The Council of Agde, in Languedoc, passed a resolution commanding the church, in all cases of necessity, to undertake the defence of those to whom their masters had, in a lawful way, given liberty.. This naive combination in her of the child and the thinking woman, this childlike and absolutely genuine thirst for truth and justice, and absolute faith in her impulses — all this lighted up her face with a fine glow of sincerity, giving it a lofty, spiritual beauty, and one began to understand that it was not so easy to gauge the full significance of that beauty which was not all at once apparent to every ordinary unsympathetic eye. Metamorphosis, a police escort and the Midnight Fremont Summer Solstice Parade
I kneel down on the deck of the float, sun cloaking my shoulders in warmth. I am absorbed in the action of stitching blue thread through pale blue netting. The stitches are rough but regular. Slowly I make my way across the chassis floor, following the rough line Dave has cut in the shape of butterfly wings, occasionally making mistakes, breaking and tying off the thread, then rethreading and starting anew along the same line.
I am helping to make wings for ‘Metamorphosis’, a butterfly-inspired float. The float will house Dave and Jon’s long-running band, The Shamaniacs, while they play peculiar reggae-rap-psychedelic-rocknroll for two hours as they are pushed through Fremont with thousands of people lining the streets, under the Solstice sun. The float is human-powered, although a generator will project the band’s sound.
The float is pale green and flat, with a pull bar at the front and a push bar at the back that are wrapped in foam and duct tape for comfort. Dave and Jon will be relying on friends and family to push them along the length of the parade. A clear plastic U-shaped gazebo stretches over the float, and handmade paper flowers dangle and decorate all the support beams. I ziptie plastic cutout butterflies onto the front post. One of them is a Camberwell Beauty. It has a smear of free chocolate across the center – I think it’s been in the hands of Jon’s seven-year-old daughter.
We work through the evening, surrounded by bustle and creativity. Up the street, a gigantic Sasquatch is taking shape. His hand now waves slowly, just like a dull giant, but his flesh and eyes glow with colour and thought. Next to us people paint bright yellow and glitter on wood. People stick faces of police brutality victims onto a float which resembles a four-poster bed opposite us. Some kids practice their stilt walking. Outside the Powerhouse, the Art Studio which is vomiting all this creativity out into the street, guys with waxed mustaches and quizzical green eyes use power tools to build the centerpiece float. Designed by Pacific Northwest artist Carl Smool, it will have four giant gargoyle heads atop fabric skyscrapers – the ‘Corporate Gargoyles’. Yesterday evening, I spent hours stipple painting one of the heads to resemble stone. Carl creates papiér mâché pieces of art for activism. Somehow he is overseeing everything.
Jon’s daughter, Samantha, was the inspiration for Metamorphosis, as she flitted about the solstice last year in butterfly wings. She runs around in a black leotard, occasionally coming back to check on progress.
I am privileged to work on the float and get to know Dave and Jon a little. Jon plays me the Shamaniacs’ music. It is unashamedly exuberant and upbeat and I say so; Jon looks at me knowingly and nods. “I am joyful, I’m very joyful,” he says. He is. He talks constantly about life in Seattle, where he has ended up, things he considers achievements, ideas, channeling spirit energy. “I opened the first vegan restaurant – truly vegan restaurant –in Seattle. We didn’t even serve coffee ‘cause we thought it was bad for you.” I find comfort in his take on things. He is wildly positive with childish enthusiasm, but just a shade of self-reflection adds an edge. A girl needs an edge to know where to look. It’s like a horizon.
Dave is wild-haired and thoughtful. He has a quieter, focused energy. He talks of science and ideas too. “I think the next scientific revolution is that we are going to find we are all interconnected”. Wow. A girl likes a conversation to get her teeth into.
Dave and Jon’s old, old friendship is touching. Dave needs a box to sit on during the parade – his detached cruciate ligament won’t let him stand on shaky or wobbly things, like a solstice parade float! He looks around for Jon, and calls to him to make him a wooden box. Jon goes down to the Powerhouse, finds the right tools and pieces of wood, brings them back and makes him a wooden box. Is there any purer expression of friendship than making a friend a box to sit on?
