Once You See the Truth About Cars, You Can’t Unsee It https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/15/opinion/car-ownership-inequality.html
By Andrew Ross and Julie Livingston
Mr. Ross and Ms. Livingston are professors at New York University, members of its Prison Education Program Research Lab and authors of the book “Cars and Jails: Freedom Dreams, Debt, and Carcerality.”
In American consumer lore, the automobile has always been a “freedom machine” and liberty lies on the open road. “Americans are a race of independent people” whose “ancestors came to this country for the sake of freedom and adventure,” the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce’s soon-to-be-president, Roy Chapin, declared in 1924. “The automobile satisfies these instincts.” During the Cold War, vehicles with baroque tail fins and oodles of surplus chrome rolled off the assembly line, with Native American names like Pontiac, Apache, Dakota, Cherokee, Thunderbird and Winnebago — the ultimate expressions of capitalist triumph and Manifest Destiny.
But for many low-income and minority Americans, automobiles have been turbo-boosted engines of inequality, immobilizing their owners with debt, increasing their exposure to hostile law enforcement, and in general accelerating the forces that drive apart haves and have-nots.
Though progressive in intent, the Biden administration’s signature legislative achievements on infrastructure and climate change will further entrench the nation’s staunch commitment to car production, ownership and use. The recent Inflation Reduction Act offers subsidies for many kinds of vehicles using alternative fuel, and should result in real reductions in emissions, but it includes essentially no direct incentives for public transit — by far the most effective means of decarbonizing transport. And without comprehensive policy efforts to eliminate discriminatory policing and predatory lending, merely shifting to electric from combustion will do nothing to reduce car owners’ ever-growing risk of falling into legal and financial jeopardy, especially those who are poor or Black.
By the 1940s, African American car owners had more reason than anyone to see their vehicles as freedom machines, as a means to escape, however temporarily, redlined urban ghettos in the North or segregated towns in the South. But their progress on roads outside of the metro core was regularly obstructed by the police, threatened by vigilante assaults, and stymied by owners of whites-only restaurants, lodgings and gas stations. Courts granted the police vast discretionary authority to stop and search for any one of hundreds of code violations — powers that they did not apply evenly. Today, officers make more than 50,000 traffic stops a day. Driving while Black has become a major route to incarceration — or much worse. When Daunte Wright was killed by a police officer in April 2021, he had been pulled over for an expired registration tag on his car’s license plate. He joined the long list of Black drivers whose violent and premature deaths at the hands of police were set in motion by a minor traffic infraction — Sandra Bland (failure to use a turn signal), Maurice Gordon (alleged speeding), Samuel DuBose (missing front license plate) and Philando Castile and Walter Scott (broken taillights) among them. Despite widespread criticism of the flimsy pretexts used to justify traffic stops, and the increasing availability of cellphone or police body cam videos, the most recent data shows that the number of deaths from police-driver interactions is almost as high as it has been over the past five years.
In the consumer arena, cars have become tightly sprung debt traps. The average monthly auto loan payment crossed $700 for the first time this year, which does not include insurance or maintenance costs. Subprime lending and longer loan terms of up to 84 months have resulted in a doubling of auto loan debt over the last decade and a notable surge in the number of drivers who are “upside down”— owing more money than their cars are worth. But, again, the pain is not evenly distributed. Auto financing companies often charge nonwhite consumers higher interest rates than white consumers, as do insurers.
Formerly incarcerated buyers whose credit scores are depressed from inactivity are especially red meat to dealers and predatory lenders. In our research, we spoke to many such buyers who found it easier, upon release from prison, to acquire expensive cars than to secure an affordable apartment. Some, like LeMarcus, a Black Brooklynite (whose name has been changed to protect his privacy under ethical research guidelines), discovered that loans were readily available for a luxury vehicle but not for the more practical car he wanted. Even with friends and family willing to help him with a down payment, after he spent roughly five years in prison, his credit score made it impossible to get a Honda or “a regular car.” Instead, relying on a friend to co-sign a loan, he was offered a high-interest loan on a pre-owned Mercedes E350. LeMarcus knew it was a bad deal, but the dealer told him the bank that would have financed a Honda “wanted a more solid foundation, good credit, income was showing more,” but that to finance the Mercedes, it “was actually willing to work with the people with lower credit and lower down payments.” We interviewed many other formerly incarcerated people who followed a similar path, only to see their cars repossessed.

