despite the emotional highs and lows that have come the last few days, there’s something exciting about the time they spend together in this new ‘spacious’ version of their dynamic. frankie’s spent so much time sitting on her hands to resist the urge to grab him that her fingers feel numb, and when the night comes and she’s allowed to coil herself around him, it takes every bit of willpower to avoid mounting him the second the lights go off. being near him feels dangerous and somehow forbidden, like being back at casa only without the guilt of it all, but the boat party has her feeling less restrained, inhibitions and that impulse to contain herself lessened by the smell of sea breeze and sambuca. the four of them, ( her and miles, josh and jenny ) are heading to the bar, heat of his palm against hers when she feels a goblin instinct curdle in her stomach. in a split-second she’s tugging him away from the others, finger pressed to his lips to silence him in case he gives them away, running on the balls of her feet to avoid the cowboy boot clack as she pulls him down the deck behind her. she feels like they’re that scene in titanic, the two of them tearing through the galley and down into the engine room, or wherever it is they end up going on their way to that party below decks.
it isn’t until she’s got him shoved up against the side of the boat, one hand fisting in his shirt, the other tangled in his hair, her lips a breath away from meeting his that she realises diving head-first into something physical without really checking where his head’s at probably isn’t her smartest idea. maybe he doesn’t want her to kiss him — maybe his head’s with eden — and here she is shoving him against the wall of a boat like some hormone-riddled teenager. “ god…” she hesitates, laughing at her own desperation, forehead knocking into his. the swell in the air between them is palpable as she lowers herself from her tiptoes back down onto the balls of her feet, releasing her death grip on his hair to slide it down his neck to rest at the small of his back instead. “ sorry, i just… i really wanna kiss you, but i know i’ll get so fuckin’ carried away if i do. ” but she wants to get carried away with him. lips purse. it’s a tough battle. she waits for her heart rate to return to its resting pulse, but it still feels like a jackrabbit in her chest, a mess of nerves and adrenaline and need. “ i’ve been trying so hard not disrespect your space. like i’m that guy from greek mythology and staying away from you’s the huge ass rock i gotta haul. ” untangling herself from miles, she pushes back to lean against the railings ( it’s almost giving gabriella ) and considers the fact that maybe miles would be railing her by now if she hadn’t pulled away, although it feels unlikely. “ we should probably ‘ talk’ ... ” she says it in air quotes. “ less crossed wires that way. ” still, when are they gonna get the opportunity to cross this off the bucket list again ? “ unless... ” grinning, she takes a step closer, hand reaching out to slide over the waistband of his trousers, “ you want me to get carried away. ”

“ one, two, three, go ! ” strawpedoing her hit flask of half-rum, half-coke hadn’t exactly been on frankie’s bucket list for the night, but unfortunately the bouncers at the clubs are like, super thorough, to the extent where even her hide-it-beneath-your-jacket-and-carry-your-jacket-over-your-arm technique had failed to hustle them. the whole time her and max are downing their drinks, the beady-eyed bouncer is watching them, his face like an egg with two microscopic buttons and a slit in the shape of a mouth. everyone in europe is so stoic, and not even in a quirky wes anderson kind of way, just like straight up rude. feels like her, max and val are the only people around here who know how to have any fun. “ we’re with val, ” she says to the bouncer again, as he checks his list, consults the other security guy, and says something into his earpiece. “ valerie, y’know ? she’s the dj. ” frankie mimes spinning a disk, complete with the hissing sound of a record scratch. “ no, i don’t know her surname. max, do you know her surname ? ” who the fuck in the villa bothered to learn each others surnames ? miles and josh called had her castro, in that cute frat bro kinda way, but other than that… she’s got no chance. “ i don’t even know your surname, ” she tells max, point blank, before turning back to the bouncer. “ look, please just ask her, okay. tell her it’s frankie and max. we’re literally staying at her place right now. ” her attempts fall on deaf ears. they’ve queued for twenty minutes only to be turned away, and it feels like getting to the turnstiles of the superbowl only to find you’ve been duped into a ticket scam. “ fuck sake, ” frankie cusses, five minutes and two drags of max’s cigarette later, round the side of the club, as the two of them scan for an alternative route in. “ why are european bouncers such cunts. is it our accents ? ” it’s definitely their accents. feels like that episode of flight of the conchords when jermaine and bret experience racism for being from australia, when they’re not even from australia, they’re from new zealand. “ i wish we hadn’t shotgunned all our alcohol. ” @orumad