The night gets darker and the wings are complete. We mount them onto the rods and hoist them. Other band members arrive, smoke, eat pizza, tell stories of busking. The floats surrounding us take shape – a rotating silver cone covered in inflatable sharks; a red robot with cake costumes; Sasquatch has hair. The preparation and frantic clean-up is so good natured. Jon and I agree that the community art process is the same fix, somehow, as spending time out in the hills or forests. Soul-making.
We gather outside the Powerhouse and the heads of the Fremont Arts Council explain to us with megaphones and cheering what happens now. It is Friday night, the night before the big Solstice Parade day. The floats are to be moved to the parade head location on Leary Way, in what is known as the Midnight Parade. This involves all the floats being drawn down through Fremont in the middle of the night with a police escort. There is palpable excitement. I hadn’t planned on being there so late, but I agree to stick around and help push Metamorphosis down through to the parade head.
Cops on motorbikes have arrived. Night has fallen and the flashing blue and red lights gleam off their white helmets and off the glittering floats.
As it turns out, to my joy and fortune, the Shamaniacs’ float is last in the main parade tomorrow, which means it is first out on the midnight parade. The safety vests check the Avenue up and down. The cops line up either side, Danny DeVitos in shades and uniforms straddling their bikes. Two organizers pull out a giant boombox on wheels, begin playing Motown, and we wheel out Metamorphosis onto the road. We go slowly down the hill, and each float comes out one by one behind us, with whoops and cheers. I look back when we are stopped at the traffic lights to see this ghostly parade of peculiarities which cannot really be made out in the night light. There are enough hands pulling/pushing Metamorphosis that Joe, a busker and band member, and I, sit on the front of the float, at the head of the parade, laugh and dangle our legs off the side, as we make our way through the late night neighbourhood streets. I couldn’t have stopped grinning if I’d wanted to.
People spill out of bars and cheer as we go by. The cops’ lights continue to flash. The organizers with the boombox at the head announce the parade will be taking place tomorrow. Joe pulls out a selection of small percussion instruments from his backpack and presses some into my hands. We make rhythmic noise in time with Stevie Wonder blasting out into the street and laugh at Jon’s mad dynamism. He and his wife Betsy are pulling the float and Jon is stamping, leaping, getting off on the energy. The whole experience is surreal. We pass by my office building, which has a large Saturn planet atop the roof. Tonight, the Saturn is lit up. We see the clear yellow sliver of moon straight ahead in the west.
We reach the parking lot that is the head of the parade and pull Metamorphosis in to her overnight resting place. The other floats follow suit and people toast with plastic cups. We gather and breathe. I try and express my gratitude for sharing the experience. Betsy nods knowingly too. I feel like I have found some of Fremont’s blood.
*******
The next day, I gather my housemates and friends, we dress in green, and make our way out into this sunny day to Fremont. The streets are now full of daygoers, children, street stalls, dogs, tents and free sunglasses. We stop at the Brouwer’s Café for pre-parade Dutch courage. Then I feel like we should head back up to the parade head, to join our parade crew.
I was asked if I’d like to be in the parade when up at the Powerhouse working on the floats, and thought, why not. I have roped my friends in to being green ‘money bunnies’. This is the crew that surrounds the Green Hat float. A giant green top hat turned upside down. The money bunnies wear green bunny ears, a white rabbit comes out of the hat, and we poke sparkling green hats on sticks into the crowd for donations to Fremont Arts Council. We have the boombox to explain to the crowd how the parade happens every year and ask for donations, and we also have our own ragtag marching band. A little apprehensive about getting my friends to fundraise – no-one likes asking strangers for money – they are wonderful, game, and it soon becomes apparent that it’s pretty fun. People are very generous. It’s fun to interact with the crowd. They clearly love the parade. Women put five dollar bills in my hat and blow kisses.
Lily dances and shimmies her way through the whole thing. Somehow Kristin hops up onto the boombox and dances as it is maneuvered down the open streets. I have no goddam idea how that happened because that thing was almost impossible to push in a straight line, so who knows how she managed to stand and dance on top of it in actual motion.
It is blazing hot and we are soon thirsty, but this energy keeps us going. For sure I have felt Solstice fever the whole weekend. I couldn’t concentrate on a thing on Friday. The fever gets channeled through a creative act, like stipple painting a gargoyle head or stitching a giant butterfly wing. This is the culmination, the celebration.
Around us are naked cyclists body-painted rainbow colours, samba dancers, marching bands, overtly sexual hoopists, musicians and photographers. It’s a colourful riot.
