Bolivian Movies
Tumblr media
The Bolivian movie industry may not be as well-known as some of the bigger players in the global film market, but the country has produced some notable films and actors over the years.
Famous Names & Films
One of the most famous Bolivian actors is Reynaldo Pacheco, who starred in the 2007 film "La Teta Asustada" ("The Milk of Sorrow"), directed by Peruvian filmmaker Claudia Llosa. The film was a critical and commercial success and won the Golden Bear at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival. Pacheco has also appeared in several American films, including "Our Brand Is Crisis" and "The Dark Knight Rises."
Another Bolivian actor who has made a name for himself is Juan Carlos Aduviri, who starred in the 2010 film "Even the Rain" ("También la lluvia"), which was directed by Spanish filmmaker Icíar Bollaín. The film was an international success and won several awards, including the Goya Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Film Studios Bolivia
In terms of film studios, Bolivia has a relatively small industry, with only a handful of production companies. One of the most important is Cinenómada, which was founded in 2007 and has produced several award-winning films, including "Los Viejos" ("The Old Ones") and "El Corazón de Jesús" ("The Heart of Jesus").
Movie Snacks
When it comes to food, Bolivians enjoy a wide variety of snacks and treats at the movies. One popular option is popcorn, which is usually served with salt and butter, but can also be found in sweet flavors like caramel or chocolate.
Another popular snack is chicha, a fermented corn drink that is sweetened with sugar and flavored with cinnamon or other spices. It is often sold in plastic bags or bottles and is a refreshing choice for a movie beverage. Another popular drink is api, a hot beverage made from purple corn, cinnamon, and cloves, often served with a slice of cheese.
In addition to these drinks, Bolivians also enjoy traditional snacks like salteñas and tucumanas. These are baked pastries filled with meat and vegetables, similar to empanadas, and are often eaten as a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack. In movie theaters, they are sold alongside other savory snacks like chicharrón, which is deep-fried pork, and bolitas de queso, which are small cheese balls.
Other common snacks include chicharrón (deep-fried pork), salteñas (a type of empanada filled with meat and vegetables), and tucumanas (similar to salteñas but with a different filling).
Overall, while the Bolivian movie industry may not be as well-known as some of its counterparts, it has produced some notable films and actors and continues to grow and develop. Keep an eye out for this rising star.

If you’re like most pandemic-fatigued TV viewers who found unexpected joy in Apple TV Plus comedy original “Ted Lasso” in the last year, you’ll know that Sam Obisanya, the big-hearted player on the show’s fictional football club AFC Richmond, played by British-Nigerian actor Jimoh, stole the show in Season 2 with a scandalous storyline involving club owner Rebecca Welton (Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham). Raised in the U.K., the 24-year-old Jimoh won’t just be a key player in “Ted Lasso” next season: The charismatic Guildhall Drama School graduate can be seen in Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” and will also star in Amazon’s keenly anticipated thriller adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s novel “The Power.” — Manori Ravindran.

Arguably the brightest new star Hong Kong has seen in two decades, the 22-year-old Keung has already established himself as a charismatic singer and performer on stage, a talented actor and a sought-after target among advertisers for celebrity endorsement. Keung first caught the eyes of many when he was a contestant of ViuTV’s reality show “King Maker” in 2018. But he did not rise to superstardom in the city until he became the youngest person to win the coveted My Favourite Male Singer Award at Commercial Radio’s Ultimate Song Chart Awards in January 2021. The young star, together with his comrades of 12-piece boy band Mirror formed from the ViuTV show, rocketed to fame. Besides selling out their in-person concert series in May, Keung and Mirror have sparked new levels of fandom that now stretched to overseas markets. At a recent concert, Keung performed a medley of Cantonese pop classics, saying that he is determined to shoulder the responsibility of spreading Canto-pop to audiences outside of Hong Kong. In 2021, he appeared in TV series “Ink at Tai Ping” and “Sometimes When We Touch” and completed the filming of his big screen debut “Mama’s Affair,” in which he stars opposite Teresa Mo. — Vivienne Chow.

Rotolo’s tour-de-force debut performance as the titular character in Jonas Carpignano’s “A Chiara,” in which she plays a 15-year-old who gradually discovers that her close-knit family has ties to organized crime, has been eliciting critical plaudits all year. Variety described the 17-year-old actor as “radiant” in its review. Most recently, Rotolo picked up the best actress award at the Cairo Film Festival, where Emir Kusturica presided over the jury. Carpignano, whose naturalistic style involves working with non-professional actors, wrote the film for Rotolo and inserted elements of her real life into the screenplay, which could raise doubts about her ability in a different context. But the range she displays as Chiara, and the depth of her performance, leave many wanting to see more. — Nick Vivarelli.

Smit’s debut feature performance came just last year when she starred alongside Mario Casas, one of Spain’s most marketable leading men, in the award-winning thriller “Cross the Line.” She was quickly picked out with a Goya nomination for best new actress. This year, Smit’s talents went global as she starred with Penelope Cruz in Pedro Almodóvar’s “Parallel Mothers,” earning her another Goya nomination, this time for best supporting actress. In 2022, she will feature in Netflix’s sci-fi horror series “The Girl in the Mirror” before returning to the big screen in “Tin & Tina,” one of Spain’s most promising indies of the coming year. — Jamie Lang.

