And here are some more characters I made for the Urusei Musuko AU.
At the top:
Haruna Mendou, son(?) of Shutarou and Asuka: The newest heir and scion of the Mendou clan, ladies and gentlemen. Haruna is every bit their father’s son: intelligent, honourable, dashing, charming and a master swordsman. They have much of the female student body at Shakkou Academy wrapped around their little finger. However, they conceal a secret: much like Ryuunosuke was, they were assigned female at birth and raised as a man by the Mendou family.
This is due to the arrangement made between the Mizunokoji family and the Mendou family: all daughters born between them would be of the Mizunokoji clan, while all sons would be of the Mendou clan. When Shutarou’s third attempt at a child bore a daughter, he grew desperate. If the Mizunokoji family discovered the truth about Haruna, it might mean that the entire Mendou clan would have to commit seppuku...
And at the bottom, from left to right:
Hiyori Mizunokoji, daughter of Tobimaro and Ryoko: It would be an understatement to describe the heiress of the Mizunokoji clan as “hard to figure out”. She attends Shakkou Academy with everyone else (in the same class, no less), but has somewhat different circumstances. For one thing, she attends class inside of a large black steel box, carried by her servants.. There are slots all around so she can see and hear outside and a speaker system to help communicate, but the only way to get her in or out is through her servants or her grandmother. As a result of being a literal “daughter in a box”, she seems to have some odd ideas about relating to people, especially men.
Taka Ozuno, son of Tsubame and Sakura: With a mother as beautiful as Sakura and a father as handsome as Tsubame, it would be surprising to note that their son Taka takes after his great-uncle Cherry more so than anyone else. Like Cherry, he has a habit of popping up when least expected and a near bottomless appetite, as well as a penchant for seeking out misfortune and strange paranormal phenomena. Like Tohru with his “ghost eye”, Taka has the ability to see spirits, and an encyclopedic knowledge of youkai, ghosts and demons. He has made Shakkou Academy his personal project, since he can detect a veritable miasma of misfortune enveloping the place, not to mention it seeming to draw in practically everyone who was once among “those people”...

Urusei Yatsura, Omnibus 3
By Rumiko Takahashi. Released in Japan in two separate volumes by Shogakukan, serialized in the magazine Shonen Sunday. Released in North America by Viz Media. Translated by Camellia Nieh.
After the soft reboot of this series with the arrival of Shutaro Mendo, Takahashi is going back and trying to see how she can work the pile of characters she introduced at the start back into the series, while also introducing new and hilarious regulars. Sometimes this works and sometimes it does not. The first half of this volume succeeds in re-integrating Sakura into the cast, now the high school nurse in addition to a shrine priestess, and we also meet Mendo’s rival Tobimaro Mizunokoji, a baseball-obsessed samurai type who is after revenge but is too dim to get it. (He’s also really obsessed with his childhood friend/rival, and has a passel of gorgeous female bodyguards that he barely pays attention to. I don’t think Takahashi intended him to have gay overtones, but…) Sakura will stay a regular, and Tobimaro will pop up now and then throughout the series. But not every new character is destined to become part of our beloved cast.
(The cover art, which has Ryuunosuke and her father; Sugar, Ginger and Pepper; and Kotatsu-neko – none of whom are introduced yet – is a tad spoilery. As are the endnotes, which discuss Ran before Ran is introduced.)
The second part of this volume seems like a series of failed cast introductions. Hanako-sensei is introduced to be a variation on the “well-meaning teacher who wants to inspire youth”, but he’s honestly pretty dang dull, and will quickly be replaced by Onsen Mark (who we’ve seen before) becoming a regular. (I will gloss right over Onsen Mark’s name in this omnibus, thanks much.) Natsuko’s volleyball-obsessed girl filled with rage is a very amusing arc, with great facial expressions, but she’s not someone you can imagine showing up over and over again. The same with Kaede the runaway ninja girl, who honestly seems like she’d be better off far away from Ataru and company. Fortunately, at the very end we meet Lum’s cousin and childhood “friend” Ran, who arrives with a cute act and a thirst for revenge, and is easily the best part of the back half of the book. You can see why she sticks around.
As for our regulars, they do pretty well. Ataru and Lum are fighting less, and frequently team up against common enemies (my favorite part being “Cry, Lum.” “Waaaaaaahh!” “See, you made her cry!”). Now, Lum still gets angry, and can be seen hear biting Ataru on the arm in addition to shocking him, but Ataru doesn’t seem to resent her presence anymore. Which is good, as she transfers into his school in this volume, thus helping to avoid finding reasons for her to show up in the classroom. The addition of the other cast members also helps take the focus of the manga off “will Ataru choose Lum” and focus more on “this obnoxious cast of obnoxious humans and aliens”, which will help it survive for the remaining fourteen omnibuses.
So there are some growing pains in this book, but it’s still highly entertaining, and Takahashi’s art has gotten to the point where you don’t have to apologize for it anymore. Still essential.

Ryoko's outfit was changed presumably due to the difficulty of animating a full camo outfit. It was a great look though.