We finally get to Gasworks Park, the parade finale, and shore up the green hat, now full of dollar bills. We get free beer tickets and t-shirts. We go claim our beers and sit in the beer garden. Everyone is talking to everyone. Half the people outside the beer garden are half naked. I proudly show the housemates the Toilets sign I painted. We watch someone climb bare-handed up a pole on the gasworks tanks and then proceed to do parkour to the top of one of the giant silo ladders.
“I love that we can see a family and a baby in a stroller,” says Suz, “and then right behind them is a woman with painted gold tits.” What’s weird is how normal it is. Some dude is wearing nothing but sheep bones. Vertebrae down his front, and a ram’s skull slung around his waist cradling his penis.
The sun fades from its sixteen hours on Seattle. The Solstice fever abates. Now we are into the lengthening and the ripening, with a harvest on the horizon.

According to a post by ‎Maque DaVis in the Fremont Arts Council Facebook page, a woman took the sign at 5:30pm on Tuesday (Nov. 6). “She broke off the post, and put the rest of it and the signs in her car and drove off,” DaVis writes. There’s a video of the theft, which has been handed over to Seattle Police.
The sign, located at the intersection of Fremont Ave N and N 35th St, points to a great array of places, including Rio De Janeiro (1225km away), the Sunday Market, the Fremont Troll, and Noogie (Top of Head).
...
“A reward is offered for any information leading to the recovery and arrest of thief,” DaVis writes. If you have any information about the incident, contact the Fremont Arts Council at 206-547-7440.

A1 CLEANING OF OMAHA OFFERS EXCLUSIVE DEEP CLEANING SERVICES To help out the clients in Omaha, Deep Cleaning brings forward a professional checklist to help you customize your appointment.
• Windows (inside) • Baseboard (vacuuming and scrubbing) • Cleaning of all doors • Thorough vacuuming of all floors (including under beds, moving furniture if not heavy) • Fridge (inside lining) • Oven interior and exterior • All kitchen cabinets and countertops • Scrubbing tiles and counter surfaces in the Bathroom
HOW WE DEEP CLEAN Being a certified provider of top-level cleaning services, we always strive to satisfy and surpass our clients’ expectations. Our services are tailored to your specific home needs. Our general Deep Cleaning process involves: • Spick-and-Span Bedroom Your bedroom is where you start and end your day, thus keeping it neat and organized is crucial. Having a clean bedroom can also impact your moods when you wake up and give you momentum for a busy day. Our deep cleaning services for your bedroom includes:  Dusting surfaces, ceiling, fan blades, wall art, doorknobs, and every hard-to-reach corner.  Cleaning the doors/door frames and air vents.  Professional vacuuming and extensive mopping of the bedroom floor.
• Sparkling Kitchen Untidy surfaces, greasy cookers, unpleasant odor, and dirty sinks aren’t a picture you’d want for your kitchen. Getting this area in order will not only promote healthy living but also make cooking fun. Our dedicated team of cleaning experts will:  Scrub off tough greasy stains and scorch marks on your oven and other kitchen appliances.  Clean the sinks, faucets, and crevices on the kitchen countertops and walls.  Wipe down the kitchen counter, cabinets, fixtures, and glasses. Our job isn’t done until your kitchen is elegant and shiny.
• Spotless Bathroom Tough stains, soap scums, mold, dirty towels, and smelly curtains are unpleasant and unhygienic. Our maid services will rid your bathroom of life-threatening bacteria to promote a healthy living environment, especially if you have children. For a sparkling clean bathroom, we’ll:  Get rid of all the soap scum and mold in your bathroom.  Remove stains and disinfect the shower, sinks, toilet bowl, and shower heads.  Sanitize your towels and curtains.  Clean the walls, tiles, and doors.  Wipe down all surfaces. Our deep clean services aim to turn your bathroom into a spotless, luxury environment for long refreshing showers.
WITH DEEP CLEANING, YOU’LL FEEL THE SENSE OF WHOLENESS. YOU’LL KNOW EVERY BOOKSHELF, DISPLAY, AND FIXTURE HAS BEEN SPECIFICALLY CLEANED.
