, until I finally wrote my review, more than a month too late. Now.
The Magician's Nephew – or Das Wunder von Narnia, as I first got to know it – did not really start my love for Narnia. That happened a few years earlier, when the movie version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe came to the cinema, where eight year old me did not get to see it, but still caught up with the hype, getting an Aslan (the last on they had!) and a Susan in a Happy Meal, and a Tumnus figure that would turn all grey when you put him in the freezer from a box of Kellogg's. 'Twas the good old time, when the way of advertisements and extras had a truly enchanting effect on children. It sure had on me, and with all that was going on, I got, rather than to see the movie in the cinema, the audiobook version of the book and a dvd of the BBC version of Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
Thus, my first, slight love for Narnia began, and a few years later I got a dvd of  The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, causing my feelings to stir up again, and even later, I decided I should read the books. I had read a few pages of one of them before, a rather old-fashioned German translation of from a school library (I think it was Dawn Treader) and, as mentioned before, listened to the audiobook version of Wardrobe, which I then considered more of an audio companion to the movie that I hadn't gotten to see then, four or five years before actually starting to read the books.
Not starting with what I thought would be the first book – the famous one, the one with the big movie – but another one. It had a lovely green cover, and it was about some sort of wonder or miracle, as the title suggested, and when I started reading (during a thunderstorm, in a car) I was as enchanted as I could be. From my previous encounters with Narnia during the years, I was quite a familiar with some of the characters, and figured quite early who some of them were, and what some of it turned out to be. But all in all, I was new to the world, and for the first time I was truly travelling to Narnia, seeing how it all began.
Before then, I had enjoyed reading. Quite a lot actually, there was never a time I didn't enjoy it. But I wasn't used to that sort of books. I mean, I was about twelve or so, when I first read Narnia, and in no way familiar with the old classics of children's literature. The books I had read were more specific to my interests, and the styles were usually rather straight forward, getting the story across, telling what happened. And then there was Narnia, and all that I thought prose had to be, turned out to be not like that at all – the writer used brackets and the word “and” instead of a comma when listing things, and most amazingly of all, he addressed the reader. After years of bullying in school, and just freed of public school for a much too short time (drat system!) I was a bit lonely, and there I was reading a book, but instead of having a sort of movie shown through words, there was this nice invisible man telling a story to me, and I cannot tell you how much I need that back then, how much I need it still. I loved this book immediately – and the others, too, but that one in particular. They are still, roughly a decade and many books later, my favourite series of books, and the The Magician's Nephew is my favourite of them all.
It's not the book's fault that it took me so long. In fact, I think my admiration and affection for it that caused me to read it more often than the others, and that stirred up my excitement so much, helped my lack of concentration and inability to sit still, especially with so much going on around me. Until I had nothing else to do but sit still, in a rather frightful situation (that, by now, turned out quite well) and continued to read, and finally came home.
How lovely can prose be? How funny and tearful, how sweet and how playfully deep? I don't know, but I still admire this book as much as I used to. The Creation of Narnia, and the whole business with the Neevil – different in tone as they might be – were always my favourite parts of the book and I loved them as much as ever. For some strange reason, my memory of the Garden and the Apple was the foggiest and I admired the scene as it slowly came back to me, while reading it. And I still love the Toffee Tree, and think of it a lot, and have to thank it, as it is, for a very good thing that I probably wouldn't have without it, at least not the way it turned out to be. So thank you, Toffee Tree. I am glad to have returned to you at last.
It was amazing to see Frank (and Helen, too, but we got see more of Frank after all) the way he was, and how early, actually, the traits that made this unlikely man worthy of a King came to show. He is an amazing character in his own right – they both are! – and I love their little part of the story. Little? I dare say, they are a great part of the story, though not of the story we get to read.
It's Digory's story, Digory and Polly's, and it's a good story, a story that touches the subjects of of choice and of learning more than any of the other books. Or perhaps not more, perhaps just in a way that stuck with me in particular and it is wonderful to see old Professor Kirke as a boy, even as a crying, dirty-faced, frightened, moody, almost arrogant, and amazingly brave and noble boy. I love this boy, I love this man.
And Polly, I admire her. She's the most level-headed, practical and frank of all the children we read about in these books and I like that her whole attitude to the story, to the things that happen to her is so clearly different from all the others. And I love that she's a writer.