Looking at your next generation ideas, how do you think the teens of Urusei Yatsura are as adults, like their jobs?
This is an interesting question, I think...
Ataru and Lum have somehow mostly managed to stay the same, much to Lum’s frustration. Even after they finally tied the knot, Ataru still has a lot of trouble staying committed to anything. Worse, now that Ataru’s a minor celebrity and an author thanks to his memoir, he is regularly encouraged to stay as he always has been, even after a son (Kokeru) and two twin daughters (Rami and Romi).
Shinobu kinda slipped into a regular boring life for a while, becoming an office lady in a Mendou-owned company. She managed to fit in so well that almost nobody in her work-life knows that she was a member of the Cursed Class. Eventually, she got married to Inaba, and tried to make a go of it as a housewife and mother, but she was weighed down with loneliness and feeling like she was missing the old days, especially when her husband was busy with work. Despite this, she tries her best to raise her son Shiro, with the help of her parents and Ryuunosuke. She was surprised when she found out that Shakkou Academy was founded by the Mendou family, not to mention somewhat peeved.
Ryuunosuke left Tomobiki and Tokyo after finishing school, since she couldn’t afford to do anything other than run the Hamachaya. But she managed to break free of her father and run the place her own way, making it into a popular izakaya. Nagisa gave her a son, but then “re-died” (his physical body only being temporary) soon after. Left alone to raise her son Tohru, Ryuunosuke was offered by Mendou to return to Tomobiki to enroll her son in Shakkou Academy, which she ended up accepting out of lack of anywhere else to go.
Mendou’s always the same he has been, lording over Tomobiki like his personal fiefdom. He claims to have done a lot for the community, such as building Shakkou Academy, but murmurs on the wind suggest that he still carries a torch for Lum. He has one “son”, Haruna, who he raised in his image; he fears that if the secret about “him” came out, it would mean the downfall of the Mendou clan.
As mentioned before, the Stormtroopers have mostly moved on from Lum, with the exception of Megane, who still secretly obsesses over her, moving his private shrine somewhere his wife can’t find easily. Perm and Kakugari work together as mail couriers, while Chibi is an accountant. They mostly avoid Tomobiki nowadays, even though their kids attend Shakkou.
Sakura and Tsubame married and had a son, and promptly found out that, ironically, the interference of Moroboshi and his friends were the only thing that kept them together. After Ataru left and Taka was born, they quickly drifted apart.
The only thing that changed about Cherry was a couple of extra wrinkles on his forehead.
As related before, Benten and Oyuki sort of fell together into a relationship that they’ve decided to make into a family out of sheer gravitation. Ataru still thinks that he’s in with a chance, even after the two had kids. They’re willing to play along, mostly to tease Lum.
As for Ran and Rei, they’re mostly living happily together on Earth. Rei sort of has an office job, but nobody is really sure what he does. Ran occasionally plots to torment Lum and her family, and her daughter Ren has decided to join in, thinking it as a sort of game.
The Mizunokoji family live mostly sequestered away from everyone else. Now that Asuka’s done her duty as a mother, she now resides in the family compound with her mother and father, her daughter Hiyori and her “nieces”. But there have been rumours of a strange “metal monster” roaming Tomobiki randomly, as well as randomly hearing a woman call for her older brother...

Some more UY kids for ya
If people are making fanart of these, I don’t know if I could stop now.
For now, the school that everyone is attending is known as Shakkou Academy, and it is a very modern private high school compared to Tomobiki High, as it was only built a couple of years before. The school uniforms are blazers and sweaters, instead of Tomobiki High’s gakuran and serafuku, but the uniform code is lax enough that some people, like Momo, can get away with just wearing the blazer and have a T-shirt on underneath.
Kokeru, Ren, Momo and Haruna are all in Class 1-4, which is taught by Jariten. Also in the same class are Fuko and Misao. Run, Sita and Yuri are in Class 1-2, along with Kuro profiled below, Souta and Garu. Taka is a second year, as so is Hiyori.
One more thing of note: the construction and administration of this school was pretty much through a certain rich family local to Tomobiki which we all might know of...
Taka Ozuno, son of Sakura and Tsubame: With a mother as beautiful as Sakura, and a father as handsome(?) as Tsubame, you’d think the son would take after their parents. However, Taka takes after his great-uncle Cherry more than anyone else: he has a habit of popping up when least expected, he has a bottomless appetite for food, and he has a habit of sticking his nose in when the unusual is happening. Much like Momo, he has the ability to see spirits, and has encyclopedic knowledge of youkai, demons and bizarre phenomena. He’s especially interested in the high school he attends, though, as it’s the same one pretty much all of the other characters I’ve come up with are attending. If this school not only has the children of those guys attending it, but also coincidentally has some of them as members of the faculty, then there has to be some kind of immense power behind it.
Hiyori Mizunokoji, daughter of Ryouko and Tobimaro: It’s kind of hard to figure out the daughter of the Mizunokoji clan. This is mostly because she, as a policy of her family in lieu of her mother’s circumstances, is required to make “regular contact with the common people”. The upshot of this is that she also attends the school everyone goes to. Well, “attends” is kind of a misnomer; she’s independently tutored, and most of her interactions with the other students are while residing in a large steel box, or through her ever-present kuroko servants. As a result of her upbringing, she seems to have some very strange ideas about other people, especially men.
Hiyori also has two younger “sisters”, born through her paternal uncle Shutarou Mendou, as well as her cousin Haruna.
Kuro, daughter of Kurama: Yes, Kurama finally managed to get herself a mate (thanks to Elle and her Refrigerator of Love, actually)! Kuro is another student at the very same high school everyone else attends. Kuro is a romantic at heart, and a refined lady of taste. Or at least that’s what she would like to be seen as, befitting somebody who is supposed to be a princess. But she has a habit of being incredibly jealous, especially of Run, and would do anything to bring her down. At least she can be thankful that nobody, her included, knows what Hiyori looks like beneath her imposing steel cube...