This could mean wonders if your home hasn’t been kept up with for a long period of time. Deep Cleaning also known as thorough or comprehensive cleaning means cleaning things that you normally wouldn’t clean on the regular basis. For instance, baseboards, ceiling fans, blinds, etc. are items you customarily clean when enough buildup of dust, smudges, or scuffmarks become noticeable. Other household items that fall into the Deep Cleaning category, but are not exclusive, are light switches, both sides of doors, vent covers, and pictures and frames. For some new clients, the service can be misinterpreted with First-time cleaning which applies to Basic cleaning being done the first time. However, first-time cleaning isn’t as thorough as Deep Cleaning, meaning that your home would simply be brought up to a level of cleanliness so that we may maintain it with reoccurring basic cleaning services. Deep Cleaning is a service of its own. We’ll clean every nook and cranny in your home while you still live in it. We’ll pick up, move, and clean under furniture, climb ladders to clean ceiling fans and vent covers, and get on our hands and knees to clean baseboards. It’s a lot of work, but we love the final product.

TIRE RECYCLING TIRE REMOVAL TIRE PICK UP LINCOLN NE LNK Hauling Junk & Moving Tire Recycling
The images of a small child swinging from a tree on a tire sound wonderful, but unless you have the need for more than one tire swing, it may be time to give us a call. How many tires do you have laying around, stuffed into a corner of a garage, or even just sitting by the trash bins in the hopes that the local garbage collector take them? In most situations, they're not accepted in your regular waste service. Don't let those old tires get in your way or become an environmental hazard. No matter where you live, tires don't go to the dump. If you’ve got used ones to get rid of, LNK Hauling Junk & Moving can help you with tire recycling. We pick up all kinds of tires from cars, bikes, trucks, and construction equipment.
WHY TIRE RECYCLING IS IMPORTANT
Tires are some of the worst landfill offenders due to their durable composition and sheer volume, which has resulted in many landfills limiting the amount of tires they accept. When tires are placed in the backyard or even in a junk pile at the landfill, they become an environmental problem. That is because they can trap methane gas in them, which can the leak through the landfill liners used or any surface and pollute the soil as well as the ground water. That's why it is so important to avoid sending those tires to the dump. Fortunately, tire recycling is becoming more prevalent to help pick up the slack, with old tires being turned into asphalt, shoes, basketball courts, playground flooring, and even art. They can also become a crumb rubber . In some cases, old tires can be reused for tire-derived fuel, or TDF, which is a highly effective alternative to fossil fuels for power. And, it produces a higher amount of energy than either oil or coal. At LNK Hauling Junk & Moving Tire Recycling, we believe in taking what's old and making it useful again. Spare yourself the hassle of disposing unwanted tires and give us a call instead. With proper tire recycling, we can help protect the environment and give you back your space.

Howard’s quarter-century on the Copperstate
(Editor’s note: During the month of April, the Journal presents a series of stories about vintage rallies and vintage racing. Today, Howard Koby looks back at his years covering the Copperstate 1000 vintage sports car rally for this publication and others. If you have a story about your participation in a vintage rally or race that you’d like to share, please email us at [email protected].)
About 25 years ago, I happened to be in Phoenix and was heading to the Phoenix Art Museum when I stumbled upon a closed-off downtown street with an array of beautiful vintage and classic cars.  They were lined up for what looked like the start of a road rally.
Being a full-blown “car geek” and automotive photojournalist, I had my trusty battery of Nikon (film!) cameras in my car. I hurried back to get the tools of my trade, then rushed back to the action.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
Copperstate cars rally through the tall pines near Flagstaff in northern Arizona
The answer was the Copperstate 1000 Road Rally. Instinctively, I started taking photographs.
The Copperstate 1000 takes place in April and puts a group of passionate car enthusiasts and their pre-1973 vintage sports and grand touring cars on a thousand-mile adventure through the Arizona desert and, at higher elevations,  pine forests.
After making contact with the organizers, the Men’s Art Council of the Phoenix Art Museum, I hit the road on my first Mercedes-Benz (the title sponsor at the time) Copperstate 1000 in 1997, on assignment for the late Mike Cook, editor of the Jaguar Journal (club magazine).
I was pleased to learn that the rally served as a fundraiser for the Phoenix Art Museum and the 10-90 Copperstate Foundation, which provides emergency benefits to families and dependents of officers injured or killed in the line of duty.