LeMarcus was “car rich, cash poor,” a common and precarious condition that can have serious legal consequences for low-income drivers, as can something as simple as a speeding ticket. A $200 ticket is a meaningless deterrent to a hedge fund manager from Greenwich, Conn., who is pulled over on the way to the golf club, but it could be a devastating blow to those who mow the fairways at the same club. If they cannot pay promptly, they will face cascading penalties. If they cannot take a day off work to appear in court, they risk a bench warrant or loss of their license for debt delinquency. Judges in local courts routinely skirt the law of the land (in Supreme Court decisions like Bearden v. Georgia and Timbs v. Indiana) by disregarding the offender’s ability to pay traffic debt. At the request of collection agencies, they also issue arrest or contempt warrants for failure to appear in court on unpaid auto loan debts. With few other options to travel to work, millions of Americans make the choice to continue driving even without a license, which means their next traffic stop may land them in jail.
The pathway that leads from a simple traffic fine to financial insolvency or detention is increasingly crowded because of the spread of revenue policing intended to generate income from traffic tickets, court fees and asset forfeiture. Fiscally squeezed by austerity policies, officials extract the funds from those least able to pay. This is not only an awful way to fund governments; it is also a form of backdoor, regressive taxation that circumvents voters’ input.
Deadly traffic stops, racially biased predatory lending and revenue policing have all come under public scrutiny of late, but typically they are viewed as distinct realms of injustice, rather than as the interlocking systems that they are. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it: A traffic stop can result in fines or arrest; time behind bars can result in repossession or a low credit score; a low score results in more debt and less ability to pay fines, fees and surcharges. Championed as a kind of liberation, car ownership — all but mandatory in most parts of the country — has for many become a vehicle of capture and control.
Industry boosters promise us that technological advances like on-demand transport, self-driving electric vehicles and artificial intelligence-powered traffic cameras will smooth out the human errors that lead to discrimination, and that car-sharing will reduce the runaway costs of ownership. But no combination of apps and cloud-based solutions can ensure that the dealerships, local municipalities, courts and prison industries will be willing to give up the steady income they derive from shaking down motorists.
Aside from the profound need for accessible public transportation, what could help? Withdraw armed police officers from traffic duties, just as they have been from parking and tollbooth enforcement in many jurisdictions. Introduce income-graduated traffic fines. Regulate auto lending with strict interest caps and steep penalties for concealing fees and add-ons and for other well-known dealership scams. Crack down hard on the widespread use of revenue policing. And close the back door to debtors’ prisons by ending the use of arrest warrants in debt collection cases. Without determined public action along these lines, technological advances often end up reproducing deeply rooted prejudices. As Malcolm X wisely said, “Racism is like a Cadillac; they bring out a new model every year.”

Mixels 10 Years Tour
[Taken directly from "News" section of Mixels site]
(Also this isn't actually real)
Attention, Mixels fans. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the premiere of Mixels!!
To celebrate, the Mixels are gearing up for yet another musical trip on the road!
We'll be traveling all across, playing in as many countries as we can!
Best of all, we'll be starting a month early!
The tour begins Friday January 12th in Morrison, Colorado, and will remain in the US for about a month (see dates below). Specific venues have already been announced, the rest will be unveiled at a later date.
Here's how it'll work: each show will start with about 2-3 opening acts (the unofficial number is because one of those acts will sometimes be too busy to perform on some dates; the other openers will remain throughout the whole tour). While the opening acts will be the same people, the "headliner" as we'll name them will be sorta different for each show.
When we say "sorta different", we mean that there will be a pattern for what headliners will appear.
And now, without further ado, here is the planned tour route for America:
1/12: Red Rocks Amphitheater; Morrison, CO
1/13: Treasure Island Amphitheater; Red Wing, MN
1/16: Jay Pritzker Pavilion; Chicago, IL
1/17: Starlight Theatre; Kansas City, MO
1/18: Radio City Music Hall; NY
1/19: PNC Pavilion; Cincinnati, OH
1/20: Aretha Franklin Amphitheater; Detroit, MI
1/22: Craig Ranch Amphitheater; North Las Vegas, NV
1/23: Greek Theatre; Los Angeles, CA
1/25: Leader Bank Pavilion; Boston, MA
1/26: Maine Savings Amphitheater; Bangor, ME
1/28: American Family Insurance Amphitheater; Milwaukee, WI
1/29: Grossinger Motors Arena; Bloomington, IL
1/31: SumTur Amphitheater; Papillion, NE
Tour manager [Mr. Meanie] was asked about what his hopes were in regards to the tour. He said...
"My hopes are for the shows we play to give off a positive attitude, to show the magic of playing music, and to bring wonder and joy to the masses."
More locations and venues will be revealed later!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*grumbling*
'Positive attitude' my a**...