So I just returned to this, two days after beginning to write it. And what an emotional – not mess, but something! – I see. Oh my. Ah well. It's all true. And now, for the questions:
My favourite chapter is The Founding of Narnia, and itself is also my favourite scene. I am fond of all things related to the first jokes, and the neevil. And I love the Wood Between the Worlds and the things that take place in it, but in the end it's the Creation of the World we love so much that truly matters most to me. But a close second is The End of this Story and the Beginning of all of the Others, in particular the story of the Wardrobe's origin.
My favourite character always used to be Digory, and I think he still is. Yes, he is.
In different ways, my favourite quotes are “Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.” and “Far overhead from beyond the veil of blue sky which hid them the stars sang again; a pure, cold, difficult music. Then there came a swift flash like fire (but it burnt nobody) either from the sky or from the Lion itself, and every drop of blood tingled in the children's bodies, and the deepest, wildest voice they had ever heard was saying: ‘Narnia, Narnia, Narnia, awake. Love. Think. Speak. Be walking trees. Be talking beasts. Be divine waters.’”
I love this book like no other, so I shall award it with the five brightest stars in the Narnian sky.
And now I will read The Last Battle. I didn't want to before writing this.

APA Meta Monday - Take Me to Church
The companion guides note that Downton was made to be more secular than what was probably accurate for the time period. No character is made devout, we see no sermons, and no one says grace before a meal.
S2E5 is one of the few times we are in a church outside of a wedding. The episode was supposed to have more discussion on religion than that one scene, including deleted lines from Anna asking John to go with her to say a prayer for William and Matthew (bracketed line is in the final version; pg. 254 of the S2 script book):
ANNA: [Because I'd like to say a prayer for them. For both of them.] I know you don't believe in any of it - BATES: You're quite wrong. Since I met you, I believe in everything.
I don’t think that this means that John is suddenly religious for her sake, but rather she has allowed him to believe in something, since meeting and falling in love with her. What he believes in, is her.
I won’t get too much into the other deleted lines in the church scene, because I feel that certain edits really were made with purpose and thus are no longer canon anyway. Fellowes did want to get into the “philosophical difference” (pg. 258) between the two, however, he doesn’t mean in the way of morals, but rather that she was bringing “the belief in something more” into John’s life and that it wasn’t “religion in the traditional sense.” That I agree with, but I don’t see that really as a contrast between Christianity and atheism (Fellowes does state in the script book here that Bates is an atheist), and that’s why I am fine with some of the exclusions here for that reason as well.
Anna and John reference religion in their dialogue again in S3. John tells Murray about Sybil’s death, “Lovely young woman at the height of her happiness. If I had any beliefs, that would shake them.” Anna says, “I don’t like discussing religion. We’ll only fall out,” when the servants talk the differences between the Anglican and Catholic churches in S3E6, which really is the only topic on the subject in general throughout the show. Perhaps this is why we never hear her discuss it again, with her husband or otherwise.
The “belief of something more” I think is what we get in the latter series instead of something traditional. Anna never has a line stating that she thinks that it’s God punishing her or them. Her line in S5E1 about them having a child being in “God’s hands” seemed more to be a turn of phrase about being up to fate in general (i.e. it will happen when it happens), and she’s never shown praying for well, anything, after S2E5. Not John’s fate in S2CS, for a child in S5-6, etc. The companion books might refer to her as a “Christian woman,” but I feel that is more equating that her moral code, and being a good and kind person.
Perhaps this was to keep DA secular, or perhaps... Anna herself has doubts after all that happened to her. We are never told why John is atheist, but we can assume it had to do with his experience in the Boer War. What I feel though, is that both Anna and John’s belief of something more really is the belief in each other and the faith in their love. Anna had indeed brought love back into John’s life, and teaching him that there was more to life, and it’s their strong, incredible bond that they both believe in.
The church scene in S2E5 also provides one of my favorite Anna lines, which really resonates for me: “I’d rather have the right man than the right wedding.” But really, it was the right wedding for them. What really does make a right wedding? Marrying the person you love.

Female veterinarians say gender disparity remains an uphill battle
Colleen Kottke
This is the fourth in a four-part series, “On Call: Vets Under Stress”, that explores the pressures and overwhelming challenges facing those who choose a career in providing care for our animals.
In 2009, the American Veterinary Medical Association reported that female veterinarians outnumbered their male counterparts for the first time. While they make up more than half of the veterinarians in the industry today, a culture of masculinity still exists.