Every year as a safety measure, a handpicked group of Arizona DPS motorcycle officers provides an escort, riding ahead of and behind the rally cars.
‘Field of Dreams’ at Tempe Diablo Stadium
Usually, there are about 80 to 90 rolling automotive works of art on the Copperstate that engage with the beautiful scenery after blasting off from the Phoenix area. In recent years, at least until the pandemic, the starting point has been Temple Diablo Stadium, spring training for the Los Angeles Angels baseball team, which is turned into a “Field of Dreams” car show.
Rallies need routes and as the Copperstate route book once noted, “Trust in Motherhood, Apple Pie and your Route Book.” The book not only guides the Copperstaters but each year introduces them to a different and challenging route.
One year it might lead them to the northern part of the state, starting up the Beeline Highway toward Payson and beyond, or it might take them through Prescott, or to historic Route 66 in Kingman and on to Oatman, where Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their “honeymoon” at the Oatman Hotel in 1939.
Sedona, The Grand Canyon and Monument Valley, even visits into Utah and Nevada, have provided spectacular scenic runs that left me breathless.
Southern routes take the cars through the grassy ranch lands of Patagonia, Nogales (at the Mexican border), into the unmatched beauty and serenity of the Saguaro National Park, and Tucson, known as the Old Pueblo.
Barry Meguiar fills the 1932 Duesenberg from the Imperial Palace collection
The late Leon Mandel, who was publisher of AutoWeek magazine, participated in many Copperstate rallies and referred to this “Orgy of automobility as the ‘Great American Car Revival,’ where participants share a belief that no time could be better spent than in an interesting car on a mean road in the company of like-minded people.”
For many years, the event honored a Grand Marshal, including the likes of Bobby Rahal, Brian Redman, Phil Hill, who drove his 1930 Pierce-Arrow Cab in 1996. Also, Lyn St. James, Stirling Moss, Bob Bondurant and Barry Meguiar, who arrived with Richie Clyne in a 1932 Judkins-bodied Duesenberg coupe from the Imperial Palace Auto Collection in Las Vegas.
Meguiar and Clyne had their hands full piloting the 6,000-pound machine, working its vintage brakes while descending from 9,000-foot elevations.
“We used everything… brakes, gears, parking brake to keep from losing it.” Meguiar said. “But we had a great time and a good workout!”
In 2003, I covered the Copperstate (Bondurant was Grand Marshal) for the old Car Collector Magazine and landed the cover with Randy Reiss’ fabulous fly-yellow 1962 Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta SWB. This late-series steel-bodied Prancing Horse with a booming V12 engine, Borrani wire wheels and outside Monza filler cap was one of my all-time favorites, although not for riding shotgun with Reiss, who drove it at unmentionable speeds.
The Leventhals’ 1953 Ferrari 340 MM
As I reminisce about wonderful memories of the Copperstate, I am reminded that it is not a competitive rally but a lifestyle event and celebratory exploration of the Arizona outback with the exquisite scenery of the American Southwest. It’s like a field trip for grownups, with catered lunches delivered in the middle of the desert.
Another favorite vintage machine that has been on many Copperstates is Rick and Nancy Rome’s exciting 1955 Kurtis 500 Swallow Coupe that was originally prepared for racing by Mickey Thompson to run the La Carrera Panamericana in 1955 (only to have that event canceled). The car still maintains its original Lincoln 317cid “Y” block engine with front disc/rear drum brakes and torsion-bar suspension.
And of course, there’s Michael and Katharina Leventhal’s stupendous 1953 Ferrari 340MM Le Mans Spyder that has run the Copperstate several times.
“It’s a beast with amazing torque and brute power,” Leventhal notes. “Visually, I just love to look at the car… it’s like moving art.”
Stephan Norman and his 1928 Bugatti in Las Vegas
In 2005, the tour stepped into Las Vegas, and I immediately thought of getting the provocative 1928 Bugatti Type 44 Roadster owned by Stephen Norman to downtown on Fremont Street for a photoshoot with all the glittering casino lights as a backdrop. Norman agreed and we roared off.
When we arrived downtown, the “one-off” Bugatti caused quite a stir with 100s of tourists that had never seen such a car. “What kind of car is that?” bellowed out from the crowd.
