The wild inconsistency in Sam and Gabriel's relationship in the first three Gabriel episodes is honestly so strange.

The first time Gabriel meets Sam (2x15), he's just another hunter who he couldn't care less about and would gladly kill, the second time they meet (3x11), he decides to psychologically torture Sam in order to teach him a lesson which is effectively supposed to help him, and then in 5x08 he's back to "I won't help you, I don't care about the fate of the world" again.

Nothing much to speak of for Sam in the first ep, but in 3x11, he spends six months of is (AU) life fixated only on hunting down Gabriel and killing him, and then in 5x08 he's like "we should talk to him! We should get him on our side."

Make it make sense SPN.
