an allegory
A prince and a scholar are in a high class coffee shop in the late 1700′s talking about the prospect of democracy and republicanism.
S:“well, they were making good points”
The prince is disgusted.
P:“Are you mad? no society sane enough to govern itself would willingly choose democracy over the tried and true stability, and authority of a king who rules for life!”
the scholar however, is nonplussed
S:“now now, there are many men who are more well traveled than you or I that have said otherwise.”
P:“then name one good example where it WORKED”
S:“alright, lets start with the nations being made today.”
P:“HUH? Are you talking about America? that barely functioning gaggle of misfits? you know colonials are fleeing that place in droves right? no one wanted democracy there except a couple of radicals! and now that they have it they barely know what to do with themselves! they are neck deep in debt and cant get anything done!”
S:“well im sure its simply an early hurdle from that war”
P:“pffff! like they will ever get themselves out of that mess! and I do hope you aren't insinuating the brutality happening in France right now is to be cited as an example for democracy’s supposed “stability“
P:“GOOD POINTS? They are slaughtering men in droves! Even their own! you expect me to take any point they had seriously when they act like a bunch of barbarians?”
S:“they have an elected parliament”
S:“what about Britain?”
P:“what about Britain? they aren't a democracy”
P:“eugh, that’d be too democratic. I dont want my people getting any wrong ideas”
P:“that doesnt make them a democracy!”
S:“then why doesnt your father implement a parliament?”
S:“Listen, all I am trying to say is that there could very well be systems better than the one we have right now. Perhaps democracy isn’t the one you see much light in but that shouldn't discount the potential for change in the future, especially because we are becoming so advanced and widespread as a society! It will become increasingly difficult for one man to hold all the power in nations so large while remaining good to his people!”
S:“What about greece and rome?”
P:“primitive savages! those systems would not work in a society as complex and advanced as ours today! besides, Rome eventually became a dictatorship; DURING WHICH they became christian no less! If anything that proves my point that civilized nations MUST be ruled by a king in order to remain civil!”
P:“Feh! I dont see why me or my nation has to change because of some wide eyed philosopher wants to test whether or not his debauched ideas of how society should work can function! To allow such idiocy would be irresponsible to my people! besides, if people like you are so keen on the prospects of democracy, France has their national razor ready for them!”
the clock chimes. the Prince perks up
P:“oh dear, look at the time, I must be going”
“farewell” the scholar says as he too stands up and starts walking into the streets, pondering the words of the prince. many of the things he said were true, and he wonders for a second if he is the fool for falling in love with the prospect of democracy. He silently hopes that perhaps one day this question can be answered, and that perhaps democracy can truly bring a world thats more equal and free for everyone
