#i say all of this positively bc i just! i cant help admiring it!! even if its mundane or not a big deal to you i seriously cant wrap my head #around it.. this is in no way at all meant to be condescending or anything. whenever i look at someones bio and theyre like oh im working #as a lab assistant biologist pharmacist realtor etc im like woag.... thats insane.. and then i peep your art tag and it knocks my socks of #how?? what lives do you lead??? im so curious. i seriously want a peek inside your brains someday. or at least shadow you at work lol #i cant help but feel sad when someone says smth like well i have to support myself and art cant do that for me. or maybe you were #pushed into pursuing a 'safe' career bc i hear it a lot. all of my relatives have the same story working as nurses and OFWs for the family #i think for me its not about missed potential but rather its being sad about making a decision to put your happiness aside to get by #ive tried so hard to do it but it didnt work out. i guess watching you guys do it is fascinating to me #or maybe youve made peace with your decision or actually like what you pursued but im still amazed!! it makes me wonder what made #you pick one over the other in that case.. is it like putting time for two different things the way you would for a schedule?? hmmm #im doing graphic design so i dont really interact with ppl in other faculties even humanities like sociology or childcare... so i cant help #wondering what it must be like as someone whos pursuing visual communication both as an interest and career #i seriously wish i could do smth like a desk job or even admin and maybe ill try that if this doesnt work. or i could look into trades #but dyscalculia already makes it hard to do things like cash and mental math so i get overwhelmed if i think about this too hard #yapping

#boku no hero academia fanart #Yabureme Aizawa AU #nomu aizawa #shouta aizawa #principal nezu #this is a response to an anon but it had a second prompt so I didn't want to answer it and then forget about the second one #but ya Nezu is one of the faculty that comes by super often when Yabureme is in Tartarus #there's always been a powerful mutual trust between these two before he was taken and Nezu only wants to help #the first time Yabureme is in Tartarus he is completely unresponsive but Nezu visits him every few days anyway in an effort to get #a response out of him. it doesn't work #but during his second stint in Tartarus he's more lucid and Nezu becomes a huge comfort as Aizawa is rediscovering himself #he's the reason Aizawa eventually relents and agrees to see his class again. he is totally resistant to the idea bc he knows he hurt them #MULTIPLE times. plus he was barely their teacher so he shouldn't be that big of a deal to them right? they knew him for like a week #when Yabuzawa is his own free agent again Nezu helps him bear the weight of his trauma and they bond over shared experiences as experiments #canon Nezu and Aizawa are cute and funny and wholesome bc of the whole cuddle-in-the-scarf thing but it's way deeper than that #Nezu is one of the only ones that Aizawa knew respected him for his abilities as a teacher vs just his useful quirk. Nezu gave him his job #and believed in him so much that he let him do whatever he wanted in pursuit of teaching students who would live longer #and less foolishly. Nezu/Aizawa are friends and value each other a great deal thanks xoxoxo

Dr. L. (head of Tutorial Services, teaches English and Latin, has an office right off the children's section in the library) called me in to his office as I walked by, specifically to ask my opinion of the School of Languages and Literature becoming Humanities and Leadership. He hates it too and apparently wanted to hear someone else say it. I am amused.

#random personal stuff #he says it was claimed that the name change was a unanimous faculty decision but he knows for a fact that that was not the case #but maybe things can get straightened out again #the Dean who created all this nonsense is stepping down as Dean of L&L to take over the Leadership program #(convenient! she created a kingdom for herself) #and a very deserving English faculty member is stepping up as the new Dean #so maybe she will be instrumental in getting priorities back on track #once again I am very glad I did not take that teaching job

was talking to the other postdoc (same fellowship, different field) and it's wild how outright rude our host departments have been. with the exception of one or two people, we've had multiple microaggressions and dismissal of our research (while both depts are literally searching for someone to fill a position that would theoretically encompass what we do). again, i get we're temporary, and there's no obligation to really connect with us, but. i've gone to other dept lectures out of curiosity/overlapping research interest and the faculty have been SO nice, made a point of remembering my name if they saw me again, asked about my research, etc.

#thinking about how everyone assumes i am fresh out of high school when i am nearly 30 #and the fact that i can't really connect w any of my classmates bc they're so much younger than me #most of the ppl my age (and younger) are faculty but i can't really connect w them either since i'm a student #and i don't really want to connect w any of them anyways since none of them wear a mask #feeling v directionless i went back to college bc i was sick of working low paying garbage dead end jobs #but i still don't know what i want to do #and i know most ppl change majors multiple times and i have plenty of time #but in my new student class for all of the assignments lately i have to choose but i still have no idea so it's v discouraging #the more i look into my options the more i am like i don't want to do any of these actually #or i don't feel capable/it would take too long #today is day 3 of my new job on campus is v laid back and only 13 hours a week but i still feel like i have such little time now #i am tired and lonely #also feeling p bad about my appearance i keep feeling like i wish i was still cute #but i also thought this years ago and i am sure i will think the same thing about my current self in a few years #sigh

