"The Mechanisms were Jonathan Sims college band" and "Jon is the secret real past of Jonny D'ville" are both great takes but I present "Jon's descend into an unwilling antichirst figure is The Mecs new album and Jonny plays him in the songs because they just have very similar voices for some reason."

While we’re talking about war crimes. With the massive caveat that I am not an expert on international law, I think that legally speaking, Tim blowing up the moon may not technically qualify as a war crime. Because most of the provisions about excessive destruction specify that you have to knowingly be causing excessive destruction, and I’m not sure whether it’s clear Tim meant to blow up the entire moon, or just the Kaiser’s palace. So if hypothetically speaking I were Tim’s lawyer (though I am still not an expert) I’d probably be arguing that the cannon setting off a chain reaction with the rest of the bombs on the moon was an unforeseeable side effect, and thus an accident, and that it does not legally qualify as a war crime.
That said, the rampage of Tim Goes Crazy is very clearly a war crime (or series of war crimes) based on the Geneva Convention’s provision that quarter must be given.

look im not saying that timbertie WERE lovers but i am saying that going on an absolute rampage and blowing up the moon because your best friend died is kind of an insane reaction if you ask me, in the circumstances

Propaganda below!
Gunpowder Tim
Stream Gunpowder Tim vs The Moon Kaiser (the story of how he blew up the moon)
he's immortal. he's gay. he's in a band. he's got eye motifs. he *blew up the moon*. he's british. he's from the future. everybody go listen to gpt vs the moon kaiser rn and you'll understand. ps it was soooo hard for me to pick a favorite image of him PLEASE look him up and look at him
Blowing up the moon not only, y'know, blew up the moon, but was a vital part of his story because he gained? Was given? Had forced upon him? immortality in response to his blowing up the moon (and also nearly himself). The moon is in fact very important to his story. Also, he blew up the moon because his best friend died in a war that took place there. Imagine someone blowing up a moon for you wouldn't that be so nice. I love Tim he's everything to me
HE BLEW UP THE MOON
Also he is so gender
He's incredibly gender and also a cool immortal space pirate
He blew up the moon!
There was a war between the Moon Kaiser and England because the Kaiser threatened to blow up London, and Tim and Bertie (his best friend) joined the army and were sent to the moon. After Bertie died, Tim went on a murderous rampage and killed a not-insignificant amount of the Kaiser's army, but was eventually captured. In the throne room where he was to be executed, he noticed two allies he had known from earlier in the war. Tim had them distract the Kaiser and his (the Kaiser's) soldiers while he pointed the cannon the Kaiser had threatened to blow up London with at the moon and lit the fuse. He got to an escape pod before it blew up, but didn't get the visor closed, and lost his eyes (and died) in the resulting explosion that blew up the moon.
Fandub Eggman
Destroyed a large part of the moon because he was mad at a hedgehog and also Obama I guess

Gunpowder Tim vs The Moon Kaiser is so good, and I needed to write something about it
There are many things that can be said about the setting, but for simplicity's sake, we'll leave it at a war story. And isn't that all that matters? Another war, just as meaningless as the rest. Another set of people, far too young for what they've been made to do, far too young to understand the propaganda they've been fed. So they enlist, not knowing any better. And now we have Tim, and he has Bertie, and they're just trying to survive. Death on all sides, masked by the suffocating darkness, the fear pressing in on every sense from every direction. But they can do this, because they have each other. Until they don't. Until Bertie dies. And Tim, poor, poor Tim, left with nothing but the smell of blood and the whine of alarms and the endless darkness, snaps. Of course he does. There wasn't anything else he could have done. But he will not go down alone. If he's going to lose Bertie to the war, and lose himself to that loss, then he will take everyone else down with him. He singlehandedly cuts down enough of the opposing army that their leader notices, but his massacre must end eventually, and he's captured. Brought in front of the leader of the opposing opposition, sentenced to execution, but he refuses to die here, he won't, he can't. He fights and he reaches a cannon and blows up every person in the war and burns his eyes out but the war is over. The war is over. The war is over and the story ends here.
But Tim's story doesn't. Tim is found, smiling through burned and blackened eyes, floating through the cosmos. Tim is pulled from the wreckage of the war, his eyes replaced with metal and machinery, and he can see again, and he can live again. But why does he get to live? Bertie is still gone. He's killed so many people. Bertie is still gone. He's ended the war. Bertie is still gone. He was saved because he damned so many others. And Bertie is still gone. Tim couldn't save him. Tim is alive, and Bertie is dead, and when sobs wrack his body, his mechanical eyes do not water. Though this Mechanism may grant him sight and grant him life, it will not grant him his grief. His body shakes, and liquid finally, finally spills onto his cheeks, but it is not tears. A thick, viscous fluid runs down his face, and as he tries to scrub away the horrid reminder of his situation, he feels the metal on his face. Around his eyes, a patchwork of skin and steel, shifting with the motion of gears grinding beneath his skin. A sense of revulsion floods him. He still lives, and yet so much of him is dead, lost with time and war and Bertie. The anguish rises and it is all Tim knows.

