So I got a bunch of videos saved under the drafts section so in the appropriate time I could write about them. Sometimes it’s when I’m into someones riding for whatever reasons, or it’s associated with a thought I’m having. Other times it just seems timely. It’s all pretty coordinated in it’s own chaotic way. One of the big factors on how I choose a particular video is it’s rarity in a way. Someone like Vic Ayala has very limited sections but huge reputation so I got his clips stored away for whenever I feel like visiting them. Paul Buchanan epitomizes this thought. Online and offline for the most part, this is it. It’s like seeing Bigfoot, an idea that has been reiterated repeatedly after the saddening news of Paul Buchanan as of late.
I don’t know a lot about Paul Buchanan. Just that in the early days of BMX internet world in the 2000′s, even then Paul Buchanan was an enigma. I remember someone asking on some message board if he really tailwhipped the Austin Church Gap. He had that mystique about him where someone could get caught up with that idea. Add this completely next level T1 commercial he dropped in 1999, people were thinking ...it’s possible. To put all that into perspective... Fids and Ian Morris were still pros who were riding for S&M and showed up in their video that year, “4″. Brian Castillo who I think has a full fledged family with wife and kids now, may or may not have gotten laid in 1999 as hinted by his Props Interview that year. It was just that long time and Paul was doing cranks arms when cranks arms weren’t even a thought.
You watch this section and you kind of see different marks of future generations in it. That’s how you know it’s progressive. The half cab down stairs which is something really now. Footjam whip which would characterize the later mid school park and street era. A very dialed wallride table that I’m pretty sure happened but what defined a table during this era is very loose. The no footer to table. Something really pushed by Ruben in Forward which will be released in 3 years. Also the notion that Ruben’s whip in street in Forward was astounding to a lot of people then. And to revisit the feeble to crank arm. Sure it’s a wide rail but it’s the idea to push a crank arm to something like that was unheard of. I’m not sure if cranks arms were even done then. Maybe as a stall or a light grind on a quarter but I don’t think anything like that. You can watch this today and it’ll pass as really good riding still, that’s because it has that timeless aspect to it. For all of this to happen in one day is what makes Paul Buchanan the legend he already was but will also grow even more into.
He was a full rostered pro rider for an already Legendary team that included the likes of Joe Rich and Taj Mihelich, both riders in their full prime. Not only that but Garrett Byrnes and later Ruben Alcantara who carved their own form of riding into niche then grew that into a full on industry trend. Robbo and Nate Wessel, who pushed the BMX into different limits off the bike with ramps and industry. Scott Malyon and Elf who are the definitions of underground legends. Paul Buchanan joined the like of them and with this video it’s easy to see why as a rider but the trend you see is that all these T1 riders grew beyond being just a rider and Paul Buchanan the same.
In BMX and to a wider extent there is a heavy emphasis on storytelling in the human tradition. They say it’s a defining point in civilization and language. It predates writing and often times storytelling is associated with being the source of the first forms of visual art created to accompany early man’s stories. Even the first music and songs were just stories that people tell one another, something that hasn’t changed regardless of the sound. We have used stories to pass on knowledge and ideas to one another. To give the listener almost an experience for them to ingrain that very knowledge. It’s a powerful tool used everywhere today if you really think about. The news, music, books, movies. It’s universal to the human condition and every culture recognizes it. That includes BMX. Paul Buchanan is synonymous with this. He’s a folk hero. He’s like one of those legends that exist beyond any type of criteria. Like we have this one homeless guy in my hometown of Richmond,VA. Everybody knows him as Birdman. He makes bird sounds and almost always wears sunglasses. There has to be more people that know of this guy and recognize him immediately than certain people with lots of Instagram followers. It’s just he doesn’t exist in that form. But through tales, he truly has life. It’s the strangest thing if you think about it.
For a guy who has very few printed photos, even fewer clips, almost no contest footage besides you know.. an X-Games that one time. He lives on through stories and that’s more apparent now than ever. Cause even with the lack of physical evidence to prove or disapprove these claims, Paul Buchanan very much remains a well respected and recognized legend in the BMX ranks. It’s as if his primary source of coverage for Paul Buchanan has become just words. It doesn’t get anymore simple or beautiful than that.

#ThrowBackThursday to my bike days! 🚲 😔 The last couple weeks I have really been missing this life. I stopped because of work and lifting but I do miss it. A lot of times we forget about our passions and dreams because reality steps in. I’m kind of thinking about going back but I haven’t stepped on a BMX in a while lol Those who know me from back in the day, know that I use to skate heavily but I really found my love on two wheels!! 🤷🏾‍♂️who knows, I may just have to pick up a bike and start all over again 🤔 . . . . . #PedalBikeLife #BikeLA #Bmx #FitBmx #BurnFatNotFuel #iRideLa #VansBmx #ODIGrips #FootJam #IG_Bikes #BMXIsLife #BikeIsLife #iGoFast #RideYourBike #BikeVentures #AnimalBmx #MorningRide #TailWhip #DoYouEvenRideBro #CycleLife #Cycling #CyclingPhotos #Bicycle #RideBMX #SkatePark (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BppRuelFPSL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=10bf0btmausac

Throwback Thursday
28 years ago. A footjam tailwhip on a small ramp…wedge ramp. Early semi-street riding in NJ at TC Cycles. I liked Airwalk shoes! For more BMX craziness pick up my book, “The Average BMXer” available on Kindle.