According to a study conducted by Lancaster University Management School and Open University Business School, female practitioners say gender discrimination remains an uphill battle.
“Many of the women we spoke to, especially those in their early career, reported experiences of clients – or even in their own practices – treating them as having limited competence and credibility..." co-author Professor David Knights of Lancaster University said.
Al Martens who has worked in a large animal practice in eastern Wisconsin for 43 years said many women starting out in the field with him faced many challenges.
"Women have really had a tough road. They had to be pioneers, in that they had to prove themselves more than the men," Martens said.
In areas of the state considered agriculturally dense, Martens says its common to have large animal practices staffed with more than one female veterinarian.
"If you get up in the rural areas where there's not a lot of farms, there may be a lot of farmers that haven't experienced a female veterinarian," he said.
Pulling their weight
Meg Mueller was fortunate that after graduating from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in 2010, she returned to western Wisconsin where many of her clients already knew her.
But as the "new" vet at Osseo-Augusta Veterinary Clinic, she still had to make the grade out in the field.
"The tough part is you need to prove that you're going to be a good doctor. But you shouldn't have that connotation behind it that you're a 'female' and you have to work that much harder," Mueller says. "Thankfully my co-worker Dr. Linda Giese who has been practicing for over 20 years went through those trenches of gender disparity so that those of us that came after haven't had to fight as hard. But it's still out there."
Today three of the four veterinarians that staff Mueller's mixed animal practice are women.
Mueller says one of the biggest challenges that females face in large animal practices is the issue of working with very strong and powerful patients in - much of the time - nonclinical, less than ideal settings. And client's perception that they 'can't handle the job'.
"It's a very physically demanding job with some risk involved and some of those issues can come to light in those situations," Mueller said. "But sometimes you have to figure out what your strengths are both physical and mentally and be able to take those tasks at hand."
Gender discrimination
Although gender doesn't play a role in how well a veterinarian performs a surgery on a DA (twisted stomach) or diagnoses hypocalcemia, if left unchecked, it can factor how a client interacts or trusts the opinion of the veterinarian.
One female veterinarian told Lancaster University researchers that a client demanded a male veterinarian come out to her farm because the woman was unhappy with the treatment that the female veterinarian had delivered – even though the male vet did the same thing.
Veterinarian Katie Mrdutt says that while farmers in her clinic's territory up in northwest Wisconsin had already been exposed to female veterinarians, she sensed the hesitancy when she arrived on the farm of a new client.
"My favorite part of those experiences was showing how I could use my brain to tackle challenges that maybe the client thought only could be done with brawn," Mrdutt said. "One particular client had a beef cow having difficulty calving. He had been working on her for a few hours before he called me and had not been making any progress."
Within 10 minutes of her arrival the calf was on the ground and alive.
"He was shocked at how quickly I fixed the problem, and probably more so because I was 8 months pregnant at the time," said Mrdutt.
Dual roles
Among the 75 veterinarians interviewed in the Lancaster University study, many felt that women practitioners were automatically presumed to be potential mothers, a perception that could be viewed as problematic for long-term careers.
One female equine veterinary professional told dvm360, a veterinary media organization, that during her interview to get into veterinary school, she was asked how long she planned to practice before starting a family. An older veterinarian intimated to her that it wasn't worth her time to invest her time and money in veterinarian school because she would eventually leave the profession in order to have a family.
Many veterinarians like Mrdutt and Stacey Adams, who is the sole practitioner and owner of her Lake Geneva area practice, have found a way to balance the demands of motherhood and a taxing career. Mrdutt left private practice after three years to join a non-profit that focuses on responsible drug use education among farmers and veterinarians.
Adams, who runs a small beef operation at home and is the mother of two children under 4, including one with special needs, says over the past 12 years she has learned to set boundaries between her personal and work life. This includes reserving after hours and weekend calls for emergencies only.
"If this costs me a potential client, then they probably weren't a client I wanted in the first place," Adams said. "Some clients want to say that I only feel that way because I'm a woman, but I say it is because I value my family and my health."
Surprisingly the clients that have been most judgmental about her boundaries and family needs have been women. She recalls a time when her special needs son then 2, had to be admitted to a hospital 95 miles from their home for a severe respiratory infection.
During this health crisis, Adams received a call from a non-client who had a sick goat. Adams relayed she was unavailable and supplied the woman with two other clinics to call.
