Doctor Who

Favorite character: ...I mean, it has to be the Doctor. He’s the embodiment of Chaotic Good, and he’s so entertaining and absurd and so deeply good at the same time. Even if there are regenerations I like less than others, I always love the Doctor.

Least Favorite character: ...Rose Freaking Tyler. I don’t talk about her much, because I don’t want to inadvertently start something with anyone who feels differently, but this is not a Rose-friendly space.

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Canon-ish: Ben/Polly, Amy/Rory, Martha/Mickey. Non-canon: Harry/Victoria, Jenny/the son of Kate Stewart (he only barely exists in EU, but the idea of the Doctor’s daughter marrying the Brigadier’s grandson is just really cute to me)

Character I find most attractive: ...Hm. The Eighth Doctor, maybe?

Character I would marry: Harry Sullivan. He’s a sweet, gentlemanly dork of a Naval surgeon with traditional values--what’s not to love?

Character I would be best friends with: The Doctor. Not so much because he’s the character most like me, but because he’s very good at Being Friends With People.

a random thought: One thing I really love about the New Series is the increasingly consistent trend--especially in Moffat’s era, I think?--of explicitly treating the TARDIS as another character. It’s been there implicitly for a long time, but they made it much more canon and I appreciate that.

An unpopular opinion: Missy is not the Master, and I’ll never believe she is. This isn’t even about her gender, but about her whole personality.

My Canon OTP: Ian/Barbara, from the First Doctor’s era. This isn’t exactly controversial--I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything, in fandom or EU, where they weren’t happily together--but I love them.

My Non-canon OTP: Master/Clara... Which is entirely the fault of my sister’s fics. I wasn’t expecting to ship them!!

Most Badass Character: ...There’s so many to choose from. Aside from the Doctor, maybe Sarah Jane? Aside from being one of the greatest companions, she got her own spinoff show in which it was established that she’s been regularly saving the world on her own, she adopted two children and began mentoring three more in her fifties, and she was generally amazing for five seasons.

Most Epic Villain: ...The Master gets highest points for Presentation (as Megamind would say), and the Daleks are the most consistently menacing... But I think Rassilon scares me the most. He’s the founder of Time Lord society, and he’s evil.

Pairing I am not a fan of: The Doctor/anyone other than River, honestly. (Well, or his Gallifreyan wife from pre-canon days--I assume they were a good match, from what canon evidence we have)

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): ...A lot. Today, though, I’m going to say Sarah again. As said above, she’s a hero in her own right, and there’s no force in the universe that could stop her from having adventures. Reducing her to “female character pining after the Doctor and unable to get over losing him,” as they did in “School Reunion”, was a massive injustice to her character. (ESPECIALLY since their Classic relationship was not romantic. I mean, they’ve been shipped, of course, but their was nothing romantic in the writing or--IMHO--even the acting.)

Favourite Friendship: I think I’ve said this before, but the Doctor and the Brigadier. I love constant their friendship is, how much they’ve done for each other and respect each other, and how easily they fit back together every time they reunite.

Character I most identify with: ...I honestly don’t know. I love almost all of them, but I don’t think any of them click in quite that way, you know?

Character I wish I could be: Romana, maybe? She’s a Time Lady who traveled with the Doctor--that’s a pretty good deal!

Wodehouse Ship: I’m going to go with Mike/Eve here, for fun

When I started shipping them: As soon as the name “Jackson” appeared in Leave it to Psmith, I think. I trust and support Mike’s judgement. :P

My thoughts: I wish we’d, you know, seen them together. But I like that Mike has a wife he can take care of! I think that suits them both. (I also have a headcanon that Psmith went off--to the Drones, maybe?--and dug up dirt on Rollo, and that these discoveries were what pushed Mike to propose. Because he’s an honorable boy, and I think getting him to propose to an engaged woman would take some intervention from Psmith... Also I don’t like what we’ve heard of Rollo.)

What makes me happy about them: That they exist. That they got their farm, and that their best friends married each other, so the two couples can look after each other when they need to!

