Hey! I appreciate your perspective on computer-based things. I think I need to get a laptop and would love your opinion on decent brands. If you don't have an opinion or want to answer please disregard the q.

Context: I'm often on the move and really want something small, light, and that will last a long time. I'm bad about buying new things or taking things to be fixed so ideally it's not something that dies quickly or needs frequent repairs. For a while I used an iPad for this but I need more of a keyboard than tablets have and the shelf life of an iPad is shorter than it should be for the cost. Mine is 7 years old and only works while plugged in... I liked my Macbook Pro I got for college but it's almost 15 years old and given I haven't needed a new one since I don't think spending all that on a Mac makes sense either. I use a gaming PC mostly but I'm going to need to travel a lot more in the upcoming year. I'm ok to spend up a bit since I want it to last.

I think you're going to have to adjust your expectations about the average functional lifespan of electronics. Seven years is a lot to get out of any tablet and fifteen years is way way way above average for a computer.

At work we estimate that the functional lifespan of a laptop will be around five years and the functional life of a desktop will be around seven years; we include upgrades in that lifespan, like adding RAM and storage.

It is not *unusual* to get more than five years out of a laptop or seven years out of a desktop, but if you are a heavy user of anything other than a browser and a word processor, that's about the time when you'll find that the computer feels slow enough to be frustrating. This isn't a hard limit, and it's not something that everyone experiences because people use computers differently, but if you're an artist and you use a drawing program that program will start to feel slow after a while because as updates and patches and drivers have been tweaked for newer devices they've slowly left your device in the dust.

This isn't planned obsolescence, by the way. Computer manufacturers try to "future proof" their devices to a certain extent, but you just can't anticipate certain kinds of changes. Maybe your laptop was manufactured before there were consumer SSDs available so its operating system doesn't take the advantages and limitations of SSDs into account. Maybe your desktop was built for DDR3 RAM and we're now on DDR5 and people aren't writing programs to the standard of the old technology, they're taking advantage of the standards of the new technology.

Since you were able to use your devices comfortably for such a long time, it sounds like you're not a very heavy user and don't need to worry too much about beefing up your specs. However it does sound like you want to keep your computer and use it as long as possible while paying a reasonable price for it (which is good! I think we should all try to extend the lives of our electronic devices as much as possible!).

I actually think you sound like a good match for a Framework laptop.

Framework is a company that makes laptops that are a lot more modular than what's on the market these days. They're mean to be easy to open up for upgrades and sturdy for heavy use. Most of the parts of the laptop are easily replaceable - including the screen - so you can use them for a long time and easily make upgrades that will help the computer feel fresher.

They're a bit more expensive than comparable PCs but much easier to repair if you aren't comfortable opening up your own computer (framework is intentionally built to be easy for people who are non-technical to work on their computers), and they are a LOT less expensive than comparable macs.

I still think you're probably looking at around 7 years of regular use out of a Framework and it won't *break* at that point, it will just. Probably be a bit slow and frustrating. You might not be able to get parts for it after a certain point. You eventually won't be able to upgrade the OS. But that's true of all computers.

I've still got my 2005 macbook. It still turns on, I can still use garage band on it. But it doesn't connect to the internet and uses such an old USB standard that it is extremely slow to transfer data on or off of and it cries and freezes if i try to use photoshop. It's not broken, it's just no longer useful as a daily computer.

What I'm defining as functional here is "Is able to run multiple programs (including at least one browser with 50+ tabs open and two office suites) at the same time for 8-10 hours a day without crashing, freezing, or losing data and restarting is not a major inconvenience."

In those terms, it does sound like you're probably in need of an upgrade (I can't imagine that your current machine is particularly quick) and I think that a framework laptop would suit your needs well.

If you're looking for something somewhat less expensive, you can generally find a decent thinkbook with a 12th or 13th gen i5 processor, 16GB RAM, and a 500GB SSD for around $700-ish, which is the low end of what I think you're going to pay for a decent laptop. I'm reccing lenovo here because I personally like them and have found them to be very easy to crack open for repairs and upgrades. Stick to the thinkbook over the thinkpad because that's the business line and is a bit sturdier and they are designed to be easier to upgrade over time.