The gall of that stupid tour manager to make it seem like he has no flaws. You can't see it in his interview, but I sure can. I've seen it before...
I'm not even gonna show his real name, I'm replacing any mention of his name with stuff like "Mr. Meanie" because it describes him perfectly.
There is no way I'm letting that guy drag me across the world, just to strain my vocals for days on end, all while playing in frigid cold temperatures.
And there's no way in h**l that I'm performing at the show in Bloomington (hence why I've crossed it out)! I've heard too many bad stories from that place. What Davis is really trying to say is that he and his friends are excited to be one of the openers for the tour. As always, their band is sort of a tribute act to Oasis.
UPDATE: Every venue has been announced for each location on this list! See you this Friday!!

Guess who has two thumbs and got kicked out of her barn? 👍👍
So two weeks ago I ran into this woman at the barn as she was taking her horses out of the arena and I was taking one in to ride. I know her, her barn is right across from a) the barn with the horse I currently ride and b) the barn just next to it, where I worked for seven months. Seven. And I still occasionally work at the barn where I currently ride. Following me?
Well. She completely forgot who I was and that we had met quite a few times, actually, over the past two years. I said hello as I passed her and she gave me that very specific look middle-aged white women give you that’s somewhere between “are you a criminal” and “you don’t even go here”. She said “are you Lena? [daughter of the people whose horse I ride]” I said “uh, nope”, weirded out by the fact I’m so easily forgotten. She then says “we’ll, are you related to [this horse’s owners]?” I again said no, and “I just ride this guy.” Gave the horse a pat, tried to keep walking. At this point she went full school marm and said “are you on file with the stable committee office??” As in… have u signed all the hold harmless paperwork that everyone has to sign in order to do anything with horses at any barn anywhere. Again… I have worked and ridden at this damn barn for two years right across from this woman’s barn.
Tumblr media
So I said “yup, I’m on file, I’m totally legal! I’ve done all the paperwork”. She immediately changed tone and laughed and said “oh you know, I just have to check!” And I fake laughed and said “yep! Ok!” And told her to have a nice day. And it sat in my craw for days and I couldn’t shake the feeling she was going to contact the horse’s owner and “report me” or something.
Fast forward to yesterday morning. I get a text from the guy whose horse I ride and he says that this bitch (not how he referred to her, of course) has been made head of the stable committee. And she has decided that no one is allowed to ride a horse they don’t own, regardless of waiver status, unless the owner is present to supervise. in summary I, a non-wealthy young person, am not allowed to ride at the stables unless the horse’s owner agrees to come out and babysit me like I’m a child.
Tumblr media
Also, I am definitely not a worse rider than most of the horse owners at this place (not the ones I ride for) who know nothing about horses and never ride, (which is why they hire me and people like me to take care of their horses for them)! But that’s not the point, the point is this woman has cited “insurance liability” as the reason for banning non-owners from barn activity. She has taken over from the previous committee head, who is an actual lawyer, and decided that the paperwork the actual lawyer prepared isn’t good enough to ensure the barn’s interests are protected… even though it has been doing exactly that for at least five years without incident. This is the same woman who used barn funds to put up a slew of cross country jumps all over the bridle path even though there’s only one (!) other eventer in the entire stables, so no one uses them. It’s utter nonsense.
The worst part is that because I’m not an owner I’m not privy to the stable committee meetings, so I don’t actually know that this is a real new policy, or if she simply told this specific horse owner it was for his, and my, benefit. If my name was somehow brought up at this month’s meeting, my former “friend” who hates my guts now would absolutely have started throwing shade and making up crazy shit. By now most people at the barn know she’s crazy, but too few know me well enough to have a dispute. So I can’t even say for certain, because horse people Are Like That, that this is even a riel now and not just something they brought up for me specifically, without having a better reason to boot me out. Less drama this way, you see. Knowing this woman loves control (turning the entire bridle path into her own personal playground!), I’d like to believe it’s just a whole rule now, but I don’t know for certain.
