Exploring the Natural Beauty of Greenville: GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail
Nestled in the heart of South Carolina's Upstate region lies a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike - the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail. Stretching 22 miles through the vibrant city of Greenville and its surrounding areas, this multi-use greenway offers a unique blend of urban convenience and natural splendor. In this article, we'll take you on a journey along the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail, exploring its rich history, scenic beauty, recreational opportunities, and the local culture that makes it a must-visit destination.
History and Origins
The GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail, often simply called the "Swamp Rabbit Trail," gets its intriguing name from the defunct Swamp Rabbit Railroad that once traversed this route. Established in the late 19th century, this railroad served as a vital transportation link between Greenville and the neighboring communities. However, as the railroad fell into disuse, it was transformed into the picturesque greenway we know today.
Scenic Beauty
One of the most alluring aspects of the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail is its diverse scenery. The trail meanders along the Reedy River, providing breathtaking views of lush forests, tranquil wetlands, and the glistening waters of Lake Conestee. The iconic Liberty Bridge, suspended above the Reedy River Falls, is a sight to behold and offers a perfect vantage point for capturing the beauty of the area.
Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the abundant birdwatching opportunities along the trail. Keep an eye out for herons, ducks, and even the occasional deer as you explore this natural oasis.
Recreational Activities
The GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail caters to a wide range of recreational activities. Whether you're an avid cyclist, a leisurely walker, or a dedicated runner, you'll find something to suit your interests. Many parts of the trail are paved, making it accessible for wheelchairs, strollers, and inline skaters. Additionally, the trail features numerous parks and rest areas, making it an ideal spot for a family outing or a romantic picnic.
Bike rentals are readily available in Greenville, allowing you to explore the trail at your own pace. Cyclists can pedal through scenic countryside, while thrill-seekers can tackle the more challenging off-road sections.
Local Flavor
One of the unique charms of the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail is its connection to the local culture. The trail passes through several charming small towns, including Travelers Rest and Marietta, where you can experience Southern hospitality at its finest. These towns offer a variety of dining options, boutiques, and craft breweries where you can savor delicious cuisine and local brews.
For a taste of Greenville's vibrant arts scene, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Swamp Rabbit Café and Grocery, which showcases local artisans, fresh produce, and a welcoming atmosphere.
The GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail is a testament to the power of community vision and conservation efforts. It seamlessly blends history, nature, and modern amenities, making it an attractive destination for both locals and tourists. Whether you're seeking an invigorating outdoor adventure or a leisurely stroll through pristine landscapes, this trail has something for everyone. So, lace up your hiking boots, grab your bike, or simply take a leisurely stroll, and embark on a journey to discover the natural beauty and culture of Greenville through the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail.

Greenville
April 23
About two hours away from Concord, in South Carolina is the city of Greenville and home of the Swamp Rabbit Trail- an old railroad which now entertains cyclists and walkers along its 22 mile route.
The city is walker friendly and has some great restaurants, cafes and small boutique shops along a Main Street.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the downtown area, there is lots to see and green spaces to enjoy, including the waterfalls and walking suspension bridge.
Tumblr media
We cycled the Swamp Rabbit trail and enjoyed the various sites along the way. We didn't get to enjoy any of the breweries which are located along the start of the trail as they were a bit busy and drinking at the start of a cycle ride is enough to kill me off. Our usual drink is coffee and that was available at the other end of the trail and was very much welcome.

As often is the case, after our cycle ride during the day, we enjoyed a meal at one of the Mediterranean restaurants on the Main Street. I loved Greenville and definitely recommend the Swamp Trail.

SWAMP RABBIT
WF UPDATE (10/17/23).
Over the past few days, we’ve been having a blast in the Travelers Rest/Greenville area. It’s a fun place to visit.
We’ve biked into Greenville twice. The round trip mileage is just under 20 miles.
The trail is very nice. It’s fully paved. It’s flat. Between Travelers Rest and Greenville there are places to stop, especially a fun cafe/market that’s right on the trail. We enjoy the rides.
When we got to Greenville on Sunday (the 15th), we were delighted to learn that the big annual festival was underway. We had a great afternoon at the fair. Good food and good music.
Today, on our second trip to Greenville, the crowds were gone and we were able to peacefully wander around town. At the west end, we stumbled into a very unique eating venue. They’ve placed about 15 large shipping containers in a circle. Every container has been converted into a take-out restaurant. The middle of the circle, a big area, is full of picnic tables. The eating area has a great sound system and they play good music. The place is called “The Gathering.” The food choices are very interesting and quite varied. The vibe is really cool. Make sure you visit The Gathering when you visit Greenville.
By the way, I’ve determined the source of the confusion regarding the length of the trail. As I’ve mentioned previously, I’ve seen articles that say it’s 19 miles, 23 miles, and 34 miles. I was bothered by the confusion.
Our rental house in Travelers Rest is near mile marker 24. From our bike rides, I knew that mile marker 34 was near Greenville, and that the trail ends slightly after Greenville. I decided to run north on the trail (away from Greenville) to look for the end of the trail. Could I run that far?
Happily, I survived the run. It wasn’t much of an ordeal. I learned that the trail starts about half a mile north of mile marker 22. It just comes to an end, in the woods, at a small sign that says: “End Of Trail. . .At Least For Now.” Who starts a trail at mile marker 21.5?
Here’s my theory. When they built the trail on the railway bed, they adopted the existing mile markers that were used by the old railroad. They started a bit south of Greenville and headed north. For logistical and/or financial reasons, they stopped at mile marker 21.5. Doesn’t that make sense?
So, the mile markers are confusing because they start at 21.5 and end (I think) at 37. Based upon the mileage markers, people say all sorts of stuff about the actual distance. I’ve concluded that the actual distance is approximately 16 miles. Either biking or running, I’ve covered 13 miles of the trail on this trip.
This isn’t a very long trail. It isn’t a very challenging trail. It is a very fun trail. I’m sure that we’ll visit the Swamp Rabbit Trail again. Maybe you’ll join us?