Actually, here's a thinkbook with a 12th gen i5, 40GB RAM, and a 1tb SSD for under $700. That's a shockingly good price for that laptop; the reseller OEMGenuine is one I've purchased from many times before for work and I've found them to be reliable, though the reason those specs are so good is because they've added aftermarket parts, so your RAM and SSD won't be under warranty from Lenovo.

For Framework you're looking at at least $1000, but it's easy to plug and play with upgrades so you can start out with lower specs (except processor, don't cheap out on the processor) and upgrade later. The framework is a bit smaller and easier to travel with, but I have a laptop quite similar to the lenovo and it's not a huge pain to move around - it's very light but the 15" screen might be bigger than you're looking for.

If you're willing to spend a little bit more and you're very uninterested in doing your own upgrades and would prefer the most computer you can get for your money right out of the gate, this is a 12th gen i7 thinkpad with 40GB RAM and a 2TB SSD for $1150. (I've not ordered from this reseller before, so maybe check over their terms if you're considering purchasing from them.)

And I forgot I had this tumblr. And as always, I go through nostalgia and look through these posts.

And man….

I’ve always wanted to update this, so here we go… (APPRENTLY I DID A SENIOR YEAR AND COLLEGE ONE, SO HERE’S THE JOB ONE. BUT IT’S BEEN 11 YEARS SINCE THE FIRST OK?)

Idk...I'm running out of ideas and it's only my 2nd day being here. First year. Been awhile (+11 years)

Have:

-HD Camcorder(Vlogging, duh!)Phone and or Z981. Smartphone, DSLR(ish), DJI Pocket 2

-iPad(It looks awesome!)Almost never. Accomplished a year after, and in 2022 (M1 iPad Air -> M1 iPad Pro)

-Macbook(Pro)(same reason as iPad)Same reason as iPad. Acquired in college (15” Retina) Still uses the laptop, but lightly or while on the go. Good powerhouse for more than 7 years.

-DSLR(or even a good P&S)Z981, still need a DSLR. Acquired, but not heavily used. Maybe will invest in a mirrorless camera one day.

-Adobe Creative Suite. I have my ways to get it hehe.

-iMac(as a substitute for Macbook) Nah, I have a gaming desktop

-Flat-Screen TV (no more than 40". This will be in my room) I still lowkey want a TV... but 3 27″ monitors can do for now.

-Xbox 360 w/Kinect(Dance Central...nuff said) Wow, so obsolete. I don’t know if I still want a console outside of my Switch.

-More Wii games(its getting there) I have a Switch…man 2 generations later.

-PS3?(blu-ray and other things...NOT adding my debit card number in there however) I don’t remember the card fiasco Sony had, but I very low-key want a PS5.

-Cash( I finally gone broke...oh joy) I make money now. Wish I can tell 17 year old self you found a job and a career and it’s NOT Civil Engineering. (APPRENTLY I DID IN COOLEG)

-Headphones(Bose, Beats, Skullcandys(t'wards some extent), any of those would work. I own WAY too many earphones but not enough headphones. Sony WH/WF X-1000M4 baybeeeeeee

-Spare Computer (perhaps a desktop computer). It would be either a great back up computer when this laptop goes awry, or use it as a main machine. This laptop I'm using is getting old... I have too many PCs and latptops lol, halp

Do:

-Successfully vlog.I fail at this. I semi-fail at this. My channel is getting there.

-Record something in the outside world without being afraid...I fail at this as well. Still a bit uncomfortable, but I can do it!

-Be a railfan!(me going to take pics on trains)I'm getting there... Done it back in college. Now I just want to watch trains from time to time.

-Ride the commuter lines around here in Nor Cal (never ever ridden on a commuter train(Amtrak doesn't count))Don't have the money or parents refuse...(Never ever is redundant. It's just never) Ackshually, Amtrak does count lol. But I have performed this. And well…. Amtrak > Commuter Trains, but Commuter Trains have their place for bringing commuters to places.

-Be an expert on Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, when I have the programs that is... Not an expert, but I know how to use PS. I have lost passion for InDesign and Illustrator though

-Blog/Vlog more. I find it fascinating, though I found it fascinating ever since I had Twitter back in 2009. Check my channel, I have been doing this shit. And Twitter…and maybe that old new thing called Instagram. Didn’t get into Vine, or TikTok though.

