Laura Adorkor Kofi (died 8 March 1928), commonly known as Mother Kofi, was a Ghanaian minister and activist associated with the Universal Negro Improvement Association. She was assassinated while preaching in Miami, Florida.
Laura Adorkor Kofi (surname variously spelled as Kofy, Koffey or Kofey) was born near Accra, Ghana, possibly into a royal family. A plaque at her gravesite gives the title "Princess", and 1893 as a birthdate; other sources put her birthdate much earlier. Some versions of her early life also say that she experienced visions and voices which encouraged her to go abroad and teach Africans in America. Her detractors in her last years spread rumors that she was born "Laura Champion" in Athens, Georgia; but religious history scholar Richard S. Newman compiled evidence to confirm that she was, in fact, Ghanaian by birth
Kofi moved to North America around 1918, and lived in Detroit for several years. She worked as national field director for Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association, touring the deep South and attracting large crowdsas a "prophet" (in her own estimation), with her base in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1927 she founded the African Universal Church, with herself as its head ("Warrior Mother of Africa's Warriors of the Most High God" was her self-chosen title). Garvey soon decided that she was building too much of a following independent of his cause, and announced, "This woman is a fake and has no authority from me to speak." He also encouraged his followers to have her arrested for fraud.
In March 1928, Laura Adorkor Kofi was shot while speaking from the pulpit at a church in Miami. She died from the gunshot wound to her head; a Jamaican follower of Marcus Garvey, Maxwell Cook, presumed to be her assailant, was immediately beaten to death by the congregation who witnessed the attack. Ten thousand people are said to have attended her funerals in several cities; her remains were dressed in robes of black, green and red, placed in a bronze casket, and entombed in a mausoleum in Jacksonville's Old City Cemetery.
Her congregation called a new pastor from South Africa, Eli Nyombolo. They continued her work as the Missionary African Universal Church. In the 1940s, on the outskirts of Jacksonville, they built a small settlement they called "Adorkaville" after Mother Kofi. (Most of Adorkaville was demolished by the city in the 1970s, after Nyombolo died and the church experienced infighting and schism.)
There is a small collection of research materials related to Laura Adorkor Kofi at the New York Public Library

Preview of Ménage à Trois Part Deux
I'm feeling generous (also productive af), so here's an unedited preview of Chapter 1. Full chapter coming in January! Make sure you read the first part by then!
T’Challa tapped his long, slender fingers against the side of his leg, an annoyed grimace tightening his handsome face. He stood still in his quarters while his tailor put the finishing touches on his suit for the night, but internally he was getting more and more agitated as the time ticked on. Despite his mood, he couldn’t help but admire himself in the mirror. The embroidered black ensemble covered his streamlined body like running water, and the locs that usually dusted his jawbone were twisted back into an elaborate bun.
A knock at his door eased his mind momentarily, until his younger sister swept into the room in her suit that mirrored his, just with a gold scarf draped across her shoulders. T’Challa’s own shoulders slumped with disappointment, but he managed to pivot to positivity quick enough for Shuri to not catch his reaction.
“Look at you copying your big brother,” he teased her.
Shuri rolled her eyes as she crossed the room, but still dapped him up.
“Whatever. I wear it better than you.”
“Who lied and told you that?”
“Your wife.”
His jaw tightened.
“Where is she, anyway?”
“Late.”
“I should have known,” Shuri chuckled. “She was late her own wedding.”
T’Challa grunted in response, and Shuri noticed the annoyance in his voice. She put up her fists, playfully tapping him on the shoulder with a weak jab.
“Come on, bro, she’ll be here. Chill out.”
“She’s two hours late.”
“Was there a problem with the opening?”
“No. According to Okoye and Bahati, she just could not be pulled away from conversing with the crowd.”
“You know how Zora is. Or has it been so long that you’ve forgotten?” Shuri asked him dramatically, with a hand to her chest.
“Just wait until you meet someone. You’ll finally understand why being apart is so painful.”
“It’s been two weeks, T’Challa. You’ve gone away for longer on missions before.”
“Being the one left at home makes the time move slower.”
“I guess.” Shuri shrugged and plopped down on the end of his bed.
“Something bothering you?”
“Just your mother.”
T’Challa laughed.