"She had the audacity to tell me that she had never had a veterinarian put a child before an animal and that I needed to re-evaluate my career choice if I felt my child was more important than her goat," Adams said. "I told her that any veterinarian can take care of her goat but only I can hold my son and comfort him when he is crying for his momma in the hospital."
Mrdutt says most farmers were welcoming when on more than one occasion she had to bring her child along on calls.
"Usually the farmer had more fun with him and forgot about assisting me," she laughed. "The beauty of working with some clients is that they get to know you and understand the challenges we face, especially balancing the demands of afterhours care."
Afterhours calls to an unfamiliar farm late at night may put a lone female veterinarian in a vulnerable situation. While Mueller has been fortunate to have a good working relationship with her clientele, some of her friends haven't been so lucky.
"I have classmates that have been in some pretty bad situations. No one deserves to go to work and be put in a position like that," Mueller said. "And it's hard because we're out on the road by ourselves, and then there's the call in the middle of the night for that client that you don't really know. That can be daunting."
Bridget Heilsberg, equine veterinarian, owner of Crown 3 Veterinary Services in Whitesboro, Texas, and president of the Women's Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative told dvm360 that safety on farm calls is a regular discussion for the women in a Facebook group she's part of.
Solutions range from traveling with a canine companion to calling friends, coworkers or loved ones before visiting a new client—even to carrying a firearm for protection.
"I personally not only have a firearm but I also have a German shepherd, and I travel with her to my farm calls," Heilsberg says. "I feel like it's an additional concern that women have because we have that concern in our everyday lives. Then it gets amplified when we go out on a farm call visit with someone we don't know."
A ways to go
Mueller says it's important for a veterinarian's colleagues and their clients to respect their need to find a healthy work-life balance.
"I think in the profession it still comes down to a respect factor if a woman chooses to both work and have a family or needs to pull back and not work as much," she said. "I'd like to think that we've come a long way, but we still have a long way to go in addressing those gender disparities across the industry, whether that be pay or the respect factor."
A study from Cornell University researchers that surveyed 2,760 veterinarians discovered a pronounced wage gap between male and female veterinarians, especially among recent graduates and top-earning practitioners.
The study, published in the March 15 issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, found that among the top quarter of earners, men were paid about $100,000 a year more.
While reasons for the wage gap were not identified, researchers noted that factors could include unconscious bias, size and type of practice and societal expectations.
Their analysis showed that type of ownership was instrumental in earnings. Partnerships were believed to be more beneficial for womens' income earning potential than sole proprietorships, while any form of ownership benefits men’s incomes. When it comes to the number of years worked, the study found that men move into higher income brackets at lower levels of experience than women.
Martens says female veterinarians on staff at Waupun Veterinary Service pull their weight the same as their male counterparts. He says that veterinarians - regardless of gender - that display a good attitude, strong work ethic and contribute to the practice are rewarded.
"This culture goes back to the guy that hired me. We try to make everyone a partner to make it economically feasible," he said.
Know your worth
Mrdutt says gender disparity and crushing student debt load, added to the strain on mental health from long hours and demanding clients and compassion fatigue, makes veterinarian medicine a hard profession for women to work in some days.
"I had my mind set on being a veterinarian since I could walk and talk, and I do love a challenge," Mrdutt said. "I'd tell any young woman considering this profession to know their worth. Know what you want and don't want, and that it's ok to take care of you first. Finally, know that you are more than capable."
Adams says she has never let being a woman hold her back in her profession.
"I have always been of the opinion that if you do your job and you do it well, people will respect you for it," she said. "Those who don't are people that you don't want for clients anyway. Those are the people who are going to take advantage of you and will never be happy no matter how much you do for them."

Startup Idea - ‘2Cation’

## Startup Idea ## ‘2Cation’ ## REF: 1 https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/FCXCXigp7byv2dM8D/how-to-make-billions-of-dollars-reducing-loneliness      2) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20847752      3) https://www.dropbox.com/sh/a89qnbm9tsr0hf6/AAC-VxKRjH76D_K94We7YQUka?dl=0 ## 1st September 2019, 1900
People are making friends from all kind of online sources, but still, loneliness is currently the biggest disease afflicting the planet. Why? The current system of algorithmic daing or friend-making is not working apparently.