setting : day 23 / anywhere in the villa / idk lunchtime mayb

walking into the villa, there’s a hard balance to strike between being audacious and being downright obnoxious. few before her had managed to find the sweet spot, but frankie has a habit of finding the chink in the chain mail, she would take a turning fruit and dig her greedy fingers into the soft marrow of the bruise, feel the pulp of it split against her hands the way she would pop zits for the sheer thrill of it. although nothing could quite beat riding in on a speedboat, alcohol sweetens the deal, bottle raised towards the ( lack of ) roof as she strides in after her second date, dropping callie’s arm to let out an excitable holler. “ hello girls, guys, gays and theys. i come bearing gifts, ” ( namely champagne, although she’s bordering on tipsy from the two dates already ) “ who wants to be my best friend ? ” sucking her thumb into her mouth for no other reason than showmanship, she drops her free hand to the neck of the bottle, and untwists the wire cage, middle finger of the hand that holds the bottle pressed into the divot at the bottom. years of working in hospitality have prepared her for this moment, if she fucks it, it’s not only a major L on love island but an embarrassment to her profession. she’s still wearing her cute little captain’s hat. frankie twists the bottle and the cork pops with a loud bang, foam spilling from the top which she bends to catch in her mouth. spray gushes down her throat, over her face and down her neck where she fails to catch it, sticky with champagne and giddy with laughter when she lifts the bottle in the air. “ alright, who’s first for a sip ? it’s four am somewhere... ”

What seems most curious about the yippies today is the way they mixed hard left politics with a deep appreciation for pop culture. Abbie Hoffman announced that he wanted to combine the styles of Andy Warhol and Fidel Castro. Jerry Rubin dedicated Do it! not just to his girlfriend but to "Dope, Color TV, and Violent Revolution." Even when praising a form of mass culture that had earned some grudging respect from the late-'60s left—rock 'n' roll—Rubin's list of musicians who "gave us the life/beat and set us free" included not just raucous originals like Jerry Lee Lewis and Bo Diddley but Fabian and Frankie Avalon, commercial confections that most lefty rock intellectuals disdained as insufficiently authentic. In one chapter, Rubin complained that if "the white ideological left" took over, "Rock dancing would be taboo, and miniskirts, Hollywood movies and comic books would be illegal." All this from a self-proclaimed communist whose heroes included Castro, Chairman Mao, and Ho Chi Minh.
It's not that the yippies swallowed pop culture uncritically. (Hoffman kept a sign attached to the bottom of his TV that said "bullshit.") It's that they saw the mass media's dream-world as another terrain to fight in.[72]

it’s a red-hot florida summer, tide low, coast sandy, and the temperature’s already pushing ninety. saturday was meant to be her day of rest and relaxation in a rare week off from the yachting season, but so far all she seems to do is pick up the slack left by her brothers. she should be out in the van, tearing down the highway with dolly blaring from her tinny speaker, flowers in her hair and incense hanging from the mirror. she could even be tanning on an aft deck off the adriatic coast right now, a shammy in her hand and the sun on her back, had she booked on for another week of work rather than taking a so-called ‘holiday’. instead, she’s trapped inside uncle joe’s crab shack covering for leo while he plays hooky to nail some chick from arizona, because technically she owes him one, and when a castro makes a promise they take that shit to their grave. but fuck if she doesn’t wish she were someone else right now. take that cute curly-haired chick with the killer smile, for example — probably a holiday maker, sat with a bunch of other fresh faces, laughing at kai who runs the whiskey cove paddle board tours — looks like she’s having the time of her life, a stress-free existence, where all she probably has to worry about is what colour bikini to wear and whether or not she’s gonna let kai get the home run tonight. why do girls like that always end up with douchebags like kai. it’s fucking unfair. still, frankie’s trying to be a force of positivity, live laugh love in the moment and remind herself of everything there is to be grateful for, but it’s hard when it’s hot enough that it feels like sweat drips from the ceiling like stalactites, and her supposed ‘break’ has been pushed back so many times that she’ll likely have to go without. whatever. four’s only like, an hour away. she can manage ‘til then.
