Tav Asks

6. What is your Tav's origin story?

Galinndan and Shandri met in their adventuring years, eventually building their own home in the middle of the woods, starting a family short after. The first of the children ended up being triplets, much to the surprise of both their parents. Alyona, Leyla, and Stella were thick as thieves growing up, caring after their younger sister Aisling and as well as the youngest, their brother Naeris.

All of Leyla's siblings seemed to have a knack for defending themselves—Alyona and Stella both became rangers like their mother, Aisling found joy and power in music, and Naeris was a dedicated follower of Mielikki. But Leyla? Leyla struggled. She was a terrible shot, her music didn't carry the same weight as Aisling's, and while she had an academic interest in the gods, she could never figure out one to devote herself to. Her father Galinndan tried his best to teach her the ways of the druids, and while she understood them, it never manifested as druidic magic like she was hoping.

Until she started receiving visits from someone in her dreams.

This friendly visitor never wore the same face, always appearing as different forest animals, though Leyla always knew it was them. This visitor eventually helped her connect with the druidic magic she'd been trying to find for so long. Though her father knew immediately that the source of her power was different from his own. (Mechanically speaking, Galinndan is a Land druid and Leyla was a Dreams druid, which is a 5e subclass!)

Leyla's new magic became a sore spot between her and her father. While they were pleased she had finally starting showing signs of magic, Galinndan didn't trust the source of it. While Leyla insisted she had learned it on her own, she and her father were often at odds with each other as a result of his distrust. And when Leyla received a vision warning her of danger if they were to remain in their secluded area of the woods, her family was forced to make a choice. They stayed, Leyla left.

She travelled for weeks, studying the stars along the way. Leyla only stopped into towns briefly when she needed supplies or desired a real bed to sleep in. She grew closer with her dream visitor during her travels, bringing joy to every town she stopped in, healing wounds when she could. She started to read more now that she had unlimited access to books, something she'd never experienced before but something she found she really enjoyed.

Eventually Leyla found herself in Silverymoon. She hadn't intended to stay long, but fate had other ideas for her. While attending a ball, she met Traven, a cleric of Ioun that captured her heart. She eventually decided to stay in the city, both to be with him and to study everything Silverymoon had to offer. It was here Leyla was captured into the Nautiloid. She still isn't sure if Traven survived. After her capture, Leyla lost her connection with her dream visitor, instead having to rely on the magic she had learned through books.

23. What is your Tav’s favorite moment they’ve had with their lover?

It's hard to pick, honestly. (Especially not being 100% certain on Leyla's romances lol.) But her intended romances are Gale and Halsin, so I'll pick one for each!

Her moment with Gale is an easy one. Even though the romance bugged in my first playthrough of the game when I'd intended to romance him, the scene where he creates the starry scene is so sweet, especially for Leyla. She had always loved the stars, and after travelling through the Underdark into the Shadow Curse, she was really starting to miss them. To have him create that scene for her... She almost cried, honestly. It was such a thoughtful gesture from him.

For Halsin, I imagine the two of them spend a lot of time talking about druid things together. Leyla missed her druidic magic, even though being a wizard might have suited her more. Eventually the subject of her dream visitor came up, and he was able to help her identify who it might be! She won't know until the tadpole stops interfering, probably, but it was nice to have some answers on who they might be after all this time.

64. What Tarot Card best represents your Tav?

Hmmmm a difficult one. She's gone through a lot of growth in her journey, so her original card is much different than the current... but overall? And this is a little on the nose, but probably The Star! It's a card that's deeply connected with hope, which Leyla had often clung to in her darkest moments. It's a reminder for herself that she's going to be okay. I love that the reversed Star also represents how Leyla acts when struggling, as well. She often feels like the entire world is against her, and just really... unsure. No hope or faith that everything will be okay.

The High Priestess is probably the runner up though! It signifies intuition/inner voice, which also feels very Leyla. Actually the more I read on this, the more I consider it? This question is way harder than I was anticipating...

If you've made it this far, thank you! I have so many thoughts about Leyla, so this was a joy. I probably wrote way too much about her backstory, but I'd been itching to do it anyways....

yay! I’ll answer for Elias and Darcy bc I’m hyper focused on them atm (original ask list here!)

9. If they had to be put in a “get along shirt” with a companion, who would it be?

Darcy would probably be in the shirt with Gale, partially bc she doesn’t like how he takes her expensive magical items and he doesn’t like how she refuses to think before she acts (unintentionally).

Elias would be in the shirt with Astarion (at least, up until halfway through Act II). The vampire doesn’t like that the paladin refused his sexual advances and is a goody two shoes, and Elias isn’t a fan of how cruel Astarion is to others. They become friends in Act II, tho!!! (thanks Araj)

18. What modern day tv should would they binge over a weekend? do they get their LI to watch with them?

Darcy would be a big anime nerd (JJK, Demon Slayer, AOT). She would try and get Rugan to watch with her, but he’d complain about having to watch silly cartoons (he likes the big fight scenes tho).