-Tech Reviews. I have videos, never had the chance to post it on YouTube. I has slow upload speeds here at home. Check my channel. I have done a few, but I am not that great. I do have to plan out scripts so I can provide a cohesive review. Also, you managed to get gigabit internet after moving out (yes you did move out).

-Skits. Produce Videos with either friends or cousins. Skits will make us famous...and hope its not impromptu. Less skits, more gameplay and group play. Check channel

-Practice more on Photography. Close but no cigar. I’m surprisingly decent with both a smartphone camera (technology has improved a lot in the past 11 years) and a DSLR. I have learned the ways of at least taking a decent photo compared to others, that’s for sure.

[Updated 2022] I'll ramble about what I have, and a few reasons why I use each one, and maybe that'll inform your decision a lil better.

short answer: get something that fits your budget, use it for a while, get a second one if you realize the first isn’t very ergonomic for your needs.

Tablet with Display. Drawing purposes. For me that’s the Cintiq Companion 2 but since they are no longer in production, feel free to look up your preferred specs within the cintiq line, or purchase a Huion/other company display tablet for less; brand doesn’t matter as long as it works. Pros of being able to see what you’re doing: more confident putting down strokes, more intuitive. Cons: depending on setup your head/arms may be at a strange angle

One small no-display tablet ($60). A staple. Mine in particular is a Wacom CTH 470 I got in... 2011? I've shoved at least 15k hours on this. Would absolutely go into a period of mourning if this ever went out on me. ANYWAY the reason I like this is because it pairs really well with a monitor setup for optimal ergonomic sitting. Your head can stay level as you work. Having a no-display tablet also works well for my vectoring work in adobe illustrator. I have touch sensors deactivated so it only tracks my pen; this is very helpful for making sure the program doesn't make errant marks. I have hand issues (developed last year, after multiple years of drawing all the time) that put me in a lot of pain if I am at a Bad Angle for long enough. I would absolutely rec setting up at least one workspace with Optimal Ergonomics to preemptively not have to go through the crisis of "what if my body can't do my livelihood" and the physical therapy and so on. Doesn't have to be this one; just whatever works for your body. Downside for non-screen tablets is that the learning curve is steeper initially.

iPad Versatility and size. Can be used for many things/good for travel. It’s very light and the procreate default brushes are VERY GOOD at simulating traditional media. People can use it as their main computer depending on the requirements of what they do. Definitely a thing many artists use; I have not bc I got used to photoshop & PCs; when I travel I go with a laptop & a sketchbook.

The iPad Pro at first glance is an upgrade in every way. So, is it a solid replacement for your daily driver laptop? The answer is, it depends.

Any person can use any device they want as their daily driver. It really just depends on what you’re using your tech for. The 2018 iPad Pro brings a lot to the table as far as capability, and more than meets requirements for just entertainment purposes. This doesn’t really answer the question though.

With the introduction of iPadOS, a gap is bridged in the world of mobile device to PC capabilities. Being able to use my iPad to enter the desktop version of a website is really just the start of long list of improvements in Apple’s new iPad software. External hard drives, multiple displays, improved multitasking, the list goes on. With iPadOS, your basket is definitely full. File sharing, conversions and overall work convenience seems to be the name of the game in the companies latest updates.

We’re working with 4GB RAM, 120hz refresh rate and a 29.37 watt-hour battery, these are some of the hard specs on the device. Beating that in a tablet is hard to do, and chances are, unless you spent more than $1,000 on your laptop, you’re still not beating it. Plus, it comes in an LTE enabled version. Meaning no connecting to hotspots, no searching for unsecured public wifi, just getting work done when it needs to be done. Or play. Which by the way is incredibly attainable with all day battery. Not to mention, the portability of a device such as this for as powerful as it is untouched by any other device, including Apple’s lineup of MacBooks.

Now as far as the cons… Let’s just say there aren’t many, but it varies from person to person as to what they were expecting to buy. Limited mouse support, loosely fitting type cover keyboards without trackpads, and impossible lap placement. These are the issues you will encounter if you buy and iPad Pro with the intent of replacing your laptop. Now, as far as value goes, I think keep a few things in mind. At the time this was written, what you’re looking at is $799 for the 11in version that is WiFi only enabled, and if you’re looking for LTE enabled, tac on another few bucks to bring it to $949. Aside from the pricy accessories you will need to complete a mobile workhorse, such as your Folio Keyboard, and maybe a mouse, this to me is a reasonable price considering a few things. The first being that this is Apple we’re talking about. Their products sell themselves, and within reason, at any price that they want to. Second, this is the iPad reinvented. New OS which yes is available on all iPads, though you can utilize is most with this model. The performance of this device than what your average consumer needs typically, and I don’t think it can be beat for the price. So value, depending on your needs, could be a pro, or a con.

