Aja Perera Makes Referee Debut

Aja Smith who was known as Aja Perera on the indie scene made her official NXT live event debut at last night’s NXT event in Ocala, Florida.

Smith, who was signed to a contract earlier this month is the first-ever official African American female referee in WWE history.

She made her referee debut refereeing a match between Shotzi Blackheart & Taynara Conti.

We exclusively broke the news of her signing and the news of her receiving a WWE tryout back in December of last year at the WWE Performance Center.

She formerly held the SHINE Tag Team Championship alongside AEW’s Big Swole and was the GirlFight Champion. She is also a former SHINE Nova Champion.

WWE Signs Aja Perera

Yesterday marked the start date for the brand new class of recruits at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.

Sources tell us that one the names who started yesterday is independent wrestler Aja Perera.

Perera, 25, who made her debut in 2013 is an independent wrestler based out of Atlanta, Georgia.

She formerly held the SHINE Tag Team Championship alongside AEW’s Big Swole and was the GirlFight Champion. She is also a former SHINE Nova Champion.

She received a WWE tryout back in December of last year at the Performance Center.

Aja has worked for promotions such as SHIMMER, WSU, and Queens of Combat among others. She has also worked with the LLF promotion in Mexico and has toured Japan with Marvelous.