What makes me sad about them: No content. :(

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: ...I’ve never read any fic of them that wasn’t written by myself or one of this Tumblr microfandom, so... Nothing, really!

Things I look for in fanfic: Anything of them interacting with Psmith/Eve is especially fun. (Someday I’d like to try the scene where they find out Psmith and Eve are engaged. Because A) if they’re told soon enough, it would be the same meeting where they share the news that they got the farm, which sounds delightfully chaotic B) last they knew, Psmith and Eve hadn’t even met, and C) the second Mike heard they’d met at Blandings, he’d know Psmith was behind getting them the money. Somehow.)

My wishlist:

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: ...I’m sure there are other Wodehouse Protagonists who would suit them, but none come to mind. They’re good with each other.

My happily ever after for them: Hmm... For them to have lots of kids, and the Psmiths as neighbors, and play cricket with their combined families every summer. Margery can visit and be the fun aunt, and since they’re doing well financially maybe the Jackson parents will come live with them at some point? (I’d also like them to have a chance to help Psimth and Eve out of some significant trouble, since it’s usually the other way around... I don’t know what, though.)

Psych character: ...I’ll pick Henry, since I’ve been talking about him a lot lately

How I feel about this character: Good! He’s a good, though flawed, dad, and a good cop. (One of the few Lawful Goods in this cast, in my opinion.) He’s solid, and principled, and one of the few people who can really, truly keep up with/keep a hold of Shawn.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: His wife, I suppose? I don’t remember being a big fan of her, but he clearly still loves her, and I’m a sucker for “divorced couple reconciles” anyway... So yeah, Maddie.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Shawn, of course. Henry just... he built his whole life around raising his son, and it shows with him and with Shawn. They’ve both affected each other so much, and I love that the show just shows them being more openly important to each other as it goes on.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I’m not sure what’s “unpopular” here... But I think his training of Shawn was less about wanting him to be a cop, and more about giving Shawn A) something halfway constructive to do with his racing brain, and B) the tools to survive whatever trouble he'd get into in the future. Because, even then, Henry knew Shawn was never going to stay out of trouble.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish Shawn had told him he loved him out loud, to his face, which I don’t think quite happened. I’m pretty content with Henry’s content overall, though, I think.

Favorite friendship for this character: I’m going to cheat slightly and say Gus. It’s not exactly a friendship, but I love the implicit history there, and the way that Gus is practically his second kid and they both relate to each other as such. (I am also highly indignant that the “Henry & Gus” tag apparently doesn’t even exist on AO3... Distressing.)

My crossover ship: ...I got nothin. However, I have decided that in a Star Trek fusion AU (sort of a crossover!) Shawn’s mom would be a Vulcan. That’s the closest I’ve got.

Un-Fantastic: My problem with Nine

hi-ho! this is a post i’ve wanted to make for a while, but i’ve taken time to stew on it because i want my feelings to be communicated clearly and have my points hopefully make sense to people who disagree with how i feel but will at least understand where i’m coming from. Also, friends such as moot and penny-ana have made me pause and think about some of my criticisms which i’ve had to stew on to make sure i really hone on in what i think doesnt work for me and not being hypocritical

i’ll start out with saying that a this doesn’t really have much to do with Chris at all, i don’t have a problem with him, and i respect him a lot as a person especially for standing up for his beliefs in how things should go even if it got him blacklisted for a while, as well as wanting to make amends for past bullying and wanting that to change for people at large.

being a fan of the sixth doctor and the war doctor, that made me pause, so another thing i originally thought was a problem was feeling like people so attached to 9 weren’t ready for “real DW” and thats BS given the fact that three spent so much time stuck on earth and around it, as well as the fact that the autons appear in both their premieres, as well as like, hearing the issues moot and penny have with 3 and that era made me have to look deeper, which is how i really singled in on what i think my biggest problems are: My issues with nine comes from a lot of the things built up around him by super big early RTD fans, as well as the refusal of EU/other writers to really expand on much material outside of what was on the show as well as the refusal for people making content or doing anything to really criticize the time on the show for the fallacy of “short lived = good because theres not a lot to judge”

add in the fact that there are very few doctors who i take to immediately, usually taking a series and a half for me to be on board, 9 is stuck with 10 tv stories of average to eeeeeh quality in my opinion (I wouldnt’ really watch any of them again, except maybe the finale)