Though the iPad is years ahead of its time at this point, Apple has made it clear that it sells tablets, laptops, desktops, and phones. Not one size fits all, generic devices. For me, that is perfectly fine for the time being.

To wrap it all up, you absolutely can replace your laptop with an iPad Pro, you just need to be expecting the right things. If you’re looking for great portability, above average performance for daily tasks and entertainment, and flawless software within its bounds, then look no further. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a program intensive, Final Cut Pro handling, color accurate beast…maybe try again in a few years. The iPad Pro for now is a day to day productivity and entertainment pro, and I think that for now, that’s all I can ask for it to be for such a reasonable price.

Abhinav Lal: Zomato Gold

I’m going to nominate my Zomato Gold subscription as my tech purchase of the year. You may say, “Hey, that’s not really tech, is it?”, and I’d mostly agree with you. But, hey, it’s a premium offering by a consumer tech platform and seeing that I’ve reaped benefits several times over its cost already, I’m nominating it.

If you’d recall, Zomato earlier this year started Gold on delivery as well, making it rather decent value for money as long as you have participating restaurants in your neighbourhood. I got a 12-month subscription for Rs. 1,800, and since this was during Zomato’s anniversary celebrations, I also got five Rs. 200 cashbacks on delivery orders, bringing its cost down to Rs. 800. I recouped that in two dine outs — and have been using it for delivery as well.

As for my wishlist last year, it included a virtual reality headset, but I’ve been unable to convince myself to take the plunge on a mid-level offering. Maybe this year we will see a reduction in prices as the tech becomes more mainstream.

At the start of the year, I was looking to buy a Sena 30K for my daily + weekend rides. After some thorough research found out that it won’t be able to survive the monsoons here. True to what I’d predicted over 300 days ago, my tech wishlist stayed empty for all of 2019. Of course, I cheated and browsed through sales like any bargain-loving human, but I was never enticed to hit the buy button. That doesn’t mean I didn’t purchase anything. I picked up an iRobot Roomba 600 series at the start of the year and a Mi Air Purifier 3 towards the end of the year. One was a present, and the other a necessity — have you seen the data?

But I wouldn’t say I’d recommend either. If you’re looking for a robot vacuum or an air purifier, I’ve realised it’s best to stay away from entry-level products.

The Roomba is good at cleaning, but it’s very dumb. I live in a 3BHK and given how frequently I’ve to interact with it during cleaning, it really stretches the definition of the word “robot”. As for the Xiaomi one, it seems to do the job, but I don’t trust its AQI readings even though it has a new sensor. So without a separate air quality monitor, there’s no way to tell how good a job it’s doing.

My favourite tech product for 2019 then? 404 Not Found. Sorry for wasting your time, …again.

This year I got a decent deal on the Google Home Mini during the Big Billion Day Sale on Flipkart. It was available for Rs. 2,299. I bought it just for casually listening to music at home. Also, the fact that it can work as a Bluetooth Speaker is a cherry on top for me. It has certainly been the best purchase in 2019.

I am a die-hard smartphone enthusiast, which is why I like to upgrade to a new smartphone every year. So my favourite tech purchase of 2019 is the iPhone 11 Pro.

To recap, I haven’t had great experiences using an iPhone. I have had two iPhones in the past, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 7 Plus. And with the iPhone 11 Pro, I was a bit skeptical before purchasing it because of my experiences with iPhones and the exorbitant prices the current Apple phones come with. But I was simply swayed away by the looks of the device. Unlike many people out there, I really like the triple-camera design at the back which makes it stand out from every other phone out there. And, the stainless-steel frame which you don’t get to see in flagships from other manufacturers. Moreover, the phone’s performance is top-notch, battery life is great, and the cameras are also a step-up from the last generation.