No no no cause I was listening to “Gunpowder Tim vs. The Moon Kaiser” again and I noticed something
When Jonny talks about Tim in the song, all times except for ONCE he only refers to him as “Tim”, not “Gunpowder Tim” (again, save for that one time—which I’m gonna get to). And since Tim’s the hero of this song, you’d expect a heroic ballad to have the title of the person mentioned more than just once, and it is ONCE.
Not even in the end when Tim blows up the moon does he call him his “title”, he only says it once—and it’s at the beginning of that solemn section after the verse where Tim loses it.
It goes from Tim going ballistic to Jonny introducing him as “Gunpowder Tim” for the first time, talking about all the violent and insane things he did
I can’t place exactly why this makes me feel things but it does?? Like—I fucking love Tim for so many reasons, but this is one of my favorite songs cause there’s just so much for me to think about in it, and that part STICKS with me fr—

Something Something About the Moon
Ok ok I posted it. If you want to read a short crossover ficlet that’s just Cecil Palmer and Gunpowder Tim ranting about this moon, find it on AO3, or under the cut!
Cecil Palmer did not often leave the station on his lunch breaks, but when he did, he always met an oddly dressed stranger at the Moonlite-All-Nite Diner. It was never the same stranger twice, just a never-ending sequence of unfamiliar people who without fail sat down at his table as he was eating his salad, and who without fail left shortly after, never to be seen in Night Vale again.
This particular stranger was a man with long brown hair, a distinctly—and oddly—British accent, and a pair of goggles hanging around his neck. Cecil could tell he was from out of town, and wondered how he got there.
"Wretched thing!" the man, who had introduced himself as Tim, was saying, stabbing into a slice of invisible pie so hard his fork clanged against the plate. "I ought to just blast it out of the sky!"
"Wouldn't that be nice," Cecil agreed. "It is an eyesore." He had never met this man, and could not have said why he was talking to him.
"But noooo," he continued, waving his fork furiously in the air. "No Tim, they say, you can't blow up the moon, those people want it there!" He gave an indignant huff to show his displeasure.
"I don't want it there," Cecil said. "I’d like to throw something at it. Wipe that smug grin off its rocky face." He narrowed his eyes towards the window as he spoke, as though his lunar enemy could ever possibly see his expression.
“Like a bomb,” Tim agreed cheerily. “A big bomb that would blow it right into a million tiny smithereens.”
Cecil nodded thoughtfully. “If only we could.”
"Well then," said Tim. "That's permission enough. Clearly the residents of this planet don't want it." With that, he stood up and walked out of the restaurant.
Cecil finished his lunch in silence, wondering why this happened every time he went to the diner. Then he got up, paid the bill, and left to finish his show.
He didn't think again about the moon, or the man, or the conversation that they’d had, until three days later, when he was sitting outside with Carlos, gazing at the vast and incomprehensible sky with the usual horrified wonder.
"Cecil sweetie," Carlos said, gesturing at the blank expanse of night, "wasn't tonight supposed to be a full moon?"

