Do you know what I’ve noticed about Captain Pike that I absolutely love that most other captains don’t tend to do?
He has absolutely NO chill, at all, about seeing people get hurt (unless there’s something else extremely pressing going on). Like no letting medical handle it, no somebody else go running after them first. Just, NYOOM!
I mean SERIOUSLY
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The guy should’ve been an EMT! He keeps B-lining it to injured people before anybody else can get there and he’s Very Stressed About It.
Full on protective dad mode every time! And Pike can get his ass kicked and be like ‘I’m totally fine pay no attention to my very bruised up face it’s fiiiiiine’ no it’s not my guy!
The budding PikeUna shipper in me kinda wishes he’d been there when Una got her shit rocked in Memento Mori, she probably wouldn’t have almost bled out in sickbay because she’s worse than he is lmao!
Anyway, as if I needed even more reasons to be madly in love with this guy! Good lord…

not to rag on disco even more but one thing i like about snw is that the episodes are FUN and the actors are HAVING FUN. disco is like "we put 10 actors in a pit and told them to cry at each other for four hours" and snw is like "we let the actors dress in silly costumes and pretend to be wizards :-)"

i feel like i unlocked a thought
i joined a random discord that had such a wildly straight vibe that i was shocked that a chunk of the people were bisexuals. they didn’t give a shit about any of the community stuff. they felt straight. they acted straight. they got onto me for not joining in on convos about men. they were really weird when i talked about liking women.
i was like ah. i understand. the fabled bisexuals everyone complains about being too straight are just assimilationists, just like the gay assimilationists i also can’t stand. that’s what everyone is secretly complaining about.
they’re being biphobic by specifically assuming assimilationism of bi people, inherently, which i was aware of being a thing, but it’s funny to understand in action.
like oh this shit is why some lesbians complain about needing a lesbian only space, bc they think all bisexuals are like this. creepy lol

I do have a bad habit of buying games and never playing them but it feels especially bad when I buy games on steam. It’s bad enough that I bought Stardew Valley on steam and then later bought it again on switch cuz I knew I’d be more likely to play it if it was on my switch lmao

so, talking about mayakovsky's influence on disco elysium. to me the most obvious parallel (and my favourite one) between his poems and disco elysium is probably usage of stars imagery.
elysian communard writes: "in dark times, should the stars also go out?" and i think, famous revolutionary poet mayakovsky asks a very similar question in his poem "listen!" ("послушайте!"). there are different translations, but my favourite is probably this one:
Listen, if stars are lit it means -- there is someone who needs it. It means -- someone wants them to be, that someone deems those specks of spit magnificent. And overwrought, in the swirls of afternoon dust, he bursts in on God, afraid he might be already late. In tears, he kisses God's sinewy hand and begs him to guarantee that there will definitely be a star. He swears he won't be able to stand that starless ordeal. Later, He wanders around, worried, but outwardly calm. And to everyone else, he says: 'Now, it's all right. You are no longer afraid, are you?' Listen, if stars are lit, it means -- there is someone who needs it. It means it is essential that every evening at least one star should ascend over the crest of the building.
stars are something that makes it possible to keep living ('he won't be able to stand that starless ordeal'), they are something that makes the world around less terrifying ('now, it's alright. you are no longer afraid, are you?'). stars are something that makes life meaningful despite the darkness around. so it is essential that stars are still on the night sky, and this is the answer to the question asked by elysian communard.
stars in mayakovsky's poem can mean different things: art, love, hope, beauty of the world around. in any case, he uses stars to describe something that helps us keep going, just like disco elysium does.