Tumblr media
Anyway… as soon as I read that text message I was like *stares in Tired Horse Bitch*. I was lucky that these folks allowed me to ride their horse, and I had other people offer too, when the family I worked for retired their horses and I was out of options. And it chaps my entire ass that after all the work I’ve done and all the connections I’ve made, the owners didn’t even get the right to tell me when to stop. They can’t even make that decision now. And it has lit a fire under me to just stop lurking on horse boards and checking out boarding barns and commit to horse shopping, because I cannot deal with being beholden to the whims of random old crones any longer. I need a horse of my own that no one can tell me what to do with. Do I currently have the budget I was hoping I’d have? Nope. Am I going to start looking at horses anyway? Yep.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
#personal#it’s a great sport but it’s unfortunately filled with a lot of control freaks and fun-suckers#poor man who owns the horse was like when I go riding you can join next time? what a nice man. but idk if I will take him up on it#I’m so tired of feeling like I’m being watched all the time their anyway now it will be so much worse#horse girl#i don’t want to hang out someplace where I’m unwanted and after two years of Drama and More Drama I am ready to shell out however many#thousands of dlllars I have to to not have to deal with any of it anymore#what’s next on her agenda I wonder! Theo oblivion is no longer allowed to visit even though#their hoa funds are paying for the barn to exist?#will the lessees not be able to ride without supervision either? how do the other owners#who let their friends and family ride#feel about this? i may never know lol because I’m not going back there I don’t think#petty neurotic narcissists using ‘liability’ as a catch all for anything they don’t like in the horse world#has gotta stop. it’s too much effort to just exist in shared spaces IN MY OWN LANE#one time last year I rocked up to the barn and their was a riderless horse at the gate#he was fully tacked and freaked out and he had clearly dumped his rider some place#i pull my car in through the other gate and jog over to get him. he’s ln the other side#there are two women doing a lesson in the arena RIGHT NEXT TO HIM and they do nothing#I ask them for the code to the side gate there and they look at me like I’ve sprouted a second head#so I gesture at this riderless fucking horse and repeat my request for the code#as I punch it in another trainer drives up and says “oh good someone else noticed! and we lead the horse#back to his barn (I knew exactly whose horse it was) and in tack him and put him up#then we run off to saddle up and ride out and look for the owner#this committee bitch- the one who’s in charge now- was outside her barn gabbing with a friend#we rode by and said so and so’s horse came back without her we’re going to go find her#and she and her fiend just like. stared at us#we rode for like thirty minutes and didn’t find the rider#(she had fallen off closer to home and by that time had made it back to the barn#with no broken bones or anything) and when we were turning around the bitch and her friend came riding up finally#they had tacked up before us! they should’ve led the search!

Another aside on the subject of Covid and live music, which I nearly forgot to mention: Pete Townshend has apparently just gotten over a bout with it, and it got seven (!) of their touring crew and orchestra members. I thought, grimly: Really? Only seven? But they carried on with the tour, with Pete sitting out on vocal duties and (I assume) orchestra and crew replacements sitting in.
Which gives you a sense of the scale of the operation, putting on an arena tour for a legacy rock band. It's a much bigger and well-financed machine than that which powers the Afghan Whigs, just six or seven guys schlepping along interstates on a single tour bus, playing clubs and theaters that cap out at 1,000 occupants. As for The Who? They've probably got somebody on staff whose sole job is to coordinate rapid tests each morning for the whole 60-person rock 'n' roll circus (sorry, sorry, I couldn't resist). Somebody tests positive, that individual gets isolated, they call for backup, and the show goes on.
God only knows what the legal and insurance underwriting for that situation looks like. I'd love to read it. Plenty of waivers of liability, I'm sure. But it's possible that this is what the future looks like for that sector of live event production, for the big-name acts who are able to absorb and pass on the costs.
Meanwhile, my #forgottenninetiesbands have to cross their fingers and pray. They all expect to get sick; they're completely resigned to it. Attitudes range from vague apprehension to downright flippant. Mostly, everybody seemed happy and grateful to be back on the road. But it makes your head spin. Those are their options: tour and get sick, stay home and lose months of income. Because what meager safety net the industry had during 2020-2021 is now completely gone. I'm like, giving myself an anxiety attack typing this out.

For the second week in a row, I will be up in Portland for an event! This weekend, I will have a table at Maine Comic and Toy Con at the Cross Insurance Arena! This will be my first time tabling at this convention. I’ve heard nothing but positive things about its older sister convention, Bangor Toy and Comic Con, so I’m looking forward to this. For the past week, I’ve felt almost back to my normal self. I’m ready!

Uncharted Waters Made Familiar: A Guide to Navigating the Sea of International Shipping
The world beckons, your products poised to cross borders and captivate audiences far and wide. But the vast ocean of international shipping can seem daunting, fraught with hidden currents and unforeseen storms. Fear not, intrepid explorer! This guide equips you with the knowledge to chart your course with confidence, choosing the right shipping services and companies to ensure your precious cargo reaches its destination safe and sound.
First Mate Your Options:
Ocean Freight: The workhorse of global trade, container ships offer cost-effective solutions for large volumes, albeit with longer transit times. Consider reputable giants like Maersk and Cosco, or explore regional players for specific routes.