My favorite route was the 2007 journey that included two scenic wonders — the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and Zion National Park in Utah. I’ll never forget, as our wagon train traveled through six climate zones from the Sonoran Desert up past the San Francisco Peaks and through the solitude of Navajo reservations and reaching the geologic beauty of Zion National Park, the sight of Jess and Eddie Marker as they came whizzing by in their ultra-light 1969 Lotus Type 14 Elite.
After 25 years attending the Copperstate, there are too many favorites to mention, so hopefully the selection of photos will speak for themselves.

EPISTOLARY NOVELS
This week we are leaping on the news that the beloved novel, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society is being adapted for a major motion picture by Netflix. Shaffer and Barrow’s epistolary novel (a tale told through letters) reminds us of the particular power over readers epistolary novels have so we’ve selected some of the best from our catalog. These contemporary and classic works move from the era of parchment to email, and may just inspire the letter writer in you:
THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL SOCIETY by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.
FOLDED NOTES FROM HIGH SCHOOL by Matthew Boren
A status-obsessed senior unexpectedly falls for a freshman because of his Danny Zuko audition in their high school’s production of Grease in this outrageously funny epistolary novel set in 1991.
DEAR COMMITTEE MEMBERS by Julie Schumacher
Jason Fitger is a beleaguered professor of creative writing and literature at Payne University, a small and not very distinguished midwest liberal arts college. His department is facing draconian cuts and squalid quarters, while one floor above them the Economics Department is getting lavishly remodeled offices. His once-promising writing career is in the doldrums, as is his romantic life, in part as the result of his unwise use of his private affairs for his novels. His star (he thinks) student can’t catch a break with his brilliant (he thinks) work Accountant in a Bordello, based on Melville’s Bartleby. In short, his life is a tale of woe, and the vehicle this droll and inventive novel uses to tell that tale is a series of hilarious letters of recommendation that Fitger is endlessly called upon by his students and colleagues to produce, each one of which is a small masterpiece of high dudgeon, low spirits, and passive-aggressive strategies.
LETTERS FROM SKYE by Jessica Brockmole
A sweeping story told in letters, spanning two continents and two world wars, Jessica Brockmole’s atmospheric debut novel captures the indelible ways that people fall in love, and celebrates the power of the written word to stir the heart.
THE ANTAGONIST by Lynn Coady
A piercing epistolary novel, The Antagonist by Lynn Coady demonstrates all of the gifts that have made its author one of Canada’s most respected young writers. Here she gives us an astonishing story of sons and fathers and mothers, of the rewards and betrayals of male friendship, and a large-spirited, hilarious, and exhilarating portrait of a man tearing his life apart in order to put himself back together.
ATTACHMENTS: A NOVEL by Rainbow Rowell
Beth Fremont and Jennifer Scribner-Snyder know that somebody is monitoring their work e-mail. (Everybody in the newsroom knows. It's company policy.) But they can't quite bring themselves to take it seriously. They go on sending each other endless and endlessly hilarious e-mails, discussing every aspect of their personal lives. And then… "Hi, I'm the guy who reads your e-mail, and also, I love you . . ." Also available in a Spanish edition.
DADDY-LONG-LEGS AND DEAR ENEMY by Jean Webster
One of the great novels of American girlhood, Jean Webster's Daddy-Long-Legs (1912) follows the adventures of an orphan named Judy Abbott, whose letters to her anonymous male benefactor trace her development as an independent thinker and writer. Its sequel, Dear Enemy (1915), follows the progress of Judy's former orphanage, now run by her friend Sallie McBride, who struggles to give her young charges hope and a new life. Also available as a young readers’ edition.
ELLA MINNOW PEA: A NOVEL IN LETTERS by Mark Dunn
Ella Minnow Pea is a girl living happily on the fictional island of Nollop off the coast of South Carolina. Nollop was named after Nevin Nollop, author of the immortal phrase containing all the letters of the alphabet, “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” Now Ella finds herself acting to save her friends, family, and fellow citizens from the encroaching totalitarianism of the island’s Council, which has banned the use of certain letters of the alphabet as they fall from a memorial statue of Nevin Nollop. As the letters progressively drop from the statue they also disappear from the novel. The result is both a hilarious and moving story of one girl’s fight for freedom of expression, as well as a linguistic tour de force sure to delight word lovers everywhere.
