angsty electricvinyl drabble for @markibrain mwah

It felt like such a dirty word.

Crackle was used to swearing- carried it into excess, sometimes, to the point where the faculty at VILE had to remind him to watch his language. He was an Aussie, after all- genetically predisposed to cursing as a part of his every day vernacular. It was simply another part of him that didn't fit in there, that he had to shed before it was cut from him by someone else's nimble hands.

But this was... different.

It was just a word. That's what he told himself. It wasn't even bad. It was just a word.

Then why did it feel bad to say?

It was supposed to be shameful, but not for Crackle. If anything, the word rolled off the tongues of the other VILE personnel sweetly, like honey. It was meant to be empowering to them, degrading to its holder, the person who had the dishonor of carrying such a title.

No one wanted another Carmen. Names held power, and in a sense, Crackle understood that letting her have her own name- one completely out of VILE's control- was further lending her the independence she needed to keep defying them.

So, when another incident occurred, the Faculty took it upon themselves to awkwardly rename the second escapee.

Not a name name, like Carmen. Not a codename, like Crackle. But a noun, as if he were an inanimate object or a character from a storybook.

Outlaw.

The name- no, the title- stuck like a mouse caught in a glue trap.

Crackle struggled to say it. Shout, it really- it ended up coming out in more of a bark, a sharply-edged weapon of tone and cadence. He wanted to say it as confidently as everyone else did.

His thumb hovered over the controls on his crackle rod, the energetic hum of the electricity warming his palm.

Tone Deaf looked over his own shoulder for about half a second. His gaze was sharp in a way that made Crackle feel like a knife was being driven into his gut. It wouldn't have been the first time.

Graham Calloway missed how nice he used to be. That was the only coherent thought he had as he brandished his weapon, pointing it outwards as if wielding Excalibur itself.

Tone Deaf's eyes flickered with something unreadable, and then he leapt off the Spanish-tiled roof. Disappearing into the night, along with the burlap sack full of invaluable art that was supposed to be between Graham's calloused hands, not his.

He hadn't frozen. He hadn't stumbled, tripped, or missed a hit- the internal malaise rising within him had happened over a split second. But in this line of work, a split second made all the difference between life and death.

But while Graham was still alive and well, standing alone on a rooftop somewhere in the desolate sea of night, he felt like death itself.