can you check on table fifteen, it’s the big one with the out-of-townies, kelly’s asking her, loading frankie with another two plates before she can leave the kitchen, wince bitten in by her teeth. feels like being a stewardess all over again, but there’s a reason she’d made the switch to deck crew. she’s not good at saving face and sucking back how she really feels when faced with opposition. she can’t just lie back and think of england, never had a mother who stuck around long enough to teach her the secret handshake that held the code to being a girl. “ can’t you just get bodhi to do it ? i’m already covering, like, five tables, and those guys look super picky. ” kai’s always asking for like, the weirdest thing on the menu, and then adding on a load of vegan, gluten-free, soy-free extras, as if he wants you to fuck up his order so he can write you a bad review on tripadvisor. the only thing worse than working when you’re supposed to be on holiday is serving people your age who are actually out having fun. “ fine, whatever. i can get their drinks orders. but then i gotta take my fifteen minutes. let me just run these lobsters over to table twelve. ”
somewhere in the short commute, the instructions get lost in translation, frankie instead standing before the HBO remake of forgetting sarah marshall at table fifteen, all of them fresh from the surf and smelling of saltwater. “ two surf ‘n’ turfs ? ” frankie asks, ignored at first, then clears her throat, asks for the second time, cutting through the conversation a little more coarsely. “ anybody order these surf ‘n’ turfs ? ” these plates are fucking hot. her eyes are kinda pleading with the curly girl on the end, and it’s only when she feels a tap against her back and a child’s voice that says, uh, i think those are ours... that frankie realises her mistake. “ balls. ” embarrassed, she whips around on her heel with such a voracity that there’s no time to slow her roll, and there’s a body where an empty space is meant to be, an edgar wright smash cut to something wholly unexpected, like that scene where regina gets totalled by a bus. she smacks straight into bodhi, now outfitted in the contents of his two seafood platters, her own spread of steak and lobster flying into the customer behind her’s lap, too startled to even hear the gasps of the hawaii five-o extras or the kid that’s covered in chowder. prawns hanging from her uniform, frankie turns back to the to the customer ; a lobster now sits like a cat in her lap and beef dripping clings to her shirt. “ holy fuck... i am so sorry. like, you have no idea. ” kelly’s gonna put her fucking head on a roasted halloumi and vegetable skewer. cautiously, frankie plucks the lobster from her lap. in her head, he grows an animated mouth, tells her cheer up, kid, it might never happen. well it fucking has happened. the most ridiculing moment of her life, thus far. “ please don’t tell my boss, i’m not even meant to be working today, i’m just covering for my stupid... jesus, why am i saying this ? you don’t care about my idiot brother. ” foot in mouth disease. sighing, frankie drops down, and begins plucking the fragments of plate from the floor where the sad steak sits in a pool of it’s own trimmings. “ um, i can like... cover your meal ? ” she says, her eyes scanning back up to the surfer chick covered in surf ‘n’ turf, the full florida experience. “ or your drinks, if you’re just drinking. ” though it’ll probably cost her the entire day’s pay check with the shit they’ve been drinking. it’s like margaritaville on crack. “ look... can you just... tell me how i can make this up to you ? because if i don’t then i’m not gonna sleep tonight. i’ll just keep seeing your face and bolting upright in bed like that rigged little dummy kid in monsters university, y’know. ”

Das Land des Che
Das Kapitol
Quer durch Kuba
Eine Reise über die Insel ist immer noch Abenteuer pur. Das beginnt in der Hauptstadt Havanna und seinen unüberschaubar verwirrenden Gassenlabyrinth, den Plätzen, Boulevards und Avenues. Karibisches Inseltreiben, großstädtischer Straßenverkehr und dörflicher Charakter, all das macht das (Über-) Leben hier unvergesslich. Kolonialpaläste und baufällige Häuser, Prachtvillen, Kasinos und triste Hinterhöfe, farbenfrohe Umzüge, Bars – und immer und überall Musik. Havanna ist eine tanzende Stadt, eine ewig feiernde Geliebte, eine pralle Schönheit der Superlative.