A WOMAN OF INDEPENDENT MEANS by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey
A bestselling sensation when it was first published by Viking in 1978, A Woman of Independent Means has delighted millions of readers and was the inspiration for the television miniseries starring Sally Field.
From the early 1900s through the 1960s, we accompany Bess as she endures life's trials and triumphs with unfailing courage and indomitable spirit: the sacrifices love sometimes requires of the heart, the flaws and rewards of marriage, the often-tested bond between mother and child, and the will to defy a society that demands conformity.
84, CHARING CROSS ROAD by Helene Hanff
This charming classic love story, first published in 1970, brings together twenty years of correspondence between Helene Hanff, at the time, a freelance writer living in New York City, and a used-book dealer in London at 84, Charing Cross Road. Through the years, though never meeting and separated both geographically and culturally, they share a winsome, sentimental friendship based on their common love for books. Their relationship, captured so acutely in these letters, is one that has touched the hearts of thousands of readers around the world.
PAMELA OR, VIRTUE REWARDED by Samuel Richardson
Fifteen-year-old Pamela Andrews, alone and unprotected, is relentlessly pursued by her dead mistress’ son. Although she is attracted to young Mr B., she holds out against his demands and threats of abduction and rape, determined to defend her virginity and abide by her own moral standards. Psychologically acute in its investigations of sex, freedom and power, Richardson’s first novel caused a sensation when it was first published, with its depiction of a servant heroine who dares to assert herself.

There is a 7-ton statue of Vladimir Lenin in Seattle. It’s 16-feet tall, made of bronze and has resided in the city’s eclectic and very free-spirited Fremont neighborhood since 1995. Tourists flock to see it.
This week, protesters did too.
In a twist on the recent calls to remove Confederate monuments, Seattle’s Lenin statue has attracted renewed scrutiny this week after an impromptu protest by activists supporting President Trump, who has endured blistering criticism for insisting “both sides” — that is, the white nationalists who staged their rally in Charlottesville and the demonstrators who opposed them — share equal blame for the mayhem that was caused. The violence, and Trump’s argumentative response, has fomented division within communities across the country.
On Thursday, Mayor Ed Murray joined critics in seeking the removal of a monument that has long been a subject of curiosity and controversy, saying the deadly violence last weekend in Charlottesville should serve as incentive to remove all symbols of racism and hatred, “no matter what political affiliation may have been assigned to them.”
Murray, a Democrat, also has taken aim at a Confederate memorial in the city’s Lake View Cemetery. Both are privately owned.
“We should never forget our history,” he wrote in a prepared statement, “but we also should not idolize figures who have committed violent atrocities and sought to divide us based on who we are or where we came from.”
As Kurt Schlosser wrote this week for Geek Wire, the Lenin protest “seized on the chance to point out left-leaning Seattle’s supposed hypocrisy” while debates take place in other American cities over whether to remove memorials honoring figures celebrated by the Confederacy and those who condoned slavery.
Lenin led Russia’s Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 before founding the country’s Communist Party. Countless suffered and died during the civil war that ensued, a fact highlighted by those who think the statue should come down. As one observer mused on Twitter, “He only killed a few million people. Why isn’t the left tearing down his statue?”
The sculpture’s path to Seattle has little to do with Lenin’s communist ideology, according to local accounts.
It was created in Slovakia by artist Emil Venkov between 1978 and 1988, when it was installed in the city of Poprad, not far from the Polish border. A year later, as the Soviet Union broke apart, the statue was taken down.
It was discovered in a junkyard by Lewis Carpenter, an American visiting from Washington state, who was said to be so enamored with its artistry that he leveraged his mortgage to finance the purchase and ship it home to Issaquah, 20 miles east of the Seattle. It was moved to Fremont after Carpenter’s death in 1994 (Venkov died in June) and now occupies a small parcel maintained by the local business community.
Carpenter’s family still owns the statue and, according to the Seattle Times, has been hoping to sell it for many years. The asking price is $250,000.
Here’s the thing about Fremont: It’s a little wacky — in the sense that it’s a diverse and unique community that’s known for celebrating the solstice with a parade of naked cyclists. A lot of hippies and artists live there, and they’ve dubbed Fremont “center of the universe.”
The statue is a fixture in their community, one they festoon with holiday lights each December. It’s “tangible proof,” Fremont residents explain on their website, “that art does outlive politics.”