I typed out a four paragraph anonymous message and then Tumblr crashed (T⌓T)
Anyway: saw another de role swap post, went to your blog to find solace, and remembered I’ve been meaning to send this to you because your blog is my go-to scroll when something in the de fandom annoys me.
I can’t believe some people don’t realise the reason Kim was a juvenile officer for 15 years was because of racism? The pinball thing makes it clear that at least some of Kim’s duties in juvie were undercover related, and Measurehead thrice (once while explicitly referencing phrenology) refers to Kim as ‘paedomorphic’. Kim was going undercover as a teenager or so at 38! This was 5 years ago, he probably already had some grey hairs! I feel like It’s pretty clear that this is due to a racialised stereotype of Seolites (read: East Asians) as ‘innocent’ and ‘childlike’. Disco Elysium is pretty clear on how racism goes beyond “I don’t like this person because they aren’t white,” like how Seolite people are specifically seen as ‘mystical’ or ‘shifty’, or how using Semenese culture and slurs is seen as ‘cool’, while Semenese people are seen as ‘aggressive’, and’ responsible for most crime’ (along with Mesque people).
Now that I think about it, the lack of analysis in the fandom of how Disco Elysium purposely presents racism, and different ‘types’ of racism, is probably one of the main reasons for the de role swap au and other Disco Elysian fan content that completely ignore how racism effects Kim’s character.
AH I’m so sorry about the crash, thank you for sharing this is all spot on 👏
and yeah Kim has been explicitly racially infantilized with his juvie roll and on top of that iirc the pinball machines themselves come from Seol so there’s another layer of in-universe racial stereotype at play here in the pinball case. (not unlike the premise of like, having an East Asian man go undercover as a gamer.)
and the fact that Kim can’t get out of its shadow is even worse for him. the fact that Harry can even remember Kimball Kitsuragi after forgetting everything else has to be especially painful for him. Kim despises the pinball case, that it happened and that it’s how he finally got out of juvie in his late 30s. and that for the other officers of the RCM- it’s an amusing joke
Kim isn’t someone who is characterized as having a wild rebellious streak in the past. It’s kind of the exact opposite. He’s clearly a Dolorian- the way he talks about how they’re Dolorian by default because the laws they uphold are Dolorian etc is painfully familiar and even the Volta he practices has Dolorian roots, he's a former moralist. i agree with fandom interpretation that he probably grew up in Coalition run orphanage as well. strong Dolorian upbringing, what you’d expect from a real life Christian orphanage funded by the government
He smoked weed like three times in his 20s and actively gets hurt feelings if Harry laughs it off because that one bit of rebellion is really important to his self image, like…I think it’s pretty clear that Kim didn’t have a substantial bad boy phase.

So given that I know that 'disco' means 'learn' I was wondering what 'elysium' meant, as I wanted to know what they were learning.
It's Greek turned Latin, the fields of elysian, the place that like blessed people go after they die, into Latin it went elysian -> Elysium and in Latin it meant any place that brought, or a state of, bliss or delight
So, in summary, 'learn though delight' :)

Things about Disco Elysian from my play through
- I was killed from sitting in a plastic chair for too long
- I got an achievement for saying sorry too much
- I got an ability where I earned 50 cents every time I though about communism
- I save scummed to jump over a wall, cause the only other way I could find to get past was to become racist

i need an outlet for the disco elysium evangelion/pacific rim mashup au or i’ll explode so imma just word vomit my ideas for it here
so instead of police, the RCM is an experimental mecha pilot program in Revachol under the Coalition of Nations. Revachol seems to have been the epicenter of attacks by the Halos, extra-elysian beings that scientists theorize as having some kind of connection to the encroaching Pale.
The RCM operate mechs known as Pale Divers (not sold on this name yet, but i just wanted a placeholder) with two types, the Innocentric line and the Plasm line (again some of the names are just placeholders). The Plasm line are older designs and a holdover from the Revolution when the communists built these particular mechs to harness the plasm’s power when multiple operators sync up in revolutionary union. They succeeded in engineering models that operate with two pilots in sync but their future plans for additional pilots failed when the Revolution fell and the first Halo attacked Revachol soon after, allowing for the Coalition to take over in the moment of crisis. With the Coalition in power and dealing with Halo attacks, they soon created the Innocentric line of mechs, which utilize only one pilot for maximum efficiency and the mechs rely on biological fusion with the pilot for optimal performance (ala how Evas work). However the RCM still finds use for the Plasm models as they’re more affordable to produce even though they’re perceived as less reliable to combat the Halo threats.
The RCM being an experimental program, it relied on volunteers who were willing to sacrifice their lives in order to become pilots. Harry volunteered, wanting to prove himself for Dora. He first operated an Innocentric model and quickly became a top pilot. However operating the mech took severe toll on his body as it’s heavily reliant on Harry’s biology to achieve optimal performance and Harry resorted to drugs and alcohol to sustain himself. Dora eventually left him as he sunk deeper deeper into dysfunction, which broke him and culminated in an event where he loses his memories (could be the same as the game, but i might try to rejig it to a different cause for his amnesia). His body has deteriorated to the point where he is completely unfit to operate the Innocentric model and thus was ‘downgraded’ to operating a Plasm model alongside Kim as his new partner. Homoerotic mecha training montage ensues.