“What did our mother do this time, Shuri?”
The princess groaned and fell backwards onto the bed.
“She won’t stop trying to set me up.”
“Who is it this time?”
“Nakia’s younger cousin, L’Nela.”
T’Challa’s face scrunched up disapprovingly. Even the tailor stopped moving the lint roller across the king’s chest for a moment to look at the princess in disbelief before continuing his job.
“She’s not your type.”
“You know that. I know that. All of Wakanda knows that! But mother is horrible at lesbian matchmaking. Bast bless her for trying, but I don’t know how much more of this I can take, brother.”
“I will talk to her.”
“Well, actually, I came to see if Zora would-“
T’Challa’s beads chimed with the tone he had reserved for his love, and his communication bead rolled down into his palm.
“Speak and she shall appear,” he grumbled as Zora’s hologram smiled up at him apologetically.
“I know, I know, I’m late-“
“Two hours, Zora?”
“I couldn’t just cut off the Ghanaian ambassador and ignore the excited children, T’Challa.”
“Brother’s been in a sour mood all day,” Shuri tattled from her spot on the bed, and Zora chuckled before her picture cut out momentarily.
“What are you doing?”
“Getting dressed-“
“Just now?! It’s a three hour ride!”
“I needed a nap!”
“I tried to tell her,” snarked Bahati, now promoted to Zora’s assistant, as she helped her into her attire for the evening.
“Not you both ganging up on me! I can be late to my own damn event if I want to, and need I remind y’all I’m not even that late. We’ll be landing in a minute.”
“A minute?” T’Challa asked for clarification, raising a skeptical eyebrow.
“More like ten, kumkani wam.”
“Thank you for your honesty, Bahati.”
“Thank you for your honesty, Bahati,” Zora mocked. “You know, sometimes I think she’s your favorite.”
“It’s because she listens.”
“Employees are paid to listen, wives are not.”
“Don’t I know it,” T’Challa smirked, and Zora mirrored the expression.
“I’ll be there soon, love.”
“I’ll be waiting.”
Racing through the central African skies on the Royal Talon, Zora ended the call, and allowed the makeup artist to touch up her gold eyeshadow while Bahati zipped up the side of her backless black jumpsuit.
She knew she was pushing his nerves by running so far behind schedule, but Zora liked it when he was all worked up about one thing or another. Granted, that wasn’t actually her intention this time. She really did get caught up at the grand opening of the new Wakandan International Outreach Center in Accra, but she recognized that she should have planned for that possibility instead of booking a gala immediately after.
Zora sighed and eyeballed the beaded multicolored isicholo that sat on her vanity. Heavy truly was the head that wore the crown, especially on a day as important as this. After two years of working with T’Challa and foreign dignitaries to bring her vision to fruition, Zora was finally kicking off her student exchange program. One hundred teenage students, fifty from Wakanda and fifty from across the diaspora would trade places for a semester. Zora spent countless hours pouring over applications and hand-picking exactly who she thought would benefit most from the program, and now the diaspora students were coming to Wakanda for a warm welcome.
As exciting as all of this was, Zora couldn’t help but feel a little empty inside because in order to build relationships with the foreign dignitaries, she had to lie. Not only did she have to lie, but she also had to hide a piece of herself all because of their conservative sensibilities surrounding polyamorous relationships. They knew her as Zora Franklin, Queen of Wakanda and wife to T’Challa Udaku. What they didn’t know was that T’Challa wasn’t Zora’s only husband.

╰ cis woman , she/her ☆ 𝐎𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐔𝐏𝐎𝐍 𝐀 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄 … we’re introduced to NANISCA “ NAN ” ALBRIGHT , the 25 years old SERVER at THE PRINCESS AND THE PIE & ZIPPITY DOO DINER from enchanted falls who bears a striking resemblance to COCO JONES. the whispers in the wind tells us of their DUTIFUL and RIDGID reputation, that’s why the townsfolk often are reminded of the smell of freshly baked pastries , the jingling of change in pockets , poorly timed jokes and cherry chapstick slathered to lips that have never been kissed . they are often haunted by dreams of a life lived as TIANA ( PRINCESS & THE FROG )

CLICK HERE TO READ HER WANTED CONNECTIONS .