In den Gassen Havannas
Auch wenn die Machthaber Kubas immer Kubaner waren, standen sie doch stets unter fremdem Protektorat. Ob Estrada Palma (erster Staatspräsident) oder Fulgencio Battista, die Karibikinsel hing am Gängelband der Yankees. Auch die zu Beginn des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts importierten Gangster Meyer Lansky, Al Capone oder Francis Albert „Frank“ Sinatra, genannt „Franky Boy“ machten sich im Selbstbedienungsladen Havannas breit – machten krumme Dinge und klauten, was nicht niet- und nagelfest war. Nachhaltig veränderte sich das Leben in Kuba erst 1959 mit Fidel Castro und Ernesto „Che“ Guevarra und ihren wagemutigen Freunden.
Gefangen in der Vergangenheit
Die neuen politischen Führer legten dem Land einen jahrzehntelangen Konfrontationskurs zur benachbarten Supermacht USA auf und gingen auf Kuschelkurs mit dem andern Ende der Welt, der Sowjetunion. Das Wettrüsten und der damit einhergehende Machtpoker zwischen Ost und West brachten im Oktober 1962 die Welt an den Rand des Abgrundes. Die Kuba-Krise wurde zum Sinnbild des Kalten Krieges. Nach dem Zerfall der UdSSR blieb Kuba zunächst sozialistisch, entschloss sich zum Überleben und schwenkte um zu einer sehr gemäßigten Privatwirtschaft. Raoul Castro, der Bruder des ehemaligen Revolutionsführers legte schlussendlich mit Präsident Obama den historischen Konflikt der Länder bei.
Das Überleben in Kuba ist seither mäßig fortschrittlich und ist den Auswirkungen des überlangen Wirtschaftsembargos, der Vertrauenskrise des Volkes zu seinen politischen Führern und den vielfach enttäuschten Erwartungen geschuldet. Dem Inselstaat geht es gut und – auch nicht. Man sollte das Land bereisen und Devisen im Land lassen, die letztlich der Bevölkerung zugutekommen: Privatunterkünfte, Familienrestaurants, landeseigene Autovermietungen, Einkaufen am Markt, kurz, lokale Gewerbetreibende unterstützen. Kuba hat alles, was ein Land reich macht. Aber es wurde ausgeblutet, von Kriminellen und falsch verstandenen „Ismen“. Letztlich war der Kommunismus dem Land wirtschaftlich ebenso abträglich wie es früher der Klassenfeind, der Kapitalismus war.
Che
Unterwegs in Havanna
El Capitolio – Offizielles Wahrzeichen Havannas, das an das Original in Washington erinnert. Diktator Machado weihte es unter amerikanischer Protektion ein. Es steht unter keinem guten Stern: Auf dem ehemaligen Sumpfgebiet wurden in alten Tagen Sklaven untergebracht!
La Habana vieja – Die Altstadt: Pittoreske Häuser, Plätze, Gassen. Südsee-Flair und Salsa Musik. Zigarren und Rum. Und: Jede Menge Bars… Man kann sich nicht satt sehen, trinken, tanzen!
El Malecon – An der überirdisch schönen Strandpromenade schlendern und die Welt eine gute sein lassen. Menschen, Trubel, Straßenmusikanten, und der wahrscheinlich spektakulärste Ausblick auf das berühmteste Abendrot der Karibik – das gibt’s hier mmer noch, und wohl lange noch. Hoffentlich!
The Partagas Cigar Factory – Die riesige Zigarrenfabrik liegt im Herzen Havannas und ist einen Besuch wert – auch für Nichtraucher!
Mit der Pferdekutsche durch das Gassengewirr entlang der Bahia de la Habana, im Chevie über die Boulevards. Die alte, karibische Dame hat mehr Leidenschaft und Sinnlichkeit zu bieten als so manch andere Weltstadt!