Gunpowder Tim (The Mechanisms)
He used to be a normal human guy until he joined the war against the Moon Kaiser, blew up the moon (probably by accident), and got his eyes burned out of his head. Then a group of immortal space pirates found him and he ended up with mechanical eyes that keep him immortal (probably aided by the vampire mad scientist who has an on-again-off-again motherly relationship with said immortal space pirates).
Short version: Tim loses his "best friend" Bertie, goes insane, blows up the moon resulting in his eyes getting burned out in the blast, and gets Mechanized eyes (as told in Gunpowder Tim vs The Moon Kaiser, Tim's origin song).
Long version: The war against the Moon Kaiser find Tim and his "best friend" Bertie alongside Jonny d'Ville and the Toy Soldier fighting in the moon war. Bertie eventually gets himself killed in battle and Tim goes insane because of this and becomes a threat to the Moon Kaiser's men. It isn't long before Tim is captured and brought to the Moon Kaiser directly, but he managed to blow things up using the lunar cannon. Tim attempts to escape in the Kaiser's lifepod in time, but he didn't get the visor closed in time, resulting in his eyes being burned out. No one knows for sure who Mechanized Tim, as its thought that his story takes place after Dr. Carmilla leaves, but no one would put it past her on coming back one more time

Gunpowder Tim propaganda: conscripted into the Lunar War (which included delights such as microwave cannons and gas attacks), lost his best friend, and proceeded to go an epic rampage through the Kaiser’s forces, then used the Kaiser’s cannon to blow up the entire moon (including his own side's soldiers). He's the Master of Arms literally named GUNPOWDER. Relevant lyrics of “Tim Goes Crazy”: “We'll murder all the lunar men with fury heaven-sent / And we'll carpet Lenny's tunnels with the rounds that we have spent”; “Take no prisoners, give no quarter / Show them all the colour of their entrails on the floor / The Kaiser's men are cattle to the slaughter / And their blood will run like wine!”; “We'll suck the ragged eyeballs from the sockets of their skulls / Their existence is a mad disease, there needs to be a cull / Upon their rancid soldier-flesh our bayonets will dull / And their blood will run like wine!” Relevant lyrics from “Teatime with the Kaiser”: “So Gunpowder Tim cut a bloody red path / Through cannon and through infantry, dealing his wrath / Battalions were gathered, and charged with his destruction / But all of them fell to his maddened corruption”. Newspaper from the background of the Ulysses Dies at Dawn playlist reads “Forty Dead in Sub-Level 54D Explosions: Who is ‘Gunpowder Tim?’” and the album liner shows a dog tag listing him as being in the City’s army with the rank Enomotarch. And he's in a band (so there's the music) who often play war songs and generally take pleasure in wanton, senseless carnage: "Having fun, violence, adventure, violence, violence."

Gunpowder Tim is such a funny character. Went to war with his best friend slash lover and was chill until his best friend slash lover died (apparently in a funny way) and he went utterly insane and killed hundreds if not thousands before blowing the moon up.

During the war, Bertie died, and Tim flew into a beserk rage, tearing through the Kaiser's forces. Rating the songs from Gunpowder Tim vs. The Moon Kaiser because I feel like it.
The Recruiter’s Song
4/10. Not my favorite but it does have a nice beat to it. If I was asked to join the military force and this song was the strategy recruitment, I wouldn’t say no.
Gassed Last Night
6/10. For Tim and Tim only. I’m glad he’s having fun :)
The Toy Soldier’s Song
11/10. TS doesn’t care who you are, give it an order and it’ll go feral. Good for it. It deserves to go feral.
Tim Goes Crazy
10/10. Just like TS, Tim deserves to go feral. But more violent and with a lot more blood
Teatime with the Kaiser
9/10. Does the Kaiser wear sandals? Does he have no shoes? I personally like the No Shoes Kaiser a little more because what did he do to earn shoes? Nothing. Also, go Tim—blow up that moon like the crazy bad bitch you are. Also also, “I think that’s going to have an effect on the tides or something.” (7:58-8:02)