** What happens if people are matched according to their interests, they are brought together in a light-familiar-easy place like Goa and then they stay together and do a set of activities together?
What we can call it as as '2Cation'. 2 random people come together, stay together and become friends.
** What current dating apps and systems lack is that all the interactions are ephemeral and they do not result into anything concrete, which leads to heartburn and disappointment, then people try harder and it gets into a vicious cycle. The problem is that to find new companions or friends, who could be potential cure to LONELINESS, nothing new has been tried out.
** Unless people stay together and do some activity together, it is not possible to know each other through a series of texts and posts, which could be often dressed up for impacts. But when is in front of each other, literally 24x7, then faking for how long? It is so easy to fake on dating apps!
** THis could be like REALITY DATING, minus all the buzz and glitz of media.
** Bring people to serene locations like Goa, (where they are excited to go and spend some time, during the off-season, to avail the cheap rentals). People are also relatively free during such 'off-season' times.
** TWIST: While matching the people together; we ask people what kind of people they are and then match them with people having diverse tastes and NOT similar tastes.
** People are grouped according to their age brackets, and activities are designed according to it.

Bruce, Donald Roger.  (1977).  The Early Career of Sepp Dietrich: 28 May 1892 – 1 September 1939.  Tempe, Arizona: Arizona State University. Master’s Thesis.  Pages: iv + 151. [Me].
ABSTRACT
This biography examines the early career of SS (Schutzstaffel or Guard Detachment) General Sepp Dietrich between his birth on 28 May 1892 and the invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939. The major emphasis Is on the decade between Dietrich's admission into the SS, which evolved Into
the Nazis’ multifunctional Elite Corps, in May 1928 and the occupation of Austria In March 1938.
Particular attention Is devoted to Dietrich's role in the Ernst Röhm affair of 30 June 1934, when he oversaw the execution of six high-ranking SA (Sturmabteilung or Storm Troop) leaders of the Nazis’ brown-shirted militia. His humble peasant birth and youth, his seven years in the Imperial Army and in World War I, and his postwar years of indecision and as a Nazi fellow traveler are examined in detail.
Dietrich’s rapid promotions from SS private to SS general in less than four years, his successive appointments as Adolf Hitler's personal bodyguard, and as head of the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (SS Bodyguard Regiment Adolf Hitler) are followed by four years of parades, overseeing the protection of the Führer, and preparations for war. The bloodless seizures of Austria and Czechoslovakia, and mobilizatlon for the invasion of Poland complete his early career. His abilities as an SS general and the many legends surrounding his person will also be investigated. (amazon.com).

Choc, Wes.  (15 Jun 2015).  Just Dust: An Improbable Marine's Vietnam Story. Wheatmark. Pages: 234. [My brother’s friend].
From San Diego to Da Nang, from Hill 55 to Khe Sanh, followed by perplexing prospects in Washington, DC, this is a unique sojourn about a few bizarre events, introspections, and serendipitous choices encountered by a skeptical, eye-squinting Marine. Just Dust: An Improbable Marine's Vietnam Story is the first-person account of a reluctant serviceman. It is the story of how a young man, unprepared to make meaningful decisions, decides to join the US Marine Corps in 1965. Skinny, tall, and a self-proclaimed "wimp," Wes Choc sweats through boot camp, isolating himself and not making many friends. He is so different that only leftover boots from WWII fit his oddly-sized feet. Posted to two historically significant places -- Hill 55 and Khe Sanh -- the author details his time in Vietnam, including jobs examining personal effects of those killed in action to finally returning home to unimagined pursuits in Washington, DC. Despite being at the forefront of the Vietnam War, the author does not tell the typical war story. Evaluative and observational, Just Dust is more journal than history, more about trying to fit in than being admired. This pensive narrative from a contemplative skeptic poses questions that many will identify with from their own parallel journeys. What core values nurtured by the military process also offer important life lessons? Are unconventional abilities in experience or attitude things that make one more worthy as a person or less worthy a Marine? What was gained from the Vietnam experience that mattered the most? In the end, the author's meditations lead him to understand what Semper fi means to him. (amazon.com).
Greenly, Larry W. (1 Sep 2016). Eugene Bullard: World's First Black Fighter Pilot. NewSouth Books. YA-ages 7-12. [Creative Writing class teacher].
Pioneering black aviator Eugene Bullard, descended from slaves, became the world’s first black fighter pilot, though he was barred from serving the United States because of the color of his skin.
