mediums, gn! reader.. mutual pining.. confessions. genre, fluff. setting, non-apocalyptic. 

gyeongsu takes a seat next to you and pulls your notebook out of your grasp. before you can complain, he places a mini bouquet of fennel flowers on your palm. you fiddle with the gift, quietly observing it until you notice the rolled piece of paper.

carefully removing it from the stem, you give gyeongsu an inquisitive look. “what's this?”

“a piece of paper.” he laughs at the small shove you give his shoulder.

when you unravel the paper, you take your time to read the message messily scribbled on the surface. give a couple tilts of the head—maybe an extra squint since you don't have a microscope—you finally understand what gyeongsu is trying to tell you. or, rather, what he's trying to ask you.

on a scale of bare-su to ten, how free are you after school?

you look at gyeongsu with a small smile and answer, “if you're asking me out, i'd say bare-su.”

“great, it's a date!” he kisses your cheek and puts down your notebook. after he says he’ll pick you up at six, he swiftly runs off to tell cheongsan and suhyeok the good news. (maybe even ask the former for a discount at his family's restaurant.) 

only when he’s gone does the realization hit hard: you have a date with gyeongsu, your crush since middle school.

oh my.

you walk with your friends through the school, blissfully ignorant about their gossip session. all they ever talk about are baseless rumors, so why would you waste your time by listening? from your experience, it's best to just keep quiet so they don't recall your presence.

just as the three of you are about to cross the skybridge, a small shove against jiyeon's shoulder throws the conversation off. with a huff, she dusts off her uniform and looks at the offender. your eyes widen by a margin once you also realize who it is that had performed such a crime.

gyeongsu bows and tells the female, “i'm sorry, i didn't look at where i was going.”

it's just an accident, and his apology is enough to remedy it. but lee jiyeon is not the type of person to let go so easily. no, she likes to swirl up the storm.

“you better be grateful that this sweater doesn't cost much.” she scoffs and holds her head up. “if it did, you'd be crawling around for years, looking for the money to pay for the damage.”

haejin, your other companion, laughs at what she says and strides into the scene with his hands tucked in his pants pockets. “come on jiyeon, don't waste your precious time on dirty little welfies like him.”

you can see gyeongsu's fists sitting by his sides. if it wasn't for cheongsan physically restraining him, he may have already been sent to the principal's office for fighting another student. or maybe two, depends on when a teacher will arrive to break the fight up.

this is absurd, he can't let himself be treated like this. he knows he's not one of the most gifted students in the school, nor does he come from a wealthy lineage, but that doesn't excuse their behavior towards him. he has to step up, he has to do something—

“that's enough.” 

the stern tone of your voice calls everyone to pay attention to you. a good thing, because you've had enough of playing the sideline character. 

“it's funny, you know. watching you two try to tear gyeongsu down by using his social standing against him. well, guess what?”

“what?” jiyeon and haejin reply, both of them clueless as to why you were intent on defending someone you barely knew. in the past, you've stopped them from picking on others, but this is different.

“you can go ahead and burn through all that money your parents have. but you'll never be able to buy one of the most precious things in the world, a personality.”

their jaws drop.

satisfaction paints your smile as you walk past them to stand with gyeongsu, your arm linked with his. though it appears to be impossible, their jaws fall a little bit farther. seeing no reason to linger there any longer, the two of you and cheongsan decide to head to the cafeteria to see what's for lunch.

“come on lovebirds, you're moving so slowly.” cheongsan complains before narrowly dodging your kick. he decides to run ahead, in case your leg get a bit twitchy again.

without his best friend near to tease the two of you, gyeongsu finally decides to ask, “why'd you risk your friendships to defend me?”

“first of all, they were never my friends.” you pull him to the side so other students can easily pass by. with your free hand, you cup his cheek and kiss his forehead.

“secondly, i'm tired of hiding us away. from now on, i'll always run to you.”