nanisca albright has always known one thing , if you want something you have to work for it , and from the moment she could dream she's ever had one . financial freedom . tired of falling asleep to the sound of her stomach rumbling at only thirteen years old she started selling the thing she knew best , food . starting with cupcakes and quickly expanding to include all manner of sweet treats nan was able to use the extra money this provided to start a garden for her and her mother . at sixteen she got a second and third job . often times spending all day working , sometimes even on her days off , all the while putting as much of her paycheck as she possibly could in savings in the hopes of one day buying her own restaurant and later a home . though all of that was placed on the back burner when her mom was diagnosed with cancer . all the money she'd saved was immediately diverted to nellie's treatment . despite all of her mother's protests , nellie would have much rather nan spent her money on her restaurant , but there's no way on earth nan is ready to face life without her best friend by her side .
。* ❪ 📂 › PERSONALITY.
on the surface you'd never know that nan has little to no interest in people . she's loud , funny , bubbly , charismatic and fun to be around . at least until she's off the clock. it can take a bit of time to get to know the real nan because she doesn't often feel inclined to speak to strangers , let alone get to know them , she's almost always working so she doesn't really see the point . most of the people she considers her friend went out of their way to get to know her and even for them , she has to remind herself to make an effort , otherwise she'd literally be alone all the time . in truth , she'd be just fine with that . since she doesn’t have siblings her friends have become an integral part of her family , because of that she’s incredibly generous nan is the type of friend who would bend over backwards to help you . tends to make little homemade gifts for her loved ones : think infused oils / lotions with your favorite scent , candles that she made with specific intentions just for you or bits of jewelry that she made .

Amaarae Album Review: Fountain Baby
(Interscope)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
“Take me out the streets,” sings Amaarae on “Princess Going Digital”. She combines call-and-response vocals--a touchstone of music since the beginning of time--with auto-tune, as if she’s truly moving to the digital realm. The contrast is a microcosm of the Ghanaian-American singer-songwriter’s persona, artistic and otherwise. On that song and on her terrific second album Fountain Baby, she explores pop music post-Internet without succumbing to the maximalist contemporary clichés of hyperpop. Steel pan drums rub elbows with sparkling synthesizers, glock samples with orchestral arrangements. At the center of it all, though, is Amaarae, flexing her money and her sexual prowess, but subdued enough to protect herself, aware of her own insecurities.
It’s all in the quotables: Fountain Baby is filled with moments of compensatory braggadocio. “Me and my bitch got matching titties / She got Fountain Baby tatted ‘cause she fucking with me,” she quips on the Clipse-sampling “Counterfeit”. “I do what I want, want so I can get my way,” she declares on “Sex, Violence, Suicide”. “Fake it till you make it,” she sings on “Water From Wine”, fully aware of the platitudinal status of the saying. Yet, you sense there’s something underneath the surface of the nihilistic hookups. “You think I’m feeling a way, it’s not like you love me / I know you don’t love me,” she sings on the harp-laden "Disguise”. On the standout “Sociopathic Dance Queen”, Amaarae waxes on the volatility of relationships over an instrumental that’s the sonic equivalent of a goth at the beach: knowingly out of place, but still cool.
Unsurprisingly, Fountain Baby succeeds most when Amaarae and her co-producers KZ Didit and Kyu Steed lay down knowingly unexpected sounds without care. From the horns and funky guitar licks of “Big Steppa” and the gorgeous acoustic guitar plucks of “Reckless & Sweet”, to the harp in “Disguise” and finger-picked guitar turned pop punk of “Sex, Violence, Suicide”, the songs on Fountain Baby effectively span genres. Amaarae’s voice itself is perhaps the ultimate instrument, whether high-pitched or in low register, sometimes switching between the two at a breakneck pace a la “Angels In Tibet”. The looseness of the whole album comes to a head on closer “Come Home To God”. The song illustrates a stripper who--you guessed it--comes home to God. Amaarae knows there’s all-encompassing autonomy, borderline holiness, in making your own decisions, whether or not you come to regret them. For an LGBTQ+ person like Amaarae in a country with draconian anti-queer laws--whether that’s Ghana or some areas in the United States--is that not the bare minimum, let alone something to aspire to?