Nine never really stood out to me or made a lasting impression on me in the entirety of series 1, so not being able to understand all the hype has always frustrated and upset me. Fun fact: I was actually first exposed to doctor who via Dalek and the empty child two parter via a stream between friends when i was younger, but it never convinced me to watch it, nor did 10 later, only by series 7 was i interested and i jumped all in by 2013. After seeing those eps i was more interested in DWM 8 comics and izzy and destrii lmao

so by the time i was pretty into this, i started taking in all the extra material i could, including comics and audio and everything, and this is another wall with 9: People refuse to touch it because of how tightly bound rose is to him, refusing to touch on his pre-rose post-war doctor days and also people seem to not want to touch him until chris agrees to play him again, so i’m left again with less chances to redeem or find ways to like him like i did with 10, although my favorite ninth doctor story AND favorite slitheen story (yes) Doctormania was made by titan comics, but i wish there was more of that kind of thing with him that wasn’t cut short again, as well as the fact that, i haven’t finished that series of stories because of the bad way they treated martha in the next story, so much so i haven’t finished it because it frustrated me so much.

specifically on the fanbase: having a healthy love for your favorite portion of the franchise that is doctor who is fine! but sometimes nine fans can be so weird and pushy and dismissive of everything else it can be frustrating. I’ve seen some people hijack posts specifically wanting opinions about stuff OTHER than series 1 and they completely ignored him and started just filling it with that instead of what the user asked, also like just in general not being respectful of others tastes and just like, trying to convert people who just don’t gel.

I WANT to like nine, but the weird shielding of him from criticism as well as the lack of expansion on his character and the fanbase which can be kind of offputting, I can’t do much for that right now. I really hope that some day we can get the “FIRST” Ninth doctor adventure, post war doctor regeneration, and maybe stories to fill out his pre-rose time and some stuff inbetween. I don’t mind rose at all, and i like how she’s used in Doctormania which makes me wish we had more stories not afraid to have diff characters despite the limitations set by the shortlived incarnation here. I’ll always be the first one willing to try and reassess things whenever we get more. I may not feel the same way a lot of people do, but i try to appreciate every one of the doctors in some way even if i don’t enjoy them as much as my favorites.

Last night was a disaster. Nothing short of one.

Let’s not sugar coat it nor try to pretend it’s other than what it was.

It will have profound effects on our football club in due course; when the window slams shut and our EU exit is formalised, our ability to sign promising young players from European leagues will be severely compromised. That’s the reality.

I’ll spend the day angry over this, of course I will.

English working class communities, locked in the prejudices unleashed by Brexit, have put that selfish and self-destructive idea before everything else. They have elected a brazen liar and a party which will take their votes and then remove from them everything Tory austerity didn’t already take over the past nine years.

It’s like Sevconuts embracing Dave King for his honesty and leadership.

It’s like rewarding Gerrard for failure with a new deal.

I cannot fathom it, but I do know they will reap a bitter harvest for it.

The thing is, this decision took such a shattering break with logic that I wouldn’t be surprised if Johnson or some other heartless toerag turned the same trick in five years.

Since the 2017 vote, my exasperation with Jeremy Corbyn grew to the point where, long before last night, I knew one of the silver linings of this morning would be his retirement from front line politics and his return to the allotment.

I like the man. I value the things that make him a brilliant spokesman for all the causes he espouses and cares about.

But as the leader of a political party, he was a bust.

This is a political era characterised by viciousness; his preaching of a “kinder, gentler politics” was lunacy.

The enemy lied at every turn.

Its media arm battered this guy from one end of Britain to the other.

The charge that he was a “terrorist lover” couldn’t be made stick in 2017. The charge that he was an anti-Semite was untenable if you looked at the evidence … but more importantly, those things did not matter a damn to the average voter except in the most symbolic way.