Ma Dong Seok, better known as Don Lee in Hollywood, started his acting career late in his thirties. Ma told the media he’d originally wanted to be a boxer but took up several odd jobs to make ends meet after his move to America. Ma was successfully casted for Korean action-comedy film “Heaven Soldiers” and gradually grew interested in becoming an actor. His breakthrough came through a supporting role in Korean zombie film “Train to Busan,” which propelled him to leading roles in “Derailed,” “The Bros” and “The Outlaws.” This year, that trajectory has taken Lee back to the States, where he made his Hollywood debut in Marvel Studios’ “Eternals.” Ma calls the step a matter of “good timing,” but his die-hard fans credit him with laser focus, a larger than life persona and the tenacity to make it as an action movie star. — Rebecca Souw.

By far the biggest breakout from the biggest TV show of the year, “Squid Game” star Jung began modeling way back in 2010. She strutted the runways of Seoul Fashion Week for two years before scoring runner-up position in Season 4 of Korea’s “Next Top Model.” She made an international debut in 2016 at the New York Fashion Week and became exclusive for Louis Vuitton. As a world-class model, Jung took up acting courses and landed her debut fiction role as the scratchy North Korean defector on Netflix’s “Squid Game.” Her success has had supernova qualities. She is seemingly on every billboard and magazine cover and has leapfrogged established stars to be the most followed Korean actor on Instagram. Jung says seems to thrive on keeping busy. Acting roles are piling up, but she tells the media that she worries when the workflow slows. — Rebecca Souw.

After debuting as the young Shah Rukh Khan in Karan Johar’s “My Name is Khan” (2010), Indian actor Gourav was noticed in Anurag Kashyap’s 2016 short “Clean Shaven,” and then in “Mom” and later in Deepa Mehta’s 2019 Netflix series “Leila.” But it was Ramin Bahrani’s adaptation of Booker-winning novel “The White Tiger” that was Gourav’s international breakout role. His central performance as a scheming, social-climbing driver earned him BAFTA, AACTA and Independent Film Awards nominations. Gourav is now on his way to both Bollywood and international fame, signing plum roles in Farhan and Zoya Akhtar’s “Ho Gaye Hum Kahan” and Scott Z. Burns’ anthology “Extrapolations.” — Naman Ramachandran.

Bangladeshi model and television actor Badhon broke through internationally this year with her first major role in a feature film, “Rehana Maryam Noor.” Formally trained in dental surgery, and a single mother who lives in Dhaka with her 10-year-old daughter, Badhon plays a single mother who teaches in a medical college, who speaks out against a sexual assault and, in doing so, challenges a wall of authority. The tough but rewarding “Rehana” was the first Bangladeshi film to be selected in the official competition at Cannes, and Badhon went on to win the best actress prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. She is now playing one of the leads in Netflix’s spy thriller “Khufiya,” by Indian auteur Vishal Bhardwaj. — Naman Ramachandran.

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
Genre: Fantasy, drama, war
Date watched: --
Director: Guillermo Del Toro
Production companies: Estudios Picasso, Tequila Gang, Esperanto Filmoj, Telecinco, Sententia Entertainment, Wild Bunch, CafeFX, OMM
Year of release: 2006
Age certificate: 15
Awards won: Academy Award for Best Production Design, Goya Award for Best New Actress, BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Academy Award for Best Cinematography, Goya Award for Best Cinematography, Goya Award for Best Original Screenplay, Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Goya Award for Best Special Effects, Ariel Award for Best Actress, Independent Spirit Award for Best Cinematography, BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design, Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, and more....
Favourite scene(s) and why: My favourite scene was the final scene where Vidal was met with the rebels, who were stood in unity against him. I loved this because it showed how isolated Vidal was, along with his fascist regime. It effectively conveyed how people were not willing to conform to someone as evil and cruel as him. The use of lighting in this scene is particularly effective because of the low-key, blue tinged light which envelopes Vidal. In contrast, there is a halo effect of yellow light above the rebels, which shows that they are a symbol of hope for many.
Another scene which stands out is the death of the doctor. It encapsulates the attitude that many socialists had towards the fascist rule during the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. The doctor disobeys what Vidal had asked him to do, showing his resilience and opposition to the strong extremist views that he was being commanded by.
Favourite character(s) and why: My favourite character is Mercedes because she represents the idea that women can escape the grasps of contemporary society. I think, through displaying her in the way that he did, Del Toro created a very intelligent and cunning woman who managed to go behind the backs of fascist leaders to stand up for what she believed in.
Overall thoughts on the film: I think, aesthetically, the film was amazing. I loved the way the makeup and costume was used to make everything come to life. I think the constant references to women and the element of power it carries with this is excellent. It has a way of proving that fascism never works, there is always room for error, and that eventually there will be failure.
This relates closely to the themes which are relevant to the plot and aesthetics of Pan’s Labyrinth. One of the themes I find to be the most significant is fascism, unsurprisingly. The strong and set beliefs which Vidal holds dear are represented not only through his actions, but through symbols like his uniform, and his affinity with shaving. Both of these suggest a very precise and controlled life, much like the structure of fascism. Things must always be in order, and Vidal must also be completely organised. Another theme which I think is important is the idea of fantasy vs reality. Throughout the film, we see clear distinctions between the fantasy realm, and the bleak-looking reality. The colour palettes are entirely contrasting. The fantasy realm is brimming with rich colours such as deep reds and golden tones. However, when Ofelia is back in her normal life, everything is shadowed and etched in sullen blue light. This reflects her views on her real life, and shows us how much she desires to escape from its pain and misery.
This film made me focus on the uprising against fascism, and made me think about ways to overcome or challenge an idea when faced with extremism. It really shows the negatives and poor execution of fascism itself.
Rating: 4/5 stars.