It has been almost 3 months since I purchased the iPhone 11 Pro, and I have to say I am really enjoying the iOS experience on this device. Looking forward to the iPhone 12 Pro or whatever Apple decides to name it.

Even though smartphone prices have continued to go up with each passing year, I am yet to increase the budget that I had set for my smartphone purchases years ago. Hence, with just Rs. 30,000 to spare for my new smartphone, LG G7 ThinQ caught my eye. LG isn’t the most popular smartphone maker around; in fact, you will be hard-pressed to find LG smartphone owners these days. But, in my opinion, the company’s flagships are often some of the best value-for-money phones around if you are fine with waiting for a few months after the phone’s launch in India and don’t want to go for a Chinese smartphone brand.

Bought in the start of this year, the LG G7 is yet to disappoint me. The phone packs some impressive specifications for an older smartphone and is very easily going to last me another year. Having said that I do hate the massive screen but sadly that is a reality of the Android smartphone market right now, and the phone’s cameras aren’t great.

With Mi LED 10W smart bulb as my only other tech purchase, there is little competition for LG G7 ThinQ for my favourite tech purchase this year.

I didn’t spend a lot of money on tech products this year, I’m going to end 2019 with a lot still left on my wishlist. But I did upgrade my smartphone this year. I switched from an iPhone 7 Plus to the iPhone XR, after spotting a decent deal online.

It seems like a decent upgrade to me. I like the battery life on the iPhone XR, but I miss the physical home button and Touch ID. I like the fact that it has support for an eSIM as a secondary connection even though I don’t really need one. I do love the camera though, nothing Pixel-like but since I only capture photos for Instagram and Snapchat, it gets the job done.

I often do some work while commuting. Checking for new emails or responding them while on-the-move is quite feasible through a smartphone. But I usually spend my travel time in writing new feature pieces or transcribing recent interviews that both a compact PC-like machine. I do carry my work laptop, but in the recent past, I observed the need for an even smaller device that I can take with me in most of the places. I found the iPad as an early solution. However, I ended up purchasing a Microsoft Surface Go.

Since the Surface Go provides me with the full Windows experience, I can not just open apps that are limited to iOS (read iPadOS) but also access all major software packages that I used to have on my desktop or work laptop. The portable design of the Surface Go also makes it an easy-to-carry machine and the optional keyboard adds productivity. Likewise, the touchscreen experience on the device is also on par with my iPhone. The only thing that lacks here is the battery life that gets exhausted in five-six hours of regular use. Nevertheless, there is a USB Type-C port that supports the Power Delivery (PD). So I use a compatible power bank for charging on-the-go.

Did I actually need it? Not at all. Was it a good impulse buy? Absolutely! My previous iPad no longer receives iOS updates, I get to play high-end games, and the huge screen is just glorious. You can have a full-sized A4 page up, which is great for reading and especially for sheet music. Creative apps such as Synth One really feel transformed on the bigger screen and the stereo speakers are a revelation too. Moreover, it’s so light that I can just take it anywhere. Now to find an equally good deal on a keyboard cover…

This one doesn’t support 4K videos, but I have no qualms about it because of the expense of the amount of data that will be needed should I raise the video quality that much.

I may have gone a little crazy this year with my tech purchases. My first one was an iPhone XR back in April, when the big discounts and cashback offers began. An excellent device with more than a day-long battery life which even rivalled the iPhone XS. Plus, the fact that it was available in India at an effective price which was even lower than what it was being sold for in the US, made it a no-brainer.

My second-best tech purchase has been the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K. The reason it makes the list is because I managed to snag one during this year’s Black Friday sale, for just $25! (roughly Rs. 1,800). It’s also a lot faster than the standard version, supports faster Wi-Fi and of course, can do 4K streaming.

My last big tech purchase of this year is the Sony PlayStation 4 Pro. Yes, I’m aware that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) will be launching around this time, next year, but like every new console generation, the true potential of it will most probably only be realised till a few years in the console’s lifecycle. By then, we’ll also have newer revisions which may fix any teething issues of the launch models, possibly a Pro model and most importantly, more affordable prices out by then.

Pro tip: If you’re looking to get the PS4 Pro, keep in mind that the only official bundle with India warranty is the one with the extra controller. All other bundles on Amazon and Flipkart of the Pro that include free games, are direct imports and don’t have a valid Indian warranty.