Musik
Und dann geht’s hinaus, durch Außenbezirke, über breite Ausfallstraßen, quer durch tropische Urwälder, malerische Flüsse, über abenteuerliche „Autopistas“, auf denen einem so ziemlich alles entgegenkommt, was Gott je erschaffen hat: Straßenkreuzer, Radfahrer, Pferdefuhrwerke, altersschwache LKW’s, Schulbusse, und, als wäre es nicht schon genug, jede Menge Fußgänger. In Kuba ist man wahrlich nicht alleine unterwegs. Der Verkehr gleicht hier einer Lotterie – man weiß nie, was kommt. Über die Insel zu fahren ist Abenteuer pur. Das beginnt schon bei der Orientierung. Am besten, man prägt sich die Topografie des Landes und die vier Himmelsrichtungen ein. Wer will’s schon alles wissen? „Keine Details, das Stück!“, lautet ein alter Theaterspruch. Die Bühnenkünstler müssen es wissen. Eine gute Straßenkarte würde bereits an der Straßenbeschriftung scheitern – denn die gibt es nicht. Man landet in jedem Fall in der Pampa. Was soll’s, die ist hier so schön, wie nirgendwo. Die effektivste Methode ans Ziel zu kommen, heißt hierzulande „Autostopp“. Das funktioniert. Und todsicherer als man denkt.
Die Revolution
Am Rand jeder Überlandstraße stehen Heerscharen von Reisenden. Man hat die Qual der Wahl - meist habe ich Mütter mit Kindern als Co-Passagiere gewählt. Man hält an, fragt wohin die Reise gehen soll, und schon ist man genau dorthin unterwegs. Es spielt es schon für eine Rolle, ob man zuerst ins Valle de Viñales, dem sagenhaft schönen Tal an der Westküste Kubas reist, oder doch in Richtung Trinidad, in die entgegengesetzte Richtung. Hauptsache man landet irgendwann, irgendwo. Und Quartier zu finden ist ein Kinderspiel, ob in „Casas Particulares“ (Privatquartiere) oder in altersschwachen Provinzhotels – beides probiert, beides zu empfehlen.
Das Haus der Väter
Unterwegs in Kuba
Pinar del Rio – Verschlafenes Nest in der Nähe des traumhaft schönen Vinales-Tales, der Tabak-Hochburg Kubas!
Cienfuegos – Koloniales Nest am karibischen Meer. Pferdekutschen, Meeresfrüchte, verträumte Märkte und… jede Menge tropischer Regengüsse!
Trinidad – Katzenkopfpflaster, Musik, zwei Museen und der wunderschöne Dorfplatz „Plaza Mayor“. Hier träumt man sich hin und weg!
Santa Clara – Die Stadt des Che Guevarra. Hier siegte die Revolution, der Weg der Guerillas nach Havanna öffnete sich. Kuba errichtete seinem großen Helden hier ein Mausoleum. Seither steht hier eine der größten Fremdenverkehrsattraktionen des Inselstaates: Das Grab des großen Che!
Santiago de Cuba – Die Seestadt ist eine der ältesten des Landes. Hier begann in den Fünfzigern die Revolution von Che, Fidel und den Anderen!
Im Oldtimer-Paradis
Manchmal lohnt es sich auch, männliche Passagiere einsteigen zu lassen. Weshalb? Ich bin gewiss schon unter so manch widriger Bedingungen durch ein fremdes Land gereist, nirgendwo aber hatte ich so viele Autopannen wie in Kuba. In einer Woche waren es gezählte vier (!) Platte, hervorgerufen durch eingefahrene Nägel. Warum ausgerechnet die Straßen, auf denen ich unterwegs war, gespickt mit rostigen Hindernissen waren, weiß ich nicht. Vielleicht handelte es sich um eine Art späte Rache am Weißen Mann? Meine autostoppenden Mitfahrer jedenfalls erwiesen sich allesamt als Kavaliere – bei nicht einem einzigen Reifenwechsel musste ich selbst Hand anlegen. Und da sage noch einer, Kuba sei kein sicheres Reiseland. Es wirft einem zwar jede Menge Hindernisse in den Weg, die Kubaner räumen sie aber auch eigenhändig wieder weg.