Elias would watch documentaries and binge them over a weekend — true crime, nature, historical… you name it, he’s watched it. Shadowheart is intrigued by some of them, but others she might fall asleep while watching.

formal: What's your OC's formal look? Do they like dressing up? Do they have different looks for different occasions?

She does love dressing up. Since she is from the 3rd Drow house of Menzobarranzen she is used to expensive fabrics, jewels...the whole works. She would probably look grandiose compared to surface standards but it's what she's used to.

I am an absolute sucker for the intricate Drow hairstyles the nobles wear. They are outlandish and usually incorporate headpieces with them.

Even though she now lives on the surface, for a formal event, Tav'Lyn would still go all out with this type of look (minus the spider motifs).

hair: How does your OC wear their hair? Does it have some kind of meaning?

She keeps her hair long in the drow/elvish custom. While in formal situations like those mentioned above, she would go for something intricate, in her day-to-day life she is quite relaxed with her hair. Keeping it either in a messy bun or a half-up hairstyle. This is a deliberate choice since she is choosing to be more relaxed and less structured in her life versus when she was in Menzobarranzen.

alternate: What would your OC's alternate universe look be? If they're a fantasy character, what's their modern look? If they're sci-fi, what's their fantasy look? What AU would you want to see your OC in, and how would they dress themself? Bonus: Prompt an AU!

Hmm...her modern look...hard to answer... I am keeping everything about her the same except for the clothing choices....something very casual like jeans and a t-shirt. That is because she is someone who is actively rebelling against a structured/rigid society. Someone who had to dress in a particular way for so long (priestess robes) that she really just doesn't want to think about it anymore.

future: What's the worst possible future for your OC? Are they taking steps to avoid that outcome? Are they even aware it's a possibility?

i think, the worst possible future for ilya is going back to their old ways. they were trained since young age to be a killer for hire, and to regard themself as just a weapon that has to blindly do whatever it was told. for the past ten years, ilya has been trying to break free of this way of thinking, but it's still hard for them to be aware of their feelings and emotions because of it, but it's an improvement nonetheless.

they still kill and spy for coin, but now ilya has autonomy; they are doing this because they chose to continue. going back to their training means to ignore their wants, needs and feelings just to be useful for people that don't even think of ilya as a person.

ghost: Who or what haunts your OC? What happened? How do they live with their ghosts?

one might say they are a very poor assassin because of this, and ilya would agree, but they are haunted by some of the people they've killed. the major one is, of course, agate.

agate was a pirate captain that had a very.. tense relationship with the wrong people. she had principles and refused to break them which means she inevitably made more and more enemies after refusing to cooperate. it didn't take long for some of these people to find and hire ilya to infiltrate agate's ship, learn as much as possible about the trade routes the crew used and kill the captain. and ilya was planning to do just that, but everything went terribly wrong.

while they were pretending to be just another sailor desperate for coin, they not only found genuine friends among the crew, but also fell for agate, the captain they were supposed to kill. they allowed themself to live in the illusion of normal life aboard the ship with their lover for awhile, but the guilt became too much soon, and they disappeared without a word. nothing was that simple, however, since ilya was still "working" for people that refused to accept failure, and their response to ilya failing was harsh, both physically and mentally. tormented and desperate, ilya once again find agate and killed her in the heat of the moment, loosing one of their eyes in the process.

this incident affected them deeply. i made another post about this; it goes more in depth about the guilt and grief that overwhelmed ilya afterwards. it's bittersweet; because of this ilya had finally abandoned their previous life and decided to take charge of it, but it came at very, very high price.

7. What circumstances led to your Tav becoming their Class/Subclass?

Before she was kidnapped by Zhentarim smugglers, Darcy was actually training to become a Ranger. Unfortunately, since she ended up living in the streets of Baldur’s Gate, she has to adjust and become a Rogue, still using her archery skills but also very good at picking locks.

Divya was stuck between becoming a Cleric or a Monk for the Temple of Ilmater. She ultimately decided that since she wasn’t as experienced in magic, becoming a Monk was the best choice for her.

Elias knew he wanted to be on the front lines, fighting powerful foes, just like his father. After he passed away on his final crusade, Elias decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a Paladin. He trained hard, defending his hometown from evil, then decided to go to Baldur’s Gate to officially begin his career.

29. What advice would you give to your Tav?

To Darcy: go to therapy you can trust the people you surround yourself with, they would never hurt you

To Divya: go to therapy don’t depend on your God to give you a fulfilling life, that choice is up to you

To Elias: go to therapy never forget about the power of friendship, they’ll support you along the way