Those communities who turned their backs on Labour last night because Johnson seemed to offer them a way to “send the immigrants home” don’t give a monkeys about the plight of Britain’s Jewish population. Many of these white, working class, pro-Brexit English voters probably harbour far more anti-Semitic feelings than anyone close to Corbyn ever has or will … but it was the way Corbyn reacted to the charge, and others like it, that sealed his fate.

All Corbyn had to do, right at the start, was threaten to sue anyone who even suggested he might harbour anti-Semitic views.

Project anger.

Project loathing of all those who tried to use that as a weapon against him.

Do the same with all those other smears.

Appear willing to chew nails and spit blood.

Corbyn should have been channelling his inner bastard.

That’s what the moment called for. The public will forgive almost anything – Johnson is one of the most mendacious individuals ever to hold high office and the electorate knows it and doesn’t care. But he’s seen as a strong leader.

Corbyn’s real problem was that he was weak.

Kinder, gentler politics is weak.

The enemy was using every weapon in the arsenal.

You cannot defeat that by appealing to the better angels of their nature.

You beat it by hitting them back. Hard.

You don’t bring a straw hat to a knife fight. You bring a bayonet.

Anything less and you’re done.

What does this have to do with football, you might ask?

Plenty, as it happens.

Brexit, as I said, is going to screw us good and proper unless the game in this country has real, and truthful, leadership, and if you reckon Rod Petrie is the visionary who’s going to deliver that then you’ve been sleeping. This moment requires something else.

The SFA should be getting together with the FA down in London to start lobbying Johnson right now before the chance to protect football slips away. It requires both organisations to bring in someone with real heft to do the heavy lifting; fortunately, there are candidates.

These candidates have to love football.

They have to understand the politics of the game.

And they have to understand the game of politics itself.

One of them is Andy Burnham, but he might be a tad busy as Mayor of Manchester.

Fortunately, we do have an alternative, someone with experience of high political office and who also knows football having served as the chairman of a major club.

His name? John Reid.

If the SFA brought him in to do some of the lobbying I’m sure that would send a clear message, and provide a little gravitas.

Of course, Sevconia would trip out of its nut at the very idea of it.

But the idiot children over there need to be told to sit down and shut up.

Scottish football has pandered to those goons for far too long. They were exactly the people Regan talked about when he predicted “civil disorder” in the event of Sevco not being allowed into the league. They block reform in the game here, because no-one wants to get on their wrong side.

Well how’s that working out so far? Scottish football remains stuck in the mud.

Their financially doped team might have “restored some pride” in our game – this is the media line – and boosted the national co-efficient, but the elements of “moral hazard” are all too evident in their club policies; they’ve just handed new deals to three of their over 30’s and to Gerrard himself.

King might be on the way out, but there is no sign whatsoever that they are preparing to embrace fiscal reality far less discipline, and their crazy actions still represent a danger not only to themselves but to the wider game here.

This is another example of “kinder, gentler politics” that has thus far produced no results. Weakness, in many forms. And our club looks weak because it hasn’t even proposed a reform agenda let alone pushed for it.

For too long we’ve waited for other people, or for God knows what … this game is bereft of leadership because Celtic won’t step up, and I sometimes think that Celtic won’t step up because the support hasn’t pressed them enough.

Kinder, gentler politics.

Trusting those for whom trust and honour and keeping their word means exactly nothing.

When does it end?

It’s time to confront the big issues … and that does mean facing down the rabid lunatics of Follow Follow, so delusional they believed they could remove the SNP from every Scottish seat they held if they simply urged “unity” on the “PUL community.”

Look how that turned out.

Believe me, we’re not dealing with masters of the dark Machiavellian arts here.

We’re dealing with Peepul who’s handful of brain cells rattle when they walk down the street.

Strength only respects strength.

It has taken a monumental, cataclysmic UK election result to slap some people within Labour out of their pathetic stance and their lethargy. The next five years in Westminster politics will be a bare knuckle brawl, which is what the last two should have been.

Too late now, of course, for millions of people and the communities which will be devastated.