Air Freight: When speed is paramount, air freight becomes your trusty steed. Expect shorter transit times but at a higher cost. Companies like FedEx and DHL excel in this arena, but regional specialists might offer competitive rates.
Multimodal Transport: Combine the strengths of air, sea, and land for unique needs. This flexibility comes with increased complexity, so choose experienced providers like Kintetsu World Express or DSV Panalpina.
Choosing Your Captain:
Beyond the vessel, the human factor reigns supreme. Look for shipping companies with:
Global Network and Reach: Ensure seamless transit through established partnerships with ports, airlines, and land transport providers.
Industry Expertise: Choose a company with proven experience in handling your specific cargo type, be it electronics, perishables, or hazardous materials.
Technology and Transparency: Real-time tracking, online dashboards, and clear communication are essential for navigating unpredictable waters.
Cost-Effectiveness: Compare rates and negotiate for value without compromising on service or reliability. Remember, the cheapest option isn't always the smoothest voyage.
Beyond the Horizon:
Value-Added Services: Explore insurance, customs clearance assistance, and warehousing solutions for a comprehensive shipping package.
Sustainability: Choose a company committed to eco-friendly practices, minimizing carbon footprint and protecting the seas you traverse.
Bon Voyage!:
With careful planning, the right partner, and a sprinkle of nautical courage, you can conquer the waves of international shipping. Your meticulously selected Freight forwarding and companies become your compass and sails, guiding your products across borders and into the eager hands of waiting customers. So, raise the anchor, set your course, and embark on a voyage of global success!

How is the service provided by Nexa different from a normal Maruti Suzuki showroom?
When it comes to purchasing a Maruti Suzuki car, the experience you receive can vary significantly depending on where you choose to do business. Maruti Suzuki, a renowned name in the Indian automotive industry, offers two distinct types of showrooms: the traditional Maruti Suzuki Arena showrooms and the premium Nexa showrooms. In this article, we'll explore the differences between these two service points, shedding light on why you might choose a Nexa Service Center, like the esteemed Auric Motors, over a regular Maruti Suzuki showroom.
An Upscale Atmosphere: The Nexa Experience
The first noticeable difference when you step into a Nexa showroom is the ambiance. Nexa showrooms are designed to offer a premium and upscale experience. The interiors are modern, well-lit, and stylishly decorated, creating an environment that feels more akin to a luxury car dealership. Regular Maruti Suzuki car showrooms, while functional, may not offer the same level of sophistication.
Exclusive Models: Nexa's Unique Lineup
Nexa showrooms exclusively feature a distinct range of Maruti Suzuki models, including the Baleno, Ciaz, Ignis, S-Cross, and XL6. These models are known for their premium features, design, and performance. If you're looking for a car that stands out from the crowd, Nexa is the place to explore. In contrast, Maruti Suzuki Arena showrooms cater to a broader range of models, including the popular Alto, Swift, and Dzire.
Nexa Service Center: Superior Customer Support
When it comes to after-sales service and support, Nexa Service Centers have set a new standard. These service centers are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and are staffed by trained technicians who specialize in Nexa models. The focus is on providing personalized and attentive service. Whether it's routine maintenance, repairs, or Maruti Suzuki car insurance inquiries, Nexa Service Centers like Auric Motors prioritize your satisfaction and convenience.
Tumblr media
Maruti Suzuki Car Insurance: Simplified at Nexa
While both Nexa and regular Maruti Suzuki car insurance showrooms offer options, Nexa takes it a step further by ensuring a hassle-free insurance experience. They provide comprehensive insurance solutions tailored to your specific needs. The dedicated insurance advisors at Nexa are well-versed in the intricacies of insurance policies and can guide you through the process, making it a seamless part of your car-buying journey.
Locating the nearest Nexa showroom
Finding a Maruti Suzuki showroom is relatively easy, as they are widespread across India. However, locating the nearest Nexa showroom may require a bit more effort, as they are strategically positioned in urban and premium areas. The convenience of a regular Maruti Suzuki showroom near you might outweigh the exclusivity of Nexa for some customers, depending on their location and preferences.
In summary, the choice between a Nexa Service Center and a regular Maruti Suzuki showroom ultimately boils down to your preferences and expectations. If you desire a premium experience, exclusive models, superior customer support, and simplified insurance solutions, Nexa, with brands like Auric Motors, is the ideal choice. However, if you are looking for a more budget-friendly option or prefer a broader selection of models, a regular Maruti Suzuki Arena showroom might be your preference. Whichever you choose, Maruti Suzuki's commitment to quality and customer satisfaction remains unwavering, ensuring a positive car-buying and ownership experience.