Pedro Almodóvar
Pedro Almodóvar Caballero (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈpeðɾo almoˈðoβaɾ kaβaˈʝeɾo]; born 25 September 1949) is a Spanish filmmaker, director, screenwriter, producer, and former actor.
He came to prominence as a director and screenwriter during La Movida Madrileña, a cultural renaissance that followed after the end of Francoist Spain. His first few films characterised the sense of sexual and political freedom of the period. In 1986, he established his own film production company, El Deseo, with his younger brother Agustín Almodóvar, responsible for producing all of his films since Law of Desire (1987).
Almodóvar achieved international recognition for his black comedy-drama film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown(1988), which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and went on to more success with the dark romantic comedy film Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990), the melodrama High Heels (1991) and the romantic drama thriller Live Flesh(1997).
His subsequent two films won an Academy Award each: All About My Mother (1999) received the award for Best Foreign Language Film while Talk to Her (2002) earned him the award for Best Original Screenplay. Almodóvar followed this with the drama Volver (2006), the romantic thriller Broken Embraces (2009), the psychological thriller The Skin I Live In (2011) and the dramas Julieta (2016) and Pain and Glory (2019), all of which were in competition for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
His films are marked by his employment of certain actors and creative personnel, complex narratives, melodrama, pop culture, popular songs, irreverent humour, strong colours, and glossy décor. Desire, passion, family, and identity are among Almodóvar's most prevalent themes.
Acclaimed as one of the most internationally successful Spanish filmmakers, Almodóvar and his films have gained worldwide interest and developed a cult following. He has won two Academy Awards, five British Academy Film Awards, six European Film Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, nine Goya Awards and four prizes at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1997, Almodóvar received the French Legion of Honour, followed by the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 1999.
He was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001 and received an honorary doctoral degree in 2009 from Harvard University in addition to an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Oxford in 2016 for his contribution to the arts. In 2013, he received an honorary European Film Academy Achievement in World Cinema Award. In January 2017 he was named as President of the Jury for the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. In 2019, he was awarded the Honorary Golden Lion at the 76th Venice International Film Festival.

Sentient Wins Remake Rights To Nicole Kidman Horror ‘The Others’ EXCLUSIVE: In a competitive situation, LA-based Sentient Entertainment has won the remake rights to Nicole Kidman horror movie hit The Others, which scared up north of $200M global when it was released in 2001. Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of Alejandro Amenabar’s timely self-isolation tale about a war widow who hides her children away in an isolated mansion due to a rare disease characterized by photosensitivity. The arrival of three mysterious servants unlocks the house’s terrifying secrets. Kidman was Golden Globe and BAFTA-nominated for her turn and writer-director Amenabar won Goyas for Best Director and Screenplay. Sentient struck the lucrative deal with FilmSharks subsidiary The Remake Company and Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo’s Video Mercury. Cerezo originally acquired the film rights when he purchased Sogecine, formerly owned by Canal Plus. The plan is to reinvent and modernize the story and we understand the project is already attracting significant interest from A-list talent and studio backers. The film will be produced by Sentient’s Renee Tab and Christopher Tuffin, as well as Aliwen Entertainment’s Lucas Akoskin. Veteran Spanish producer Cerezo (Lucky Star) will executive produce alongside FilmSharks’ Guido Rud and Miller Way’s Michael and Jeeny Miller. Manager and producer Tab, whose credits include David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars and Jennifer Garner action-thriller Peppermint, was recently Emmy-nominated for FX limited series Feud: Bette and Joan. Sentient’s current slate includes Sierra/eOne feature Losing Clementine, which has Jessica Chastain attached, action-thriller Alphas which is set to star Sam Worthington, and Taken director Pierre Morel’s untitled Netflix thriller. ▶▶Read full article here: https://deadline.com/2020/04/sentient-wins-remake-rights-to-nicole-kidman-horror-the-others-alejandro-amenabars-timely-self-isolation-chiller-which-made-200m-1202878443/◀◀ #TheOthers #remake https://www.instagram.com/p/B-u9ipRjckW/?igshid=121noft01c3ts