Here’s more:
“If art is supposed to make us feel, not just feel good, then this sculpture is a successful work of art. The challenge is to understand that this piece means different things to different people and to learn to listen to each other and respect different opinions. From an artist’s standpoint, all points of view are valid and important.”
So what happens next?
It’s possible Seattle’s city council will take up the issue in coming weeks, if only to debate whether the legislative body should be on record as having taken a stance, said one city staffer who spoke with The Washington Post on the condition of anonymity.
“We’ve taken up less-consequential issues in the past,” the staffer said, noting that Seattle is a municipality keenly aware of its status as a “progressive bastion,” and of the example it sets for other municipalities in the state and across the country.
Ultimately, because these memorials reside on private property, both would need to be removed by their owners, voluntarily. So Murray, Seattle’s mayor, has few options other than voicing his opinion.
“At this point,” Murray’s office told The Post, “there are no next steps imminent.”
>leftists stop to defend the statue in terms of artistic merit and press the challenge to respect different opinions
gee its almost as if it reads like a conservative defense of a Robert E. Lee statue
Tumblr media
we also should not idolize figures who have committed violent atrocities and sought to divide us based on who we are or where we came from
-The genius seattle mayor without realizing that any and every national leader is guilty of violent atrocities.
By this logic, the libraries named after barack obama should be renamed out of respect for his victims because he bombed weddings in yemen.
also the statue should stay. No monuments should be torn down.

MOLD CLEANING SERVICES FROM   OMAHA HOUSEHOLD SERVICES
Water is the giver of life, but it can also be one of your greatest enemies. Water leakage can lead to the growth of mold, which can cause much damage to your home or office premises. When mold becomes the breeding ground for irritants and allergens, it can also have long lasting effects on the health of everyone who happens to inhale the microscopic mold spores. A simple plumbing leak can wreak havoc on your premises in a matter of days, as standing water presents a great environment for mold fungi to thrive. Although a small amount of mold will not hurt most people, mold can multiply rapidly if left unchecked and can cause respiratory problems, allergic reactions and even nervous system breakdowns. Don’t underestimate the health hazards caused by mold. Allow   Omaha Household Servicesto expertly attend to your mold problem right away.
MOLD AND MOISTURE
Mold thrives particularly well in humid environments, which is why Singaporean business owners have to be particularly vigilant of the risks and how to prevent it. The key to preventing mold is to watch out for plumbing leaks, which causes standing water – even the smallest leak can have devastating effects over time. Mold thrives on water so you must remove any excess and unwanted water. Additionally, you should attempt to keep the humidity factor at 45 or below to prevent mold from growing. When you notice the tell-tale musty odor of mold around the site of a plumbing leak, it is important to call in the plumber to repair the water leakage promptly, otherwise all your attempts to get rid of the mold will be in vain. Mold grows rapidly and becomes increasingly more difficult to remove if left unattended. It can travel via the air and tends to stick to all kinds of surfaces, including the ducts and vents of your air conditioning unit. Mold is ever-present and must be addressed as swiftly as possible.
ACTION STEPS TO REMOVE MOLD
1. If you believe that your building has been infected with mold for a long time, you might need to consult a healthcare professional to assess your employees. Mold can have devastating effects on people’s health. You will also require expert mold cleaning services to thoroughly inspect the building and take the necessary steps to remove mold and ensure that the premises are safe for use.
2. Contaminated water can also cause mold to grow more rapidly. Call a plumber to test your potable water supply and to install a water filtration system. 3. Do not operate your air conditioning system if you suspect that it may be moldy. The last thing you want is mold spores spreading virally throughout your offices via the air conditioning system! 4. Call in the mold cleaning experts. Our mold-busters at   Omaha Household Services will assess the property to ascertain which areas have been affected by mold. They will use state-of-the-art equipment to identify, contain and isolate mold growth, especially since it is often invisible to the naked eye. Our mold cleaning team will then take the steps necessary for preventing further damage and spreading of the mold. The cleaners can even capture and contain mold that floats around in the air. This is especially significant, as it prevents the onset and spreading of allergens which are harmful to humans. All surfaces – furniture, floors, air conditioners and the like will be specially cleaned and sanitized so that the mold is permanently removed. When we have concluded our mold cleaning services at your premises, you can rest assured that you and your staff are left with a safe and healthy mold-free environment.
