On Saturday I headed south again, this time to Fyriplaka, for kayaking. We got so lucky with the weather. There was no wind, no breeze whatsoever, and the water was like glass. We headed east through some caves and around to Gerakas (which I'd visited on the sailing day), where we stopped to explore the 'hot springs.' Basically, due to ongoing geothermic activity, there are spots along the corner of the beach and a bit further around where the sand is hot underwater and the water is warmer due to the presence and release of sulphur. You see the bubbles rise up from the sand with a snorkel mask on. And the sand can burn - in some patches it was impossible to stand.

We paddled some more, went for a swim in a cave, and came back around to Tsigrado beach. The water in the caves goes this kind of luminescent turquoise as light gets in, pretty magical. And the contrast between the blue of the water and the red in the rocks at Fyriplaka is stunning.

After kayaking I tried to lay on the beach for a bit but it was just too hot. No breeze and no shade meant the sun just beat down. I poked around the shore for a bit, picking at and examining the pebbles and rocks on the beach - they were so many different and unusual colours, cus of the volcanic nature of the island. Reds, yellows, purples, clear rocks and white or cloudy ones, and even greens.

After another siesta back at home I headed up to Plaka, one of the towns perched above Adamas, and wandered around. Walked up to the castle (Kastro) at the top of the hill and took in the views. Stopped in at a bar called Utopia for a cocktail and the sunset. Explored the whitewashed streets, patted some cats, and scooted home for dinner.
