CVL : ‘Superdry’ Case Study

While looking at using language from Asian culture in western aesthetic, I came across ‘Superdry’ which have always been founded in the aesthetic of Japanese Style Streetwear. I was curious with how the brand went about doing this, how they became successful. I also wanted to investigate if there were issues along the way, being a UK founded brand, using Japanese visual touch points. 

Superdry was founded by Julian Dunkerton and James Holden in 2003. Julian was the main founder, and James the lead designer, having previously founded Bench. The company was founded in Cheltenham UK, with stores in 65 countries, but not Japan. 

Part of the key Brand Identity from it’s founding were the hand drawn lettering of ‘Superdry’ paired with the graphic elements of layering Japanese symbols. James Holden says he was inspired by having loved graphic novel work such as comics and manga, from Japanese culture having grown up with it. He was also inspired by the colours and neon qualities of Tokyo nightlife and street scenes, and wanted to incorporate this into the brand identity, visuals, packaging etc. 

When speaking about the influence Japanese culture had on his design direction he has stated 

'I could be looking at a bottle we picked up in Harajuku (a district of Shibuya, Tokyo) and I could be thinking, my God that wording is incredible: where can we link that on to a piece of branding on a jacket?'

When speaking about the language used on packaging in Tokyo, he speaks about the aesthetics of the lettering, and how he can use that, without consideration of what it means, past what to him may be simply a collection of graphic shapes. If he were to use that type he could end up with a top that says ‘freshly distilled water’ and would that matter if it looked cool and people bought it?

Interestingly his main key points for inspiration focus on Japanese lettering ‘Kanji’, and colours and aesthetics found in Tokyo capital, rather that cultural and historical elements of Japanese culture. It could be debated wether this is celebrating and bringing to attention Japanese culture in his design direction, or if he is stealing aesthetics for profit, without consideration for what they mean or where they come from. 

Superdry includes Japanese lettering on their brand identity, and many of their apparel itesm such as tops and bags. The lettering on the Super Dry logo doesn’t directly translate into Japanese language, but people guess it was meant to say ‘Superdry’ in Japanese but theories suggest it most closely translates to ‘Dry it’ and ‘Maximum Dry’. Other slogans on tops read out ‘Car Lubrication’ ‘Extreme Petroleum’ and ‘Hard Weather Company’. Some sources and articles suggest this may be as parody, but Superdry has never suggested this, or translated any other sort of visual parody on their other aesthetics other than the Japanese writing. Most theories suggest that this is badly transcribed Japanese, with the sheer purpose of aesthetics. 

Discovery:

There is enough to suggests this may be cultural appropriation which may be let slide due to the company being founded in 2003, and people liking the style enough to not question it. Also due to the fact there are no stores in Japan, there may not be enough discourse to raise a debate over the companies ethics regarding the design direction. 

The idea of Language and lettering in regards to symbol languages such as Kanji and Hanzi is interesting me, as there are a fair amount of case studies where there are errors in translation, communication, and a lack of care for proper translation, in fashion from 2003 and 2023.

Dunkerton 要帶領Superdry 重回榮耀

2018年底Superdry發布獲利警訊，宣稱由於曖冬氣候，讓Superdry最倚重的秋冬服飾銷售不佳。公司將進行為期18個月的改造計畫，包括多角經營，進入童裝等新的銷售領域，降低對冬季服飾的依賴；還有削減5000萬英鎊成本，計畫之一包括總部裁員200人。

但Dunkerton質疑Superdry獲利不佳是以Euan Sutherland為首的經營階層決策錯誤所致。Sutherland自2015年起即接替Dunkerton擔任CEO職務，而Dunkerton認為競爭對手也同樣面臨曖冬問題，但表現比Superdry要好得多。

Dunkerton 說經營階層大幅削減店內及網站上的產品項目是銷售不佳的主因，而且他們改變了Dunkerton 長久奉行的不打折理念，反而一年52 周里有48 周在打折，造成聖誕節的旺季里庫存反而不足。因此Dunkerton 認為Superdry 極度乾燥應該重回以設計導向為基礎，重新聚焦在賴以成功的連帽衫及夾克上，並停止一年到頭的打折活動，且應大幅增加在網頁上的產品選項。

而為了挽救Superdry 官網，Dunkerton以最大股東的身分要求在2019年4月2日召開股東大會，讓他重回董事會。Dunkerton表示將會以2至3年的時間帶領Superdry重回榮耀，恢復每年二位數以上的獲利成長，並承諾個人持股至少在兩年內都不會賣出。

Dunkerton並聯合另一合夥創辦人Holder，推舉英國線上時尚零售集團Boohoo的董事長Peter Williams一起加入Superdry的董事會，以協助Dunkerton共同改革業務。

Superdry 外套的經營階層則立刻表達不歡迎Dunkerton回來公司的立場，並說當初Dunkerton就是負責監督秋冬系列產品，因此銷售不好是他的責任。但Dunkerton反駁說，他從2017年7月起，也就是離開公司之前的9個月里，即無法再過問任何產品的開發與設計過程了。

而時裝零售分析師Kate Hardcastle表示，無論誰應對Superdry秋冬系列的銷售結果負責，Superdry的品牌魅力都在衰退。廉價競爭對手以更少的價格，就能取代Superdry在客戶心中時尚趨勢的感覺。而以前會穿上Superdry的社交名流，現在則已轉向其他產品。更糟的是，Superdry有許多仿冒品，公司每年至少花費100萬英鎊用於處理仿冒者的訴訟，更遑論所造成的業務損失。

但Dunkerton和Superdry高層都不同意這些分析看法，他們認為Superdry仍有足夠能力重新獲得消費者青睞。Dunkerton的目標是說服其他股東相信他有能力扭轉公司局面，並讓他重回董事會，而這項舉動顯然已經奏效。

握有Superdry 10%股票的兩大基金」Investec」及」Schroders」都在3月29日宣布支持Dunkerton陣營，於是Dunkerton及Williams二人在4月2日的投票中，雙雙以51%贊成對上49%反對，順利當選Superdry的新董事。而現任的經營階層及董事們先前均已表示如果Dunkerton等人當選，則他們將會在稍後請辭，因此目前正等待Dunkerton等人前來交接。

至於消費者是否會在Dunkerton重回Superdry後，���次擁抱Superdry帶有日本文字的獨特設計風格？則有待Dunkerton回歸後，是否真的能如期端出令人驚艷的服飾才能分曉了。