Growing up in Georgia, Bullard faced discrimination and the threat of lynching. He ran away from home at twelve and eventually made his way to France, where he joined the French Foreign Legion and later the Lafayette Flying Corps. He saw fierce combat during World War I and was wounded multiple times. He returned to the United States with a chest full of medals, but once again faced discrimination. Bullard was all but ignored in the United States, even as, at age sixty-four in 1959, he was made a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor. Eugene Bullard’s is a remarkable story of accomplishment despite racial prejudice. Author Larry Greenly’s biography includes numerous historical photographs of Bullard throughout his travels.
Greenly, Larry W.
In writing class he told us he wrote a novel about WWI, but I can’.t find it on amazon or ebay.
Haynes, Evelyn Harriet Jenne.  (1996). The Oral History of Evelyn Harriet Jenne Haynes. Self published spiral book. Pages: ? No Introduction. [Cousin].
PREFACE.
Evelyn Harriet Jenne was born November 21, 1912 in Richford, Vermont. She was the oldest of three children born to Margaret L. Chamberlain* (1885—1929) and Frank Llewelyn Jenne (1887—1918) .
The other siblings were her brothers Frank Llewelyn and James Gilbert. And in 1926 her mother Margaret gave birth to Mildred Jenne.
In her oral history Evelyn recalls her family, childhood years, life in South Boston, memories of her neighborhood friends, marriage to Clifford Elwood Haynes, work during the Great Depression, and her favorite pastimes: singing, dancing, nurturing plants, and caring for animals. Evelyn lived most of her married life at 140 Island Street in Stoughton, Massachusetts, about 20 miles directly south of Boston.
The taped interviews were conducted by Judith A. (StarØish) Haynes on January 14, January 29, and February 25, 1996, in Evelyn's present home at 103 Peter Road, Plymouth, Massachusetts. Judy also completed transcribing and word processing of the taped interviews, and the initial editing of the oral history. With both Evelyn's and Judith's permission, son Bob Haynes further edited this oral history by inserting phrases of clarification [within brackets] and by rearranging and compiling some of his mother's recollections so that "bits and pieces" of a single memory were not dispersed throughout this document. Bob also scanned his mother's collection of family photographs and he selected those that are included in this memoir. Many of the oldest photographs were reproduced through computer enhancement at a professional studio to eliminate lack of contrast from the so—called "yellowing" effect. The captions that accompany the photographs in this memoir were written by Bob as well.

Liddell, Judith, and Barbara Hussey.  (12 Oct 2011).  Birding Hot Spots of Central New Mexico. (W. L. Moody Jr. Natural History Series). [Fellow birder].
From pine forest to desert scrub, from alpine meadow to riparian wetland, Albuquerque and its surrounding area in New Mexico offer an appealing variety of wildlife habitat. Birders are likely to see more than two hundred species during a typical year of bird-watching. Now, two experienced birders, Judith Liddell and Barbara Hussey, share their intimate knowledge of the best places to find birds in and around this important region.
Covering the Rio Grande corridor, the Sandia and Manzano Mountains, Petroglyph National Monument, and the preserved areas and wetlands south of Albuquerque (including crane and waterfowl haven Bosque del Apache), Birding Hotspots of Central New Mexico offers twenty-nine geographically organized site descriptions, including maps and photographs, trail diagrams, and images of some of the birds and scenery birders will enjoy. Along with a general description of each area, the authors list target birds; explain where and when to look for them; give driving directions; provide information about public transportation, parking, fees, restrooms, food, and lodging; and give tips on availability of water and picnic facilities and on the presence of hazards such as rattlesnakes, bears, and poison ivy.
The book includes a “helpful information” section that discusses weather, altitude, safety, transportation, and other local birding resources. The American Birding Association’s code of birding ethics appears in the back of the book, along with an annotated checklist of 222 bird species seen with some regularity in and around Albuquerque.

Following the same format as their book on the Albuquerque area, the authors describe 32 sites organized by geographic regions. Along with a general description of each area, the authors list target birds; explain where and when to look for them; give driving directions; provide information about public transportation, parking, fees, restrooms, food, and lodging; and give tips on availability of water and picnic facilities and on the presence of hazards such as poison ivy, rattlesnakes, and bears. Maps and photographs provide trail diagrams and images of some of the target birds and their environments.