#random personal stuff #if I go to bed then I have to get up for work tomorrow #not really looking forward to it #Friday it was revealed that a book I had dutifully ordered at the request of the person in charge of what we order #was requested as a replacement but we had never owned it to begin with #best case scenario it was a careless mistake #worst case scenario it was outright dishonesty to get away with ordering a book that was a personal choice and not approved by faculty #this guy often drives me crazy but I don't like thinking of him as the sort of person who would do that #and I don't know what the outcome is going to be but it's going to be tense carrying around this information inside #relabeling books is a huge chunk of my job right now #and it's incredibly mind-numbing and dull but at least I can put in headphones and exit reality so maybe I'll do that tomorrow #just a few more days and I'm out of here

Also on the subject of bio musicals… jelly’s last jam is honestly the gold standard for me because it acknowledges the impact of his work as a musician while deconstructing the harm he caused as a man. It’s not just “this was his life and music” it uses his life as a framing narrative that facilitates questions of loyalty/betrayal/identity/entitlement/worth. It doesn’t glorify his legacy it examines and engages with it in a way that holds up really well. And maybe I’m just obsessing over it because I recently did a two day training on dialogic interpretation but like. The Chimney Man as a character asks the audience the kind of critical questions that we ask our interpreters at the museum as we actively work on how to better examine our own famous/problematic guy. The kind of role that that character fulfills could so easily have been developed as just a narrator but George C Wolfe made a conscious decision to make it the role of an active interlocutor. Which also ties into the history of minstrelsy and vaudeville. Which is directly tied to the history not only of the period in which the show is set but also the history of black music and dance and theatre in America. It’s so layered and intentional and it’s one of those things where I’m like why did we never talk about THIS in any of my theatre history or critical theatre courses in undergrad. We talked about so many examples of theatre as social commentary or theatre as history or theatre as education and this example was right there and a part of RECENT and ACCESSIBLE theatrical history. But it never once came up.

#probably because the entire theatre faculty is white and now that I think about it #I don’t think any of them would be comfortable with the amount of being uncomfortable that’s necessary to talk about racism in America #let alone colorism within the black community #as a bunch of upper middle aged white people with black and brown students #and this is one of those fucking things that makes me consider grad school again so that I can become a professor who isn’t a pussy #but the thought of grad school makes me physically ill #so I just do my museum theatre job and rework scripts to acknowledge the agency of the domestic servants that worked for this man #what do you do with a ba in theatre #this apparently #museum musings #jelly’s last jam

I think one thing I am finding a bit draining about higher ed admin work is that we spend sooooo much time talking about students but so little time building and sustaining relationships with actual students. like we do lots of focus groups and one-off advising sessions and random drop-ins at events but we don’t get to teach students for a whole semester or advise a student for the whole year or whatever. and idk all the ‘talking about a group without sustained relationships with that group’ means that the group you’re talking about becomes this sort of abstracted Concept, this enigmatic and unknowable entity you are always seeking to court or appease or entreat or whatever. which idk lots of problems there that I won’t get into! but I also think you just get less of the joy and clarity of purpose that flows through building real relationships with kids and getting to know them better over a longer period of time. idk I think of some of the kids I worked with for three or four years at my old institution, where I got to discover over time how funny they were, how particular in their likes and dislikes, what made them nervous vs. what made them feel really good about themselves, how they talked and who their friends were and what their relationship with their families was like, all the little idiosyncrasies that make you realize over and over again how different kids are from each other and just… idk… how empty and self-serving our abstract concept of The Students can become. [redacted] is always saying things like “we must center student voice in this!” and it’s like okayyy yeah I know what you mean but there are as many student voices on this campus as there are students! and also you are afraid of students and get visibly nervous when you’re left in a room with them 😂 idk I love my job and see myself here for a long time, but also working mostly with other adults is nowhere near as fun as working with kids and I can see how easy it is to get stuck in these rarefied little pockets of the university where it’s just all budgets and working groups and last year’s assessment data all the time, and you’re totally cut off from that rushing current of life and joy and exasperation and Huge Feelings that flows through working with kids.

#anyway had a really good student meeting today #and I think I want to just really make it a rule for myself #that I’m at least TRYING to talk to kids as often as I talk to adults (even if I can’t succeed) #and that I teach at least twice a year #it looks like I will be co-teaching two classes this year #but I want my own classrooms eventually too!! #and if I ever am the kind of admin who is afraid of spending time with kids then I have really strayed lol #i knew this would be part of the challenge/adjustment of this role! #like if you’re not faculty then as you move up you move away from kids #alejandro and I were talking the other night about our friends who have gone into tech doing easy $$ jobs that would make me despair #and he was like ‘you and me… we got the disease’ and the disease is just like. the need to teach lol
